Typekit is an online service which offers a subscription library of high-quality fonts.[1] The fonts may be used directly on websites or synced via Adobe Creative Cloud to applications on the subscriber's computers.[2]

Characteristics

Typekit is an online service which provides subscribers with access, under a single licensing agreement, to its font library.[3]

For web site use the service works with the @font-face CSS property and JavaScript.[1] Visitors to a web site who have disabled javascript in their browser will therefore not see the fonts.

History

Typekit was launched in November 2009 by Small Batch, Inc.,[1] a company run by creators of the Google Analytics service.[4] In October 2011, the service was acquired by Adobe.[5]

Alternatives

Typotheque launched the first commercial webfont service in October 2009.[6]

Google introduced a competing, free service named Google Web Fonts in May 2010.[7][8]

Clearleft and OmniTI launched Fontdeck in June 2010.[9]

Font Bureau and Ascender Corporation launched the Webtype service in October 2010.[10]
