Removal of link

Hello, this is Ikanweb. I've got your message about the removal of our entry in the tools chapter of the Extract, transform, load article. I agree that your action is valid, since all companies were using the article for advertisement. I much appreciate your thoroughly cleaning of all the listed companies. Often contributers would remove a new link because it is invalid yet they do not remove the older existing -allthough also invalid- links.

History of Seismology deletion

I just put in about 4 or more hours putting the seismology history section together. So I'm a bit sad to see all my effort gone to naught. I understand the copyright issue (I probably wasn't sensitive enough to it) but I didn't "just copy and past" a slab from another source. I put quite some effort into selecting key historical developments (out of a much larger sample) and I didn't use only one source and I did do a bit of customising of the wording. Quite a bit of what I was doing was linking scattered material already on Wikipedia so that the reader could get an historical overview. Why did I do it? Because I needed an historical overview of seismology and I couldn't find it on Wikipedia.

Is there anyone lurking out there in Wikipedia land who could take what I've done and work it over to get rid of the copyright problems?

Hi, Yes there are a number of editors that are working within Wikipedia:WikiProject Earthquakes and Wikipedia:WikiProject Geology these days. I'm working on far too many articles at the moment to be of any immediate help, but monitoring my watchlist is a continual activity and copyright issues are one thing that needs watching for. Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that the whole kit and caboodle was copied, but since there was at least one whole sentence copied word for word, the easiest and most sure way to resolve the issue was to remove the new addition altogether. It does take quite a bit of work to paraphrase sources to capture what's being said without duplicating text. I do quite a bit of that and so I'm in tune when I see large amounts of text inserted into the articles.

I would say go through your material, especially your sources, and double-check to make absolutely sure that there are no verbatim sentences or even what we call "close paraphrasing" (a portion of a sentence, or even a short string of words). Then re-add it, making sure to attribute each paragraph with a reliable source. It will be a lot of work, but it will be worth it. Dawnseeker2000 18:51, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Radiant Barrier

Im having trouble understanding where your information regarding savings comes from. Mine comes from expertise in the industry, customer satisfaction surveys, etc. the savings should actually be listed in percentages; dollar amounts are extremely inaccurate as there are extreme variants in energy costs not only from region to region but within different counties as well. Customers in the deep south generally save in excess of 20% as a rule of thumb; 12 to 16% in colder climes. Also, traditional radiant barrier foil products work better with "moister" heat. Using your current methodology is not at all accurate and is extremely confusing; I did my best to help by using average bills in the areas listed multiplied by the average savings percentages

LCD matrix display

Hi Dawnseeker2000, thank you for your statement. I did the change because the 'D' in 'LCD' stands already for 'display', so the term 'LCD-display' says 'Liquid crystal display display'. Blue And Dead - BAD TLA for Blue Screen of Death

BAD was/is (though BAD's are not so common an occurrence with current Windows OS's) a popular euphemism for "Blue and Dead". The colloquial vernacular was part of the computing culture's lexicon, particularly in the mid 1990's when WINDOWS was also a well known acronym for Will Install Needless Data Over Whole System. (MacIntosh - Most Ap's Crash If Not The System Hangs) Cries of anguish were accompanied by "The system is BAD, again!" when Windows hung, particularly in software development programming environments.

Similar to saying "oops" in a medical surgery theatre, management did not want end users and potential customers hearing that! (Microsoft wasn't so thrilled either and tried discouraging it's use, obviously, when they heard the acronym during a tour of one of the computing labs, but use of "BAD" persisted.) BAD as an acronym for "Blue and Dead" was just too "juicy" and used in several environments (campus computing labs, Bell Labs/Nortel) though only anecdotally, as the term is only informally resident in emails of the time.

Citing a condition of human artifact is not possible with such an informal term as BAD. Formal correspondence does not use such common colloquial vernacular. The recording of the use of the BAD acronym is again informally done here in this note but this is inadequate for use as a citation. Colleagues of the time recall BAD's use but short of petitioning and getting signed affidavits to establish the veracity of the above, too much time has now been wasted on this historical nuance.

re: Computer science

1. These links should never have been removed in the first place as the editor who did the "migration" did not bother to check if all links where in fact on Wikidata. Did you verify that all the links are present at least somewhere on Wikidata?
2. The current entries on Wikidata are a total mess. This has not been the choice of any local wiki, but action of a single editor on Wikidata. For example, the German article de:Informatik still links to en:Computer science locally, but not on Wikidata.

Until these issues have been resolved the links should just be left locally. Without the local links there is not even an easy way too see the links have been migrated in way that is either controversial or even plain wrong. Please restore them. —Ruud 15:25, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately checking only some of the links in not enough, as it often turns out a few to smaller wiki are missing on Wikidata. They need to be checked rigorously. In my opinion the easiest way is to leave the links in the article and then let the bots remove the ones already on Wikidata and migrate the ones that are still missing. Those that will left are in conflict and can then be checked manually. If you insist on doing all of this by hand then I won't stop you.

Both d:Q4027615 and d:Q21198 have been created by d:User:Sanyi4. He seems to have put any links starting with an "I" under Informatics and the rest under Computer science. This is wrong as many (but not all) of the links now under Informatics on Wikidata link back to en:Computer science locally. One interesting case concerns fr:Informatique, where local consensus was that the interwiki should be changed from en:Computer science to en:Computing and eventually a new article on computer science started under fr:Informatique fondamentale. On Wikidata fr:Informatique is suddenly linked to Informatics. —Ruud 17:50, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Please don't bite the newbies

Hi!

Recently you made two edits to JWST that were perfectly correct in a purely technical sense. You removed a statement without a reference, then removed it again since (in your opinion) it does not have enough long term impact. If this was done by an established, or even registered, editor I'd have no problem at all with this. But for an edit made by an IP, it certainly goes against Wikipedia:Please do not bite the newcomers.

Here is an IP who is not a troll, not a vandal, and added factually and grammatically correct information which might be interesting to a number of people (in particular, those who visit Wikipedia since they see the model at SXSW). Almost surely, he (or she) had the reference available, but did not put it in since they did not know how. As for notability, any established editor knows that if another editor removes something as un-notable, the usual response is to go to the talk page and argue it out there. An IP editor often does not know this, so it's worth adding a "please discuss on talk page" to an edit summary for such a deletion. We need new editors, and having correct stuff deleted twice is not a welcoming experience.

Furthermore, I'd argue it *is* notable enough, for what it shows about JWST outreach efforts, if not just for the 3 day exhibit. It's covered by reliable sources: Story in the LA Times]. I'll add it again, and if in your opinion it's still not OK, please suggest a visit to the talk page to discuss in your edit summary. I'll start the entry on the talk page to make it easier for the IP if he or she wishes to respond. Maybe we can get a new editor involved, LouScheffer (talk) 13:43, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

2008 Slyudyanka earthquake

Hello! You've recently removed my edit about the 2008 Slyudyanka earthquake. You've just written me I had added the wrong information. But the earthquake really occurred at 27 Aug. 2008 in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia. There is aт article in Russian Wikipedia about it - ru:Землетрясение на Байкале (2008). The earthquake isn't famous because there were no any victims, but, nevertheless, some buildings were demolished. Moreover, I personally felt it, because I was being that moment in Slyudyanka. There are the sources in the Russian article which approve the magnitude. There're no an English article about the earthquake, but I include the link in the template because I want somebody to create it. • I removed the speedy because while the subject looks to be decidedly non-notable, it did have context. A1 is reserved more for things along the lines of "adfadsf" or "That guy likes cheese". It's a short article but it does identify the subject and tell you what it's about, so it falls just short of what A1 would cover. I don't know why you always see the USGS state; in the section of "Earthquakes in 2013", the rules take the EMSC results; and you don't like the EMSC results. Deletion of a contribution

I am really surprised of what has happened. I tried to contribute to a page "Lean Six Sigma" which contained this message

"This article does not cite any references or sources. Please help improve this article by adding inline citations to reliable sources."

I tried to contribute adding a reference to a text on the subject published by a primary UK publisher: Gower Press.

Yes, it is true the book I referenced was written by me, but: 1. it was in response to a add a reference; 2. it is a primary text on the subject

Deletion of a reference

Lean thinking was developed in the '40 of last century. Six Sigma was developed in the '80 of last century. There are certainly dated books on Lean Six Sigma, but it would not be beneficial to the users of Wikipedia (in order to answer to Wikipedia request for a reference) to cite a book of the '80s in last century. My books was published in October 2012. There must be some reasons why it was published by a British publisher. The reason is very simple is that it is a modern view of the subject. Yes there are other outdated books on the subject. The Wikipedia user can read them on the 10 pages reference list in the book I tried to reference. Anyway, I believe that it is debatable to leave the item without any reference. I will not suggest an outdated reference. It is against my principles. Bnicoletti (talk) 21:00, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Celestron

Hello Dawnseeker2000.

You reversed one of my edits and asked me to cite a source or discuss. I will do the latter, although a simple Google search will turn up many "sources". The focal length of a C8 Celestron telescope is 2032mm OR 203.2cm. The current article mentions the C8 as having an 8" aperture and a focal ratio of f/10. Eight inches converted to mm is 8" x 25.4mm/inch = 203.2mm. To calculate the focal length, multiply the aperture times the focal ratio, i.e., 203.2mm x 10 = 2032mm.

FWIW, I own such a telescope and can confirm that a telescope of this size has 10x the magnification of a 200mm camera lens, which is considered a medium focal length objective.

But this is rudimentary. I do not understand how you would ask me to cite a "source" when you change something back without yourself citing a source.

P&ID link removal

Dawnseeker2000 I appreciate the notification of the link removal. The link adds to the article in a material way because it is a free resource to students (primarily upper division ChemE students) who are the most likely audience for this page. Pages about diagramming are especially well served by external resources because it gives context to the article and gives the reader an actionable next step in the most likely of use cases that they are actually going to be making a diagram of their own. Lucidchart is a good candidate to be this resource because it is free for students and is web-based so it will work for the widest possible audience.

Megathrust Earthquakes

Hello Dawnseeker2000:

You had said you had deleted something I wrote in the Megathrust article due to lack of citations and that you thought it was incorrect. I don't recall exactly what I wrote so if you could refresh my memory I would appreciate it. I do recall, however, that one thing I said was that in Southern California, the term "the big one" refers to a large Earthquake along the San Andreas. In that instance, I'm not sure you will find a more sound citation than straight from the mouth of a native Southern Californian, and that I am.

Repeat vandalism

I added a semi-protection request, I track the article for more than a 1 year and I think there is sufficient concern for a semi-protection. Unregistered users rarely do other thing than vandalize. Vandalism: Hudsons Bay High School

I do not understand why you keep revising my post about the notable teachers, as well as the section about Mrs. Morrison. Why do you keep referring to it as vandalism. Everything there is factual. In fact, the quote about a student talking about Mrs Morrison IS ME!! It is quite aggravating as she was a very beloved teacher, and some other student are becoming stressed at the removal of said section. If you could please refrain from deleting it, that would be great as I see you having no right to do so at this point. Provide evidence that you were a Hudsons Bay student, and/or a student of gordon patterson or candice morrison, because if not, then you truly have 0 right to delete that section. All info must be from a credible source, and if you are in fact no an alumni and/or a student of either teacher, that makes you an non-credible source of information, at least regarding that section. My edit to the page "School Violence" was reverted. However, if you look at what I edited, you'll see it was a very immature and incorrectly written message about guns and other weapons in schools. I staunchly believe this should be removed, as it does not fit the mature tone intended to be used on Wikipedia. Port Dover Sailor Edits and Warning

Good Day Dawnseeker: Yes, I am new to the Wikipedia editing scene, the main reason I created an account was to help our fans find our "new" website and update old outdated information about our hockey club. Whenever anyone goes to Goggle and types in "port dover sailors" the site I'm attempting to edit is the first on the Google list. Almost all the information on the right hand page is incorrect, and thus another reason I was attempting to edit. I see our link at the bottom of the page being referred to as the "Sailors Webpage". Even if all we were able to do was to post this at the top of the page, or something like "Scroll to bottom of page for Webpage link" would be outstanding and allow our fans easy access to our hockey club. Allow me first to introduce myself. I am ONE DROP's Contents and Publications advisor. Yesterday, I attempted to edit the ONE DROP Wikipedia page. (Now, I'm afraid I'm not very "Wikipedia literate" so you'll have to bear with me!) I was evidently not successfull in doing so. This morning, I was told that you had refused my edits, considering them to be too drastic. And I agree, they were. Here's why: ONE DROP has recently repositioned itself quite drastically.
