Thanks...

I agree it does seem to be quite an issue. Most of the pages I visited noted the date and place of discovery, included some stats from NASA, and that was it. The real culprit here is User:ClueBot_II, which was given unimpeded ability to mindlessly create these useless pages. Your best course of action would be to create the admin who approved it, but he's left Wiki. You could also contact the bot creator, User:Cobi. He'd be the best person to ask why all these pages are necessary. Remember, be courteous (I can tell you really hate these stubs) and that should get you off on the right foot. I wish I had a better answer, but frankly it'd be impossible to manually sort and delete all of those stubs (I'm sure some of them have merit). avs5221 (talk) 06:03, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

I'll be honest, I don't know the first thing about asteroids or what could entail notability. But what I meant is I suspect, just through the sheer number of them, that at least of a few of them would meet notability standards to have their own page (maybe they have a unique orbit or they were part of a notable experiment, I'm just throwing out ideas). But I could absolutely be wrong. That said, I also doubt the vast majority necessitate their own page just so we can list their values. Does that make sense? avs5221 (talk) 02:14, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Korhonen

Hello, to your question: sorry if my edit summary somehow implied that Korhonen should be moved to Korhonen (surname) -- it should not. What I meant is that I have added (to what is and remains a disambig page) an infobox and one-line description of the surname itself, until someone wants to export and expand that to a full article all about Korhonen (surname) -- because Korhonen would stay as the disambig page. I don't think Korhonen alone could be confused for anything but the surname. If so, why not just set it as a WP:SETINDEX and be done with it? Something like Hernández is a good example. avs5221 (talk) 03:03, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
But Hernández is currently in the same state: it's just a bad disambig page, with only a one-liner about the name itself on top. I think a better example would be Smith, a disambig page linking to Smith (surname) where you have a full article about the surname alone. Or Wang and Wang (surname), etc.
Or, from your POV as a reader: let's imagine that someone expands the data about the surname "Korhonen" into a nice two-page article. If you clicked on Korhonen, either you wanted encyclopedic info about the surname (and then all the disambig stuff is garbage to you, you'd just want a dedicated article), or you were sent there by a bad link (and then all the encyclopedic surname stuff is garbage to you, you'd just want a clean disambig list so as to find the right Korhonen you were reading about).

I'm not so sure. I mean, I'm hardly authoritative on these matters, but I've looked into a load of disambig/surname pages as models so as to improve some Finnish surname pages, and it seems there are 3 levels of structure in use:
  1. When you have a small number of people, not many other topics (like places, organizations, etc.), and only a stub-like one-liner about the surname itself, then you keep it all on a single disambig/surname page like Korhonen.
  2. When the encyclopedic info about the surname has grown enough to be more than a useless stub, then a separate article like Korhonen (surname) can be carved from Korhonen to keep the latter a simple disambig page.
  3. When the disambig page still has an astounding number of people, plus tons of other non-people items to disambiguate, like at Smith, then something like List of people with surname Smith is carved from it because it's too big by itself.
That's what it seems to me (and it also seems logical to wait for something to have demonstrated enough groth before being carved to its own article or list). Right now, Korhonen is barely at stage 1. I think there's no point in exporting its one-liner data to Korhonen (surname) because it's likely to stay a stub forever (due to lack of interest or English-speaking documentation about that name, second most-common Finnish surname that it is) -- only someone who is decided to expand it to at least one page of prose should do so, don't you think? For the same reasons, I don't see much use for List of people with surname Korhonen since that's already the function of the page Korhonen (where there is only a dozen of people, and zero other topics). I mean, if you split the current Korhonen between Korhonen (surname) and List of people with surname Korhonen, then there is nothing left at Korhonen but those two entries -- that not the same than Smith where there is still tons of material after they carved the surname and the list of people from it. 62.147.62.25 (talk) 03:52, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

igloo

Hi, and thanks for your interest in igloo. Before using the program, please read the following information carefully - failure to do so may result in your test access being revoked.

igloo is a JavaScript-powered, browser-based anti-vandalism tool, which means you do not have to download or install anything on your computer and it will work on multiple operating systems. However, it does mean that the performance relies on that of your browser and it may operate more slowly than downloaded programs. You must have either Mozilla Firefox 3+ or Google Chrome to use igloo, as it is currently incompatible with other browsers.

igloo relies on a system called iglooNet to assist you in finding and reverting vandalism. It is this system that transforms the program from a pretty version of recent changes to an actual anti-vandalism tool. Naturally, this is beyond the power of a client-side program, and igloo will regularly communicate with an external, non-Wikimedia server. Because of things like server logs, and the iglooNet abuse tracker, this may allow your IP address to be attached to your username - something which is otherwise impossible on Wikipedia. If you do not want this to happen, you MUST NOT USE IGLOO.

If you decide that you do want to test igloo, please keep in mind that it not wholly stable, and you may experience problems where it performs an invalid edit, or other unwanted action. If this happens, fix any mistakes you've made, apologise to anyone you've offended, and let me know. I don't take any responsibility for your use of the program - if you aren't willing to fix any errors, don't use it.

igloo is already quite powerful. The following is a simple guide to using the program:

  • The igloo interface is similar to that of other software, including huggle. Recent changes appear on the left, and diffs appear on the right.
  • igloo sorts diffs based on iglooNet data so that edits most likely to be vandalism are displayed first. You can press spacebar to view the top diff, or click on any diff to view it directly.
  • When you find vandalism, press 'Q' or click the revert button to revert the change, and issue a warning to the user. igloo automatically issues the correct warning. It will ignore existing warnings that are more than 5 days old, and restart from the beginning.
  • The iglooNet assertion system tags clean and dirty edits with colour coding - if it suspects an edit is vandalism, it will be flagged as red, and if it believes it to be clean, it will tag it green.
  • At any time, you can re-review diffs you have already seen by pressing backspace or using the icons to move through the diff history.
  • Remember that igloo cannot currently revert to an arbitrary revision in the page history, so be wary when looking at past edits to a page.

If you hate it, and won't be using it again, please let me know why - and I'll remove you from the test whitelist. Yeah, just finished with it. I made note of more sources and trying to actually work that quote into the article. Stand-alone quotes never quite look right, but sometimes it's the only way of including them. I also suggested he might just merge it to the subject's article. It was a one time event that had a much broader sustained impact on his life. I think the consequences of being sent to an interment camp might be better hashed out on the author's page rather than getting lost in a stand-alone article. avs5221 (talk) 20:40, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello. I've just taken a look at your past 500 revisions, which look good in general. I see you are active in AFC; great! It also looks like you are a vandal fighter; we always welcome more. The only things I can suggest at first glance are that you try as much as possible to improve articles instead of just tagging them. It's my own opinion, of course, but I try to follow that philosophy. I'm not saying to find refs or make an article a Good Article, but instead of taking the time to tag for, say, wikification, you can do a quick copyedit yourself. That way, you have saved the time it would have taken to tag, and the article has actually improved. Other than that, try to use edit summaries 100% of the time. Everything else looks good; please feel free to ask questions and I'll do my best to answer. BTW, what criterion did you not meet for admin coaching? You seem experienced to me. Without looking, I was short on edit count and maybe time active? Thank you for taking a look at my revisions! I very much appreciate it. I've added the script/gadget to force a signature, so that problem should be resolved. And as far as editing....I know :( I've done that with a few AfC candidates. I did a lot of work on Judith Miller and Agility Logistics before they passed AfC, and I totally rewrote The Generating Company, a non-AfC article I stumbled across. Sounds good! I'll take a look at the articles mentioned.
Judith Miller (antiques expert) is the Judith I assumed you worked on :). I fixed some things:
  • Needs bold title
  • External links formatted
  • Italicize TV show names, magazines, etc.
  • Ideally, the article should be categorized. WP:HOTCAT is a useful tool for the purpose. I'll categorize it (see very bottom of article)
Other comments:
  • Could use an infobox, in this case {{infobox person}}
  • List is quite long compared to prose; consider mentioning only the notable ones (an option)
  • Nice use of the {{cite}} template :)

You can tell I don't edit articles very often...sigh, something I must improve. Sorry for the wrong link. Funny too, because it was horribly difficult at times finding links for the antiques expert and not the journalist. I think I got so caught up in referencing everything and protecting it from copyvio or WP:BIO, I forgot some of the simpler things. Especially the EL. I'm a little embarrassed by that one :( Thank you for your thoughts on the bibliography. I had no idea how to touch that one. Just looking through what you changed on the page, I think a big problem was I didn't look at the page quite enough after AfC. Things like {{reflist}}, categories, bold title, EL, etc., are things I should have seen. I don't edit a lot, but I should see those mistakes. Please don't be too hard on yourself :). Looks like you've only actively edited for 2-3 months; it took me about five to really get used to Wikipedia. {{reflist}} is a preference thing, used on the majority (2/3) of wiki articles because it looks neater and cleaner the <references/> . Possible Vandalism by IP address 79.184.107.214

I was looking at the microsoft office article and I noticed that someone had changed the microsft office template so that when you clicked one of the links it would redirect you to the wikipedia article on spagetti. I went to the template and undid the change. How do I check to make sure no other articles have been changed this way. If you're asking about the specific user, 79.184.107.214, then the best way is to check their contributions and see if any of them were vandalism. If you look at the left side of your window, there's a link to Special pages. Then look for User contributions under 'users and rights'. Input 79.184.107.214 and you can see if his activity was vandalism. Click diff for an easy way to see what changes he made (both of his edits are vandalism). Account Creation Tool: Flagged Users

Hi, I noticed that you reserved a request tagged as "Flagged User needed".

At the moment, you will not be able to create any accounts in this category, as you need to have the account creator permission, which you do not have!

In that particular case, a CheckUser is needed to verify that the account can be created, as there is a rangeblock on the IP the request is from (that's why I didn't create it).

For the time being, you cannot deal with "Flagged User needed" requests.

If you would like to get advice, or ask questions in general about using the tool, please feel free to join other members of the Account Creation team in the IRC channel #wikipedia-en-accounts.

I would like to know what exactly is a relevant source. I know there are tons of descriptions on wiki what a relevant source is I just do not understand why exactly the sources I entered in the Articles for Creation/The Forgotten International aren't relevant in your opinion? Please explain, because all these sources are written by well know international organizations and posted as a public media content. Roadtrip nation interview was broadcasted on TV, aurora forum is an official press release not mentioning the Rotary Club. Please advise. Thank you. Question regarding an article nominated for speedy deletion

Why did you recommend my article "Nic Armstrong & the Thieves" for deletion? This band had been reviewed by National Public Radio on several occasions; futher, I found about 6 or 7 articles on Wikipedia that mention this band and/or its lead singer. The Interpol picture would be covered by copyright, but not owned by Interpol. It would be difficult to determine where the photo came from, so you will have to treat it as unknown copyright. Hello, I was hoping to get some guidance. I tried submitting an article yesterday about a company that was declined by you for not having sources. I followed the format of a couple other software companies hoping it would be correct. As for sources, do I simply need to post references to the information on the companies websites? Or, do I need something more than that? The company is a Canadian corporation and I can provide proof of that, just not sure what needs to be done to get the information up. Thank you! Start off by taking a look at wp:rs for guidelines on reliable sources. In general, you cannot use self-published sources to create an article. Wikipedia requires independent, verifiable, third-party sources. That means news articles, tv reports, books, scholarly journals, etc. Is the company mentioned in the news? Rhode Island Governors Template

Hello, I had been working on a Rhode Island governors template, and noticed you had come up with one for colonial governors. I've wanted a template that includes everyone from Roger Williams to Lincoln Chafee, so have created one. I've taken the liberty of changing out the templates for all the colonial governors, but do not plan to change out any of the state governors unless there is an impetus to do so. I just wanted to make sure the template included every one who is considered governor of Rhode Island, whether colonial or state. Hope this is all OK with you. Hi before I give up in despair I'd like to mention the following there are 38 theatre groups in the Wikipedia category community theatre I didn't look at them all but I looked at a random selection, namely:

Avon Players Footlight Club Georgetown Little Theatre Heller Theatre Lakeshore Players Community Theater San Mateo Community Theatre Shadowland Theatre Venice Theatre Villagers Theatre Walk the Plank (theatre company) Winneshiek Players

All of them are small theatre groups who primarily or solely reference their own websites for information, which is to be expected since no community theatre groups would expect broad internet coverage. The information about the groups would naturally reside within the groups' paper archives. This does not diminish their significance within their city. Titirangi Theatre for example has existed since 1935 and has been referenced in many local history publications and newspaper items which are not online. It must have been accepted that Community Theatre warranted its own category, otherwise the category would not exist. I would be very dismayed to think that the article on Titirangi Theatre was been assessed by different criteria from the other 38 community theatre groups. perhaps you could put this article forward somewhere for discussion? regards Macsnapper Macsnapper (talk) 08:37, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Please don't despair or give up. This is a community project and articles are meant to grow. The point I was trying to convey was that generic links, such as show times, etc. are not enough to establish the notability of the theatre. There are several ways to proceed. You can find additional sources, if available, or you can create the page in the mainspace yourself and see if it is nominated for speedy deletion. It'd be preferable to keep it in articles for creation until sufficient sources are available, otherwise you risk getting the page deleted, which may make it more difficult to add in the future. I know where you're coming from, so don't fret. Remember, try everything you can, such as local newspapers, performing arts associations in the area, etc. Notability should not be a hindrance to creating an article, but rather a measuring stick to ensure you're article has a sufficient foundation upon which to grow. avs5221(t|c) 09:22, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

There are a few problems that I can see. Setting the advertising problem aside for the moment, you first need to address your sources. For instance, this and this are fine articles, but the NYT article only talks to Greenspan and is really more of a generic article about entrepreneurship rather than Make It Work, Inc. The Noozhawk source is much better, in that it speaks about the company, until you consider this quote, taken from the organization notability page: "other works in which the company, corporation, organization, or group talks about itself—whether published by the company, corporation, organization, or group itself, or re-printed by other people." The rest of the sources seem to fit this category, also from WP:ORG: "that extends well beyond routine announcements and makes it possible to write more than a very brief, incomplete stub about an organization."
If you take that all into consideration along with my comments about advertising, the best course of action would be to find more suitable sources. If you can do that, you should be able to find more information that can help attest to the company's notability while filing out an entire article.

My name is Susan Nicholls, I am a recently appointed employee of the National Museum of Australia in Canberra. I've been tasked with increasing community knowledge of Australian history and culture by contributing additions to WP articles and creating new ones about materials in our collection. I've been warned very strictly about not "marketing" the NMA and have no wish to do so!

Having introduced myself, I'd like to thank you for your very prompt response to my proposed article on the Bendigo Pottery. It's true I did get most of the information I included from the NMA webpages about the pottery, but I was mainly seeking review of the content and appropriateness of the article for Wikipedia. I declined an AfC article based on WP:CORP, not A7. The review template makes note of A7, yes, but it also notes corporate notability, under which schools are a subsection. In regards to relevance, it was primarily based on the included sources and content of the article. In my opinion, the school lacks the necessary secondary sources to establish notability and therefore inclusion to Wikipedia. I'm sorry your article keeps getting declined on AfC. Let me see if I can provide some information so you can work to improve your article.
  1. First thing fist, the article needs to be wikified. This means adding: a distinguishable lede, or introductory paragraph; section headings, such as early life, publications, death; and other finer details such as links. These will all visually improve the legibility of the article. Much more in-depth information can be found it the Wikipedia Manual of Style. Make sure to go slowly and not get overwhelmed. Ask an experienced editor for help if you have questions.
  2. You need to add inline citations so editors/readers can verify the article's information (see point 4 for examples of text needing attribution). This can be challenging, so see referencing for beginners for additional help. Quotations always require citations.
  3. Other Manual of Style corrections, such as italics for book titles, punctuation issues, etc. This may be better left to an experienced editor, but now is a great time to learn! Try your best and ask questions.
  4. This is the crux of the issue: reliable sources. As it stands at the moment, you have one source. In most cases, it is inappropriate to cite an entire article using one source. Articles need attribution. Can your article not proceed forward with only one source? Not necessarily, but editors try to improve upon an article as much as possible before moving it out of AfC. But grand claims such as "the man who brought sewing machines and ready-to-wear clothing to England" and "the first to offer disability insurance in the UK" need to be referenced since they are likely to be challenged.

Please understand I'm just an editor; I don't review, nor am I aware of, every article on Wikipedia. A sysop just ran across the article and tagged it as unreferenced, so hopefully someone can clean it up. That said, it is underdeveloped and may be deleted.
Your article is well written, but as I mentioned in my review, it does not have enough sources currently. If it made it to the mainspace, it'd be similarly tagged and likely deleted. Since you submitted it to AfC, I tried to provide feedback so you may correct these deficiencies before placing it in the mainspace. Please don't turn this into a competition or try to compare it other articles. AfC exists to help editors review and expand upon their articles, not diminish their work.
If you can add more sources, I'm sure the article would be fine for inclusion. If you need any help, please let me know.
