Responding to RFCs

Remember that RFCs are part of Dispute Resolution and at times may take place in a heated environment. Please take a look at the relevant RFC page before responding and be sure that you are willing and able to enter that environment and contribute to making the discussion a calm and productive one focussed on the content issue at hand. Greetings! You have been randomly selected to receive an invitation to participate in the request for comment on Talk:WalkerThrough. Should you wish to respond to the invitation, your contribution to this discussion will be very much appreciated! However, please note that your input will carry no greater weight than anyone else's: remember that an RFC aims to reach a reasoned consensus position, and is not a vote. In support of that, your contribution should focus on thoughtful evaluation of the issues and available evidence, and provide further relevant evidence if possible.

An explanation

I would like to know what is going on with this intrusive banner on my talk page. My internet address and provider are private, all edits can be traced, so kindly remove this tag from my page. I have done all I can to edit within the limits that have been set on the Big Brother 2011 due to an edit war I did not start. See my latest edits to confirm this fact.86.176.153.183 (talk) 23:21, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

See WP:OUTING. IP addresses are NOT private, although some addresses registered to governmental entities are considered sensitive. The registry information of a given IP address is readily and freely available using any WHOIS tool. The tool most often used by Wikipedia only reports the ISP and top-level registrar, although additional information may be provided if the IP or IP range is registered to an educational institution. Checkusers have additional tools available, but are restricted to using them in certain specific instances and circumstances. As to your editing, I note there is already a discussion regarding this at WP:ANI, and all communication regarding that matter should remain there. AN/I comment

I noticed this but am having trouble finding the incivility you refer to. Is there a diff you could post, there or here? --John (talk) 16:28, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

I was specifically looking at comments by Timeshifter, primarily "Do some admins practice at being annoying? Are you trying to alienate editors? Do you care?", and to a lesser extent, "Please stop wasting our time.", both from early on in the AfD. The latter is borderline at best, but the former is a comment that IMO is non-collegial and nonconstructive at best. I'll stipulate that WP:NPA can be very subjective in interpretation. My personal view is that the entire AfD is symptomatic of how polarized American politics have become over the past couple of decades, but I'm trying not to bring my personal views into what's already become a volatile mixture. --Alan the Roving Ambassador (User:N5iln) (talk) 16:38, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
Those were pretty unhelpful. I find for AN/I it's important to post diffs for misconduct one is seeking admin input on, or otherwise to just let it go. I agree with your other comments. --John (talk) 20:50, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi N5iln. You participated in Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#Standard of review for non admin closes, which was snowball closed. A subsection of the discussion has been created. Hi, do you have admin power to semi-protect National Transitional Council and Syrian National Council? -Kudzu1 (talk) 15:24, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi, are you trying to prevent accuracy in encyclopedic content regarding Jewish influence in the mineral resource industrial history of South Africa? Would you be so kind as to reveal why you had decided to make such an edit? Are you anti-Black? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.147.235.216 (talk) 19:10, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

No, but I AM anti-personal attack, and that's how I see your comment here. You are therefore officially warned against such. As to why I reverted your edit, did you read my edit summary? Or the message I left you? --Alan the Roving Ambassador (User:N5iln) (talk) 23:59, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

Memorial Day

Was not happy about having my edits arbitrarily deleted for no good reason. I have to provide a citation to prove there are parades on Memorial Day? Are you kidding me? I give up. This sort of nonsense is why I stopped writing articles on a regular basis a long time ago. -- Ghost2011 (talk) 17:30, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

"A long time ago"? You have a total of 86 edits in nine months. By what user name did you edit previously? Also, the reversion was not due to the statement regarding parades. It was due to the claim of Memorial Day being the "unofficial start to the planting season". I for one have never heard that claim before. --Alan the Roving Ambassador (User:N5iln) (talk) 18:04, 5 November 2011 (UTC)
For years I wrote extensively as an anonymous contributor. Wrote about 80 percent of these articles: Mystery film, American International Pictures, Ed Wood, Route 66 (TV series), Irving Klaw, Bettie Page, Outlaw biker film, East side kids, I Spy, Women in prison film, Nazi exploitation, Beach party film, Honey West, et al.
I quit writing long pieces after a number of lazy, ham-handed Wikipedia employees started wiping out huge blocks of valid text at the push of a button over some picky little detail they did not want to bother with. Deleting is not editing. This "throwing the baby out with the bath water" approach drove me away. If some detail is questionable then simply cut or recast it. As a copy editor, I used to do that every day for over a decade. It's called editing. Maybe it's some kind of inane policy, but Wikipedia seems to employ "deleters", not editors, who manage to get by doing as little work as humanly possible.
As far as the article goes, millions of people from New England to the Midwest (i.e., regions that have cold winters) regard Memorial Day weekend as the traditional time for preparing and/or planting their vegetable gardens, etc. And most garden supply and plant stores heavily advertise specials and sales for that weekend. It's common knowledge, for crying out loud, for most of the country. But apparently, that's not good enough here. So, before giving this up as a bad job, I'll make one last attempt to add some bits to the article by omitting the offending item. -- Ghost2011 (talk) 23:51, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

The people who are currently voting on the deletion of the 2012 page are clearly not understanding the scope of why it ended up being nominated in the first place. Svetovid

You recently reverted one of my edits to the page. To be honest, I'm not familiar with proper procedure for editing on Wikipedia or what proper decorum for these kinds of conversations are, so you'll have to excuse me if this is not reaching you in an appropriate medium. However, as much as I might not know about Wikipedia, I know about Svetovid. You see, for several years I have been a devout member of a local organization devoted to Slavic heritage in particular to Slavic mythology and worship. We have recreated the great temple and every year pour Pabst Blue Ribbon into the horn - no longer mead - hence my edit, which I fear may have been misconstrued as vandalism. As I have mentioned, I am not very literate in the workings of Wikipedia, so my edit may have not found its place in the precise location where it is most appropriate, however I firmly believe it remains valid and deserves mention on the Svetovid page.

Respectfully Yours — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.57.55.143 (talk) 21:55, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

The problem with this is that what you're describing doesn't appear in a reliable source; in fact, since you're relying on your own experiences, it would be considered original research. As such, it's not usable in a Wikipedia article. --Alan the Roving Ambassador (User:N5iln) (talk) 15:36, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

On-Line Ambassador Help with starting a new wikipedia page

Hello, I am a graduate student at the University of Washington. I am in the PBAF 564 Housing and Social Policy course, which has a wikipedia page.

I was told that you would be a good resource to help me get started with setting up a new page. The page will be about housing quality and health outcomes. In general, people who live in poor conditions have negative health outcomes.

I'd like to know what the steps are top creating a new page. Thank you Djadonis206 (talk) 18:54, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Alan: All the students in my class have created drafts of either new pages or edits to current entries. If you are able to take a look and comment, that would be great. islamism is derogatory while islamist is not

Islamism is a concocted term by various Orientalists, neo cons and Israelis. Islamists on the other hand which started out as a derogatory term has now changed and become normative for describing Islamic activists esp in Arab spring revolutions in Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia. This redirection to Islamism should be stopped and islamist should have its own page along with links to the islamic activists and movements involved in the Arab spring revolutions. For example islamist.com seems to be a pro islamist news web site — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wholetruth123 (talkcontribs) 02:09, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
