List of episodes[edit]

At the start of the year, EastEnders aired four episodes each week in a time slot of 8:00 pm on Mondays and Fridays, and 7:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, though episodes were sometimes moved or extra episodes added for different reasons. Beginning the week commencing 7 March, the show aired four consecutive episodes from Mondays to Thursdays, all in a time slot of 7:30 pm.[27] Whereas in the latter half of 2020 and the majority of 2021, COVID-19 restrictions meant that episodes were roughly 20 to 25 minutes in length, the beginning of 2022 saw a return to the original broadcast format with the exception of Tuesdays, which remained within a 20-minute duration.[28] Tuesday episodes eventually returned to 30 minutes from 5 April.[29] Socially distanced filming continued into 2022, with actors doing their own hair and make-up.[30] Social distancing was later reduced in March.[31] Kate Oates continued her role as senior executive producer from 2018,[32] and Jon Sen continued his role as executive producer, also from 2018, producing the episodes.[33] On 12 November 2021, it was announced that Sen would step down from his role as executive producer and would be replaced by Chris Clenshaw in 2022.[34] Sen's final episode was broadcast on 10 March, after which Oates temporarily became the show's sole executive producer.[35] Clenshaw was then credited as executive producer for the episode broadcast on 2 June, and then permanently from 4 July onwards.[36]

The episode airing on 7 March was the first episode to be filmed on the new EastEnders set, a project which began in 2014 and cost a total of £87.6 million.[37]

All official ratings cover a period of seven days from the original broadcast and are taken from the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board (BARB).[38] Airdates, credits, running times and episode summaries are taken from episodes, the official EastEnders website[39] and BBC programmes schedules.[40] Episode numbers are taken from Radio Times.[41]

January[edit]

The beginning of the year focuses on the aftermath of New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, as depicted in the final episode of 2021, where a bomb planted by far-right extremists Aaron Monroe (Charlie Wernham) and Neil Hughes (Thomas Coombes) was discovered in the derelict Argee Bhajee restaurant, which is due to be converted to a mosque.[42] Pam Coker (Lin Blakley) returned to support Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) in the wake of a further homophobic attack led by Neil's gang.[21] January's episodes also depict the continuation of an ongoing feud between Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) and Kim Fox (Tameka Empson), where Phil goes on the run with his and Denise Fox's (Diane Parish) son Raymond Dawkins (Michael Jose Pomares Calixte) after Kim discovers Phil's involvement in her late husband Vincent Hubbard's (Richard Blackwood) death.[43] On-location filming for these scenes took place in Clacton-on-Sea and St Osyth in November 2021.[44] Elsewhere, Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) encourages Stuart Highway (Ricky Champ) to be open with his wife, Rainie Highway (Tanya Franks), about being diagnosed with male breast cancer. EastEnders worked with Macmillan Cancer Support to produce the storyline.[45]

February[edit]

February covers storylines such as Chelsea Atkins (Zaraah Abrahams) succumbing to her husband Gray Atkins' (Toby-Alexander Smith) manipulation, resulting in her growing reclusive and separate from her friends and family,[49] and Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) becoming a victim of bullying, seeking protection from his stepfather-to-be Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden).[50] Both storylines reached their peak towards the end of the month, where an altercation between Gray and Kheerat Panesar (Jaz Deol) resulted in the latter physically injuring Gray and leaving him in a coma before going on the run,[51] while Phil unwittingly discovered the remains of a deceased Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White)—murdered by Gray—in the Argee Bhajee while trying to protect Tommy.[52] Scenes elsewhere depict Stacey Slater's (Lacey Turner) latest snack van business venture and worrying about her mother Jean Slater's (Gillian Wright) increasingly erratic behaviour.[53]

June[edit]

On 1 April, it was confirmed that EastEnders had filmed a special episode to honour the Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II, with Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall making special guest appearances.[65] It was later revealed that Simon May would produce a special Jubilee edition of the EastEnders theme tune to mark the occasion.[66] This month also featured a car crash involving Janine (Brooks) and Linda (Bright) in scenes filmed on-location in April.[67]
