Services Institute of Medical Sciences (Urdu:سروسز انسٹیٹوٹ آف میڈیکل سائنسز), established in 2003, is a public school of medicine located in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan.

Services Hospital is attached to the college as a teaching hospital. The official short name for this college is SIMS.

History

Professor Dr Faisal Masud is the founder of the SIMS. It was located in a portion of small building of the College of Community Medicine at 6-Birdwood Road, Lahore. This college is now housed in its new campus adjacent to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology. The first and present principal of this college as of 2012 is Prof Dr Faisal Masud.

Campus

It has centrally AC building. It has five lecture theaters in addition to the demonstration rooms. Its library has more than 8000 books and subscribes to 78 National and International Journals available as paperbacks. In addition, it gives access to HEC funded access to thousands of scientific books and journals as e-access. It has Audio-Visual library as well.[citation needed]

Auditorium and Sports Complex

A purpose built, centrally air conditioned auditorium viz. Crash Hall with seating capacity of more than 400 was built in 2009. It has a Sports Complex for the Annual Sports Month Celebrations.

Student house

The construction of the college’s own student houses are yet under construction. However, the SIMS has managed temporary hostels for outsiders.

Departments

Its basic departments are equipped with latest computer aided laboratories, Carl-Zeiss microscopes for the students and penta-head and deca-head microscopes for demonstration and research. Its Pathology department is ISO 9002 and ISO 15142 certified.[citation needed]


Teaching Hospital

Services Hospital is the 1196 bedded teaching hospital attached to the SIMS.[citation needed]

Admission Policy

The College admits 190 students on open merit. Admission is gender neutral and need blind and is granted through a centralized Medical College Admission Test conducted by the University of Health Sciences Lahore annually. The Foreign students can also apply for admission through the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.[1]

The SIMS Journal The Esculapio is one of a kind in the quality of medical research it boasts of and has received great international acclaim.[2]

Research

The SIMS is the first undergraduate medical college where a research project is compulsory for every student during his 4th year of education. The faculty believes that being inquisitive and open minded to create new knowledge is as important as learning skills. An endowment fund has been created to fund research projects of the faculty and the students. It is looked after by the Research Grant Committee.
