Giddings Texas

Greetings, I noticed you recently edited elements to include the 'Notable people' section on the page for Giddings Texas. I have posted the following on the talk page of that article:

Please define how the following people are notable enough for an encylopedic entry. : Kurt Mitschke, Texas Cowboy David Porter (born ca. 1957), the Republican nominee for Texas Railroad Commissioner in the November 2, 2010, general election, is a CPA in Giddings.

How is being a CPA or nominee significantly notable? Also, how many cowboy's are from all areas of Texas? This single fact definitely needs to be expanded upon to be included otherwise such entries open way for an avalanche of inclusions for does the community not consider its police, state trooper, sheriff, fire fighter, ambulance and soldiers as notable? Kargin (talk) 18:05, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

I didn't inlcude the part about the cowboy. I did include David Porter, the Republican nominee for railroad commissioner. He defeated the incumbent Victor Carrillo in the March 2 primary. There is a separate article on Carrillo. Are you saying that he is notable only if he wins the Nov. 2 general election when he has already defeated an incumbent? Billy Hathorn (talk) 21:20, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

BH

I am not disputing that defeating an incumbent is a notable thing but in the annals of history where is the line drawn for a concise reflection of such notable persons? Is it based on the number of lives that will be affected with decisions he may help to make concerning the transportation around Texas? How about the sheer volume of lives that teachers affect in a much more intimate way every day for their lifetime as teachers? I guess the question I really am trying to have answered is what requirements must be met to truly be a 'notable' person in or from a community...Kargin (talk) 00:12, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Please stop removing the alt text from this article, or at least explain why you are doing it. Thank you. 96.52.5.187 (talk) 23:18, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

John Calvin Coolidge, Sr./Hugh Carter

I started an article about John Calvin Coolidge, Sr.. He swore his son Calvin Coolidge in as United States President in 1923. Coolidge is notable in his own right in that he served in both houses of the Vermont General Assembly. You may want to look at the article and the note I added to the talk page. Another article that should be done is that of Hugh Carter President Carter's first cousin; Hugh Carter succeeded Jimmy Carter and served in the Georgia State Senate. Maybe you might be interested in doing that article. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 10:44, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

I started the Hugh Carter article-turn out okay. I worked on the Earl D. Eisenhower article-President Eisenhower's younger brother-he served in the Illinois House of Representatives for 2 years-you may want to take a look at that one-Is there a WP-State Legislatures? Hope you are well-Thank you-RFD (talk) 21:14, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Photographing correctional facilities

Hey Billy! I notice you have traveled around rural Texas.

In addition to the Texas Soil Building, there are some other places that need to be photographed. There is a dearth of photos of correctional facilities (for adults and kids). Now, a few things: 1. Do not enter the grounds of the facilities 2. Do not linger around the grounds of the facilities - It may be best to just photograph the facilities from your vehicle 3. Only get a photograph of the sign stating the name of the facility (the photo can include building around the sign, and the the focus on the sign doesn't matter, but try to make sure the sign is visible in the picture), unless there are other noteworthy buildings within public view

Here are some places that need photos:

Adult facilities:

Juvenile facilities: (Gatesville and Mountain View state schools were converted into adult facilities)

I did not list any facilities in the Houston area since I will try to photograph facilities in Brazoria, Harris, and Fort Bend Counties at some point.

WhisperToMe (talk) 00:49, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

  • Right now, I have a photo of the Crystal City prison. I might be able to take the soil building picture in Temple on Thursday, Aug. 12, if you can give me the address and easy directions again. I plan to photograph in Tyler, Athens, and Corsicana on Thursday. Thanks. Billy Hathorn (talk) 03:26, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
    • Thank you very much :) - Please upload the Crystal City pic if you haven't already, and I thank you in advance for the Temple one.
    • Near Corsicana is the Corsicana Residential Treatment Center at 2000 W. 2nd Avenue • Corsicana, TX 75110 - It is a Texas Youth Commission building
    • The Soil and Water building in Temple is at 4311 South 31st Street, Suite 125, Temple TX 76502
    • All places above will have street addresses posted. Once photos come online I will post short Spanish descriptions on the images on the Commons to assist Spanish-speaking people
    • I am happy to give addresses for all places immediately. If you want the addresses now, please let me know. Or if you want to wait until you come to those areas, that is fine too. Please let me know if you plan to visit any rural areas in the future
    • WhisperToMe (talk) 05:36, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

  • Photo taken: Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board, Temple, TX IMG_0679.JPG

  • Photo taken: Youth treatment facility, Corsicana, TX IMG_0648.JPG

There is no specific sign but the name of three counselors on the outside wall. I have a separate picture of the names of the counselors if you want that too. This picture is at the side of the building. The front of the building is occupied by a financial services company. Somehow, I am not sure that this is what you were expecting from this photo. Billy Hathorn (talk) 14:41, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

  • Do you want me to upload the Crystal City Correctional facility (I have two photos, one with the name. It was impossible to get the name and a view of the facility in the same photo.) under Crystal City? Billy Hathorn (talk) 14:41, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, please upload them :) - Please upload the Crystal City and the counselor name photos. Thank you
Thank you for getting the Soil building!
BTW - Was this where you took the Youth treatment facility, Corsicana, TX IMG_0648.JPG image? - This is the result I got in Google Maps when I entered the address, and this is definately the TYC facility. WhisperToMe (talk) 04:01, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Are you in Dalhart right now? The Dalhart Unit's front entrance sign is a possibility of photographing if you are still there. Anyway, thank you for photographing rural Texas! Many city-based Wikipedians don't travel a lot outside of the city, so more photo coverage goes to cities than to rural areas... WhisperToMe (talk) 16:45, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind note, Kuru, but I have hundreds more awaiting to be downloaded, including Pueblo and Denver, CO, photos. The "bad" pictures are because of the diffusion of sunlight. I have notice too that brown buildings do not photograph as well as light-colored ones. Nice bit of work on that one. Are you from there? If you have some good picture would you mind helping spruce this article up? Union Avenue Historic Commercial District is "my" little project I've been working on trying to get to good article or featured status. disclaimer, I do not own this article and am only donoting it as a personal goal 8-)

No, I have an aunt/uncle in Douglas County and pass through there ever six or seven years. It was so hot the day I took those pictures that I had to cut the stop short. Then I had car trouble in CO Springs. I don't have any more pictures. I hate it when someone "owns" an article. This is definitely done for Texas Tech University and Bryan, TX, among others. Thanks Billy Hathorn (talk) 00:51, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Thats a bummer. I live in Pueblo. I work tight by the riverwalk and within the district that articles about. Hope you come visit again! Hell In A Bucket (talk) 00:55, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Can you retake the picture of the Presbyterian Church; mine cut off too much of the steeple. It is hard to photograph.

Can you re-do City Hall; the shot we have is a little dark and crooked.

Can you find a lighter picture of the steel mill?

Also, the Wells Fargo picture is slightly crooked and would do better from a different angle.

What is the downtown eagle exhibit about? It think it is near the Vail Hotel.

I guess the Wells Fargo one is straight enough. The next time you pass through Walsenburg, there is a house you could photograph where Bob Ford lived for a time. He was the assassin of Jesse James. I have the address somewhere but forgot about that when I passed through the interstate. Billy Hathorn (talk) 01:20, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Unfortunately, your photo was deleted. Could you maybe give some more information there? /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 19:56, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

I thought everything by Charles M. Russell was usable. The photo is in the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, TX. There really needs to be a new federal copyright law to clear up all these questionable regulations. Billy Hathorn (talk) 21:18, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
Well, everything published before 1923. Russell's latest works are probably ok too, but more complicated. Your photo can still be seen here, and it is not "Meat for Wild Men". Do you know its title? /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 21:34, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as Childress County Heritage Museum, but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material. This article appears to be a copy from http://biz.childresstexas.net/childressmuseum/ and http://biz.childresstexas.net/childressmuseum/index.asp?pageid=4, and therefore a copyright violation. The copyrighted text has been or will soon be deleted. While we appreciate contributions, we must require all contributors to understand and comply with our copyright policy. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators are liable to be blocked from editing.

If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under license allowed by Wikipedia, then you should do one of the following:

It may also be necessary for the text be modified to have an encyclopedic tone and to follow Wikipedia article layout. For more information on Wikipedia's policies, see Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

If you would like to begin working on a new version of the article you may do so at this temporary page. Leave a note at Talk:Childress County Heritage Museum saying you have done so and an administrator will move the new article into place once the issue is resolved. Thank you, and please feel welcome to continue contributing to Wikipedia. Happy editing! VernoWhitney (talk) 12:05, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

While the sources are cited and the article is not a word-for-word copy, the article remains a close paraphrase and needs to be rewritten further (preferably from scratch) in order to avoid infringing copyright.
While facts are not copyrightable, creative elements of presentation - including both structure and language - are. The less creative the expression, the looser copyright applies, but even so close paraphrasing becomes a great concern when there are long passages that include fragments of the original and the structure of the original is retained. The essay Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing contains some suggestions for rewriting that may help avoid these issues. The article Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2009-04-13/Dispatches, while about plagiarism rather than copyright concerns, also contains some suggestions for reusing material from sources that may be helpful, beginning under "Avoiding plagiarism". VernoWhitney (talk) 12:05, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
It does not say that these two sites are copyrighted: http://biz.childresstexas.net/childressmuseum/ and http://biz.childresstexas.net/childressmuseum/index.asp?pageid=4,

And there is no infringement anyway, as the material has been rewritten, rearranged, and properly credited. Billy Hathorn (talk) 00:56, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

Furthermore, it appears that the biz site is not listed as copyrighted anyway. Billy Hathorn (talk) 19:52, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

I am sorry, but I don't recall anything about Professor Crane, just Representative Crane. Faculty are sometimes allowed to "moonlight", and others are restricted from doing so. The administrators have their favorites. If you have the source, just add it to the article.Billy Hathorn (talk) 22:32, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
