Depriciated template announcment

I just had to say that adding the {{{importance}}} and {{{class}}} tags in the "depreciated templates" warnings was brilliant. That will save a lot of time that would have been spent re-assessing articles after the changeover. --Arctic Gnome (talk • contribs) 03:47, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

When I tried that with {{PPAP}}, I was reprimanded for adding so many unassessed articles to WP:CANADA at once. I'm not sure how such template re-directs differ from someone using AWB to change the templates themselves, but I didn't feel it was worth the argument. --Arctic Gnome (talk • contribs) 05:55, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Depreciated sounds better to me (not as abrupt as obsolete). As for the wiktionary definitions, I'd trust Webster more, see deprecate vs. depreciate. --Qyd 20:18, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

We will likely end up agreeing to disagree, but in editing the template, aren't you stating that the template is obsolete? Depreciate is used more often in monetary contexts, and template itself is not devalued. I don't claim to be an English expert, just a hobbyist, and it seems to fit better next to the precedents I've seen. Davewho2 20:30, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

map of Alberta

There is an error on the map of Alberta. The lake named Sylvan Lake is in fact Pigeon Lake and Sylvan Lake is not shown. Pigeon Lake does indeed flow into the Battle River, but Sylvan Lake is farther south and feeds into the Red Deer River. DAB terms

You seem to have ably foiled my efforts to improve the disambiguation with some of the articles on cities in Alberta.

My edits were in line with WP:DAB and WP:DABMOS, and some were an attempt to fix malplaced disambiguation pages. Not every settlement needs the provincial DAB term to be used after it, especially when there is no other similarly named article on WP. And if there is, then the page without "(disambiguation)" is the proper DAB page, and it should not redirect to the page with the provincial disambiguation. We do have a particular convention at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (settlements)#Canada, and had many discussions regarding this subject( see Wikipedia talk:Canadian Wikipedians' notice board#City naming convention poll, Wikipedia:Canadian wikipedians' notice board/discussion/Archive 8#City naming convention poll 2). Reverts

The pages edited on Calgary Transit have factually inaccurate information. Please stop reverting these changes. I work for Calgary Transit, and my sources are internal documents/discussions that are not available to the general public on the internet. Somerset Bridlewood has been renamed "Somerset" and the location is on Shawville Gate. It is not on MacLeod Trail. Besides, as I remember, I've reverted some of your edits that totally screwed up the pages, such as this. Calgary revision

I can understand removing the "million-plus" template I commented out, but removing CMA's-by-size? That's a pretty common one. Did you over-remove there? Franamax 04:57, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

I think not. Calgary (the city) is not even listed in that navbox. And I can't really see a good use or encyclopedic reason to {{Census metropolitan areas by size}}. Sorry. --Qyd 15:11, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

Not to get into a big thing about this, but "Calgary,AB" is listed there - yes, it's not the city itself, but all the CMA's listed do have that template. I think what the template does is answer the question "what are the biggest cities in Canada?" - that is encyclopedic and I don't see it answered anywhere else. Of course we can argue about what is a "city" but StatsCan has already answered that - they count by the CMA. So encyclopedically - where do I go to find out if there's a bigger city in Canada than Calgary? Franamax 22:39, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

I think those questions are much better answered by the ranking in the infobox (which contains links to List of the 100 largest cities in Canada by population and List of the 100 largest metropolitan areas in Canada. The actual rank is also given in the infobox). The navbox in question is just a list without ranks. If you feel it has encyclopedic value, feel free to add it back. Although, if it belongs anywhere, it's on the CMA pages that are linked in the template, not in related pages. Cheers. --Qyd 22:45, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

Assesments for {{WikiProject Canada}}

I would add the class and importance ratings to articles but I don't have a clue what there importance is. The reason why I wanted the Arctic Cordillera to be reassessed was because when it was rated it was only a small article. But because the article is much larger now, I wanted a reassess (I'm the one who created the article). Much of my ratings are mountain and volcano articles. Black Tusk 04:10, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

I am a member of the EPCOR CENTRE for Performing Arts' Marketing & Communications team and I had recently made some corrections to our Wikipedia page. I noticed that you had also made some revisions -- thanks for your help with noting necessary citations and cleaning up the 'weasel words' and the page. I have gone in and made the appropriate citations.

I realize you may have been wary about some earlier changes as well. We are actually using 'EPCOR CENTRE' in uppercase for branding purposes. As we are named after our corporate sponsor, we often get confused with that company (we do receive some of their phone calls), so this is an actual marketing effort to distinguish ourselves from them. Changing article assessment

Hi Qyd, I'd like to request that if you change an article's assessment (like at John McLoughlin), you indicate it in the edit summary, and/or explain your reason on the talk page. We've been using those fairly heavily at Wikiproject Oregon, and I think a have a fair amount of consensus behind most of the prominent articles, so I think I'm not alone in wanting to see if things change. The quality standard (class) should be the same across wikipedia. In all fairness, the John McLoughlin article falls somewhere between Start and B as for as I can judge. There were two banners assessing it as Start, and one assessing it as B, so I just went with the majority. If you feel it's B, please change all banners to that effect (this kind of consistency would help with Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Work via Wikiprojects). Road naming convention

On December 6, you moved some road articles from X to X (City). Is there a guideline somewhere for this? I thought that it's not necessary to disambiguate unless there's a road of the same name elsewhere. –Pomte 08:15, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

Also, a spam message: To even begin improving the quality of our 1200+ stubs, it has been suggested that WikiProject Canada Roads forms consensus to delete all its navigational templates. location map

Would it be possible to have a map of Saskatchewan for the location map template Template:Location_map_Saskatchewan based on that you used for your maps? The latter seems to be more detailed than the current one. Käptn Weltall (talk) 17:50, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

As I explained in Template talk:Location map Saskatchewan, an equal area map is not accurate when used with {{Location map}}. On the other hand, an orthographic map looks bad for large areas such as most Canadian Provinces (but Image:Census divisions SK.png or Image:Blank map Saskatchewan.svg would work with Location map). It's the reason why we used manual dot placement (using image_dot_map in {{Infobox Settlement}}) in pages about BC and AB communities. Ontario uses dotty maps (specific maps for each community). Markham Road

You have incorrectly moved Markham Road to Markham Road (Markham, Ontario). This is the road within the City of Toronto that leads to Markham. The Town of Markham is part of York Region and that section of road is York Regional Road 68. The reason for the move was the disambiguation notice at the top of the article, which says "This article is about Markham Road in Markham, Ontario and Toronto. Yukon-geo-stub

While I agree that the consensus appears to be keep, the sfd notice needs to remain until the discussion is closed. Also, while well meaning, {{asbox}} is not particularly well liked by the stub sorting project, as it suffers from feature creep out the wazoo. I've reverted back your change and when the time comes to end the discussion all that needs be done is delete the line with "|-" and the line above it. WP:SCL

Hello, Qyd ...

Please allow me to introduce myself ... for the past six months, I have been working on some four-step Protocols for deletion warnings like Warn-inc ... I'm contacting you today because I have Burnaby North Secondary School (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) on my watchlist, and noticed your recent contribution on the discussion page ... I am not considering the article for possible deletion, but I marked it several months ago to identify Some Other Editor who had both an interest in Wikipedia:Notability (schools) and more knowledge about the subject than myself.

I was wondering if you thought that there might be some utility to adding a Warn-school cloned from Warn-academic (see Warn-templates for what I'm talking about) ... WP:SCL not a A7 speedy delete candidate, but neither is WP:PROF or WP:FICTION ... still, this could be handy for a {{Db-reason}}, a {{Prod}}, or an AfD of a non-notable school, just like with "Academics" and "Fiction" ... I could easily add "School" as one of the notability guidelines recognized by the {{Warn-article}} and {{Warn-editor}} templates to generate the WP:SCL shortcut.

The Grand

OK, thanks, I think you're right about the disambiguator needing to be in brackets... and have now updated all the pages I worked on this morning which link to it, to avoid double redirects etc. The article as I found it needed quite a bit of Wikification, as well as a new name! I think the history piece is worth being more than just one ref, as it's a mine of info for anyone interested in the history of the building, so will replace it as Further reading. Auto location Map for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador

Hi, you do excellent work by making these maps available. I would appreciate it very much if you could help me incorporate the map in the settlement infobox. Moncton

Hi, just a little note about the map on the Moncton page, I made that specifically for the Moncton page, as it is nice and well designed as is the map for Vancouver for reference, (a featured article). I find a map with roads and some features more informative than a subdivision map. I would change the Vancouver map too (incidentally, I drew that myself), but can't find a better one. I begun implementing {{Location map New Brunswick}} to NB communities, so it would provide some province wide consistency. There's also the advantage of using a single graphic for all pages, instead of going into the dotty map syndrome. Template:Subdivisions of Quebec

Hi, I was wondering what the rationale was for removing the links to the other provincial templates. It seems useful for navigating, but maybe there's a rule about not linking to the template space that you know about. Joeldl (talk) 01:57, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

The issue has been brought up a number of times (there were discussions at the village pump and at tfd about this). The general opinion was that articles should not contain links outside the main article space, not to template space, user space, wikipedia space, not even direct links to category space (other than the category listings from the bottom). If you think that links to other provinces subdivisions should appear on every QC page, you should link the specific lists, not the templates. However, {{Subdivisions of Quebec}} does have links to the other subdivision templates in its documentation. Cheers. --Qyd (talk) 02:24, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

White Pass

I whole-heartedly disagree with your "Importance rating of Low" on White Pass

Wikis' definition is as follows:

Subject is not particularly notable or significant even within the field of Alaska, and may have been included primarily to achieve comprehensive coverage of another topic.

This does not represent the history of the White Pass at all. Numerous books have been written on the White Pass by notable historians as it was the second most popular and used trails during Klondike Gold Rush as well as the reason the city of Skagway, Alaska was born. You need to change that rating.

Using Google and typing in "White Pass"would have easily shown you just how important the White Pass was, and still is. In the future please engage the most basic research before taking upon yourself to decide the importance level of an article. Thank you. Soapy (talk) 01:59, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

"Reckless" was not my choice of word, but rather is quoted by wikipedia in the two links you posted WP:BOLD and WP:BRD.

Though the boldness of contributors like you is one of Wikipedia's most precious assets, it is important that contributors do not edit recklessly. "Being Bold" does not excuse a disregard for verifiability, neutrality, and the other guidelines/policies that comprise the five pillars of Wikipedia.

However, after looking over the links I never saw your quote listed there, "Even making mistakes get things done." In my opinion that seems to be a very poor attitude for an encyclopedia to take. Can you post the link where that quote comes from? I so far have not found any write-ups on hurrying assessments at the cost of correctness. It seem logical that a correct assessment is of more importance than the placement, otherwise why even have them. The same as placing a birth date on a biography page. I modified the syntax in {{Infobox Islands}} to allow a custom map image (the entire {{Location map Newfoundland}} code would have to go under the parameter locator map, while map_custom must be set to yes. I tried in in Bell Island:

Proposal to merge St. Joseph Seminary with St. Joseph's College

"I'm against merging the two articles as they are very distinct organizations. Beyond sharing the same name and being Catholic institutions, their fundamental goals and objectives, in fact their whole raison d'etre, is quite different. St. Joseph Seminary (Edmonton, AB) and Newman Theological College are for the formation of those desiring to enter into the priesthood. St. Joseph's College on the other hand, is the Catholic presence at the University of Alberta and its primary purpose is student faith development and enrichment. These goals are obviously quite different, as are the institutions themselves."

It's a common misunderstanding in Edmonton when referring to a St. Joe's because there is a High School, College, Basilica and Seminary all with the same name. Pin position: trial and error pretty much. Yes, any map would work, I chose that one because I liked the colors (neutral ones go better with the red pog). I'm not at all happy with the choices you've made with the Coquitlam disambiguation page. If people do a search on "Coquitlam", the city of 120,000 people is almost certainly what they're looking for, not the other things which are named after the city. Peple probably look for the city, indeed, but the city and the lake were named after the river (the river was the firts Coquitlam, "smalls like fish"). Yes, I also think that Coquitlam should redirect to Coquitlam, British Columbia, and the dab should go to Coquitlam (disambiguation), with a {{redirect}} on top of Coquitlam, British Columbia. List of communities in the Northwest Territories

I just did a major update to the list, making it similar to the List of communities in Nunavut. One thing I changed was the governance types. For example it's not clear from the references that Behchoko, Northwest Territories is a First Nations government. I noticed that Tli Cho says "...the chiefs must be Tłįchǫ, though anyone may run for councillor and vote." If that is true then it's possible that some non-Aboriginal people could be sitting on the council. So I used the Community Governance Data List in the list. I wonder if first nations governments are somehow regulated by the Indian Act (meaning that administretion is legislated on a federal level), or maybe it's different in the territories. Thanks. I'm not too familiar with the newer systems of government they use in the First Nations communities. I only ever lived in Holman/Ulukhaktok. The one I was looking at, Behchoko, has 100+ non natives out of 1,800 people. That appears to be an odd one though because it's a government administrative centre and like here has a larger non-native population. I see the other three Tlicho communities are much smaller and appear to have a non-native population that would be made up of the usual, teachers, nurses and RCMP. I don't think it does. I'm not even sure it applies to inuit communities at all.

Template:Subdivisions of Quebec

Hi,

I noticed you added lots of cities. I was wondering if maybe you'd agree to just have those at the level of a census agglomeration or bigger.

Well.. it's because the province of Quebec decided to incorporate all towns and cities under the same classification as "ville". I suppose we could delete that group altogether, as it's hardly usable for navigation, and instead enable the regional group, in the case of Asbestos it would be {{Subdivisions of Quebec|region=Estrie}} (what it does is it combines the provincial and the regional navboxes). --Qyd (talk) 02:05, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

I suppose combining them wouldn't be too bad, but it might be a bit confusing, because people might not think to go to the big Quebec template to navigate to some small local town. If they see a regional or RCM template it is more likely to occur to them. So I'd probably lean towards keeping them separate. Eventually, I think what we should perhaps have is an optional list of RCMs in the Subdivisions of Quebec template. Getting more opinions is never bad, but I honestly see no harm in merging the templates, on the contrary. Every page that contains the regional navbox would need the provincial one too, and having one instead of two navboxes looks much better. The regional navboxes could be converted to redirect ({{Estrie}} would be {{Subdivisions of Quebec|region=Estrie}}). The regional templates are completely contained in the provincial one already, no additional coding would be necessary. It would only have to be implemented (easy to do with AWB). Assessment & banner use

Hi Qyd,

I have a question concerning the assessment templates and their use within wikiproject Canada. I've been working on some of the pages on St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, and had thought to add the WikiProject Canada and N&L project banners, but also included the assessments for the articles (example: Talk:The Battery (St. John's)) It occured to me that likely there is an accepted practice for this and I thought I'd ask how to have pages that should be under a specific project included and assessed.

{{WikiProject Canada}} tends to be be used for everything and anything related to Canada, so the more articles are tagged, the better. Adding sub-project switches makes it easier to categorize articles (I'm waiting for the day when the wikipedia software will be able to cross-reference categories). There are guidelines for quality and importance rating at Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada/Assessment. Available switches are listed at Template:WikiProject Canada/doc. Anyone may tag and assess articles (if something turns out wrong, don't worry, someone will fix it). Gulf Islands map

This map should label and show a line for Rosario Strait, because of the role that plays in the Pig War - it passes to the east of Orcas, through the word "Cypress".

Labeling Haro Strait is less important (at least for the Pig War) since it can be inferred from the international border.

It would also be good to improve the island labeling, though it's difficult in the limited space - the word "Cypress" spreads across three islands, with Cypress actually the one to the east, while the two on the west are Blakely (to the north) and Decatur (to the south).

Definitely need to correct "Lumni" - should be "Lummi".

Map of Ontario

That's the problem actually, this is a equal area map, while {{Location map}} and pushpin_map from {{Infobox settlement}} use orthographic projection maps. Admittedly, equal area maps are much better looking when it comes to large surfaces such as that of a Canadian province, where the earth curvature is obvious. However, we're stuck with orthographic if we are to use the mentioned automatic templates. Could you produce an orthographic Ontario svg image? (it could be compressed on either direction, but the meridians have to be parallel and vertical).

Image:Census divisions ON.png was the only orthographic map I found on commons:Category:Maps of Ontario, so the only one usable for {{Location map Ontario}}. If we would have a better map that would suite this template, a template conversion would update all articles that use it (that's the advantage of using a template instead of dotty maps). --Qyd (talk) 15:35, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

AWB query

I have used AWB only for list comparer to do a snapshot of what is tagged and what category, such as what is in both SK WP and WP CA communities, but now the list maker only goes to 500 and so items beginning a to f can be compared but not the rest. Is there a way to start the listing at Fairlight, Saskatchewan for example, and keep going? I don't do the edits to the pages with AWB yet, but the comparer is neat. Highway 40 map appears to be incorrect

The image Alberta-roads-40.png, found on the Alberta Highway 40 article, is wrong. You have Coleman situated approximately where Highway 541 forks off 40 east of Longview, but it's actually on Highway 3 in the Crowsnest, or about 100 km further south. Importance of MLAs

Hey Qyd - I've been going through and expanding/sourcing the articles for members of the 26th Alberta Legislative Assembly. This has included adding the relevant project banners and, where necessary, updating the quality scale gradings (often from stub to start, or occasionally B). Proceeding alphabetically, I'm on the Bs now, and I see you rated Guy Boutilier as being of mid-importance on the importance scale. I have no particular thoughts on whether this is right or wrong, but I've been rating MLAs as being of low importance thus far (although there will obviously be exceptions with Premiers and their ilk). I'm quite happy to rate articles on whatever basis you like, since it's necessarily arbitrary and since you seem to do about 90% of the Wikiproject Alberta maintenance stuff anyway; I'd just like to hear your thoughts on what this basis should be. Alberta Provincial Parks

Just to let you know that I reverted your edit to Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park because, since March 12, 2008, the Alberta governing body (Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture) has been split into the Ministry of Tourism, Parks and Recreation and the Ministry of Culture and Community Spirit. Edmonton Map

Out of curiousity, what determines when a road is highlighted in red? It doesn't seem to be either the provincial highway network, or freeways in the city...

In any case, would it be possible to update the map? The southeast Anthony Henday Drive opened recently from Calgary Trail (Highway 2) to Salsibury corner (Highway 14).

Red roads: it's what I found marked as expressways or arterial roads on a Garmin mapset. I used statcan data for the roads, and that doesn't even have the ring road; I used a GPS track for the SW section of Henday, and I don't have anything for the SE ring. --Qyd (talk) 05:24, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

I looked online a little, and the best I could find was at Mapquest, where the road isn't labeled, but it at least the road shows up in the satelite photos. For the exact route, I did find this on the construction company's website that lays out the route, but it probably hard to export.

FYI: I also stumbled across this map on the City of Edmonton's website that lays out what is officially designated an "arterial" road.
