Hi,

I have fixed all I can find. Can you please check again to see if any other invalid ISBN in the article. Thanks, — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 15:03, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

This one I think is wrong becasue the check digit doesn't match ISBN 81-7033-526-9 Parameter error in {{ISBN}}: checksum. Rich Farmbrough 15:09 23 August 2006 (GMT).

Well, friends, this is it...

I'll be moving to Connecticut tomorrow along with my family. I'll be leaving Wikipedia for a while until everything gets set up at our new home. It all depends on my Internet access, but I'll be seeing you in a week or two. Bye! --Slgr@ndson (page - messages - contribs) 01:58, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Your comment on the candidature of the article "Thiruvananthapuram" for selected article : "Unwilling Object. The article is of fine quality, but completely lacks internal references. "

But, I found internal references in the article. Can you please clarify in that ?

Thank you very much for the clarification. I will add the inline references.

Hello Ambuj,

Please look at the article of Thiruvananthapuram now. Change your comments in the page Portal:India/Selected_article_candidates/Thiruvananthapuram, if the article is satisfying the norms.

Pie chart

Congrats on getting the IIT article on the main page. As for the pie charts, I'm really busy so wont have time to update the graph. Instead I'll give you the info on how to update them when necessary.

  1. Convert percentages to degrees (100% = 360°)
  2. Draw sectors (arcs) which have the respective internal angles. [If you are unsure, just check the tutorials that come with inkscape]
  3. [if necessary, clone the sectors and change the angles for newer units] This ensures that the radius remains the same.
  4. Align the centres at a single point.

Your AFD

There seems to be some problem (technical, not ethical !!!) regarding your AFD of few IIT hostels. For example in this page the link for this article's entry takes me to the Vindhayacal and not Aravali House Please check and correct me if I am wrong Doctor Bruno 18:35, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

India Selected Articles

Hi Ambuj. Are the criteria for SAC the same as in FAC (WIASA reads like WIAFA)? I am thinking of commenting on these articles. Should I scrutinize them as carefully as if I would an FAC? - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 18:45, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Ok. I will be more regular now. I plan to check references and facts and a bit of copyediting too. Adding SACs and SPCs to the Indian template was a good idea. With time more people (like me) should start commenting on SACs. - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 19:01, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Re:IIT Kharagpur

Hi Ambuj - here are the points which IMO you need to fix:

  1. The length, 49kb is too long - one has to look at the subject matter in judging an article's length. Articles like World War II may reasonable go into 80kb, and this article should not really exceed 40kb. I honestly don't think 53 citations are necessary, especially as the information is not that diverse or controversial.
  2. Copyedit the entire article by applying the points raised by Spangineer in the FAC of the IITs. Also, refer to Tony's manual and copyediting guide.
  3. No red links.
  4. Are there any IIT Kharagpur publications, student magazines? They will be good sources for local, specific info. In the section and subsections of "Student life and culture," I'd like to know about notable winners, what kind of projects and events were organised. Did these attract acclaim or recognition? How do IIT Kharagpur students go about doing such projects - what facilities, support, resources do they get?
  5. "Funding" and "Policies" should be moved from "Academics" to "Organisation (drop the structure)." Also incorporate data about funding support from alumni and private groups into "Funding." In "Policies," I'd like to know of what specific policies and decisions made for Kharagpur - right now the section talks only of stuff the IITs deal with in general.
  6. Reservations - I'd really like to know how IIT-K students feel and behave over the reservations policy. Not really their opinions, but are their student/administrative issues? Any notable conflicts or problems? Are there groups of students who resent others over this? Where do the faculty, administration stand and how do they behave? I know this is difficult, but I'm sure you can manage at least a couple of sentences about this angle.
  7. Sponsored research I'd like to know what kind of work do IIT students actually get to do (generally speaking). Is it like carrying papers and making coffee for seniors, or doing something important and audacious. If there are specific notable examples, that would be great but again, just general information.
  8. Research what kind of research projects are done? Any notable achievements, patents?
  9. How does the student community behave, participate in local life? Any particular interactions?
  10. Balance of study and other stuff how much priority does faculty AND students give to non-study stuff?

In accordance with my concern over the length, I'm not asking for or expecting much more data - again, I'm only trying to push you a bit more into IIT-K specific stuff. I definitely feel there is no need for so many citations. If you find yourself doing a balancing act, then choose in favor of IIT-K specific info and remove some of the repetitive stuff. Basically these are a few venues in which you can prolly try to write a para or 2. Baaki, I think this article will be ready for FAC once you finish copyediting on Spangineer and Tony's guidelines. I will help you in that. Should be ready by the weekend. Rama's arrow 16:27, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Specific info from the IIT-K website would be a great source. Rama's arrow 16:30, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
Another important point - the size can be reduced by removing data that is duplicate of the IITs article. You can easily and acceptably defer the clarification of many points to that main article. Rama's arrow 16:35, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
Its important to obtain Sundar's review before you move for FAC. Also Shreshth and Akash are good reviewers. Rama's arrow 16:37, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
Point 2 I think you can clean out as many as 15-20 citations. You can also shorten the History section. Points 4, 8 I think its fair to use the IIT publications as sources. Just as you mention the achievements of IIT-K alumni, I'd like to read about some notable achievements of IIT students. About the different events, I'd like a sentence or two talking about how students go about organising it, how much time/importance they give to it. Have there been notable events, achievements that won acclaim from media or scholastic authorities? Not inter-hall events, but overall any winners or special projects that are "notable" like the work of Nitin Saxena. Any notable patents is a good idea - don't have to list a bunch of patents and projects, but talk about the different research projects as "in energy, software, biomechanics" etc.
Point 7 the explanation you have given to me is exactly the para that should go into the article! Again, I'm not asking for specifics such that you have to go dept-to-dept. But I'm sure you can mention that IIT students have worked for so-and-so companies, industries... Basically so the reader can understand what you mean by "Sponsored research, industrial consultancy." You need to explain that, cite examples. Tell the reader about the work with DRDO, of how "IIT students are given responsibility to come up with designs, process, solutions," whatever. Q on India portal

Hi Ambuj - for long time I've been unable to understand why there is a "Selected article" nomination, approval process for India portal. Why was this created, and why is it consideed necessary?

I just don't see the call for such an elaborate process that attracts no particular attention and is largely a duplicate of the FAC process and criteria. To me, it appears like a waste of time - any article of substantial content and good length, with no outstanding content/POV disputes should be selected for display. Any good-looking pic with proper source, license should be displayed. The same articles and pictures have been rotated over and over again. It is also consuming the time of editors like you and Akash, which could be easily spent elsewhere. Rama's arrow 15:35, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Actually I'd see a smooth way of running the portal just through discussion on talkpage - "gentlemen's agreements" and cordiality. If I ask you to display Darjeeling for tomorrow even if you've decided on Ahmedabad, you can just display Darjeeling for the next day. To reduce the standards, use WP:GA.
The rationale for the FAC and WP:TFA process is that it represents all of Wikipedia - thus precise standards, discipline and a "FA director" is necessary. I don't see the need to duplicate this process for portals - if India portal goes through this, then every featured portal might have to be put up like this. With WP:GA and WP:FA, I see this as a waste of time and effort. The need is for more FAs, not more processes. Anyway, this is just my feeling. Rama's arrow 12:08, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

IIT-K revision

Yo - I've taken a few liberties in copyediting, removing citations and shaving off the size. In all, I've tried to remove "unnecessary" material and citations, correct grammar and format issues and reduce the size, which has dropped by 7kb. Please check my revisions to make sure that I've not erred. Rama's arrow 23:02, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Deans, degrees, departments, committees are commonplace entities. Only something particular unique, or a brand name like IIT itself should be uppercase. In all articles, the words president, prime minister, ministers, etc. are lower case. I'm not 100% on this, but I don't think they should be upper case. Rama's arrow 14:29, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
I've finished copyediting the article. For my 2 cents, I think its ready. The tricky part is to weed out redudant word usage - for example "The Commerce department is the department imparting commerce education." But there are very few such instances, so I don't think you have much to worry about over grammar. I'm still a learning copyeditor, but it looks good to me. Unless u, Akash or Sundar find anything else, I think the relevant criticism will only come from FAC. Rama's arrow 14:34, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
No I don't think so, u see something like "Main Building" might be the official name of the structure, but its still common to most other complexes to have a main building, just like there is a main office. Words like "main office" are not upper case. Similarly, hall committees are just committees of particular halls. Its a commonplace term. Rama's arrow 14:37, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
Another example - The IIT Council is a distinct entity, but hall committees exist in all IITs and other colleges as well. Rama's arrow 14:40, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
2 points - I think there should be stubs on the IIT Council and Institutes of National Importance - you mention the latter word many times in IITs, so I think the GOI definition should be made clear. Rama's arrow 14:43, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
An IIT council stub is necessary - its the governing body of all IITs, so it is notable. Yes go ahead and ask others to clarify on this. I'm going by my gut instinct. Rama's arrow 14:50, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
No, if there is a problem we had better solve it. Since we need Sundar and Akash's inputs, ask them to give input on this. Rama's arrow 14:52, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
I may not get time for that until Monday. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 08:45, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Sidebar redesign final vote!

It's that special, special time! No, grandma's not coming over. No, not time to clean out the fridge. It's sidebar redesign voting time! Yes, the community has narrowed it down to 3 different options, and a vote for the same old original sidebar is a choice one could vote for as well. Voting for multiple options is allowed, and discussion on the whole shebang is right there on the vote page itself.

You're probably getting this message because the sidebar fairy (JoeSmack for now) noticed you commented on the project at some time over on at Wikipedia talk:Village pump (proposals)/Sidebar redesign. Lovely. JoeSmack Talk 06:27, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

RFA

Can we nominate you for adminship for a second time Doctor BrunoTalk 12:30, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi Dr. Bruno,
Thanks for the offer, but as I told Nichalp, I am not considering adminship now. Since this question is coming again and again, I think I should tell the reasons for it.
First of all, my mid-term exams are going on. I will be busy for another week and will have very limited acticity. Secondly, by the end of my first RfA, I took up a challenging academic project in real life that I have to conclude. This project has taken almost 4 hours a day of my time, so my average editing time on Wikipedia is down to 2 hours a day from 6 hours a day. This pattern will remain till the end of September. Also, it would be a bad idea to go for adminship when the things I plan to do after adminship (like work on AfDs, et al) are being hardly done by me now. So I would wait another 2 weeks before accepting the offer. That means I am not considering adminship before mid-october.
Anyways, it was nice to get offer from you too, considering we have known each other for very little time. Regards, — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 12:40, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
