Criticism and Controversies

[edit]

Hello, I have added a criticism tag similar to that in Rodrigo Duterte's article page to inform our readers regarding sections in an article that may compromise its neutrality. This is also to identify/quarantine content that needs more verification/examination by the community. If you see content that are untrue or unverifiable (with no sources) please feel free to remove them. But for those with reliable sources(citations), please identify them so we can examine the sources and determine whether it is maliciously rewritten, so we can remove them. Sctcooper (talk) 05:33, 7 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia.
Thanks for noticing the changes, and wanting to work on them.
WP:BLP begins with emphasis on the special care required with such information, including, Contentious material about living persons (or, in some cases, recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced—whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable—should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion.
I've started two discussions on the larger matter of such content being added to multiple related articles:
  1. Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard#Reviews_needed_of_some_articles_related_to_Rodrigo_Duterte
  2. Wikipedia_talk:Tambayan_Philippines#Reviews_needed_of_some_articles_related_to_Rodrigo_Duterte
I also had a brief discussion with the involved editor at User_talk:Ronz#About_removed_edits.
If you want to try to salvage some/all of this content, I suggest:
  1. Start by working through some Wikipedia tutorials so you are familiar with the basics, and carefully review Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons and Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Discretionary sanctions.
  2. Work on the content in small pieces.
  3. Discuss the reliablity of the references, and look for better references.
  4. Discuss the suitability of the content for an encyclopedia article in light of the references.
I'm happy to help, though I'd like to get others involved as for the reasons I previously mentioned at BLPN. --Ronz (talk) 16:51, 7 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
For example, the assault on the sheriff:
It has one source. I'm unfamiliar with the publisher, so I'll simply assume it's reliable to move long to other issues.
The source is ambiguous on the date of the event. I'd guess it was reported one full week later.
Given that it was witnessed by a large crowd and was televised, it seems due some mention.
This happened seven years ago. Where's the follow-up reporting?
Without more references and the larger context of what happened after, I think it should be trimmed. --Ronz (talk) 16:14, 8 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The content added is just fine. It's sourced, it's relevant. Sennen Goroshi ! (talk) 17:54, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The burden is on those seeking to include the material.
I didn't get much response from the discussions: Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard/Archive277#Reviews_needed_of_some_articles_related_to_Rodrigo_Duterte, Wikipedia_talk:Tambayan_Philippines/Archive42#Reviews_needed_of_some_articles_related_to_Rodrigo_Duterte --Ronz (talk) 02:40, 18 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think its sourced very well. Using editorials, twisting words... and the sources are only per paragraph. Also as per WP:BLP, an original interpretation or analysis of a source isn't allowed. For example, the statement that says "Duterte admitted corruption" was said by Trillanes, an outspoken Duterte critic. ITSQUIETUPTOWN talkcontribs 11:34, 22 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It's only you who is complaining about it. It's cited and relevant content. Go to ANI if you don't like it. Sennen Goroshi ! (talk) 14:23, 19 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Please follow WP:DR and attempt to find consensus for inclusion of the material, as required by WP:BLP. --Ronz (talk) 19:18, 19 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's great. Unfortunately, the burden is YOURS to gain consensus to remove the material. The inclusion of the material is supported by consensus, from October 2017 until November 2018 the content remained unchallenged on the article. You do understand BRD don't you? The article was stable, you made a bold edit, it was reverted - now YOU get to discuss the content and YOU can try to gain consensus for removal. Until that time it stays. Sennen Goroshi ! (talk) 00:09, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately Sorry, but you're wrong per BLP and ONUS.
Instead of edit-warring, how about addressing my concerns? --Ronz (talk) 00:16, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Lecturing me on edit-warring while reverting me? Nice move. Sennen Goroshi ! (talk) 00:27, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I've requested help at BLPN: Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard#Sara_Duterte --Ronz (talk) 00:37, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • If User:Ronz is waiting for a published follow-up on the punching-the-sheriff story, here is one item from June 2012: "Sara Duterte says sorry for mauling sheriff" Ronz, does this address your BLP concern about the story? If S. Duterte is apologizing then this must confirm at least that the event happened. 2012 is still seven years ago, but if you think this makes it not deserve space in the article you must be appealing to WP:DUE, which is not enough grounds for a BLP revert under WP:3RRNO. The latter is focussed on blatant BLP violations such as unsourced defamation. EdJohnston (talk) 04:49, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. I don't know what sources might be reliable in this case, but two disbarment cases were made over the incident: [1] [2].
As I wrote earlier, some mention is due. She apologized. He apologized. He didn't press charges. Two disbarment cases were filed against her.
I think we should insert some information about the incident.
I think everything in the removed content needs to be reviewed with the same level of detail. I expect little or nothing will deserve to be restored without substantial changes. --Ronz (talk) 05:12, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

FIRST CHANGE:

Please change this line:

> Sara Vicenta Zimmerman Duterte-Carpio (English: /dəˈtɜːrteɪ/, Tagalog: [dʊˈtɛɾtɛ] Spanish: [ˈkaɾ.pjo]; born May 31, 1978),[1] commonly known as Inday Sara

to:

> Sara Zimmerman Duterte-Carpio (English: /dəˈtɜːrteɪ/, Tagalog: [dʊˈtɛɾtɛ] Spanish: [ˈkaɾ.pjo]; born May 31, 1978),[1] commonly known as Inday Sara

Proof: I have ID / Birth Certificate as proof that Vicenta is not her name.

SECOND CHANGE:

Please change this line:

> They have three children: an adopted daughter, Mikhaila María, nicknamed Sharky,

to:

> They have three children: a daughter, Mikhaila María, nicknamed Sharky,

In Philippine law, once adopted you're adopted, you are not supposed to be labelled as "adopted". You are considered legitimate child. Iamrobertson08 (talk) 19:52, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: We need reliable secondary sources, not primary sources that you personally are in possession of, to make a change. Additionally, the fact that the child is adopted is of note regardless of Phillippine law. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 13:48, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
