- Windschuttle's work "Fabrication of Aboriginal History" has been rigorously rebuffed and resoundingly discredited since it was published. The article is subject a lot of subtle IP vandalism and racial abuse, it has been on pending changes for a long time, this is nothing new. There is no abuse of rollback, there is no conspiracy, I made one revert of an unverifiable edit apparently sourced to a controversial yet discredited source about living people add to that two other cherry picked reverts from the last 6 months of some 20 odd IP edits many of which have also been reverted, voila we have practical demonstration of Fake news in the making Gnangarra 00:00, 10 November 2017 (UTC)

- The bookmark icon for creating a "Saved filter" is now grayed when it is not possible to save. Before it was not visible. Bookmarking is unavailable when, for example, the current filter set is already saved. [5]

Recent changes
- List items (suggested items and in-progress/published translations) layout restyled to prevent overflows on small screen sizes.
- Search results for new translation dialog are now embedded, instead of being displayed in floating menu. Search results remain displayed when tabbed out and can be closed using ESC key.
- Missing pages are no longer shown when there is no match for search query. Message informing that there are no results is displayed instead.
- Embedded search results enabled to provide users with more translation opportunities. Articles user recently edited (in currently selected source language wiki) are surfaced when there is no input in search bar, with additional info if article is missing in user's currently selected target language.
- Long suggestion descriptions are limited to three lines, and the rest is truncated, which is indicated by ellipsis.
- Chart data representing user translation statistics in now showing all the months since user's first published translation. Months that went without translation are now displayed in chart as well.
- A loading indicator is shown while suggestions are loading.
- Button to discard dialog is now shown through the whole process of selecting article to translate.

Hello, Gnangarra. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting[edit]
As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. The filters are now deployed as a default feature on all wikis on RecentChanges and RecentChangesLinked pages.- The filters are still available as a Beta feature on all wikis on Watchlists. Please try them!
- LiveUpdates have been deployed as a default feature for all wikis.
- On wikis using Extension:Translate, translated messages can now be filtered. System messages can be filtered as well, on all wikis. [12]
- "View new changes since $1" link is now more prominent, to invite users to use that native feature to update the list of results. [13]
- Pagination and time period selectors are now combined and located on the right on left-to-right wikis. [14]
- When a user wanted to click outside of the filter menu to close it, it was possible to click on "revert" link by accident. It is not possible anymore. [15]

- More space is given to the language filter, to increase responsiveness and show more language names without truncation. [22]
- While searching for a new page to translate, duplicates are not shown anymore for user search input. [23]

User group for Military Historians[edit]
Greetings,
"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

- Longer titles of selected pages are displayed in smaller. Some space has been added around to increase readability.
- Language codes are not truncated by ellipsis anymore. Only full, autonym language names are subject to truncation.
- Minimal screen sizes and selected suggestion dialog have been revisited. They are more consistent in responding to screen size changes.
- Discard button is no longer shown on small screen sizes.
- Language filters no longer render wrong or non-existent language codes. [39]
- The "New translation" dialog now shows a loading indicator and doesn't display an error when you change the source language after an unsuccessful research. [40]

Nomination of BrowseAloud for deletion[edit]
A discussion is taking place as to whether the article BrowseAloud is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/BrowseAloud (3rd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

- Between week 7 and 20 February, when you thanked someone for an edit, the thank went to the latest unthanked edit to that page. It didn't matter which edit you tried to give thanks for. This has been fixed. [57]

What's new?
The Collaboration team has announced the start of a new project: In-Context Help and Onboarding. The idea is to improve retention of new wiki editors by giving them short tutorials and other training experiences related to, and triggered by, their current activities on the wikis (that’s the “in context” part). The project follows from the conclusions of the New Editor Experiences research. The work is in its very early stages, but we’d like to hear from people with ideas on the subject—particularly if you have experience supporting or training new contributors.
Map improvements 2018 [More information]
- Maps using Maplink and Mapframe functions now include an extra zoom level (level 19). This is part of the Kartographer Improvements, the number one request of the 2017 Community Wishlist survey. [61]

- The visual editor and 2017 wikitext editor interface is going to change for consistency. The toolbar, dialogs and menus will appear slightly bigger; some icons will look different. Content or functionality will not change. That change will apply to Structured Discussions as well. [68]

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive[edit]
G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
- updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Jigal - mother-in-law[edit]
Hi @Gnangarra: someone suggested you might be able to help. The article Cochlospermum fraseri talks about the mother-in-law tree. I am trying to pin down the language/languages/language-group in which jigal is mother-in-law, Clearly some mob from the Kimberley. But how wide is the usage and is there documentation?? - @MargaretRDonald: the mother in law tree is Lysiphyllum cunninghamii the Goolarabooloo and Djibarr Djibarr people which are both part of the language group Nyulnyulan languages are from the broome area, Western Kimberley where it appears to be in use. I'd start with contacting the Language/Indigenous centres in Broome as the most likely origin maybe Kununurra to see if its used further east, you may also find it spelt djigal or tjigal in language lists. I have been editing the wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysiphyllum_cunninghamii which is locally (how local?) called the jigal or mother-in-law tree. I was hoping you might point me to some written resource (either on the web or as a published paper document) which indicates which language groups use this word for mother-in-law, and if there are other aboriginal names for the tree (documented somewhere) I would be most grateful for the information.
(If you check out the article you'll see what level of information is necessary....)

Guideline and policy news
- An RfC about the deletion of drafts closed with a consensus to change the wording of WP:NMFD. Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
- A request for comment closed with a consensus that the {{promising draft}} template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.
Technical news
- Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
- Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon (
) in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates. - IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June). This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. - After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Wikipedia.
- Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.

- The WMF Anti-Harassment Tools team is seeking input on the second set of wireframes for the Special:Block redesign that will introduce partial blocks. The new functionality will allow you to block a user from editing a specific set of pages, pages in a category, a namespace, and for specific actions such as moving pages and uploading files.

Guideline and policy news
- Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.
Technical news
- Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
- Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says
Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example isarticle_textwhich is nowpage_title. - Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is
page_age.
Arbitration
- The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of Checkuser and Oversight appointments. The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. The deadline to submit an application is 23:59 UTC, 12 September, and the candidates that move forward will be published on-wiki for community comments on 18 September.

- Following a request for comment, the process for appointing interface administrators has been established. Currently only existing admins can request these rights, while a new RfC has begun on whether it should be available to non-admins.
- There is an open request for comment on Meta regarding the creation a new user group for global edit filter management.
Technical news
- Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Wikipedia and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
- The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.

Arbitration
- The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
- The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
- Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
- Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.

- A request for comment determined that non-administrators will not be able to request interface admin access.
- A request for comment is in progress to determine whether the Mediation Committee should be closed and marked as historical.
- A village pump discussion has been ongoing about whether the proposed deletion policy (PROD) should be clarified or amended.
- A request for comment is in progress to determine whether pending changes protection should be applied automatically to today's featured article (TFA) in order to mitigate a recent trend of severe image vandalism.
Technical news
- Partial blocks is now available for testing on the Test Wikipedia. The new functionality allows you to block users from editing specific pages. Bugs may exist and can be reported on the local talk page or on Meta. A discussion regarding deployment to English Wikipedia will be started by community liaisons sometime in the near future.
- A user script is now available to quickly review unblock requests.
- The 2019 Community Wishlist Survey is now accepting new proposals until November 11, 2018. The results of this survey will determine what software the Wikimedia Foundation's Community Tech team will work on next year. Voting on the proposals will take place from November 16 to November 30, 2018. Specifically, there is a proposal category for admins and stewards that may be of interest.
Arbitration
- Eligible editors will be invited to nominate themselves as candidates in the 2018 Arbitration Committee Elections starting on November 4 until November 13. Voting will begin on November 19 and last until December 2.
- The Arbitration Committee's email address has changed to arbcom-en
wikimedia.org. Other email lists, such as functionaries-en and clerks-l, remain unchanged.

Hello, Gnangarra. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Guideline and policy news
- Following a request for comment, the Mediation Committee is now closed and will no longer be accepting case requests.
- A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
- A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".
- A proposal has been made to temporarily restrict editing of the Main Page to interface administrators in order to mitigate the impact of compromised accounts.
Technical news
- Administrators and bureaucrats can no longer unblock themselves unless they placed the block initially. This change has been implemented globally. See also this ongoing village pump discussion (permalink).
- To complement the aforementioned change, blocked administrators will soon have the ability to block the administrator that placed their block to mitigate the possibility of a compromised administrator account blocking all other active administrators.
- Since deployment of Partial blocks on Test Wikipedia, several bugs were identified. Most of them are now fixed. Administrators are encouraged to test the new deployment and report new bugs on Phabricator or leave feedback on the Project's talk page. You can request administrator access on the Test Wiki here.
Arbitration
- Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee Elections is open to eligible editors until Monday 23:59, 3 December 2018. Please review the candidates and, if you wish to do so, submit your choices on the voting page.
Miscellaneous
- In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
- Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

- Shock Brigade Harvester Boris (Raymond Arritt) passed away on 14 November 2018. Boris joined Wikipedia as Raymond arritt on 8 May 2006 and was an administrator from 30 July 2007 to 2 June 2008.

We have two requests for community members:
- Now that data is coming in for the welcome survey, we are planning how to use that data to personalize the newcomer's first day. See our current thoughts here, and join the conversation here.
- Try out the help panel's interactive prototype, and read about how we're planning to roll it out, and post any thoughts or reactions here.
Two Growth team projects have been deployed (detailed updates here)
- Personalized first day (welcome survey) was deployed on November 20 on both Czech and Korean Wikipedias.
- The survey is now being shown to half of new users (A/B test). Responses are being recorded in the database. We'll report on initial results during December.
- We are planning to test a second version of the survey, called "Variation C", which we think will maximize the number of users who complete the survey and stay on the wiki.
- The original objective of this project was to give newcomers the materials they need to achieve their goals, and so now we are currently planning how we will use the information collected in the welcome survey to personalize the newcomer's experience. We hope community members will read our current thinking and join the conversation here. Some of the plans we are considering include:
- Making it easy for newcomers to see editing activity around the topic areas in which they indicated that they're interested.
- Connecting interested newcomers to experienced editors.
- Surfacing the help content most relevant to the reason for which the newcomers created their accounts.
- Understanding first day (EditorJourney) was deployed on November 15 on both Czech and Korean Wikipedias. It has been done after a longer security review and final testing than expected. Data is now being recorded for all new users on those wikis, and we've been auditing the data and preparing to make initial reports during December. Stay tuned for the next newsletter!
Help panel is under construction
- Focus on help desk (help panel) is planned to be deployed during the week of January 7 on both Czech and Korean Wikipedias.
- This interactive prototype is the best way to see the design and wording in the feature.
- We ran live user tests on the prototype, with results posted here.
- In addition to giving the ability to ask a question, the help panel will also contain a set of links to existing help content. Our ambassadors on Czech and Korean Wikipedias are determining the right initial set of most helpful links in this task.
- We encourage community members to try out the prototype and read about the rules for who will get the feature, and add any thoughts to this discussion.

- @Polar115: Noting your response The subject is not written independent of the author as it was discovered by the author, [69] the subject is clearly a case of WP:Too soon. By that I mean that the subject should be verifiable by Independent Secondary sources where Celalettin isnt the author. I'll also refer you to en.Wikipedia's policy on Conflict of Interest as it appears you are a student with a connection to Celalettin, based on discussions between you and @AngusWOOF:. As you will note that I didnt formally reject the draft a second time and left just a comment because it is possible that you may have access to an independent source not written by Celalettin covering the discovery. @Gnangarra I do not know the student, nor have I ever met the student. I am only a senior employee of the same university of which he has now left and completed. In physics, it may be 20 years before this is re-studied however it is not required as it withstood the gauntlet of peer review, and for a new phenomena in this day and age that is near impossible. This did and was published. Considering that clearly the phenomenon is only used for military purposes, I think it is near impossible that there will be another reference in an unclassified journal. In my opinion, quantum mechanics students need to be aware of the phenomenon so as to progress the understanding of the Copenhagen interpretation which this clearly defies. Considering it is a published document, I think it would be unethical to reject the article based of these trivial issues you have raised considering the significance of it. There is no conflict of interest as I have not even met the student - I joined the university as he left, and as I teach quantum mechanics, it is important to give credit to the author of a phenomena that we teach about. It is not too soon, as the phenomenon has been agreed to exist under peer review - there is no further action required in terms of whether or not it exists - even the equation is provided. Your comments were all taken on board and the article was changed based on all of them which sculpted the article to what it is now. - @Polar115: the issue of sourcing hasn't been addressed, if as you say you are a fellow professor at the same university teaching about the subject then you will have third party materials that reference the work. The issue is being WP:Too soon its topic that according to the sources has been published only 14 days ago. It needs just one Independent third party source not written by Celalettin to reference the work. An ARC report, or University press release, even a bio blurb from where Celalettin works now that supports the statement It was developed by Australian quantum physicist candidate Metin Celalettin.[1] is all it needs. I've scoured the Victoria University web site which is where this source[70] says he works, I cant find the person mentioned nor can I find and media releases about the work, nor even an publications on the VU list of publications. Gnangarra It is notable work, but because it have past both university peer review AND journal peer review it is notable if a student get naming rights to a new equation. But Gnangarra @gnangarra it is not the student that is the issue, it is the physical phenonema which is a. verifiable, and b. published. Why do you keep referring back to the student. Plus on his website he discussed his creation of the tunnel. If I removed reference to the student being the developer at this point would that make a different, even though his name is on the documents.
Don't you think these are such trivial issues for something that is so "notable" it is on par with the photoelectric effect. I sam flabbergasted that approving this is even an issue. It even mentions his co-author as Dr Horace King who is on the Victoria University website, proving that he was a student there... so what is the real problem, as this is a phenomena that is going to be awarded some day

The other thing is we need a description and an explanation for what Celalettin has found. Without naming the phenomenon like he has,it will have less exposure when it is one of the most significant findings in quantum observation we have so far. I could as Horace to have him create the Quantum Observation page if he wishes to

- Notability is a non-negotiable requirement of Wikipedia the information you have provided fails to meet our criteria, even though it has passed scientific peer review its dissemination hasnt yet been sufficient to meet our requirements. You personally have indicated that its unlike to do so in the short term because of its use and restrictions placed on it for security reasons. As for the K's notability can be established easily because of notoriety, gossip, and prodigious commentary, all of that doesnt happen with most new scientific discoveries. It's publicly published - no restrictions placed on it at all which makes me think you haven't even looked, I said Celalettin didn't want his face on the uni website. It is the equivalent of the photoelectric effect on steel to a gas so it is a huge discovery, and this is so huge that hi firm is getting government tenders where he openly (not classified) discusses the tunnel as his tool. The gossip around the university RE this tunnel has been profound. I have removed him being referred to as a physicist, however can put him up on the university website, however this site was to be a surprise for him
Also, notability is relative. Notable to who? Kim Kardashian... then no. Notable to the science community?? Yes. I had a conversation with the dean of physics for the University of Buffalo U.S about the Celalettin-Tunnel yesterday and she'd heard of it - Liesl Folks.
It's a relative term that makes no sense. This is a real phenomena where Celalettin was given naming rights to the equation that was peer reviewed, and looking up Horace King confirms he was a physics student at Victotis University. Lets just publish it??? It will link in to so many other phenomena - I'll work on it myself.

That is a shame. Because if you were a scientist you'd know that what you've just suggested has already occurred. And I think this is a big problem with Wikipedia. Scientific articles' merit are judged by non-scientists, else you'd know that 3 professors around the globe had to agree to its existence prior to publishing it

Hey, I was about to make a fool of myself, intending to revert your reversal over at Batavia (ship). Already feeling quite smug while looking up a source to back me up with regard to grammar, I discovered "Indigenous" is, in fact, often capitalized. So thanks I guess, haha. I notice your swift reversal-reversal probably had something to do with the editor in question's apparent inclination towards dubious and racially motived edits. The thing is, I wouldn't've assumed that, and I just as easily would've reverted you. The last thing I'd want to do is to tell you how to go about editing Wikipedia, but perhaps in cases like these it's best to leave a short edit summary? - sorry I did initially but swapped to using the Undo function as there were a lot of them to fix. I guess there are a lot more out there to be addressed, working with Indigenous contributors is one area I've spent a lot of time that which seam so insignificant are actually driving people away.
