This is a list of the full names of people and fictional characters whose first name is not generally used when referring to them, and consequently is not common knowledge.

When considering if a person is more commonly known by their full name or a common name, some consideration should be made of the number of times each name is used in published sources. The same standards that are currently used for redirects can also be applied. If Thomas Sean Connery redirects to Sean Connery, this can be taken as community consensus that "Sean Connery" is, in fact, the more commonly known name.

Individuals which meet one of these criteria should be members of this list:

  • Primarily known solely by their surname (Marcus Tullius Cicero -> Cicero)
  • Do not use their first name at all (Thomas Sean Connery -> Sean Connery), or only use the first initial
    (Lafayette Ronald Hubbard -> L. Ron Hubbard)
  • Full name is not commonly known internationally, even if it is known in some countries or communities
    (Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi -> Mahatma Gandhi)
  • Known by a common name which includes a nickname, but also includes part of their full name
    (Earvin Johnson -> Magic Johnson, Thomas Edward Lawrence -> Lawrence of Arabia)


Special care should be taken to avoid including individuals which fall into these categories:

  • Known by shorter versions of their first names (William Jefferson Clinton -> Bill Clinton)
