    • We now have a central repository for wikibase-cli templates, with the aim to document best practices, offer general purpose request/create/edit templates, but also offer more niche templates as examples of what's possible: contributions and template requests welcome!
  • Development
    • Simple Query Builder development continues. We worked on combining different query conditions as well as internationalisation.
    • Making the precision translatable in geocoordinate and date inputs (phab:T269102)
    • Changes to descriptions in a specific language now show up on watchlist and recent changes on the Wikipedia and co for that language (phab:T191831)
    • Finished working on the problem of incorrectly-escaped label being included in a link to Special:NewItem if there are no search results (phab:T263258)
    • Investigating why we're currently skipping a significant number of Item IDs (phab:T268625)

Why is it "vandalism" to edit liberal non-sense ? Since when is George W. Bush is considered a member of the Christian right?

What about the claim that Ann Coulter is part of the Christian Right? Her books "Slander", "Treason", and "How to Talk to a Liberal if You Must" are biased but have no religious content whatsoever. So again, how can Ann Coulter be in the Christian Right list?

ASIA album

Hello Fuzheado. You made a mistake. You removed my reference to the ASIA album appearing in the 2013 Tom Cruise movie "Oblivion" simply because the reference didn't have a citation associated with it. Why would I need to provide a citation if I personally watched the movie and observed the actual appearance myself? Cite Unseen update

Hello! Thank you for using Cite Unseen. The script recently received a significant update, detailed below.

  • You can now toggle which icons you do or don't want to see. See the configuration section for details. All icons are enabled by default except for the new Green checkmark generally reliable icon (described below).
  • New categorizations/icons:
    • Megaphone Advocacy: Organizations that are engaged in advocacy (anything from political to civil rights to lobbying). Note that an advocacy group can be reliable; this indicator simply serves to note when a source's primary purpose is to advocate for certain positions or policies, which is important to keep in mind when consuming a source.
    • Hand writing Editable: Sites that are editable by the public, such as wikis (Wikipedia, Fandom) or some databases (IMDb, Discogs).
    • Red journal with an X Predatory journals: These sites charge publication fees to authors without checking articles for quality and legitimacy.
    • Perennial source categories: Cite Unseen will mark sources as Green checkmark generally reliable, Exlamation mark in orange triangle marginally reliable, No symbol generally unreliable, Stop hand deprecated, and Black X blacklisted. This is based on Wikipedia's perennial sources list, which reflects community consensus on frequently discussed sources. Sources that have multiple categorizations are marked as Blue question mark varied reliability. Note that Green checkmark generally reliable icons are disabled by default to reduce clutter, but you can enable them through your custom config. A special thanks to Newslinger, whose new Sourceror API provides the perennial sources list in a clean, structured format.
  • With the addition of the new categorizations, the biased source icon has been removed. This category was very broad, and repetitive to the new advocacy and perennial sources categorizations that are more informative.

  • Development
    • Continuing to work on the query builder. It can now have more than one query conditions. One of the next steps is making it possible to query for Item values. You can follow along on the demo system.
    • Finished working on the problem of values of Statements that link to Forms and Senses not having language attributes associated with them in the HTML code (phab:T267023)
    • Fixed language selectors covering other input fields when using keyboard navigation for Special:NewItem and Special:NewLexeme (phab:T266638)
    • Fixed language fallback indicators sometimes still shown for variant fallbacks (phab:T267502)

BLP1E request for clarification

In the closure summary at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ashli Babbitt you said:

all three criteria are satisfied as stated in the policy

Since the third criterion is actually one of three possibilities, like A + B + (C or D or E) I was hoping you could clarify which you believe is true:

  1. that the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol was insignificant
  2. that Ashli's role in the event was insignificant
  3. that documentation of Ashli's role was insignificant

I think it would be better in future when articles are removed on the basis of 1E policy that closers specify which of the three options was used to fulfill the 3rd criterion. I'm wondering if this could be put forth as an administrative guideline for others to use, but I am not sure where the appropriate place would be to make this proposal. Edit to the 'Alt-tech' article

Hi Fuzheado. You removed my edit to the 'Alt-tech' article, on the grounds that it did not include a source. I want to explain that the purpose of that edit was not to add specifically new information that requires a source, but to add a small note to a section that I believe provides better context to the information presented. A researcher was quoted in the article as stating (paraphrase) that the website 4chan was created to facilitate alt-right movements and viewpoints, along with a couple or so of other sites. After this piece of information, I added, in brackets, that the site 4chan was not created out of a politically-motivated dispute, and only contained one, neutral political board. I feel this is a relevant addendum to the information about the statement from that researcher, as the article in general provides the context of these alt-tech sites being motivated by political disputes within other social media sites and their moderation - while 4chan is not a site which was created out of such a dispute. It is also relevant because of the fact that it was stated in the article the belief of a researcher tha the site was created to facilitate right-wing views - there is no specific evidence of this.

Please consider allowing the edit to remain on the article, thank you for your consideration.

    • Continued working on the Query Builder. We focused on making it possible to query for Item values and being able to limit the number of Items in the result. We also looked into how to query for quantity values.
    • Changed P920’s data type from string to external identifier (phab:T269205)
    • Finished working on the problem of Items that have the page prop wikibase:statements set to 0 but actually do have statements (phab:T145712)
    • Continued work on the “Publishing” step of the Wikibase release pipeline by building and testing three components of the software suite: Wikibase (phab: T267893), Query Service frontend (phab:T268025), and Query Service backend (phab:T268022)

January 15, 6pm: Wikimedia NYC celebrates 20 years of Wikipedia

Wikipedia Day is always a big day for Wikimedia NYC. While we cannot meet in person, we still have something special planned. We will begin the event with the debut of a new video celebrating our community. This will be followed by a panel discussion with some of the people you'll see in the video talking about Wikipedia's 20th anniversary, Wikimedia New York City, and the amazing work they do on Wikimedia projects.

The event will be broadcast live via YouTube. Feel free to ask questions for the panel through the chat!

We will also have some NYC wiki trivia you can participate in, with confectionery prizes.

    • Continued working on the Query Builder. We continued to set up tracking for the number of queries that result in an error, timeout, etc. (phab:T269224). We als made it possible to query for Item values (phab:T268814). You can always try the current state on the test system.
    • Finished fixing an issue with whitespace being stripped while typing when editing Lexemes (phab:T250550)
    • Worked on no error being shown when trying to save Lemma with invalid language code (phab:T265783)
    • Working on using Special:MyLanguage feature for more links in the Wikidata Query Service interface to redirect people to documentation in their language (phab:T267656)
    • Continued interviewing people to better understand how to best compare Wikidata's data against other databases in order to find mismatches that need the editors' attention

I only made the edit because I was pretty surprised it wasn't listed on the page as it gets referenced several times on the show.   • Tool of the week
    • Labelcleaner is a script by Andrew Gray used to clean up Wikidata labels/aliases/descriptions for a given language on a set of items.
  • Development
    • Continuing development on the first version of the Query Builder. It's starting to be able to do the first really meaningful queries now. Latest addition was the ability to negate conditions. Up next is the ability to connect conditions with OR instead of only AND as well as querying for quantities and ranges. You can follow along on the test system.
    • Exploring possible solutions for how to compare Wikidata's data against other databases to find and highlight mismatches automatically.
    • Added lexicographical data codes for a few languages: rkt, ctg (phab:T271589), and az-cyrl (phab:T265906)
    • Finished working on the issue of TypeError on a diff of a Wikidata talk page phab:T271402
    • Updated Wikidata unit conversion configuration (phab:T267644)

The changes in question were the result of inside information - although admittedly, I confess that there is no direct source for this. However, I felt the information pertinent enough to warrant inclusion, given the nature of the topic. In this instance, too much credance is given to Fincham as a "composer", given that the majority of his work was only attained after his partner became chairwoman of the choir commissioning the piece. It is also noteworthy that this is despite several choir members being composers professionally, and not having been granted similar opportunities. I suppose there have been only two participants in the discussion, myself and the major contributor to the article to be merged. The originator of the merge did not respond further, even after being pinged. After a full month, this lack of interest indicates to me that the discussion is over, not that it should remain.     • Made it possible to connect query conditions with OR (instead of only AND) in the Query Builder (phab:T272694)
    • Making it possible to query only for statements with or without a reference in the Query Builder (phab:T272699)
    • Continuing to work on adding a rate limit for creating Item IDs to prevent people from allocating a large number of unassigned Item IDs that are then lost (phab:T272032)

    • Fixed language code "dag" for Dagbani not working for Lemmas for Lexemes (phab:T272242)
    • Fixing the bug where the Property selector is not falling back from language variant to major language for Property labels (phab:T272712)
    • Adding a rate limit for creating Item IDs to avoid skipping so many due to misbehaving bots (phab:T272032)
    • Fixed the case where no error was shown when trying to save a lemma with an invalid language code (phab:T265783)
    • Fixed a but where merging two Lexemes fails if the source Lexeme has links to its own Senses (phab:T273830)
    • Increasing the rate of edits that trigger a check by the constraint checker to 50%. This will increase the number of constraints violations that you can query in the Query Service. (phab:T204031)
    • Making it possible to add interwiki links to/from Multilingual Wikisource (phab:T138332)

Hi there, I saw you declined the AIV of User:Pubg ban,stating the edits were not vandalism.The user in question had messed up the order of destinations (A,C,B instead of A,B,C) , had continuously added unsourced destinations OG to GBI and 2T to BLR as "coming soon" in violation of WP:AIRPORTS and added that Hubli Airport was a hub for IndiGo (which the airport is not), done once it could be a test edit or simply someone unaware of the guidelines, done thrice without responding to user talk page warnings reeks of DE to me.   • When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
  • When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
  • There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

Mz7, thanks for the info. I would personally argue that tagging socks does not violate DENY, rather it creates a better picture of an LTA's extent and makes cross-checking behaviour easier. IceWelder, yes, that's correct (re Tuxedo Labs). The reason I'm hesitant to apply tags in this specific case is because it's clear the user is trying to get as much attention as possible, even tagging their own accounts [7], and I'm loath to grant them their wish (although I suspect that by having this discussion, I've already done so). I do understand where you're coming from that tagging makes identifying future socks easier—it's always a bit of a cost-benefit analysis in these situations, and it tends to be a judgment call rather than a clear-cut answer. A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Hodl is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hodl (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article.

    • Work on the first version of the Query Builder is nearing its end. Doing remaining work on querying for quantities, dates and ranges as well as polishing and bug fixing.

    • Fixed an issue where the termbox on Item pages used the wrong list of languages on the mobile version (phab:T275611)
    • Cleaned up deleted Items from the term store database table (phab:T263730)
    • Got feedback on the initial click-dummies for checking Wikidata's data against other databases to find mismatches

  • Development
    • The dev team spent the last week prototyping a few things to learn if some things would be feasible/a good idea. Among other things we tried building a small tool to connect Senses to Items, looked into the different types of ontology issues that can be found on Wikidata and checked what using a document store for data storage would look like.
    • Note: from March 29th until April 12th, Mohammed Sadat (WMDE) is not available to answer messages. If you have any requests for the development team, please ask on Contact the development team. For any emergency, you can contact Lea Lacroix (WMDE). Because of Easter holidays in Germany, the upcoming newsletter will be issued one day later, on April 6th.

  • Following a request for comment, F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a has been deprecated; it covered immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
  • Following a request for comment, page movers were granted the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target.

Technical news

  • When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split and it might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. (T278350)
  • Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)

  • Tool of the week
    • QRank is a tool providing a rank for Wikidata entities based on page view statistics from several Wikimedia projects.
  • Other Noteworthy Stuff
    • The final version of the Wikibase Yearly Summary 2020 has been published.
    • Wikidata Lexeme Forms now supports additional Breton templates (Source)
    • User:Nikki/LexemeAddIPA.js userscript adds a link in the header for forms on lexeme pages which opens a dialog for adding IPA statements to forms that do not have any yet.
    • LexSAOB adds Svenska Akademiens ordbok (SAOB) identifiers to Swedish lexemes in Wikidata.
  • Development
    • We continued to make improvements to the Query builder. We worked on adding a footer to the Query Builder (phab:T268643) and showing all relevant columns in the query result (phab:T277646) as well as querying for dates (phab:T272697)
    • Fixed a bug where Item pages scrolls back to "In more languages" block after every change of DOM (phab:T277999, being deployed to Wikidata later this week)
    • Continued working on a new grafana graph to track editor numbers split by namespace (phab:T275999)
    • Finished a small tool to get the ORES quality score for a list of Items. Waiting for deployment to toolforge for broader use now.
    • Defined remaining work for redirect sitelink exceptions (phab:T278962)

Wikidata weekly summary #463

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Tool of the week
    • EditSum, a user script which allows to attach custom summary text to any label/statement/sitelink/etc. modification.
  • Development
    • Started research and collecting material for the work on improvements to the Lexeme UI and prepared the first interviews
    • Finishing up the work on the first version of the Query Builder. We still need to get the security review before we can deploy it properly. Current state can be tested on the test system.
    • Finalized the dashboard to see the number of (active/very active) editors split by namespace. See the graphs at the bottom of this dashboard.
    • Continued working on the remaining pieces needed to fully support editing statements on Senses of a Lexeme (phab:T199896)
