Welcome to my talk page! Feel free to leave me a message to discuss my actions or tell me about something that you think I might want to know. Please sign and date your entries by inserting ~~~~ at the end.

  • Please place new conversations at the bottom of the page, not at the top.
  • I prefer to keep conversations intact, so if you ask me a question here, I will reply here, unless you indicate otherwise.
  • If I left you a message on your talk page, I have added you to my watchlist, so if you reply there, I will see your response (unless several weeks have passed). One exception to this is if my message was a "semi-automated" edit such as concerning an image deletion, in which case I have not watched your page, as I do far too many of these.

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Removing full protection from Lauren Caitlin Upton

[edit]

Hi After Midnight, hope you're doing well! I recently came across Lauren Caitlin Upton, which you fully protected back in 2007 (with the comment this should also be protected during the AFD), along with the main article while an AFD was underway. Another administrator unprotected the main article after it was kept, but the redirect has remained under full protection for 16 years. Do you think we could try lifting that as I'm not sure it's needed anymore? Thanks, DanCherek (talk) 23:07, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. I consider a recent post of yours to be a gross violation of WP:BLP policy.

[edit]

I am utterly appalled that anyone holding admin rights at Wikipedia should in any way consider this edit of yours to be in any way appropriate. [1] Given the self-evident violation of multiple Wikipedia policies involved, I would have to suggest that it would be in your own best interest, as well as that of Wikipedia, if you were to resign as an admin immediately. Should you fail to do so within a reasonable period, I shall be raising the matter at ArbCom. AndyTheGrump (talk) 12:58, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(watching) I endorse this view. It demonstrates a lack of understanding of some of our most fundamental policies and guidelines—neutrality, also a pillar, sourcing requirements and most importantly how not to slur living people in the encyclopaedia's words. Nothing personal, but it suggests that you either no longer care enough to uphold these principles, or you'ver simply forgotten then. As an admin you are expected to remain up-to-date with policy and demonstrate good judgment; that edit indicates neither, I'm afraid.

[edit]

Stop icon This is your only warning; if you violate Wikipedia's biographies of living persons policy by inserting unsourced or poorly sourced defamatory content into an article or any other Wikipedia page again, as you did at Mike Collins (politician), you may be blocked from editing without further notice. Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
