The Tea Leaf - Issue Six

Hi! Welcome to the sixth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse serves over 700 new editors in six months on Wikipedia! Since February 27, 741 new editors have participated at the Teahouse. The Q&A board and the guest intro pages are more active than ever.
A lovely little teahouse nestled in Germany from Wiki Loves Monuments
  • Automatic invites are doing the trick: 50% more new editors visiting each week. Ever since HostBot's automated invite trial phase began we've seen a boost in new editor participation. Automating a baseline set of invitations also allows Teahouse hosts to focus on serving hot cups of help to guests, instead of spending countless hours inviting.
  • Guests to the Teahouse continue to edit more & interact more with other community members than non-Teahouse guests according to six month metrics. Teahouse guests make more than twice the article edits and edit more talk pages than other new editors.
  • New host process implemented which encourages anyone to get started as a Teahouse host in a few easy steps. Stop by the hosts page and become a Teahouse host today!
  • Host lounge renovations nearing completion. Working closely with Teahouse hosts, we've made some major renovations to the Teahouse Host Lounge - the main hangout and resource space for hosts. Learn more about the improvements here.

As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

Welcome! Yay! You're a host!

Hi! John from Idegon, thanks for becoming a host and all you do for Wikipedia! You've probably checked out the host lounge and the helpful stuff you can find there, I just wanted to remind you in case there are other ways you'd like to be involved. Best! heather walls (talk) 05:16, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

Tony Cascio

I restored the Tony Cascio line on Hamilton because I found a reference in the MLS player profile that says he led his team in goals both junior and senior year AND was the kicker on the state championship football team. Raymie (tc) 15:27, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

What is needed is a reference that ties him to the high school directly. When you find it, it would be better if you added the info and reference to his article, not the high schools, and added him back then. Gtwfan52 (talk) 16:03, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
Should have made this clearer: you need to click the About tab on the given reference. There's a few sentences on being at Hamilton. Raymie (tc) 19:34, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
OKay! I added the info into his article and re-added him as a notable to Hamilton. Case Closed. Happy editing! Gtwfan52 (talk) 20:06, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for September 10

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Hamilton High School (Chandler, Arizona), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page MLS (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Self-deportation

See the discussion on my talk page, at WP:NORN, the article's talk page, and [1]. I'm off for the day but others need to discuss this with the editor in any case, I don't want him/her to think it's just me. Thanks. Dougweller (talk) 06:13, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

I started that discussion on the page because that is where it seems most appropriate. I was just going to delete the section and let the cards fall where they may and discuss that, but after tagging it, I think it is more effective to leave it til discussion works through. Feel free to join in. Gtwfan52 (talk) 06:22, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I see Dennis has dealt with it. Dougweller (talk) 08:38, 16 September 2012 (UTC)
I was hoping to try to engage the editor in some dialogue to see if he was actually capable of getting past his POV pushing, but that will have to wait for another day.Gtwfan52 (talk) 08:50, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

Actually, I think he probably inadvertently copied the speedy. Made my job that much easier—since it had been thrice recreated, I had to salt it. You want a source? Why don't you click thru the link and see that Larry had a sex change and is calling himself Lana now. Don't call something vandalism without doing the due diligence. If anyone was being a vandal, you were that vandal. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.212.6.114 (talk) 03:07, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

Are you a moron, stubborn, or both? The link connects to another Wikipedia entry with sources cited throughout the article including "In July 2012, Lana made her public debut as a woman, in a video discussing the creative process behind Cloud Atlas." Whether Lana had a sex change or not is irrelevant. Everything including his/her IMDB page refers to as Lana. Stop editing pages if you're not going to do any fact checking yourself. You're the one vandalizing legitimate updates. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.212.6.114 (talk) 08:09, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

Patronizing commentary

Hi Gtwfan52,

You should know that your comments on my user page were very uncivil, rude, and insulting to me. You may have a perspective to discuss (your analogy to Walmart is amusing, if ingenuous) but it is difficult for me to engage with it when you attack my attempts to resolve disputes in such a high-handed and arrogant fashion about what is or is not appropriate at this open-source site where all cultures are respected. As I see it, it is not your place to proffer disciplinary injunctions in the form of moral imperatives on another's talkpage. You may be a Christian who bases your moral outrage on a subset of interpretations regarding ancient Bronze Age and Iron Age texts, but I do not hold your moralism to be relevant nor applicable and I do believe it may be adversely affecting the way you are interacting with new-comers (you are being needlessly authoritarian and moralistic in your attempts to explain what you think should or should not be). Your opinion is noted and appreciated for what it is, an opinion, but if you'd like to have a thoughtful discussion of the implications of your opinions, you will have to cease commentary such as, "Your conduct with the other editor in this dispute was deplorable. You owe him an apology and you should strike the insults you posted."

Junjunone (talk) 03:05, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

You have the temerity to call your comments "helpful" when I explicitly explained how they were not? I'm done with you as well. Junjunone (talk) 13:38, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

I rather like the irony of Junjunone saying "needlessly authoritarian" above :) And again many thanks for trying to explain to him he was out of line. Aarghdvaark (talk) 08:16, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
I have been following the progress of things at that page loosely, and have also glanced at some of the other places he has edited. I really hold no hope of him getting any better, and am sure that one day it will end up at AN/I. At that time I will add his actions here to the mix. Dissing a man's religious beliefs is way beyond just simply uncivil. Pls let me know if and when you take it there.Gtwfan52 (talk) 19:22, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

The Olive Branch: A Dispute Resolution Newsletter (Issue #2)

This edition The Olive Branch is focusing on a 2nd dispute resolution RfC. Two significant proposals have been made. Below we describe the background and recent progress and detail those proposals. Please review them and follow the link at the bottom to comment at the RfC. We need your input!

View the full newsletter
Background

Until late 2003, Jimmy Wales was the arbiter in all major disputes. After the Mediation Committee and the Arbitration Committee were founded, Wales delegated his roles of dispute resolution to these bodies. In addition to these committees, the community has developed a number of informal processes of dispute resolution. At its peak, over 17 dispute resolution venues existed. Disputes were submitted in each venue in a different way.

Due to the complexity of Wikipedia dispute resolution, members of the community were surveyed in April 2012 about their experiences with dispute resolution. In general, the community believes that dispute resolution is too hard to use and is divided among too many venues. Many respondents also reported their experience with dispute resolution had suffered due to a shortage of volunteers and backlogging, which may be due to the disparate nature of the process.

An evaluation of dispute resolution forums was made in May this year, in which data on response and resolution time, as well as success rates, was collated. This data is here.

Progress so far
Stage one of the dispute resolution noticeboard request form. Here, participants fill out a request through a form, instead of through wikitext, making it easier for them to use, but also imposing word restrictions so volunteers can review the dispute in a timely manner.

Leading off from the survey in April and the evaluation in May, several changes to dispute resolution noticeboard (DRN) were proposed. Rather than using a wikitext template to bring disputes to DRN, editors used a new javascript form. This form was simpler to use, but also standardised the format of submissions and applied a word limit so that DRN volunteers could more easily review disputes. A template to summarise, and a robot to maintain the noticeboard, were also created.

As a result of these changes, volunteers responded to disputes in a third of the time, and resolved them 60% faster when compared to May. Successful resolution of disputes increased by 17%. Submissions were 25% shorter by word count.(see Dispute Resolution Noticeboard Statistics - August compared to May)

Outside of DRN other simplification has taken place. The Mediation Cabal was closed in August, and Wikiquette assistance was closed in September. Nevertheless, around fifteen different forums still exist for the resolution of Wikipedia disputes.

Proposed changes

Given the success of the past efforts at DR reform, the current RFC proposes we implement:

1) A submission gadget for every DR venue tailored to the unique needs of that forum.

2) A universal dispute resolution wizard, accessible from Wikipedia:Dispute resolution.

  • This wizard would ask a series of structured questions about the nature of the dispute.
  • It would then determine to which dispute resolution venue a dispute should be sent.
  • If the user agrees with the wizard's selection, s/he would then be asked a series of questions about the details of the dispute (for example, the usernames of the involved editors).
  • The wizard would then submit a request for dispute resolution to the selected venue, in that venue's required format (using the logic of each venue's specialized form, as in proposal #1). The wizard would not suggest a venue which the user has already identified in answer to a question like "What other steps of dispute resolution have you tried?".
  • Similar to the way the DRN request form operates, this would be enabled for all users. A user could still file a request for dispute resolution manually if they so desired.
  • Coding such a wizard would be complex, but the DRN gadget would be used as an outline.
  • Once the universal request form is ready (coded by those who helped create the DRN request form) the community will be asked to try out and give feedback on the wizard. The wizard's logic in deciding the scope and requirements of each venue would be open to change by the community at any time.

3) Additionally, we're seeking any ideas on how we can attract and retain more dispute resolution volunteers.

Please share your thoughts at the RfC.

False River Academy edit warring

Perhaps you should familiarize yourself with WP:3RR, which you appear to be dangerously close to violating, if not already. Sf46 (talk) 03:35, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

In response to your post on my page, all that is required to be in violation is to make 3 reverts on the same page with 24 hours. So again, I am asking you to please discontinue the edit warring. Continuing to delete nearly every spread of information I add to an article can not be construed as AGF especially in light of me advising you that your edits surely appear to be edit warring, and appear to be in violation of 3RR. Sf46 (talk) 04:12, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
3RR applies to reverting the same edit 3 times in 24 hours. I have tried to engage you on the talk page and did so in the beginning. You have continued to make unsourced additions. Like I said, take me to the 3RR noticeboard if you have a problem. Otherwise, drop it. Gtwfan52 (talk) 04:30, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
Since I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to engage in any type of edit war, I am going to drop this situation for now. At this point I am straining very hard to continue to assume good faith on your part. But please also understand that if the edit warring on your part continues, the noticeboard will be my very first stop. You keep making the statement that unsourced info is being added, yet you deleted at least one sourced statement, stating that the source wasn't good enough. Instead of deleting info, how about adding a source needed or disputed tag like I did (which you also deleted). My point is if you truly are interested in making this article better (and working together), how about adding to the article, not subtracting from it. Sf46 (talk) 05:30, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
a large amount of the stuff that I took out was either POV (The seg. acadamy thing) or cruft. (Class lists) I was trying to find a source for the football champ just like you. I have no interest in trying to support your POV editing. As I said much earlier, you have been here plenty long enough to know that you need a reference if you are going to make a claim. State football champ is definitely a claim. The article isn't written for people in your parish or your state it is written for the world. And as I said, feel free to take this to a noticeboard. In fact, I would encourage you to. You don't seem to want to hear about what the problems with your edits were so I would be more than happy to have someone in authority tell you.Gtwfan52 (talk) 05:43, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
  • 3RR is often interpreted to mean 3 reverts of any edits in 24 hours, not just the same material, per whether involving the same or different material each time section of WP:3RR. You have to really careful with that, as a minority of admins will also blind block (ie: no warning first) on the 4th, a practice that I am against but is technically allowed. Not worried about the past, but will take a look at the material. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 06:07, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
Please do. I am reasonably sure that I have done nothing wrong and another set of eyes on the article would be good. All of his edits were replacing material that had been removed by an experienced school article editor several days ago, except the first one, where he removed the project tag for Wikiproject Discrimination, a POV he has been pushing on this article for three years. Gtwfan52 (talk) 06:17, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
I think you are right on the content and have said so, but 3RR doesn't differentiate between correct and incorrect reverts only the count, so I would just be careful. Not all of us admins are warm, fuzzy teddy bears when it comes to enforcement ;) Dennis Brown - © Join WER 06:48, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
Noted. Thank you as always. The whole long term POV thing kinda set me off, but I will be more aware and step away sooner. BTW, your friend is back at Hendrix. Gtwfan52 (talk) 06:59, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
Since it is at AFD, I hate to punish someone or labor the issue unnecessarily. He isn't trying to break any rules, he just doesn't understand them. The "awards" and all might be fluff, but he did source them, in a way, so I will leave it up to the good judgement of those participating at the AFD. Concord Academy

FWIW - when you reverted Concord Academy today, I had already restored your edits to the Concord Academy article to remove non-notable alumni. The effect of your revert was essentially to restore the edits by 173.166.41.167 (talk · contribs) which I had removed. Most of those changes are either unsupported by references or directly contradicted by the Concord Academy web site. —Tim Pierce (talk) 21:00, 29 September 2012 (UTC)
