Hi there John, and nice to meet you! I've just finished to do some massive work on the Texas Ranger Division article, and if you have the time, I'd like you to have a look at it. Also, I've just submitted it to Peer Review, and I'd love to have your input as a Texan and a serious critic. *Hugs*, Shauri Yes babe? 03:14, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

Dear John, thank you so much for your encouraging words and your support. Hopefully, we'll be nominating it for FAC after some minor issues are adressed at Peer Review. Let's cross our fingers and hope we can get another Texan FA
Have a nice day! *Hugs*, Shauri Yes babe? 20:12, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
My dear John, once again I'm in your debt for your beautiful words, your support and your trust in me. I wish I could find the words to express my gratitude, but I can't - as if what you've already done for me wasn't enough, you're still giving me more and more. Thank you, John, that's all I can say. You truly are a beautiful person. Big big hugs from your Spanish friend over here, Shauri smile! 22:17, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

Kerry as a Jew

[edit]

Hi. I notice you were puzzled that Kerry could be both a Catholic and a Jew. "Jew" is both a religious and an ethnic designation. Check out http://judaism.about.com/od/jewishgenealogy/a/jewpas_kerry.htm for a commentary regarding his jewish ethnic ancestry. - Tεxτurε 21:26, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

I just went and left a note at Category talk:Jewish Americans. The category is described as "Americans of ethnic Jewish descent". I think that means he applies to the category. The question I left on the talk page is where is the religious Jew category? - Tεxτurε 21:35, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

Good idea, but it's going to be a lot of work. There are hundreds of ethnic jews listed in the existing category. - Tεxτurε 21:40, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

Johntex,

This is from p217 of the full text:

...Youth also expressed that the foreskin
reduced sexual pleasure for men. Some likened the presence of a foreskin to
wearing a condom: "Some boys say that to them it is less sensational to have
sex with the condom on ... the same way as when one has the foreskin
intact ... unlike a circumcised man they don t experience maximum
sensation"...

My RfA!

[edit]

My dear John, I've been thanking all those who supported my RfA, but I've intentionally left the task of thanking those whose support was special to me for the end, so here you are. I've barely had the chance to know you yet, but before you came to my support, I already was familiar with you through your contributions. I must confess I admire you sincerely, and the fact that you gave me your trust without even knowing me, meant a lot to me. I've been considering you as my friend for days for your confidence in me and your beautiful words, and I offer you my sincere friendship, should you accept it. What is it with you Texans? Why are you all guys so likeable? Warm hugs! Your friend, Shauri Yes babe? 00:28, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

JT -- A follow-up:

Evidently, one of the WikiAdministrators didn't see your message and removed the site with the folowing message:

Copyright processing - California Space Authority Hi there. I've deleted the content in California Space Authority. If you could provide some evidence that you hold the copyright and can release it into the public domain via the GFDL I'll restore the article's content. --HappyCamper 03:15, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:WSpaceport"

I've send HC a response, and will message the CSA's COO and ExecDir to have them verify my veracity -- unless you want to intercede first since you originally flagged it (The California Space Authority/Temp page still appears to be up at the present time).

Regards, WSpaceport 06:47, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

Ah! This is where the conversation is. Let's direct all future discussions to here instead: Talk:California Space Authority/Temp - it will be much easier to keep track of everything. Plus, once the copyright problems are resolved, we can move that conversation back into the main article namespace - this will be better for the article as it would give it more grounding should there be any further copyright violation disputes. --HappyCamper 15:51, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

I've commented on your vote in this AFD. Merges require the edit history to be kept, which makes "Delete and merge" an invalid vote. Could you please revisit and change it? - Mgm|(talk) 22:14, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for the note. I made a mistake. I meant to say Delete and redirect. I think it would be nice if the useful info could be kept on the Halo page, I am not worried about the edit history. I would also be OK with a simple delete if the consensus is that a redirect is not warranted. Johntex\talk 14:53, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

Details on the Meetup

[edit]

I went to the Town and Country area last night to check out restaurants. I've eaten at the restaurants in Town and Country and they weren't that great, ao I wanted to find us somewhere nearby. There is a nice but expensive steak house down the street, but I don't know what everyone's budget is. I picked this place, I hope it is OK with everyone:

  • 7:00pm Tuesday October 18th
  • 24-Hour Valley Kitchen Family Restaurant
  • 875 Hotel Circle South, Mission Valley, 619-819-1017 or 619-298-8282.
  • It is right across Highway 8 from the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center
  • It is very casual and comes highly recommended by the hotel desk. Entrees are $8-$15. They have a wide menu: They have breakfast all-days, salads, burgers, steaks, echilladas, pies, that sort of place.

See you there! Johntex\talk 01:29, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

Re:VFA

[edit]

The answer to the general question posed to you have led me to the conclusion that you are unqualified for administrator privileges. Good/Popular editors do not equal qualified admin candidates. --Boothy443 | comhrá 04:41, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

400 project space edits to me meand nothing, for all i know thats 400 votes for deletion or similar system, whcih for me mans nothing condiserng that i belive the system is broke. Revernting vandals and inpropate changes is something that anyone can do, so why do you need admin privdleges to do that, so you can do it faster, not reson enough. I have done more then my fair share of vandalism reversion, so i guess i should be an admin. A person that is a good editor is not allways a person that is a good admin, and this has happend more times that you which to belive or have been led to belive, but they is no effective process to remove an admin, matter of fact i dont think i have ever seen it happen. And you dont seem to take the position seriously, if it such a "no big deal" then we should not need admins at all, but being that you are going to get a broad range of powers to enofce policies as you interpert them as you see fit, compared to a regular user, with basicaly no oversite or regulation, thats a "big deal". You give no reason to vote for you, if you have policy questions then you should use your admin abilites to work on them and let users know where you satand, and where you think changes to be made. But in the end it does not matter RFA is nothing nore then a poupularty contest, only thing you need it enoughg of your "friends" or "supporters" to vote for and your in, it is basicaly automatic now anyway. --Boothy443 | comhrá 21:42, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
I see that you are giving reasons now. That makes things a lot better. You should still provide a link or something next to your votes for your reason for disliking most admins. Thank you.Voice of All @|Esperanza|E M 02:34, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

Boothy

In response to your question on my talk page: no, I never got any sort of explanation from Boothy as to his vote against me, or any response about why he posts so many negative votes without comment. But it doesn't really matter, because I've been told that the vote-counters pretty much ignore him, and don't give any weight to his votes. And I see here that he's replied to you here, which is as good a thing as it is surprising. :) - Brian Kendig 01:47, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

Hello Johntex!

[edit]

My name is Jonathan. Just wanted to say "hello" as I'll probably bump into you from time to time on Texas pages in general and particularly those related to The University. I've seen quite a bit of your work, and it is greatly appreciated by me! On that note, if you have any input at Texas Student Media (I've created a stub there), please take a look.

Oh, and I hope you get your adminship! Hook 'em! That's enough exclamation points for now. jareha 22:38, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

'Scuse me for butting in. "Texas Student Media?" Bleh! I suppose, then, that it's now the "TSM Board?" · Katefan0(scribble) 23:07, 25 October 2005 (UTC) (a former basement-dweller)
Although I do appreciate your sentiment, and agreed with you on the renamaing of the Red River Shootout (which it will always be to me), Texas Student Media is more inclusive to all the media properties held by the previously named Texas Student Publications. jareha 23:20, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
<Chuckle> Hey Kate, I think he may have you there with some good logic, though TSP does roll off the tounge a little better, IMO. </Chuckle>
Jonathan, thanks very much for dropping by with your kind words, for your support of my nomination for adminship, and of course most of all for your contributions to the the 'pedia. I'll definitely wander over to the TSM article and see if there is anything I can add, and I look forward to seeing you around all our favorite articles. Hook 'em, Johntex\talk 23:37, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
Mmmmm, I suppose! No really, I do see the point. Though honestly, the TS? Board induces a natural gag reflex deep in my soul, so I would've "bleh"ed about any sort of renaming ;) · Katefan0(scribble) 23:53, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

Congratulations, John!

[edit]

Allow me to be the first to congratulate you for your well deserved new position as an admin. It's been a pleasure to be your nominator, and I know you'll continue to do great things here. Sysop

[edit]

It's my pleasure to notify you that, consensus being reached, you're now a administrator. You may wish to read the reading list and how-to guide at your convenience. Most sysop actions are reversible, the exceptions being history merges and deleting pages (but it's a good idea to be careful with all of them). Again, congrats on becoming an admin. -- Pakaran 19:22, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Thank you very much for the notification. I greatly appreciate the confidence the community is placing in me, and I will do my best to live up to this responsibility. Johntex\talk 19:33, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
You're very welcome. Honestly, though, you shouldn't be thanking me - being a bureaucrat is easy. I just close the votes, and do what the voters tell me to do. It's pretty easy not to mess up as a sysop, really, just use common sense and don't use sysop powers in disputes you're involved in unless you're sure it's the right thing to do. And, if you aren't sure, you can always ask on WP:AN or other appropriate places :). -- Pakaran 19:35, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
Congratulations! Rock on with your bad self. · Katefan0(scribble) 19:37, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Congrats on your well-deserved promotion. Oran e (t) (c) (@) 19:45, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

On a personal note, I replied to you at Talk:Order of the Arrow. I'm still not entirely certain what content should be on that page, and it's something I've been debating for over a year. Pakaran 20:10, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Why'd you identify me?

[edit]

I don't understand why you need me to identify me to the wikipedia community when I ask a question. If you sent me a personal message, that would have been okay. But you bothered to mention me at the Help Desk. I don't know why you did that, but I like my privacy. Don't do something like that again. I'm okay with the four tildes; I choose not to use them at times.this was from Screwball23, who chose not to sign

Hello Screwball, thanks for your question. I actually did not add your name to the Help page. Someone else did that. You can click the History tab of the Help page if you want to figure out who it was. As for why they did it, it is customary for all users to sign all Talk page posts with the tildes. If they forget, or choose not to do so, it is pretty common for someone to come along and add it in for them. If you scan over the rest of the Help page, you will probably see other examples. You will also notice that another user even went to the trouble to check your contributions and figure out what article it is you were probably asking about. Wikipedia keeps everything in its history so there is no way to leave a comment and not have it be associated with you. Happy editing, Johntex\talk 22:52, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
By the way, if you are Christopher X. Brodeur then please see WP:VAIN when creating an article about yourself. Thanks, Johntex\talk 23:08, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Irregular deletion of David Swanson

[edit]

I was about to vote delete on that when you deleted it. In all conscience, I don't think it technically qualified as a speedy. You gave "G1 - hoax" as the reason, but G1 "does not include [...] hoaxes [...] unless the material is actually unsalvageably incoherent".

I doubt it'll be controversial this time, but you may want to review the criteria more carefully so as to avoid potential mistakes in the future. ^_^

Haeleth Talk 13:49, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

You are absolutely correct that G1 "does not include [...] hoaxes [...] unless the material is actually unsalvageably incoherent". As you suggested, I have reveiwed the deletion process to see if I may have made a mistake. However, having reviewed the deletion process, I have to disagree with your interpretation that the article may not have been deletable under G1.
I believe that the article was unsalvageably incoherent. The entire text was a single sentence saying David Swanson tapped Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and the Olsen twins. There was no context given for expansion of the article, no source given for the claim, and no context to help anyone try to substantiate the claim. Google gave no relevant hits.
This was not something like Nazi moon base where a hoax has a history or a group of adherents. Continued voting would have been a waste of time. If we were to decide that this page does not meet the hoax criteria under G1, then what would?
I'm certainly willing to consider this discussion, but at this time I firmly believe it was a proper deletion. If I were to encounter a similar situation in the future, I would tag it both G1 hoax and G3 vandalism. Best, Johntex\talk 16:58, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
Well, I mainly wanted to point out that G1-ing hoaxes might be controversial - there's a lot of different opinions as to what counts as unsalvageable. Thanks for explaining your reasoning; based on that I now agree that your decision was justified, so I'll withdraw that "irregular" accusation. — Haeleth Talk 17:45, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. I was happy for the opportunity to explain my reasonaing, and I do welcome the reminder that certain speedies may be controversial. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have concerns about any of my future changes. Happy editing! Johntex\talk 22:07, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry about accidentally reverting your changes to Samuel A. Alito, Jr. -- I was trying to fix 70.30.7.230's vandalism and didn't realize you'd edited the page in the meantime. --David Wahler (talk) 17:31, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

No problem at all - it's the chance we take when editing "current event" articles - some of our changes are going to get stepped on in the fray of trying to revert vandalism, even when we are tryign to fix vandalism ourselves! Keep up the fight! Johntex\talk 17:34, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Quotes in Alito article

[edit]

You have certainly reverted people's attempts to remove that RNC press release from the middle of the Samuel Alito articles more than three times today, so I kindly suggest that you knock it off or at least engage the issue on the talk page. Eliot 19:06, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Multiple people have added the quotes in different forms. Multiple (mostly annonymous) people have deleted them, usually with no summary or replacement. The quotes are completely verififable and from notable persons. There is no reason for them to be seen as POV if they are presented correctly:
  • Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA): “You have obviously had a very distinguished record, and I certainly commend you for long service in the public interest. I think it is a very commendable career and I am sure you will have a successful one as a judge.” [1], speaking on Alito's nomination to the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals.
  • Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ): “I believe Mr. Alito has the experience and the skills to be the kind of judge the public deserves – one who is impartial, thoughtful, and fair. I urge the Senate to confirm his nomination.” [2], speaking on Alito's nomination to the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals.
  • Former Senator Bill Bradley (D-NJ): “The confirmation of Sam Alito as U.S. Attorney for New Jersey is testimony to the commitment he has shown and the success of his efforts as a law enforcement official. I am confident that he will continue to do all he can to uphold the laws of this nation with the kind of determination and vigor that has been his trademark in the past.” [3]
==Notes==
  1. ^ Sen. Ted Kennedy, Committee On The Judiciary, U.S. Senate, Hearing, April 5, 1990
  2. ^ Sen. Frank Lautenberg, Congressional Record, April 27, 1990, p. S5281
  3. ^ Sen. Bill Bradley, Congressional Record, December 8, 1987 p. S17427
They do need to be explained as coming prior to Alito's time on the Circuit Court. This version does not come from anyone's press release. I'll continue the discussion on the Talk page. Johntex\talk 21:17, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Baseball

[edit]

Hello, I stumbled across Wikiproject:major league baseball. I see that it talks about the 2005-2006 season. This seems odd to me since it seems like a season is contained within one calendar year. There is currently no discussion page to the article. The page seems like it was created by a Bot, and you have the most recent edit, so I'm guessing you are the one to ask aobut this. Should it be changed, or is it correct? Johntex\talk 22:27, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

I know nothing about baseball, except what I learned form Peanuts and other American comedy. However I think the article refers to the "standings" i.e. rank which would hold between two seasons. USer:C2 aaron is a real person, a relativly new contributor, I'm not sure why this is a wikiproject: I've sort of asked him. Rich Farmbrough 23:15, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the recognition. I'm not sure if the sentence is even necessary in the article. I don't care which way it goes; I just added one to the number because I figured no one had already, being that rankings weren't announced last time the page was edited. I think 8 or 9 is fine. Maybe we could change the language to say 8 or 9 weeks (whichever is right) since that is how the poll measures itself. Let me know, or just make the change yourself. Thanks again! -Scm83x 01:35, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

I went ahead and changed the sentence to refer to the "tenth week of polling". Again, let me know if you don't agree. -Scm83x 01:40, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

Anonymous user changed Mack Brown and I'm not sure if I agree. Take a look. -Scm83x 04:33, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your support of the inclusion of the word "minor". I've put a lot of effort in regarding that and it's gratifying to see I am getting some agreement. Rex071404 216.153.214.94

A few concerns about Wikipedia

[edit]

I was happy to know that the community recognizes the new guys like me. Unfortunately, I'm still at odds at knowing everything about Wikipedia. My signature for example was all designed and created by other wikipedians who told me how to make it. That is why I simply couldn't alter it very quickly. Is there a way to learn this? What code is it?

Secondly, I am interested in being an administrator. My writing is good and I feel I could revise articles very well. I also enjoy helping people out at the Reference Desk. What do I need to become an administrator?

Also, I remember a person at the Science Reference desk had a very personal question about their brain and their thoughts. I wrote a comment and now I cannot find that article anywhere. It was called "Psychoative Drugs" and was at the Science Reference Desk. Maybe you can find it.

Lastly, I want to know exactly where wikipedia has room for debate, not only political but on an array of issues. What I see on the help desk is very much like a blog-ring with comments and fights, often attacking each others' character. Is there any more of this? Do you have moderated debates and forums anywhere on wikipedia? Thank you very much. I'm glad to be part of the team.--Screwball23 talk 01:49, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

3rr

[edit]

Thanks for the head's up, It does look like that edit on 11.03.05 could be read to be a revert. I need to be very cautious in my counts so as not to transgress. Rex071404 216.153.214.94 23:37, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

3rr again

[edit]

You know what Golbez is trying to do. He wants me edit this article again, and he will ban me. I notice that he reverts other people's work, and then they write back and say how wonderful he is for doing it. Well, I am different. I think there are too many destroyers and not enough creators around. Wallie 07:22, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the help on Austin, Texas

[edit]

Thanks for the quick fix concerning Leslie Cochran's gender. I really didn't intend to get into an edit war over it, and probably would have taken it to the talk page, but I thank you for avoiding that all together. I just hope the editor doesn't try to get into an argument about it on Leslie's page. EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 18:45, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

That darn merge

[edit]

Hey, Johntex. I've got a long-standing merge that needs admin attention, and you were kind enough to say on the Help desk that if it hadn't been handled by this weekend that you would try to take care of it. The article is Lengths of science fiction series/temp, which has an edit history that (I had been told) should be merged with that of Lengths of science fiction series.

As you suggested, I put a notice at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#Merge request, and Violetriga suggested that it might be better to move it to a subarticle of the talk page and blank it. But it needs an admin to do that as well, so whatever is the best course of action has to be done by an admin. If you're up for it, I'd be grateful if you can take care of it. Thanks! —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 01:31, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

Wednesday, or whenever, is fine. There's no real urgency about this, it's just a loose thread that I keep wanting to pull. Thanks. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 01:46, 7 November 2005 (UTC)
Hey, Johntex. I had forgotten about this merge, and I suspect you had as well. It's no biggie, but it'd be great if the darn thing were gone. (The article, Lengths of science fiction series, is fine — it's just the history that apparently needs to be merged with that of the temp page.) If you don't have time to deal with it, I'll just ask another admin. Thanks! —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 01:59, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

Rangerdude

[edit]

There is an active arbitration case concerning user:Rangerdude at Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Rangerdude/Evidence. I have presented evidence of Rangerdude's attacks about other editors, and I included a negative personal comment he made to you. The ArbCom is seeking greater involvement in their cases. -Willmcw 07:23, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

Your input urgently needed there. Rex071404(all logic is premise based) 22:58, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

Actually it isn't after a few hours of voting. This has been going on for weeks. He stretched an argument out over one word for longer than most WP articles run to. The vote was to try to get it through to him what everyone has been telling him ad nausaum: he is in a minority of one, and the overwhelming consensus is against him. When he went back on a consensus painfully achieved which he signed up to that was the last straw for everyone. The vote was to try to get through to him that the discussion was over and that we weren't going to go into another month of arguments when it was him against everyone else. The case closed message is an attempt to try to get that message through to him, since all else has failed. If it fails then he will be brought before the arbcom over his conduct. He already has been banned from that page for his conduct. He is back to his old standard of pricking around, agreeing things, backing out of things he agreed, raising issues decided weeks ago, then going back over everything again. Either he stops or it is left to the arbcom to stop him. But people on that page are not putting with any more of his assing around. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 01:50, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

Template:User longhorn

[edit]

I didn't see this anywhere, so I went ahead and created it: Template:User longhorn. For use as you see fit. Do you know how to make it so that any page with that template is automatically added to a category? If so, do you think that would be appropriate? Something like "Longhorn Wikipedians" perhaps? Sorry for the rambling nature of the note; it's late! -Scm83x 09:55, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

Does anyone learn at UT?

[edit]

I posted a comment to the University of Texas at Austin page concerning the lack of an academics section on the page. I would appreciate comments. Thanks. -Scm83x 08:51, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Hey Johntex. I've noticed that you've made a lot of great contributions to the UT article in the past, and thought you might be interested to know that I started the peer review process. Scm83x and I just went over the article with a fine-tooth comb, and are waiting to see the results. We are looking forward to your contributions. Thanks. -Rebelguys2 12:33, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

Image galleries

[edit]

You have in the past commented on Image Galleries nominated for deletion. Most galleries are nominated because the nominators feels that galleries violate WP:NOT. The William-Adolphe Bouguereau gallery has been nominated for deletion (here). A proposal to modify WP:NOT is here. Please join either or both conversations and comment as you see fit.
