Hughie Fisher

[edit]

I got the information from the Southport F.C. official website's history page [1]. Having checked out the Scottish FA's records of players, it appears that he never played for Scotland. I will change the info on the Southport page. Number 57 16 October 2006

Nir Berkovic

[edit]

I don't have any problem with your removing this page. He is not an international player, and is currently playing in the second division. His only claims to fame are his family links and the fact he was at Arsenal for three months when he was 16.

 • Just realised he is playing in the top division, but still not of much importance! Number 57 30 October 2006

It is important to keep a cool head, especially when responding to comments against you or your edits. Personal attacks and disruptive comments only escalate a situation; please keep calm and remember that action can be taken against other parties if necessary. Attacking another user back, as you did on User_talk:86.6.47.178, can only satisfy trolls or anger contributors and leads to general bad feeling. Please try to remain civil with your comments. Footballers who died tragically young

[edit]

Hello! Thanks for your note. No need to worry about doing anything to the existing category, my robot will depopulate it very shortly. On reflection I wouldn't replace the category at all, myself, but for your convenience in case you want to do so I have listed the old category's articles: they are Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Duncan Edwards, Aaron Flahavan, Austin Hayes, Mark Jones (footballer), Steve Mills, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor, Liam Whelan. I have no strong preference for the name you choose for the "replacement" category, but "Footballers who died during their playing careers" is perhaps marginally better: use whatever you think best. Replacing [Football Club F.C.|Football Club] with a template

[edit]

Hi,

I noticed that you replaced the [Football Club F.C.|Football Club]'s with a template in the article on Kyle Critchell. Could you explain why as I've always assumed that the full way of doing this is better than a template (that usually is only used when editing and has subst: as part of it to make it into the full version). Makes it quicker as well. WikiGull 11:51, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again, thanks for your reply. I agree about the fewer keystrokes the better, so maybe you should use the template subst:fc|Southampton which with brackets around it will give you [Southampton F.C.|Southampton]. That way you get it looking how you want, but the link is straight to the club's proper page without having to diverted via redirect pages. My question was raised because you actually replaced the full link with one that goes via a template. the subst: bit replaces the template with what the template creates.

Anyway, yes I am a Torquay fan so hopefully we'll play Saints in the cup (though doubt it with our current form). WikiGull 19:08, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RE: George Kay

[edit]

Hi Daemonic Kangaroo, I did so because the user that added them has only ever contributed to Wikipedia to add links to his own personal website (generally frowned upon), and the pages contain little else that other than a couple of pictures and a referral link to Amazon, which I suspect is the main reason for the additions. If the pictures are not copyrighted, then maybe they could be included here, along with an attribution to the site. If they aren't, then we shouldn't be linking to them anyway. Of course, this in an open site, and you are free to readd stuff if you wish. I personally would rather you didn't though. All the best, Happy New Year. - Nzd (talk) 21:13, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions to the Keith Cassells article, but for legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.

Feel free to re-submit a new version of the article. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must include on the external site the statement "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later."

You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here. You can also leave a message on my talk page. Jkelly 00:31, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just thought you might like to know I managed to beef up the George Curtis article a bit. Good luck in getting all those Saints articles onto Wikipedia - I know how much of a slog it can be from my experience with the Arsenal ones. Qwghlm 00:31, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Do not redirect (soccer) articles to (soccer player)

[edit]

"(soccer player)" is too specific; you redirected some articles for people who are now better known as coaches. For US/Canadian players, the standard disambig is just "(soccer)"; it also helps in the long run if a player goes into coaching, which often happens. DR31 (talk) 05:00, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daemonic,

(Restore Apps (goals))

Here the heading "Apps (goals)" is considerably wider than most of the numbers I've seen below it, causing the table's column widths to appear unbalanced. If you're not keen on "A (G)*" plus explanatory footnote as a solution, does anything else come to mind...?  (Just seems a pity to have a good template compromised by a single factor...)  Regards, David Kernow (talk) 18:37, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can see what you are trying to achieve and the other changes you made definitely improved the appearance of the infobox. My problem with A (G) is that I have an aversion to abbreviations, but also the change hasn't really made the problem go away. The A/Apps is in the same vertical column as the first digit of the appearances (caps) and the (G)/(goals) follows straight after - this means that the (G)/(goals) is not centred over any particular column...
I hadn't realized that was the intention, but...
...this would mean that every single player article incorporating the template would need to be amended to fit [a] new layout.
Yes... I imagine it's a task that could be given to a bot in lieu of a simpler alternative...
...Perhaps we should ask the members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Football for their opinion. I'm not sure how you could compare one against the other though - this would probably mean creating a dummy template and adopting it on a few players articles just to see what it would look like.
I set up a couple of pages for this purpose – User:David Kernow/Test template and User:David Kernow/Test page – so will now copy the previous version and a few examples there. Feel free to tinker if you wish and/or provide a link for the WikiProject. Thanks for your reply, David (talk) 20:12, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Page nos in references

[edit]

There's a "pages" attribute in cite book so it's dead easy to do - see the footnotes in History of Arsenal F.C. (1886-1966) for how I have used it. If it's a direct quote then you might as well make it explicit in the article: e.g.

Parker was described in Holley & Chalk's The Alphabet of the Saints as "never the fastest of players, but he had wonderful positional sense and his tackling was always well-timed".[1]

with an appropriate footnote at the end. Qwghlm 14:37, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Thanks for your message - and yes, great win v Grimsby, still think we're doomed, but some hope again. Anyway, re Hoskins, I've got two books that I used on that article for his non-Torquay stuff, the 'Football League Players' Records 1988 to 1939' by Joyce, and a book called 'Football Managers' by Turner and White.

Both have the H as Hubert, and have him being born in Tettenhall in 1883. The managers book has him as joining Wolves in 1900 and joining the office staff in 1904. Doesn't say anything about him playing for any other club. the players' book (which I trust more than any other source I've found so far) has him playing for Freemantle, Southampton, Wolves, Dudley and Shrewsbury (in that order), with him playing in the league in the 1908-9 and 1909-10 seasons, which ties in with what you're saying. I'm inclined to think that the managers book is slightly incorrect and that he would have joined the Wolves office staff after his playing career was over, so will change the text to so that and add a reference. I'll also add a note to the talk page about the discrepancies we've identified in the books (I'm assuming it is the same person, particularly with him playing for Wolves around the right time for your book to be right (about that bit anyway). As for his managerial career, that's in lots of books with lists of managers and I wouldn't necessarily trust soccerbase for everything (they have no missing code, so just make up dates for sometime around then (otherwise you have lots of people moving on the 1st of the month!).

Look forward to working on some more joint Gulls-Saints articles with you in the future! WikiGull 16:59, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Football player infoboxes

[edit]

Thankyou for your input into the football player articles, but please do not amend the infoboxes to show season by season appearances & goals - this is not appropriate. The infobox is only a summary of a player's career. If you want to show season by season details, you should include these as a table in the body of the article.Daemonic Kangaroo 17:39, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting

[edit]

Hi Daemonic

Thanks for your message on my talk page. It seems that the article you refer to has already been speedy deleted (as is appropriate for a straight recreation of a deleted article), but for future reference, if you do want to add a nomination to the football project page, all you have to do is edit the "Nominations for deletion and page moves" section. At the bottom of the list of current nominations (immediately above where it says <!-- Deletion review -->, just add this text:

|-
|Name of the article you are nominating:
|AfD
|nomination date in the format yyyy-mm-dd

Then copy this text onto the AfD page:

 • *<small>This discussion has been included in WikiProject Football's list of football (soccer) related deletions. ~~~~</small>

Hope that makes sense! ChrisTheDude 14:42, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hampshire clubs (as per your request on my talk page)

 • Ex Southern League clubs - Canterbury, Eastleigh, Road Sea Southampton & Thornycrofts
 • Ex Wessex League clubs - Sholing, Wellworthy, Ryde & Portals
 • Ex Hellenic League club - RS Basingstoke
 • Ex Hampshire League top division - Mayflower, AFC Basingstoke, Bass (Alton), Awbridge and Pirelli General
 • For FA Amateur Cup exploits - RMLI Gosport (winners) and Bournemouth Gasworks (runner-up). Hope this is sufficient information - fchd 20:07, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Tinsley Lindley.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

helpme The picture referred to above is of a long-deceased footballer. Judging by his age in the photo, it was probably taken before 1900, and the photographer is presumably unknown. The photo appears to be the only none available for the subject as it appears on several other websites and is used as part of a book-cover illustration. In view of the age of the picture, can we assume that it is out of copyright? If so, what tags can I put on it to indicate its copyright status? Daemonic Kangaroo 14:23, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Height template within Infobox Football biography

[edit]

Hello... I saw you added height to the example usage of Infobox Football biography on Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Players. I've reverted the change, as I don't think this has been discussed anywhere. Personally, I'm against the use as it adds unnecessary wikilinking of m and in... I'm happy to go with the consensus if it goes against me, but I think it should be discussed first. robwingfield «TC» 11:28, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The opening paragraph should feature an overview of all his life. Your edits buried several of the key facts of his life and death, e.g. his early death, his heavy drinking and his status as a player at the bottom of the page. It is common practice for articles to feature on overview and then expand on the highlights with further sections. That way it encourages readers to read further. Hi - I see that you have reverted my edits to the style in which the seasons are shown both in the text and in the table from the style 1983-84 to 1983-1984. I take your point that the MoS is more or less silent on this matter, although there seems to be a general concensus that 1983-84 is preferable. List of England international footballers (alphabetical)

[edit]

Following discussions on Wikipedia:WikiProject Football it was decided to convert List of England international footballers (alphabetical) into a sortable table. I have started to build the table, but seem to have hit a limit on the number of templates that can be included. If the whole list was to be included in the table, there would be 1150+ entries in the list, each of which will have three columns sorted by date using the Dts template plus the subject's names being sorted using the sortname template.

I have read the article Wikipedia:Template limits but I must confess that most of it went straight over the top of my head! Am I attempting the impossible or can the limit be changed? If not do you have any suggestions?

I would appreciate any help or advice you can give. Thanks. Daemonic Kangaroo 04:49, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You could try substing the templates by adding subst: just after the opening {{; this reduces the server load and therefore the problem due to template limits. (It makes the articles less readable though.) This might reduce the template limits enough for the article to work. --ais523 10:47, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for your article, i just have a request: as the following picture Image:Pailheres.jpg has a free licence, can you upload it on Commons, then other wiki projects could use it. In general, can you upload all your free pictures on Commons, then they could be used on en.wikipedia and all others wikipedia projects. Thanks a lot. Guérin Nicolas 15:36, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Do you mind telling me why you reverted a valid, referenced edit with no explanation? Furthermore, could you explain why you used an automated tool intended solely for vandalism reversion to do so? Neil  18:00, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Southern Football League

[edit]

I have now removed Slimbridge from the table of clubs (though perhaps this table is now redundant with the templates at the bottom of the page), and made the necessary statement on the Slimbridge F.C. page. - fchd 06:07, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

was going to get in touch, thanks for adding categories, pin-pointing location on map (how do you do that?) and tour de France stuff. Hopefully this article will prove useful as the Tour rolls into town. looked-up ballades de cavalles and can't find much that's useful. ballades doesn't appear to be in the dictionary though it was the title of a French film in 1983 [2]! Cavalle looks it's used to be the name of a place or person, probably best to delete. were you doing up at 5am in the morning?! Tom 12:16, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to add some tour material to Tallard. Also I'll try and start on Marcoussis at some point (start of final stage) [3] Tom 14:49, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What was written appears to be valid (see here), albeit that it was done poorly. I'll add it back in with the reference. --Jameboy 16:31, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the full names. You obviously have the book to get! It's odd that Connor's first name wasn't in there, since the rest of that season's squad was.

Template:Nft

[edit]

My mistake. I didn't really consider what would happen if it were subst'ed (despite it being in the instructions) that it would make a huge garbled bit of text. Thanks for reverting the changes to the template. If you have any questions, please contact me at my talk page. Ian Manka 21:11, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

One thing I just realized was the possibility of subst: the #switch, thereby eliminating all of that crazy text, but I don't know how that would work in a real situation, nor if it'd work in a template or not. I'll be doing some testing somewhere, and if I find a fix, I'll change the template. Another possibility is the tag. I'll test that also. If you have any questions, please contact me at my talk page. Albert Arthur Alfred etc etc Brown

[edit]

In my attempts at simplifying the complicated dab page that is Arthur Brown i have confused myself. Would you disagree with moving Arthur Brown (footballer) to Albert Arthur Brown given that is his real name. I have come across several sources that call him that and frankly it is confusing. Any comments, suggestions, objections welcome! Woodym555 17:39, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, i noticed as most of them are in my watchlist!! Your changes look good. I was amazed at the number of Arthur/Alfred Browns who played for Villa in the late 19th Century. It is all cleared up now though. Thanks Woodym555 20:00, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gary McAllister

[edit]

Can you tell me why since his name is spelt McAllister and its pronounced Mc not Mac (like Macdonald) that the default sort has been set to Macallister? Chappy God's Own Country TC 11:22, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, regarding the linked £ sign, I was sure i'd read somewhere that the first occurrence should be linked, but just checked WP:$ and was delighted to find it shouldn't. Thanks for that, cheers, Struway2 | Talk 16:06, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Flagicon

[edit]

Does anyone know what has happened to the flagicons. All I can see, both in IE7 and in FireFox, is an empty rectangle where the flag should be. Some flags such as Wales & Northern Ireand seem OK but most of them have gone. Any ideas? Daemonic Kangaroo 10:23, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I've noticed this problem on nearly all the flagicons I've seen, too. Jordan5001 10:36, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think the flagicons are being restored one by one. Jordan5001 11:17, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mike Keeping

[edit]

Hey. Seeing you're the expert on Southampton, I thought I'd ask you a question on something I've been wandering about. Can you tell me anything about a player called "Mike Keeping", who played for Southampton in the 1920's? I'm trying to find out if he's the same person as Michael Keeping, a former manager of Real Madrid. Thanks, Mattythewhite 11:12, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Does your book give him as "Mike" or "Michael", too? Cheers, Mattythewhite 11:22, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Southampton template

[edit]

I have fixed the width of the template... I just don't know how many caretaker managers the Saints have, since I am just a poor Sunderland fans, so I don't add many... (if you have the list, I dont' mind adding them), just like Sunderland and Leeds...

Btw, are you from Hong Kong, updating the Bulova article... It seems quite difficult to find old defunct teams logo and other lower tier teams... :) Kkkc 09:41, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ryan Wallace

[edit]

The suspiciously named User:Wallace40 keeps adding in claims that a Southampton youth player called Ryan Wallace is on loan to Salibsury City. I can't find any sources to confirm this fact, or even that the Saints have a youth player by that name - can you shed any light........? ChrisTheDude 09:02, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Will Scott

[edit]

Hi. Used my old football managers book, will try and remember to add the reference at some point. I noticed the Walter Scott as well, but think it might be someone different (and that maybe Walter Scott didn't play for South Shields really). The years of birth are quite different, so I think that rules them out as being the same person for sure. WikiGull 12:09, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Honours won

[edit]

Hi, I was wondering what reason you had for changing "Honours" sections to "Honours won"? The layout of the articles followed Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Players which just has "Honours". Also, it seems a bit excessive to me adding a sub-section "As a player", even when there are only a couple of lines, as diff for example. Or is this yet another MoS standard that I've missed? cheers, Struway2 | Talk 07:11, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply, and sorry if my edit summary to Eddy Brown came over a bit aggressive, I do have a bit of an obsession with readability. People won't bother with expanses of unrelieved prose, but they're equally put off if what they're presented with looks excessively broken up. I very much agree with the Guide to layout, where it says The number of single-sentence paragraphs should be minimized, since these can inhibit the flow of the text. ... Just as for paragraphs, any sections and subsections that are very short will make the article look cluttered and inhibit the flow. The Brown article is quite short, too short really even for the number of headings (5) left in there, e.g. for context the Broughton quote obviously has to be in the Broughton para, but what it illustrates is the man's personality.
Pompous rant over ;-)
Scarborough - in 1963 he was definitely player-manager, 1964 probably still playing, I'll try and look it up. And the Broughton honours mentioned in the article should go in. Also, I might move the quote out of the lead (where it shouldn't really be anyway) and into the Personality section and call it Style and personality. cheers, Struway2 | Talk 08:48, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Have you seen this BBC article? I'm pretty certain they used the Wikipedia article for their research. Its an error they made that gives it away - saying he made 23 appearances for Manchester City, when our article states "23 league games that season". Oldelpaso 13:06, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've noticed it a couple of times before, only rarely though. The style of BBC articles tends to put some background details after the meat of the story, and once or twice some of that bit has seemed familiar, not plagiarised by any means, but you could tell where it was from. I think one of them was a story about the City of Manchester Stadium (which I was intimately familiar with the content of through getting it to FA), though to be fair our article is probably the most comprehensive about the ground available online. Nice to know our work is appreciated! Mettomo was solid enough from what I remember. He played on the right of a back three in a wingback system. Keegan fell out with him after he arrived back late from the African Nations Cup (ought to find a cite for that and put it in the article), and he rarely played after that. Hi! I've noticed that you've moved the above page. I can seee that there are quite a few links that refer to the Woolston in Cheshire which are now incorrect. Can I ask whether you will be correcting those as well? It would certainly help if you would do that. Thanks.  DDStretch  (talk) 18:38, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the message. There's already a disambiguation page at [[Woolston (disambiguation), and so Woolston should just redirect there after all the existing links have been properly disambiguated to Woolston, Cheshire or Woolston, Hampshire.  DDStretch  (talk) 19:43, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure your latest edits fit in with what is recommended (see WP:MOSDAB.) my reading of this is that the original disambiguation page (Woolston (disambiguation) should be used as the target for a redirection, and not the other way round. In doing what you have done, you have also potentially destroyed the ease with which the editing history of the disambiguation link can be found, which is definitely to be avoided if possible. I would change it back if I were you.  DDStretch  (talk) 21:43, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Eddie Anaclet

Yes, but as WP:BIO states, he has to have played in a fully professional league - which the FA Cup isn't. It includes amateur and semi-professional teams. And it's not a league either. Mattythewhite 19:10, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't really very clear on guidelines and policies and the such back then, and to be honest, it doesn't matter to me who removed the prod, as they seem to be wrong! Mattythewhite 19:12, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
