Terms of use

The Instagram#Users section currently contains a rather lengthy paragraph on the subject of Instagram's Terms of Service. It is very important for the TOS information to be conveyed in this article; however the current text seems to be copied verbatim from Instagram's website. What do others think about rephrasing this text to paraphras tos View Private Instagram Profile (essentially, going for brevity without sacrificing accuracy)? Also, could there be a look up as to pornography/indecent photos within the terms of use? IbinjaminSpirit (talk) 17:50, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

I noticed that this page for Instagram has no mention of the trends that have sprouted and become popular through Instagram, like the weekend hashtag challenge, "throw back thursdays", and "the rich kids of instagram". I thought that it would be interesting to include and comment on these trends to provide a better idea of what really goes on within the Instagram community. LeSeine (talk) 22:11, 16 August 2012 (UTC)leSeine

If you can find a reliable source detailing these trends, then be bold and add the info! David1217 What I've done 21:25, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
No, that's not enough. Just because someone is using Instagram, and starting a trend, and that trend gets some "human interest" article, does not mean it belongs in this article. WP:DUE applies here. We would need to show that any given trend is of significant importance to the bigger history of Instagram, not just that it happened to spike enough to reach mainstream media one day. Qwyrxian (talk) 03:00, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
Though you can argue that any given trend may not be of any significant importance to the overall history of Instagram, I do believe that they do show and say a great deal about the Instagram community - perhaps, even Instagram culture. I thought that providing some insight into the kinds of trends that form within that community would be an interesting category to add to the article to provide a greater understanding of how Instagram works and how participants are connected with one another. For example, I think that the Weekend Hashtag Project is a project that truly encompasses so much of what Instagram is about. LeSeine (talk) 23:25, 19 August 2012 (UTC)leSeine
Also, it is under the 'Popularity' section of the article, so I thought listing trends would be appropriate. I thought that the 'Musicians' subsection also displayed somewhat of a trend that is very similar to the way the Weekend Hashtag Project works. LeSeine (talk) 23:31, 19 August 2012 (UTC)leSeine

Confused

"Following the revert changes to previously available terms and conditions, under the San Diego-based law, the company itself fill the class action lawsuit against the changes of the terms and conditions which had made last week that has breached the privacy of the user’s photo" asdfsdf Could this sentence be any more confusing?— Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.72.157.115 (talkcontribs)

It makes absolutely no sense, nor does the other lawsuit info added. I don't have time to summarize it right now, and I'm not even certain it's important enough to go in at all; we don't report on every single lawsuit that a company faces, especially not right after the suit is filed. At a minimum the sections need to be rephrased, but, more likely, we should just leave the info out for now until we know that this will be a longterm, important part of Instagram history. I'm moving all of the info and refs here in case anyone wants to work on it. Qwyrxian (talk) 11:07, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Android controversy?

Should there be a section on the criticism Instagram got when they released a version of it on Android back in April 2012? I think it would show an interesting relationship between iPhone and Android users, and the overall class warfare prevalent in the US. If you didn't know, when it was released on Android, many iPhone fans complained that "we would see poor people food" in their social network. It illustrates the current class issues modern America still deals with. Charles, no (at least not directly -- there obviously third party solutions that add more sharing options, but these are not in the standard application). Changing lede to say it's for mobile devices, i.e., not computers

I find it kind of funny that Instagram does not have an application for computers. I'm thinking of changing the lede sentence as follows (see italics):

Instagram is an online photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service for mobile devices that enables its users to take pictures and videos, apply digital filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr.

However, I suppose anyone can sign up online with a computer so they can comment on and follow users? Raquel Baranow (talk) 19:23, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

Nope, can't log in (sign up) without downloading a mobile application. **Confused** Raquel Baranow (talk) 19:53, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
You can download to your computer a program such as BlueStacks, which allows you to follow users and comment on their photos. Also note, the lede was changed. Raquel Baranow (talk) 18:58, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

Merger proposal

I propose that Instagram Shop be merged with Instagram. The content in the Instagram Shop article could easily be condensed to a small section in the Instagram article commenting on the phenomenon of people selling goods using Instagram. Jc86035 (talkcontributions) Use {{ping|Jc86035}} to reply to me 10:44, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

@Jc86035: I do not think that Instagram Shop should be merged with Instagram. First, Instagram Shop actually is a phenomenon or commercial activity among Instagram users, but not an function provided by Instagram officially. Second, the information in Instagram should mainly focus on the official function and the major feature of Instagram itself. It will be better to creat a link of Instagram Shop in the "See also" part of Instagram, so that people can link to Instagram Shop to have more knowledge. I disagree. I think Instagram Shop doesn't meet notability guidelines and the article itself is of very low quality. The fact that some people use Instagram as a shopfront could be stated as a single sentence and if any link were needed, it would be to the article that talks about using social media as a marketing and store-front tool as a general concept and not specific to Instagram. Orayzio (talk) 18:39, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

A free software is not just available to download free of charge. I don't think Instagram is a free software so I removed the category. --Quest for Truth (talk) 09:33, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

And I restored it. There is no other reasonable definition of "free software" other thsn "free of charge". BMK (talk) 09:37, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
"Freeware" is the term for a software which is "free of charge", and should not be confused with "free software". The word "free" in "free software" refers to "freedom", as in "freedom of speech". Users are allowed to freely modify and distribute the modified version of a free software. The developer of Instagram does not give their users such freedom, so Instagram should not be called a free software. --Quest for Truth (talk) 10:07, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
Yes, Category:Free mobile software is a subcat of Category:Free software which defines itself as "a category of articles relating to software that meets The Free Software Definition". --McGeddon (talk) 10:15, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi! Instagram just came out with a new account switch feature.

Here's what I wrote:

On the morning of February 9th, 2016, Instagram announced a new feature—account switching. The new feature allows users to switch between multiple without having to log out. It was first introduced in November of 2015 but didn’t stay for long. The new addition was only available to a select few of lucky users and is slowly being available to all users. Previously, users would have to log out of one account and log back into another account to access the secondary account but with this new feature, users can stay logged in and simply switch back and forth between their accounts.

Users can access this feature by going to Settings on their profile. At the very bottom of the page, there is an option that says “Add Account”. Users enter their details and have access to their other accounts. Accounts can be switches by tapping on the username at the top. A total of 5 accounts can be added through this feature.

Although there is a large amount of excitement from users, some people are worried about the encouragement of false self-image. With multiple accounts that can be so easily switched between, many fear that young users may only present a false “carefully edited, jealousy-inducing persona” to the public through one account while sharing ‘not-as-glamorous’ photos with just a few close friends. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jinahlina (talkcontribs) 07:09, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

Does anyone know if there are any released for this site other than starting at the most recent, viewing a bunch of textless dateless thumbnails (which only show number of likes/comments if you hover over) and scrolling down constantly to a 'load more' button?

Like for example a dated list, options from viewing from oldest to newest, the ability to view the text descriptions (or at least a portion of them, if they exist) in a big coalesced list?

I know text descrips and posting dates are available when clicking on the image but this doesn't help you locate them if you don't know where to look.

Even just knowing the dates of images without having to click on them would be nice. If I'm looking for "I remember they said this before August 10" it's like going in blind if you don't know where that image date begins. 184.145.18.50 (talk) 21:30, 13 February 2016 (UTC)

Branding on Instagram

Branding on Instagram is an action of creating identity of a company in terms of their products and services, and other emotional and non tangible consumer concerns via Instagram application.[1] It is also considered as creating a relationship, companies’ image and dialogue with community via Instagram.

For companies, Instagram can be used as a tool to connect and communicate with customers and potential customers. The company can present a more personal picture of their brand, and by doing so the company conveys a more honest picture of itself. Methods

There are a number of methods a company can interact with their customer to reach new customers and maintain the relation with the already existing ones.

Creating a corporate account and manage content by publish pictures. Customers voluntarily follow the official account and engage in the company’s activities. The idea of the pictures lies on on-the-go or behind the scenes communication with the followers.[2] By uploading pictures or videos in Instagram companies can do free marketing of their brands and products. Since users were willing to follow a certain brand, which match their tastes, efficiency of the communication and creating a bond with a customer on Instagram is high, giving a good opportunity for conversion marketing.[3] Results of a study suggest that companies should create and share entertaining rather than useful content because the users participate in Instagram primarily for hedonic reasons. Furthermore, it points out that attracting followers is determined by the level of activeness of the company on Social Network Service over time.[4]

Encouraging users to publish pictures of their brand and identify the picture with proper hashtag[5] - Analysis of the biggest user’s participatory hash-tagging, which was the Weekend Hashtag Project (#WHP) resulted in suggested practices, which could drive the engagement of the followers. It included encouragement users to apply them to their previous experience, leave users some freedom in terms of interpretation and representation of the hashtag in their own way and provide users with appropriate feedback, which make them feel involved in the user community.[6] According to a study, hedonic motivation is the most important driver of consumers’ intention to continue using social network service. Therefore companies should take into account that the interaction should create pleasure and enjoyment. A study shows that articles with visual information of eWOM has significantly higher ratings than the articles only with verbal information. These results prove that there is a greater influence of images than text in terms of eWOM[7].

Launching advertisement. They were introduced in the United States on November 1st, later on September 8th, 2015 ads became available in more than 30 countries. It includes sponsored posts but also 30-second video ads and the use of landscape dimension. Before, only 15-second video ads in square shape were allowed. The change lets the companies easily transfer their television commercials into Instagram ads. What distinguishes an ad on Instagram from other photos or videos is the “sponsored” mark. Instagram also introduced a new buying option called “Marquee” for these companies, who want to reach a large number of users very quickly. This option is useful for movie releases or big product launches. To increase conversion, Instagram also introduced a call-to-action button, which is only available for advertisement posts. This move was to benefit of Instagram’s investors, unfortunately some users complain about the number of ads and get annoyed[8]. Everyone can create their own advertisement on Instagram, it’s possible for example with programs as advertisement creator, Power Editor and API advertisement.

Celebrity endorsement. Brands reward impactful users, who have a large number of followers to promote their products and influence consumer buying behavior. A number of criticisms arose around this practice because the customers can’t see who is behind a piece of content. The Federal Trade Commission guidelines don’t cover the product placement but the endorsement, difference between which can be difficult to define sometimes[9]. There has been number of charges lied on companies, which deceived customers with paid advertising on Instagram[10].

Application for individual users, who get compensated for publishing pictures via a smartphone application. Users may get a commission when people shop using your link or based on the profile characteristics the brands invite the users to programs[11]. There are numerous affiliate marketing networks for promotion, like ShareASale, Ebates or Stylinity.

Users engagement Instagram shows on average a higher interaction rate than other social media networks, which means that users are more active on Instagram than on other platforms[12]. This in turn increases the possibility for successful marketing on Instagram in comparison to other social media platforms . Moreover, the GlobalWebIndex released an analysis of Instagram users that describes Instagram as attractive for advertisers because of its young and relatively affluent user base[13]. Furthermore, advertisement on Instagram can be also connected with Facebook, since Facebook bought Instagram in 2012, which enables synergy effects by placing advertisement on both platforms. Therefore, Facebook itself offers business costumers guidance on how to turn advertisement on Instagram[14]. US companies used Instagram for marketing purposes very early. At least since 2015 we can find a high growing number of European companies in several countries using Instagram as well. 33 % of the 500 global companies with the highest turnout used Instagram in 2015 for advertisement (company-to-consumer marketing) and branding[15].

Users purchase intensions A study shows that there are number of factors correlated with the purchase intentions of a customer on Instagram. A recreational message have a negative influence on users purchase intentions because the message might seem so interesting to the customers that they ignored the product itself. However, involvement in recreational messages have a positive impact on the purchase intention. Commercial advertisements and aspirational group activity on Instagram, i.e. certain celebrity’s post or recommendation of a product had a positive effect on purchase intention and users were willing to buy a product. The last factor that had a positive influence on customers’ purchase intentions was the ease of use the application itself. Nevertheless, utilitarian message, influence of direct reference groups and involvement in utilitarian messages didn’t have a notable effect on customers intensions to buy a product. To drive more conversion of their activities, companies may encourage more involvement in recreational messages by posting messages, which may appeal to the target group. As the study reveals, companies that don’t own Instagram accounts may launch commercial advertisement, which also has a positive influence on the purchase intension. Instagram is a low-cost and effective channel to communicate with its followers as followers are already interested in the brand itself. Regular and frequent updates on the brand and it’s products increase a brand awareness and purchase intentions[16].

Future features At the moment there is no special user-option for companies to create a business profile with imprint. Instagram is lately working on business profiles and will introduce it after a testing phase. On these business profiles users will have the option to contact the company by mail or private message inside the application, access to maps and directions and facilitate categorization of the business type. Moreover, the company had confirmed that business accounts will have a possibility of tracking posts results and buy ads directly from the mobile device[17]. Another thing that is important for business users, and had been recently changed, is new explore feature, which sorting the content by trending hashtags and location. The company informs that soon the most popular pictures, with most likes are highlighted on the beginning. This means that users not necessarily will see newest posts, but most likely - posts of most popular users, that had specific hashtag or was made in searched location in order to show a trend created by collective group of people capture the world in the real time through their phones[18].

Not done: Your piece seems to be very promotional towards companies advertising on Instagram. Here on Wikipedia, we try and provide facts in a neutral manner but your post is very speculative (especially about the future). Keep in mind that you should avoid original research at all times. You may rewrite your piece so that it is shorter, more concise and sourced entirely. 'Future features' should be removed from your request. I'm declining this for the moment; your edit request sounds to be advertising for Instagram and even providing guidance to companies on what the best way to advertise on Instagram is - this is not what Wikipedia is for. st170etalk 16:38, 28 June 2016 (UTC)

Criticism section?

No criticism section? A lot of people seem to have realised that Instagram effects are derivative and tacky by now. 31.53.189.225 (talk) 02:32, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

As a general rule, {[WP:NPOV]] recommends against criticism sections. However, if there has been legitimate criticism published in reliable sources (i.e., not forums, not blogs), then we can consider inclusion somewhere in the article. Qwyrxian (talk) 02:54, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

I totally agree with you, Qwyrxian. I don't think it is relevant to have a Criticism section without citing a reliable source. Also, even if this section is included, I believe it has to be in the most neutral point of view possible. Cheers, Zalunardo8 (talk) 13:40, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

Instagram Info

The information describing the Instagram platform and how it is used is very good. The history section was interesting and contained information that was new to me. I also liked how there was a description of majority of the filters Instagram features. However, I think there could have been a description explaining how you are able to edit your own photographs by adjusting the lighting, brightness, and contrast to add on to the filters. The "Trends" are also vague and out of date. There are more popular hashtags and trends being used than the ones presented. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 8.41.197.222 (talk) 17:43, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

More Detail/Missing Information about Instagram Stories

Hello,

I am currently doing an exercise in class right now based on critiquing Wikipedia pages. When looking at the "Instagram Stories" section, I noticed that there is not much information on what 'stories' are. A more descriptive explanation of what 'Instagram Stories' are might help people understand what is interesting and special about using this feature on Instagram. It might help to add/explain pictures as an example of what it looks like when posting a story to your Instagram page. As well, a bit more information instructing how to use Instagram 'stories' may be beneficial to people who are not very technology savvy.

Negative effects of Instagram on self-esteem

Although the Instagram application has many positive attributes, such as enabling users to create a wall to portray their life through pictures and videos, it can also have a negative impact on certain users. Due to the fact that social media plays a prominent role in today’s society nation wide, one could assume that the younger audience, whom are the targets for these media corporations, are using the Instagram application on a daily basis. As early studies show, adolescents are easily influenced by the media industry, however, with its influences not always being positive. Since these social media applications are becoming more and more popular, it is important to study the effects they may have on the individuals using them because some research suggests that using social media regularly is correlated to a lower perception of oneself. Though the Instagram application allows users to express themselves to their followers through photos and videos, the constant exposure to photo-shopped pictures of popular Instagram accounts, creates a sense of envy and a reduced sense of life satisfaction within certain individuals using the app. With the ability to access these accounts at the touch of a button, users are constantly comparing themselves to others, whether it be their appearance, lifestyle or clothing which could result in the detriment of one’s self-esteem. Unlike other social media applications, such as Facebook, Instagram allows you to follow celebrity accounts, without them following you back. Considering that for most celebrities, posting an Instagram picture benefits them financially, many of them are posting daily, thus constantly bombarding the average user with reminders of their adventurous lives in different countries every week, and their ‘flawless’ appearance from their photo-shoots. Members of society, and more particularly those that frequent social media tend to follow two patterns of comparison, either downward or upward comparisons. Downward consists of comparing oneself to social groups who they believe are beneath them, in order to feel a sense of satisfaction. However, the majority of individuals make use of upward comparison, meaning comparing oneself to those who you view as superior or above you. Either or, both forms of comparisons can have a negative effect on the user’s self-report and self-worth. In today’s society, your popularity on social media becomes a competition within individuals and groups. People focus on the amount of followers they have and the amount of likes they get to define their worth. Some even go to the extreme of buying their followers to seem more popular and delete photos if they do not reach the amount of likes they were expecting or desire. People believe that in order to get the sufficient amount of likes on their picture or video, they must alter the original photo by adding one of the twenty-four filters and using the editing tools. The overuse of the filters proves that an excessive amount of individuals do not feel comfortable posting a photo of themselves in their natural state, and feel like the edited picture will get them more likes and comments. In 2014, a campaign to raise money for breast cancer, called “No Makeup nomination” required women to post a “selfie” (portrait of oneself) with, obviously enough, no makeup. This trend lasted approximately two weeks, which millions of girls worldwide participated in. This social fad confirms that the majority of women will only post a natural photo of themselves without makeup whenever they feel like they will not be judged, for it is a societal trend. Although females seem to be more effected by the negative impacts of Instagram, males do also face some form of pressure to look like the Instagram models that have corrupted the application, whom have created an unrealistic image of what a healthy body should look like. With all the stresses in the millennial generations lives, it is unfortunate that social media is another factor that could lead to more harmful issues such as depression and anxiety. Overall, one could agree that the benefits of Instagram include expressing yourself, and virtually staying in contact with family and friends through pictures, however, its effects can be detrimental to one’s self-worth and confidence. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sydneylandry (talkcontribs) 00:22, 10 November 2016 (UTC)

Snapchat-like

@LocalNet: I'm here to resolve the dispute on whether Instagram Stories is a "Snapchat-like" feature based on your revert. Yes, it's clear Instagram Stories resembles Snapchat Stories, even the name is exactly the same. However, is it exactly the same in every way? The design is clearly a bit different, and the way it works is not the same (e.g. If the image or video was selected from the photo library, it won't tell that to everyone like Snapchat did. Now, we can say that it's just similar, and whether it's similar is pretty subjective. Moreover, sources are not always right, even if they are considered reliable. We only cite sources for facts, not opinions, the author's opinion isn't a fact. We can't assume that everyone agrees that it's a "Snapchat-like" feature. See WP:ASSERT and WP:POV. Hi @Hayman30: Thank you for starting a discussion on the talk page! You're making good argumentation, and I agree with your reasoning here. @Hayman30: Just one error I didn't discover until now. Without the comparison being made in the section, the sudden notice of "surpassing Snapchat's user growth" makes almost no sense. "Photographic filters"

Hi everybody! I'm not personally an active Instagram user, so I need feedback from someone who is regarding the "Photographic filters" section. Are details on individual filters valuable to this article, or would a short description to explain filters suffice? The problem with its current setup is obviously the lack of sources. But throwing WP:V out the window for a moment, I'm not sure it's a highly debatable topic anyway. Sources are definitely always preferred, but I don't personally picture anyone saying "WRONG!". I could be mistaken, however, and the information does need sources. But first questions first, anybody here active users who feel it either does or doesn't need detailed explanations? Shadowban on Instagram

There has been recent discussions about the shadowban that Instagram have released the past few months.

The shadowban means that Instagram has censored some of the information that is being posted to prevent unwanted content. This does mean that if you use a hashtag that has been highlighted on these posts your post too may be blocked regardless of the content of your post.

This also can lead to your whole account being blocked if you continue to use these banned hashtags. The thing about the shadowban is you may not know why or that it has even happened to you until you realise your followers are not increasing. Social Treats (talk) 18:11, 28 June 2017 (UTC)

Hi @Social Treats: While I did find a few results when searching for "instagram shadowban", I could not find enough from reliable sources. They seem to be personal blogs and promotional websites. Furthermore, please be aware that the name of your Wikipedia account is "Social Treats" and you linked to your own website above, which is a clear conflict-of-interest. LocalNet (talk) 18:45, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
New information has surfaced supporting the addition of "Shadowbanning", including The Next Web and Mic. I will try to write something in the article. :) LocalNet (talk) 13:51, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

In Instagram#Trends the text

"through hashtags, which are specific keywords combined with an asterisk that"

should probably be

"through hashtags, which are specific keywords combined with a hash symbol that"

While there are many possible names for the symbol to quibble over, "asterisk" is definitely wrong. ThatPixGuy (talk) 07:05, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

In all the social media websites, there must be login type added.

In all the social media websites, or the websites in which there is login, we must added proper description that how a user can login. like in some social media there is only login by phone number or in some email is only login or in some any of both are valid. There must be Login Type added in Infobox Software. Examples

Login Type - Only by Phone Number Login Type - Only by Email address(or Username) Login Type - Phone Number or Email address(or Username)(Any) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Niharpatel123456 (talkcontribs) 18:59, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

Sometimes referred to as "IG"

I suggest the fact that Instagram is (sometimes? often?) referred to as "IG" is included in this article. I was reading this BBC article: [6] and it used "IG" many times and it took me quite a while to realise what it meant. This BBC article is may not be sufficient as a reference though.

I note that the article IG lists Instagram as a possible meaning. FrankSier (talk) 16:26, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

Formal request has been received to merge the article Censorship of Instagram into Instagram; dated: July 2018. Possibly, the content can also be merged into Internet censorship in the People's Republic of China. Pinging proposer @Caorongjin: Discuss here. Richard3120 (talk) 00:10, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Hello all. Under Instagram#Features and tools, there's a section on virtual models, which confused me since it is just describing some of the users inside the platform, rather than stating its platform features. Before doing any actions, I would like some community's input. Should it be moved or removed from the article? Cheers. –Wefk423 (talk) 17:43, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

In the standalone apps there is one that is not mentioned anyway called Direct for Instagram which they did a trial run with. It is the instagram direct section of the app, cut into another one, requiring you to switch apps to use direct. It also includes a standalone camera for uploading to your stories, and a stories tab, to view the list of stories. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.instagram.direct&hl=en , note that the screenshots there are slightly out of date. New Section

I'm new to Wikipedia, but I was going through the article and I think it would be better if you added a section talking about how Instagram now changed from just a digital platform to a career place. so you could give examples about the popular people online who has millions of followers and their effects on the society nowadays. --Stsi77 (talk) 18:52, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Please expand

This is a very well written article with lots of helpful information. However, I think the article could expand upon the benefits of using Instagram as well as the downsides to using the app. Also, how the app affects the individual user based on how much time is spent using the site. The article could explain how Instagram is linked to happiness and/or loneliness and depression. Again, it is a very good article it could just expand upon a few topics. What effects

This article has a lot of helpful information about the application of Instagram for those who many not have knowledge about the social media. But, I think the article could use more information about the effects that the application may have on its users. To be specific, the effects caused by the amount of time spent on the media, what it does to a user's mental state, and what effects it has on its users over all. Fire OS: different from Android?

I've added a few references about the Fire OS app, as the Amazon Appstore includes Instagram, although the store doesn't have as many quality apps as Google Play. I'm aware that Fire OS is a fork of Android, and that the Appstore works on regular Android devices, too. Should the Fire OS release on the Amazon Appstore be treated differently from the regular Android release on Google Play? Both are better maintained than the Windows build, that's for sure. --LABcrabs (talk) 23:05, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Fire OS is an Android source-compatible operating system. Use of the Android trademarks typically implicate Google approval and use of Play Store. ViperSnake151  Talk  00:18, 21 December 2019 (UTC)

Instagram profiles viewer - solution following problems: sign in to view public profiles; anonymously view users' Story

The following just before the sentence "In November 2019, it was reported that Instagram had begun to pilot a new video feature known as "Reels".":

Censorship of Palestinian apartheid content during the Israeli bombing of Gaza

Hi, can we mention in the controversies section about the claims that social media companies were pressured by the Israeli goverment to censor any content highlighting the atrocities by Israel? And complicit by preventing pro-Palestine content?

https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20210517-digital-rights-group-slams-israeli-attempt-to-censor-palestinians-on-social-media/ https://www.theguardian.com/media/2021/may/26/pro-palestine-censorship-facebook-instagram

While the Guardian piece can function as a source, this is an extremely controversial topic and the section needs careful wording to fit WP:NPOV. Certainly not appropriate to call Instagram 'complicit'. Best would be something like "Civil rights groups claimed that Facebook was censoring pro-Palestine content on its platforms during the 2021 clashes between Israel and Palestine" ASpacemanFalls (talk) 16:23, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

More on Culture & Mental Health

There is a great deal of information on the features of Instagram and critiques of Instagram's updates, but there are brief descriptions in the culture section of the article, which only mentioned Ellie Goulding's new song, and instead, the article could expand more on Instagram's overall culture and its role in the media and even in spreading awareness about important movements that have become more prominent in the last year. During the mental health section, the article discussed a study conducted in 2017, and it is evident that more recent information had to be said about the matter. --GoBears243 (talk) 03:00, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

Instagram starts to censor scientific articles

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10088147/Instagram-censors-evolutionary-biologist-post-transgender-study-Olympic-sports.html - this should absolutely be mentioned, as Instagram now is part of the anti-science movement that censors scientific articles for ideological reasons. --Conspiration 16:11, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

Please change back all instances of "Meta, Inc" to "Facebook inc", except in present tense contexts. This is the standard convention all across the encyclopaedia: companies are nearly always referred to by the name they were called at the time the events being written about took place. Doing otherwise would be anachronistic; the past can't be rewritten! 2600:1702:4960:1DE0:14D5:5FC9:8C5F:AB3A (talk) 08:29, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

Done. Confirming that any sourced information predating the rebranding on 28 October 2021 should refer to the parent company as 'Facebook, Inc.' Otherwise, use 'Meta Platforms, Inc.' Heartmusic678 (talk) 15:21, 8 November 2021 (UTC)

Loneliness

"Instagram users were less lonely than non-users"? There're various studies shows that Instagram and social media use makes you more lonely. Anxiety and depression are correlated with loneliness, so loneliness will also increase. SharonAnama (talk) 06:39, 10 November 2021 (UTC) Instagram creates an open space for users get the illusion of real connection. However, the act of forging a connection online may be the issue itself. The substitution of adequate connections can cause a sense of loneliness.

Recent edit

Hi all,

I just revamped the "scientific section" (previously "impact on people." I tried to improve it as best I could, but it is not perfect. I don't know the correct policy for removing citations but I feel that there are too many. I also changed the heading's level so that they wouldn't affect the TOC as majorly as before.

I also edited the business impact section. I feel that it needs to be largened or removed altogether. I used a questionable source as it was the best one that I could find, and was better than the uncited material previously.

Thanks,

Meta bans users who post images of relevant art

Meta bans users who post images of relevant art, and it's been very strict lately. Meta does not take into account how carefully the images are selected, curated and described. Hashtags are not handled transparently, but according to an algorithm that is opaque to outsiders.

Here are just a few examples of masterpieces “undesirable” on Instagram:

- The Renaissance painting «Death of Lucretia by Lucas Cranach the Elder

- A statue of Stig Blomberg standing in a public park in Stockholm

- A (nude) water nymph belonging to the Louvre Paris. clearly an allegory (and correspondingly hashtagged) entitled "The Source". Presumably, Meta expects water nymphs to wear a costume. This clearly affects artistic freedom, because certain things can no longer be presented in a meaningful way.

- The famous German expressionist August Macke etc,, etc., etc...

Cat videos seem to be expressly allowed...

...up and down.

The representatives of Meta (a big company) would certainly be strong enough to say: okay, that's 500 or 2000 years old, recognized art, we'll let that through. But instead they cower in fear and have implemented a piece of low-tech software that triggers whenever a bit of bare skin or a nipple is detected. These responsible person can easily be automated away, because they bring neither technical nor intellectual added value. They also gamble away their last assets, which are common sense and courage. They just don't have balls! Re probst (talk) 00:34, 4 June 2023 (UTC)
