Your GA nomination of Lewis Ludington
[edit]The article Lewis Ludington you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Lewis Ludington for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Edge3 -- Edge3 (talk) 17:42, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

GA review for Crypt of Civilization
[edit]Hi @Doug Coldwell:
I'm afraid that Crypt of Civilization has failed its GA review. It is clear to me that the article still has a very long way to go. (I have assessed it as 'C class'.) My prime concern is that several statements are not supported by the references given. I asked you to check through all citations thoroughly, however this problem still stands and my view now is that you will not be able to fix this issue on your own without support in the next seven days. The text itself is not particularly well written. I am willing to spend some time on the article to help to solve some of these concerns, however in doing so, I will compromise the independence of my review. I have therefore decided to fail the article and to let you renominate for someone else to look at, once we have both spent more time on it.
Having read through your user page and your talk page, I can see that you are engaged in a drive to raise many articles to GA status. I commend your enthusiasm, but would note that in at least one other case, you have nominated an article with basic errors that was not ready for review. Your comment to Cleveland Todd about the James Hood Wright article, suggests that your prime motivation is "earn[ing] a green icon credit for Good Article", rather than perhaps to make articles as good as they can possibly be. I therefore urge you slow down, to check articles through more thoroughly before nominating them, to ask for help from other editors and to focus on building a high-quality encyclopedia, rather than on 'badge collecting'.
With very best wishes Mertbiol (talk) 08:52, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
- I have spent around an hour working on the article this morning. Any review that I attempted to undertake at this stage, would be compromised by my involvement in the editing, which is why it is best for me to step back now. In my opinion Crypt of Civilization is now approaching B class. I feel it still needs considerable work before it is renominated for GA and it would still struggle to satisfy the 'broad in its coverage' criterion. You may wish to get in touch with Oglethorpe University to ask if a book on the Crypt is available that you could use to improve the article. (A published book would be a better source than the newspaper and magazine articles used so far.) The University may be willing to provide additional photos as well - there is no harm asking!
- I would urge you to thoroughly check all of the references, before any renomination takes place.
- I hope you feel my input has been useful - the article is dramatically improved since yesterday. I wish you all the very best for your future editing. Best wishes, Mertbiol (talk) 10:08, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Mertbiol: Since you have as much authorship into the article as I do and you have made some great improvements, I will make a proposal for you to consider. I'm going to continue reviewing the references and add more where I can. Newspaper clips have worked great for me for 100 Good Articles and seem to be acceptable to these GA reviewers that have reviewed my nominations (over 50). If you want to continue copy editing (whatever you care to do) and then when you feel the article is ready again for GAN you become the nominator. We can both then answer the reviewer's issues when that time comes. Then YOU will earn a GA green icon for being the nominator and I will earn a GA green icon for being the creator of the article. In either case I plan on turning the article into a Good Article. I plan on having 200 Good Articles total, shown by green icons on my User Page, by December 30, 2021. I have 500 Did You Know articles already. I just created today an article on the Language Integrator and nominated it for Did You Know. If the GA proposal sounds interesting, let me know. Meanwhile I will continue improving the article.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 15:19, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Doug Coldwell: Thanks for your message. I am really not interested in collecting green GA icons. I am a Wikipedia editor, because I want to build an encyclopedia, principally by writing articles on subjects that I am passionate about. While I find the Crypt of Civilization interesting, I do not have enough expertise to expand the article (which is what it needs for GA). In my opinion, the newspaper and magazine articles will not give you the depth necessary to make a good encyclopedia article. You really need a more detailed source - not something I can help with. So I thank you for your kind offer and wish you happy editing in the future. Best wishes, Mertbiol (talk) 15:46, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Mertbiol: The article I created today on the Language Integrator and nominated for Did You Know, has been approved already (7 hours later). Many of my Did You Know articles get approved within a day. Check out the captions on these pictures and you will see that the fasest Did You Know on the main page was 36 hours after I created it from scratch. For newspaper articles written up on me about my Wikipedia activities see the caption under my picture on my User Page. Sure you wouldn't want to reconsider participating in making Crypt of Civilization a Good Article. Then you can add another green icon to your User Page when the article gets promoted. I want to give you the opportunity, since you have the same authorship in it as I do.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 22:06, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
- Mertbiol - FYI Language Integrator was made using ONLY newspaper clips. Most of my 500 Did You Knows I did over the last 15 years are mostly (if not all) referenced from newspaper clips. They have been reviewed and approved by over 200 different reviewers (many those of the top DYK editors) and they all thought that newspaper clips and magazine articles had the same quality as book references and were all accepted.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 22:17, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Doug Coldwell: Thanks for your message. As I have said before, I am here to build an encyclopedia, not to collect green icons. If collecting green icons is your goal, then I wish you luck with it, but there are many on Wikipedia for whom that is not important. I am interested in writing articles on subjects that I am passionate about and if they can gain recognition with a GA status, then that is great, but I am not in a race to collect as many as I can.
- Congratulations on your DYK - it is a very good hook. I am not convinced that the article itself is necessary - it could easily be a subsection of Mutoscope. Yes, it's true that you have made that article using only newspaper articles, but that is not the same as getting it to GA status.
- Thank you again for getting in touch and I wish you happy editing. Mertbiol (talk) 22:32, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
- O.K. - Just wanted to give you the opportunity. FYI, it so happens that Did You Knows are my specialty. Of all the articles I have created over the last 15 years, 97% became Did You Know articles (500). I'm sure you know how to verify that. Of the multiple articles in the same hook I created, the 30-in-1 was all from magazine articles (which I got from the Library of Congress).--Doug Coldwell (talk) 22:49, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Mertbiol: Many of my Good Articles are done with newspaper articles and have been approved by over 50 of the top GA reviewers. Take for example Automatic scorer. You can get a free subscription to Newspapers.com (normally expensive) from the Wikipedia library. It turns out that all I am doing is upgrading my 500 Did You Know articles. Since I am already familiar with the article I created, then in most cases it is not that difficult to do an upgrade to Good Article status. In October of 2020 I upgraded 34 of my DYK articles to Good Article status in the 31 days of the month. My first Good Article was for Carl Edgar Myers which has over 30,000 characters. I'm sure you noticed the newspaper articles written up on me and my Wikipedia activities from the caption of my picture on my User Page. The first article was a front page newspaper article about how passionate I am in improving the encyclopedia, especially in articles about my home town and my home state and articles on electrical & electronics and about technology. So as you can see making Good Articles is just a spin-off and natural outcrop of my Did You Know articles for further improving the encyclopedia. Since the UK variant of the Coronavirus is showing up all over the United States, I see the Stay Home and Stay Safe orders being in place for at least another year - so I have a project to keep me occupied on my 3 PCs by upgrading my Did You Know articles.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 12:15, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi @Doug Coldwell:
Thanks again for your message. You have obviously found a way to contribute to Wikipedia, that gives you a great deal of satisfaction and local recognition. Congratulations.
There are other ways to contribute to building the encyclopedia - strange though that might seem to you. Yes, automatic scorer is a well written article, with lots of sources, but on average over 90 days, it had 9 readers per day. Taking a few more of your articles at random: Mary Myers had five readers per day; Southern Railway's Spencer Shops had six readers per day; William Austin Burt had 31 readers per day; 1877 U.S. Patent Office fire had five readers per day (all averaged over 90 days).
My interest is in writing articles that are of use to a wider audience - the ones I choose to focus on are significantly longer than yours and require much greater research, but they also attract a few hundred readers per day.
What I am trying to say to you is that there are different ways of making a worthwhile contribution to Wikipedia. You have found one way, which works for you and I have found another, which works for me. No one should try to claim that one approach is better than the other.
I wish you every success. Happy editing Mertbiol (talk) 12:44, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
Hi @Mertbiol: - thanks for response. I am working off my list of potential GANs. Should any of them (without a date) look interesting, I welcome a co-nomination for a Good Article upgrade if you want to work together on any of my previous DYK articles. Also I welcome another review from you on any of my GANs - I have a few nominations in the queue - maybe some will look interesting to you like Crypt of Civilization did. My goal is to make 100 Good Articles in 2021 from upgrades of my Did You Know articles. See you around. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 13:14, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
- FYI, since I specialize in Did You Know articles, my high view hit is on the day my DYK article comes on the main page. Many have been entered into the DYK Hall of Fame for over 5,000 views on that day. Many viewers have then clicked on my articles based on the fact they looked interesting to them - pretty much why you reviewed my Crypt of Civilization article. It so happens that my article I created on Westinghouse Time Capsules had over 25,000 views on the day it was presented on the main page. Interestingly my multiple article Did You Know on Plague doctor had over 44,000 views -AND- is based on the same kind of virus disease idea we have today of the coronavirus (right down to the hazmat suit). My wife and I have received our second Pfizer vaccination shot. How are you doing on your vaccinations? I happen to be in the top 5% (#18 of 360) of the List of Wikipedians by number of DYKs and have learned some really good editing techniques from the top TEN on this list that I have worked with for many years.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 14:08, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Mertbiol: I notice you now have TWO green icons on your User Page. You could have dozens IF you want to be co-nominator on any of my potential GANs (without a date), as I plan on making 100 Good Articles in 2021. Consider this - Wikipedia library gives for free the expensive subscription to Newspapers.com for those that will use it for their articles. Also out of my 500 Did You Knows, they were done by over 200 reviewers and they all use newspaper clippings for references. Out of my 120 Good Articles there has been over 50 reviewers involved and most of those articles use newspaper clippings for references. That means that over 250 top reviewers have accepted newspaper clippings and magazine articles as equal to book references. None (other than you) have had any objections to them - in fact many encourage the use of them! So my suggestion is, IF you want an excellent abundant source of references for your articles get the free subscription to Newspapers.com at Wikipedia library. Tell them the reason you want it is to produce Good Articles and they will give you the expensive subscription for free. Just trying to make editing 100 times easier for you, so you can produce many Good Articles as I have. I also happen to be one of those that promote double masking - you know, that practice which Anthony Fauci does.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 20:15, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi @Mertbiol: - According to this name account you have created 12 articles and 11 are Stub or Start level. Over the last 20 days they have received a total of 1739 views or an average of 145 daily views. Maybe you are talking about another account you have where your articles attract a few hundred readers per day. The one article alone I created on Conclusion of the American Civil War had three times (5,189) as many views in the last 20 days as all your articles combined. Of my 515 articles I created they average a little over 50 views per article per day over the last 20 days. That is 25,750 views per day worldwide of readers that have looked at my articles. That works out to be over a half million views in the last 20 days of people worldwide that have looked at my articles.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 15:31, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Doug Coldwell:
- I do not understand why you are continuing to try to engage me in discussion. I have said 'no' to you politely several times. I will not respond to you again. I am very pleased that you have found a way of contributing to Wikipedia that brings personal satisfaction to you and recognition in your community. However there are other ways in which equally valid and important contributions can be made. To explain:
- Wikipedia is not my life. I am a research scientist at one of the UK's top universities and have produced over thirty publications (to which my real name is attached) since I gained my PhD around 12 years ago;
- I edit articles that I am interested in, as and when I have time to do so and have in depth resources available;
- Yes, I have created about a dozen articles - a very long time ago, mostly when I was in graduate school. At the time those articles needed to be created, but that doesn't mean that I am duty bound to bring them to GA status. Why should it matter to me or to anyone else if these articles are still start class? The fact that they are does not make me a bad editor;
- I am not interested in collecting as many green icons as I possibly can - I don't have time and I don't get the feeling of reward that obviously motivates you. I am sorry that you don't understand this, but my contribution to my local community, my country and the wider world is recognised in other ways. I will never value myself by the number of green icons that I collect on an anonymous Wikipedia account;
- I want to improve articles that will be read. Yes, I am sure that some of yours have a wide readership, but that is not the case for the majority. As I said, I am not casting judgement - different people will contribute to Wikipedia in different ways;
- Finally you seem to have misunderstood the point about newspaper articles. They are, of course, valid references for Wikipedia articles. However the articles which you cited for the Crypt of Civilization article, essentially say much the same thing. None of them talk in detail about how the idea was conceived or how objects were chosen. These are areas which I think you need to cover in the article concerned and this is the reason why I recommended you approach the University to ask if a book was available which would cover the subject in more depth;
- I am delighted that you have found a way of contributing to Wikipedia that brings personal satisfaction to you, but please respect my opinion that your way does not work for me. I wish you all the very best in the future and happy editing Mertbiol (talk) 15:58, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Mertbiol: This is a comment that requires no response. I have more GANs then the next 5 highest editor amounts combined and added up together. I have 3 dozen (check) GANs in the queue and welcome a review from you. You are an excellent reviewer and copy editor. Perhaps you might find one of my GANs interesting. I'm working your suggestions for Crypt of Civilization and making those improvements. I'll resubmit GAN later.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 20:32, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

- Things are okay on my end. Haven't got the vaccine yet. What the 'numbers' aren't reflecting is the number of people who test positive then get over it in a week or two, just like the regular flue. I know of three people personally who tested positive, then negative. What the numbers also don't reflect is that most people who do die from COVID already had serious health issues to begin with. Like all issues in life, everything is exaggerated and they only give us half the picture. Oh well.. Keeping my fingers crossed. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 20:36, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Gwillhickers: Probably asked you this before, but what part of California are you at. I used to live in San Diego for 20 years (Del Mar area). I was a real estate broker selling REOs. - I live just out side Tehachapi, California, at the foot of the Tehachapi Mountains, overlooking the Mojave Desert. Because we're north of the desert at a higher elevation we don't get the 100+ degree temps in the summer like they do down below. Our summers average about 85-90 degrees, which by eastern standards is hot, but by south-western standers that's 'pretty dang cool'. In the spring time there are all sorts of flowers that cover the desert and the mountains. The mountains are covered with trees and wild boars live up there in the upper most areas. During the winter we get some snow, while the upper mountain area gets plenty of snow. The Mojave desert is not exactly a desert, because there's plant life all year around, esp in the spring. Lot's of brush and Joshua trees. Lots of coyoties, prairie rabbits, gophers, ground squirrels and hawks too. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 22:00, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Congratulations
[edit]Your DYK hook about the Language Integrator and its intended use as a peep show for inhabitants of the 82nd century drew 19,919 page views (830 per hour) while on the Main Page. It was one of the most viewed hooks during the month of February and earned a place near the top of the Best of February list. Even more impressive, it qualifies for the all-time list of best non-lead hooks. Keep up the great work! Cbl62 (talk) 16:43, 2 March 2021 (UTC)
