Re: RfA

I'd say that's a wise idea, but obviously it's your call. In my opinion, a willingness to accept the fact that you need more experience demonstrates maturity, so you're already off to a good start. :) –Juliancolton | Talk 00:53, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

I've decided to let it run for a little while more. I want to see the reasons why other users oppose, and I'll start an editor review later. Thanks, -download ׀ sign! 01:06, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
Sounds good. Best of luck! –Juliancolton | Talk 01:13, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
I agree. If you're getting constructive feedback (as I hope mine was!) then let it run - you'll get far more feedback this way than by opening an editor review. Of course, if it starts to get nasty or if you've had enough, then withdraw. But hopefully it won't. Best wishes, — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:44, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

question

Since you are applying to become an admin, and admins should know everything, I have come to you with a question. When should the Shared IP template be used? If you reply here, please leave a talkback at my talk page. Thanks (and good luck on the RFA) Griffinofwales (talk) 04:49, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

The template's documentation states:

I'm pretty sure you're allowed to place it on the user talk page of anonymous editors when it has been confirmed that multiple editors use the IP. Hope that helps. -download ׀ sign! 05:01, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
I was just checking to see if a vandal had to use the IP before the template was placed.

When should Template:ISP be used? Griffinofwales (talk) 05:06, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure it should be used when it is confirmed that an IP address is not stable, and after the internet connection is disconnected, the IP address is used by another person. This is different than {{sharedIP}} as the SharedIP template may show that two or more people who use the same computer/internet connection on a regular schedule. -download ׀ sign! 01:21, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
That's why you submitted a RFA and I didn't.

Is there an easy way to know if IP addresses switch computers? Griffinofwales (talk) 01:35, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

That's the tricky part. It's either placed by the IP address itself, when there's multiple editors from a company, etc. In other cases, you'd need to refer to the editing style of the IP, and see if it might be shared. However, this is not always correct. So, I guess there is no easy way to do so. If you'd like to welcome IPs and encourage them to create an account, you could try adding {{subst:welcomeIP}} to their talk page though. -download ׀ sign! 01:38, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

At your RFA a nominator mentioned a GA you worked on but you removed it from your list of articles because you only did some minor edits. You added the article to your user page at 1:18 GMT December 18, 2008. This might explain something. Griffinofwales (talk) 01:48, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

I really have no idea why I added the article, but looking at my contributions I believe that I added it as I made some important edits to Linkin Park's songs. -download ׀ sign! 02:34, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Another question! Are IP addresses allow to blank their own talk pages? Griffinofwales (talk) 21:23, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Actually, they are. In fact, all users can remove anything off their talk page other than {{unblock}} templates while they are still blocked. -download ׀ sign! 21:58, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

…unfortunately did not demonstrate the consensus necessary to become a sysop; I'm sorry. However, you received both support, and advice from those who did not feel you were ready at this time. Hopefully, if you are still interested, you can use this as a wiki-learning experience and further develop the skill and judgment that would allow you to gain the community's trust. I don;t think our paths have crossed before but I just wanted to say it's a shame your RfA didn't make it. I suppose I can understand the concerns of those editors who opposed it, but I thought you would have made a good job of it. C'est la vie, I suppose. An old adoptée calling for help...

Hi Download! This is the first time I'll be asking for help since I graduated from the adopt-a-user program. I've made a portal on one of my subpages about myself (located here) and I'm kind of stuck on what to do. I want to add the stuff that's on the main page like Today;s featured article and On this day..., but I don't know how to put them in. If possible, can you tell me how? Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 18:32, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

To add the featured article, you can add {{Wikipedia:Today's featured article/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}}}} to your page. {{Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}}}} adds On this day. -download ׀ sign! 22:16, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Another question

Can't I have a barnstar for having the largest ammount of userboxes? I think I do have the most; I did some maths and figured out I have about 357 boxes on my page. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 21:17, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your support

Unfortunately, my RFA was closed recently with a final tally of 75½/38/10. Though it didn't succeed, I wanted to thank you for your support and I hope I can count on it in the future. Even though it didn't pass, it had a nearly 2 to 1 ratio of support and I am quite encouraged by those results. I intend to review the support, oppose, and neutral !votes and see what I can do to address those concerns that were brought up and resubmit in a few months. If you would like to assist in my betterment and/or co-nominate me in the future, please let me know on my talk page. Special thanks go to Schmidt, MICHAEL Q., TomStar81, and henrik for their co-nominations and support. — BQZip01 — talk

An opportunaty to say thanks!

Thanks for the barnstar you gave me last night. Its great! Just out of interest, do you know any other things I can get barnstars or WikiLoves for? I just want a great collection of them, and I'm sure there's other things that are worth getting one for (possibly most ammount of subpages?). Also, if you have any suggestions on improving my pages then please tell me. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 16:38, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Barnstars aren't really for that purpose; maybe you might see WP:STAR for that. Some examples might be found on my awards page. -download ׀ sign! 00:41, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Another thing

I almost forgot, is there a program like Adopt-a-user where instead of one helping the other, they help each other? That's would be useful to me. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 16:38, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Of course, there's the WP:Helpdesk. -download ׀ sign! 00:41, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

A third thing

So many questions! Just want to ask, how do you get that archive thing on the right-hand side of your talk page? I can't get it to show on my page, and I want one. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 16:47, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Add this to your userpage, toggling any values if needed:

{{Archive box|image=[[Image:Exquisite-folder html.png]] |{{User:ClueBot III/ArchiveThis |archiveprefix=User talk:Ross Rhodes/Archives/ |format=Y/F |age=192 |index=yes }} }} This should get ClueBot III to come along and archive your page. See Help:Archiving a talk page for more info. -download ׀ sign! 00:31, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

So does ClueBot III archive things older than two days? Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 09:33, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
You can make it archive threads older than two days by changing a parameter:

{{Archive box|image=[[Image:Exquisite-folder html.png]] |{{User:ClueBot III/ArchiveThis |archiveprefix=User talk:Ross Rhodes/Archives/ |format=Y/F |age=48 |index=yes }} }} That should work. -download ׀ sign! 21:24, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

A fourth thing

I'm probably annoying you now with all these things, though can you check out my useful links page and try to make it better and more attrative? That would be great if you could. :) Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 22:08, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

You could always add links to WP:ANI, etc. Anyways, to make it more attractive I might copy the style of your userpage, using a green table. I could help you do this if you would like. -download ׀ sign! 00:35, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Something I think you better check out...

Hi Download. While contributing to a discussion on Timeline of United States inventions, a user left a message at the bottom of the section saying the following;

I'll simply repeat myself by suggesting that this list be deleted and that the list items be worked into their respective articles. I find no justification for this list beyond an affirmation of "American exceptionalism," which would be a rather unencyclopedic stance to take. If deletion is off the table and the best that can be hoped for is a name change, then I suggest we merge this list with "America, Fuck Yeah" and use that title, which approximates the vibe that this list gives off.

I think something should be done about this. If you want to find this on the talk page, its the eighth paragraph on the Name change section. I just thought something should be done about it and have no idea what to do. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 20:04, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

This hasn't violated Wikipedia policy, as this user is just expressing his opinion. However, it's quite unreasonable suggesting the article be renamed to that name. If this user starts acting like a troll, you could possibly take this to WP:ANI. As for my opinion, I think the name is adequate as it expresses the same idea in a short title; otherwise, it could be changed to Timeline of inventions from the United States. -download ׀ sign! 02:19, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

The "tone" template

Please explain what you mean by "style may need work" in your comment on the "tone" template you placed on the "Igor Panarin" page. Did you mean to do this work yourself? If you think that I can do it (with my limited knowledge of English), please be more specific - what exactly needs improvement and where? Thanks! Лъчезар (talk) 07:32, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

I thought the article was written similarly to a personal reflection or essay. This should be an easy fix - I think section titles such as "And what about Russia?" and "Reflections" may need to be reworded. -download ׀ sign! 22:47, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
OK, now I understand. Well, you already changed the first of these titles, and I - the second, so I think that the template can be removed, which I just did. Of course, if there are more sections whose titles can be improved, feel free to do it, or (if you feel appropriate) put that template again, noting which other section titles need rewording. It is possible to protect all pages on Wikipedia. However, pages are not protected preemptively. I've checked your userpage and talk page and find no signs of vandalism; therefore, a protection request will most likely be denied. However, I would strongly discourage protecting one's talk page in any way unless messages become threats and release personal information. Should you ever have any vandalism on a page in your userpage, however, you can go to WP:RFPP to request page protection. -download ׀ sign! 22:27, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

There were issues raised regarding my adminship that I intend to cogitate upon, but I am grateful for the very many supportive comments I received and for the efforts of certain editors (Ceoil, Noroton and Lar especially) in responding to some issues. I wish to note how humbled I was when I read Buster7's support comment, although a fair majority gave me great pleasure. I would also note those whose opposes or neutral were based in process concerns and who otherwise commented kindly in regard to my record.
I recognise that the process itself was unusual, and the format was generally considered questionable - and I accept that I was mistaken in my perception of how it would be received - but I am particularly grateful for those whose opposes and neutrals were based in perceptions of how I was not performing to the standards expected of an administrator. As much as the support I received, those comments are hopefully going to allow me to be a better contributor to the project. Thank you. Very much. LessHeard vanU (talk) 13:02, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi, again!

Hi, i decided to come back!--→RatónBat→ 11:16, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

My new secret page.

I made a new secret page! Can you find it? Try! --Sushiflinger (Goldblattster) (talk!) 15:19, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Just found it.  :) It was quite hard to find. -download ׀ sign! 21:06, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for saying it was hard. I am not sure if you did, but the plan was to go to User:Sushiflinger/sandbox2 and click on the "0101010101" link, and then you would go to the penny page. I was thinking of making it "harder" also so that I could upload the image saying congrats instead of text because usually the image on the bottom would load last, but I decided not to because if they found the image page they could find my secret page. --Sushiflinger (Goldblattster) (talk!) 12:48, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
Well, I'm glad to be the first one to have signed the page.  :) -download ׀ sign! 17:04, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Similarities

You compose music on Mixcraft? Me too! I thought I'd just mention it. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 21:40, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

I don't use it extensively, but I do use it once in a while. We seem to have many similarities.  :) -download ׀ sign! 21:41, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
I know, and I just happened to be adopted by you. One thing you're definatly better at is editing on Wikipedia. :) Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 21:53, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
You've already seen my userbox page, so you'll know what else we have in common I suppose. I think you should have a page with all your userboxes, because I'm sure you could have more than you do on your userpage, and I could get to know you a little better. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 22:01, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
I guess I might consider making a userbox page. Happy editing!  :) -download ׀ sign! 00:22, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
Let me know if you do make one. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 08:51, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Listen to this

Here are some jokes I heard; tell me what you think of them.

Question Answer
What's big and green, and can't fly? A field!
What's pick and fluffy? Pink fluff!
What's red and bad for your teeth? A brick!
What's brown and sticky? A stick!

:) Nice jokes, I like the word play! -download ׀ sign! 04:08, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
Still thinking about the userbox page? I suppose you know you can find a gallery of them here. That's where I got all mine from. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 09:21, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
I'm making one at the moment.  :) -download ׀ sign! 17:07, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
One box at the moment. Better than none I suppose. I presume you'll add more later if you aren't at the moment. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 17:38, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
I'll be adding more over the next few days. I just added a lot related to Wikipedia. -download ׀ sign! 17:43, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
It's good. Can you let me know when it's finished? I'd like to see it when it's complete. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 17:58, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
