Reading the case file I noticed this comment from you

You miss the context: that Jack spent two years editing productively and without creating socks to bother you. His recent edits have been born of the frustration of finding that even after those two years, there's no chance of returning to good standing.

I'm grateful that you felt the need to inform me about Jack's former interactions with you, but you can rest assured that I've done my research myself and I'm fully aware of your history.

collapsing table/ gallery

I figured if anyone knew you would... In your work with tables, specifically tables with photos, have you found a way or tried to make one that would collapse unless selected by a mouse click? I am wondering if a table of images could be made but only viewed if the user makes an action. Similar to the way the navigation boxes collapse at the bottom of the Oxygen toxicity article. Thoughts? That would be perfect! Let me do some digging for a few more photos for the article and I'll let you know when I am BOLD enough to try it. Access is not the first concern, I am tired of the complaints over "gross" images that do serve a purpose. It shows up on my watchlist daily since I added refs to the article. Time to try something new and stop the occasional edit wars. New residents next week so it may be a little while.

using tables for image display

Hey man. Hope work is settling down. But no worries. I am still kinda stuck on the basic concept of what we did in painted turtle (all four species, top and bottom, using a table). I find that your table is much nicer way to show things than the default gallery. Also that organizing images in some fashion (not just pretty pics, poked into text) can be a functional way of showing information. Not a brainstorm or anything and really something people do on Powerpoint all the time. But Wiki still does not do that much in general. Just think we should keep looking for ways to layout pictures better.

FYI, I put the Ames photos back in for Featured Pic. It's actually one where the default gallery works OK, since the shorts are so "tall". But take a look (and mess with if you want).

That's an odd interaction between <span> and {{ubl}} that I hadn't seen before. Simplest work-around while I sort out a proper solution is to use wiki-markup (*) to create a bulleted list. That's not so bad, as the table seems to have plenty of room for bullet points. If you want the table to extend across the page, just set the width of the table to 100%. I've done both of those for you to see if you like how it looks. The reason the previous version was full-width was that each column had a width specified as a percentage - although I always prefer to let the browser sort that out, as I can never account for all the different possible combinations of screen width, resolution and browser. YMMV. It's getting a bit late here (3 am BST), so I might not respond to more probs until the morning. Hyperbaric Medicine

First, thanks for all the fine work you do as a dedicated Wikipedian. The effort you and Gene Hobbs have expended over the years to maintain Wikipedia standards on this page is much appreciated.

I'm hoping to help, and see a number of places where the content and citations don't appear to meet Wikipedia Medicine standards. But I'm hoping improvements can be consensus-based and wanted to reach out to you, Gene, and any other genuine contributors before making any (big) changes.

It seemed uncontroversial to update the links the the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society to reflect their new website structure, so I've done that. (Note that while they're resolving some DNS issues with their service provider the conventional "www.uhms.org" URL re-maps to "membership.uhms.org".) These citations now link to the current pages.

I see a few significant issues with the current content and would appreciate the opportunity to review them with those of you with a standing involvement with the page. As a (very) new Wikipedian I'm still finding my way around and learning the ropes, so I'd appreciate your indulgence in working with me to continue this discussion directly.

Thanks, RexxS, I appreciate the advice (and the e-mail redaction). I don't have a problem being bold, but view consensus before implementation as being somewhat more efficient. With regard to hyperbaric medicine in the US, there are legal and public health issues to consider in forming the consensus, and collaboration in defending the consensus will be more effective in deterring crassly commercial agendas. I'd appreciate some insight into the regulatory landscape in the UK, if you're able to provide it, and also the opportunity to conduct a discussion somewhere other than the internet equivalent of a hotel lobby, if you're willing. Would spanning the record title for shutouts (under "Career pitching records"), runs, or extra-base hits (under "Single-season batting records") in List of Florida Marlins team records across two rows for the two records cause any accessibility issues? In theory, the answer should be 'No', because assistive technology should be able work out what the appropriate cell should be when it's part of a rowspan. In practice, it doesn't seem to work out so well, and major websites like the US Inland Revenue Service advise their web designers to avoid rowspan and colspan in case they violate Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Here's a quote from http://www.irs.gov/irm/part2/irm_02-025-005.html - section 2.25.5.4.5.7 Data Tables, Technical Requirements (g) and (h):

• The scope attribute also works with some (but not all) assistive technology in tables that use "colspan" or "rowspan" attributes in table header or data cells."

As you can see, they recognise problems with some but not all assistive technology. It not just a question of disability, either. You might also have a look at User:RexxS/Accessibility for how a text-only browser can come unstuck with rowspans - and that would affect users who have primitive computers and poor internet connections, such as you might find in less developed countries.

Frankly, I'd always advise against using rowspan just for a couple of cells, especially row headers. The inconvenience of duplicating data is, IMHO, far outweighed by the potential to mess other things up, and keeping things simple is a cornerstone of good design. Sorry, it's not a straight answer, but these issues have a habit of being more complicated than they might seem at first glance. Hope that helps, --RexxS (talk) 20:22, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Template:Hash tag

This needs to be fixed to remove the white background from the hash tag. This is indeed better than just using the keyboard hash tag because it allow for alt text to display on screen readers in the line the person is reading. List of Manchester United F.C. seasons

I experienced a sorting problems in List of Manchester United F.C. seasons. To me, the only column that sorted correctly is the "Season". Even the "Goals" which should have simple numeric sorting was sorted incorrectly. Is this only happened to me? Well, pretty much as expected, removing the rowspans in the headers allows the table to sort properly. I've also removed the bare endashes from cells as they messed up the sorting as well. Jobs left to do:

• Fix the inability of {{ubl}} to allow different coloured backgrounds and update 'Europe': 1968, 1991, 1999, 2008;
• Use ubl to replace the html breaks in 'Top goalscorer';
• Apply sort keys throughout to make the sort sensible;

Perhaps you should nominate a few delegates who are as generous with their time and knowledge as you so I don't have to pester you or get others to pester you on my behalf...! I think it is in the places I indicated. Semantically, those are lists of competitions, players, etc. so really should be marked up as lists, although we don't want a bullet point (ugly and takes up space in a table). The upside is that screen readers treat it exactly as a list (which is what Graham and others expect it to be); while the alternative (using an html <br /> element) produces the pauses associated with new lines (not preferred behaviour). An additional bonus is that the structure of the page becomes semantically correct, which ought to offer some advantages to re-users of our content who may convert into non-html formats. It's only small improvements, and I wouldn't force them on others, but I feel it does represent best practice.

As for delegating, well, I'm painfully aware that I'm not doing as much routine reviewing as I feel I ought, so I feel obliged to help when someone asks. Nevertheless, after around 30 years in education, I'm still in the habit of try to illustrate what I'm doing. Hopefully anybody tracking through my edits on List of Manchester United F.C. seasons can see what I did, and can probably replicate the processes on other lists. At least I'm hoping so before the RLRC queue gets too clogged up. It's a job that wants doing, so I'm not too dismayed. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 23:12, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi RexxS, it's about the list above, I have updated the article and fixed all issues, exemple, if you sorted numbers, (goals, pts, etc..), 9 will be above 10, and 2 in the area of the 20's, not to forget 115 will not be above 99 but above 11. now its fixed, used template sort

I also edited the postion so 1st in second divsion will not be in the same place as 1st in first division but under last position first division had, also the divisions name, I have read from above and previous issues. Can you tell me what you think of it now?, is it good? or should it be touched again.

Yes, you've done a great job, Honor. I'm glad you found the {{sort}} template, and sorry I didn't point you to it last night, but I was rather exhausted by the time I finished - I bet you were too! You haven't broken anything, of course, although you might want to check if those align=center attributes are actually needed as the whole table is centre-aligned because of the declaration in the first line. By the way, if you ever need to sort other things in tables (full names, dates, etc.), there are specific templates to do just that and they are listed at the bottom of {{sort}}. I am hugely grateful (as I'm sure all of the FL folks are) for the work you've done on that list. Accessibility review request for current FL

Hi Rexx. Seeing as you're the go-to editor for when WP:ACCESS issues appear at FLC, I have a favor to ask you. List of New York Giants seasons, an FL I worked on a while back, was recently tagged for FLRC as part of the recent spree, though it was never listed at WP:FLRC and the tag was removed by another editor. If you get time, I would greatly appreciate a quick accessibility review, which would help ensure that the list meets 2011 standards. It's an older list, but I did put row and col scopes in; however, this is the first list I've done this for and I don't know if I did it correctly. Hardcoded HTML font elements and color types were other things questioned, and I'm no expert on either. I'd be thankful for whatever help you can offer. Hi Giants! I found a bit of time at last. As I prefer to do, rather than talk, I've gone ahead and made some tweaks to improve accessibility and markup towards modern standards. Hopefully you can see from each edit what I did. I'm afraid I've opened out the spacing quite a bit - it just helps me with my old eyes to spot row changes, etc. in the wikitext, but although they make it easier to read in the edit window, such spacing changes make no difference to the rendered text, so you can happily ignore them. The only thing I've not found time for is to check if the background colours meet WCAG 2.0 AA standards. You could check that at Snook's Colour Contrast Check, if you get a chance before I do. Thank you for that. I hope I wasn't out of line, but I respect RexxS as well. So I would be offended if someone called him an "incorrigible madman". That does not impress me as a comment on content. Because the intent was not clear, and the user who posted it was an administrator, I did AGF and not revert. At the same time, if it was an attack, I find it more egregious having come from an administrator. I hadn't seen the policy you linked until now. I must admit I am more confused after reading it, than enlightened. I can't imagine overlooking an attack as productive, especially as they progress towards requiring oversight. Hey RexxS. This symbol: ¤ is used commonly throughout a number of featured lists (and current candidates). I don't even know what it's called but I wondered if screen-readers can deal with it? If not, (and I've asked this before, I know), is there a list somewhere I can easily refer to so that I can make alternative suggestions to people? Hi TRM, I'm fine thanks - went to the Wiki-meet in Manchester yesterday and enjoyed meeting the folks again. I met JamesBWatson for the first time and it turned out we were at Uni almost contemporaneously - what a small Wiki-world!

Anyway, I'd seriously doubt that the ¤ symbol is likely to be read by any screen readers – like you, I don't even know how it would be pronounced. To be certain, you could ask Graham87 how JAWS copes with it. Unfortunately, I don't know of any list of what screen-readers can deal with, probably because screen-readers differ from each other in their implementations. What I can say for certain is that JAWS can read all of the usual characters available on a standard UK keyboard (with the possible exceptions of ¬ and ¦).

So I'd recommend:

• * # + and ^

as first choice. Then perhaps:

• ! £ $ % &

(although you'd have to be certain they could not be confused with the normal use of those symbols). In addition we have the templates for:

• {{†}} {{‡}} {{↑}} and {{↓}} – producing † ‡ ↑ and ↓

which are useful in sports tables for captain, wicket-keeper, promoted and relegated, etc. If somebody needs more than that many symbols for a key, I might be asking them to have another think about how they are structuring their data. Of course, it is always possible to replace all of the key symbols with reference notes, which can be made to work just as well and are accessible automatically.

Looking for an expert on Scuba Diving

My name is Martin Walfisz and I represent a startup company called Planeto (http://planeto.com). We’re currently building a new type of knowledge network where anyone joining the community can be tested on different topics and be awarded expert certificates.

We’re right in the process of launching a small, invite-only beta (complete with bugs and quirks ;) to a few hundred users across the world, and are initially looking for people with existing expertise on a number of different topics.

There are only a handful of really active scuba divers on Wikipedia: Gene Hobbs is my usual collaborator, runs the Rubicon Research Repository and is often very busy, but you could ask him. Anthony Appleyard and Steve Harris have been around longer than I have, and there's Legis and Ex nihil with whom I've collaborated on some diving articles. Marking a renamed image as deleted

When you get a chance, have a look at this diff where your bot comments out the lead image of Federazione Italiana Attività Subacquee as if it had been deleted. In fact, File:Fias.png was merely renamed to File:Federazione Italiana Attività Subacquee logo.png last week, leaving a redirect in place. The bot ought not to be blanking from articles any images that have not been deleted, as they work just as well with the redirect. Cheers, --RexxS (talk) 01:09, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Indeed, it seems Fastily deleted the redirect at 23:04, 9 October 2011; Your bot properly cleaned up at 00:06, 10 October 2011; Fastily undeleted the redirect at 01:27, 10 October 2011 (leaving no trace of the delete/undelete); I properly notified you at 01:09, 10 October 2011; then Fastily re-deleted it at 04:14, 10 October 2011. A strange sequence of events that made both of us appear wrong to the other.

I would be interested to hear your thoughts though, on whether the bot's commenting out of a file is the best option when a file has been renamed? Ideally, it would spot the renaming and update the filename in the article, but I understand that would take quite a bit more programming and testing. Errm, it seems that it was the same as before G lit the candles. But now I've wrapped up the archives, bookmarks and RfAs in their own divs and set them inside a table to give some spacing. I've increased the page width now, as it was in fact too narrow (quite pointlessly, as there's plenty of room on my screen). My socks may have been messing with such things while I was away, I suppose. (Pod! Is that you, slinking off?) Anyway, pragmatically, I can't say I think it's comely yet, even though stuff isn't overlapping any more, which is good. You know, to my simple-mindedness, it seemed originally as if merely removing the candle images didn't work, then all I'd have to do would be to revert to an earlier, candle-less version, which had looked good, and surely would again. But I was completely wrong. So I can't even look at an earlier version to see what the layout was like… and it's fading in memory. :-( I think the bookmarks thing appeared top right, pretty much on top of the boxtop/boxbottom box, with the archives immediately (but spaciously) to its left, and the self-updating RFA report thing centred below them, by itself. That would give Spumoni the Flutterer a central position, as is proper, and a good big cage. I think that's how it was. All these three on one vertical line will necessarily be tight and squashed.
