Backlog Elimination Drive Has Begun

Hello, I just wanted to take a moment and announce that the July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive has started, and will run for a month. Thanks for signing up. There's a special prize for most edits on the first day, in case you've got high ambitions. Enjoy! ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 04:05, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks! I really don't know much I'll actually able be able to do =/ as I'll be away most of July.  – Tommy [message] 09:27, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks!

Thanks for the star and kind words, and most of all for following through on the case. I believe that you voted correctly. Gwen Gale declined to vote "did not pass" for good and cogent reasons of her own, and if you had also not done so, the recall would not have gone through, which I think would have left a lot of people feeling that the system had not worked. So you did the Wikipedia proud, in my opinion. Herostratus (talk) 02:43, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Thank you, that means a lot. And I don't blame her. All the best  – td2010 [message] 02:57, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Uh...

...why did you just replace your userpage with the flag of Spain? –dffgd 21:20, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Because Spain is awesome. Claro!  – td2010 [message] 22:08, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
World Cup? –dffgd 22:09, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
Whoa...1 minute later? Funny time to check my watchlist. –dffgd 22:10, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
Huh? Yea there is a place called the Plaza Mayor and there were TVs everywhere all over Salamanca... it was like their version of the superbowl.  – td2010 [message] 22:16, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
To clarify, I was referring to replying 1 minute after you replied. –dffgd 00:06, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Ah okay. lol. Yea i put the Spanish flag on my user page because I'm in Spain... it's amazing (:  – td2010 [message] 09:53, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
By coincidence, I was watching a World Cup game around the time you did that...Spain vs. Paraguay, and Spain won, and advanced. And I don't usually watch WC games. :) –dffgd 13:11, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

IRC

I think you use IRC. Wondering if you can connect to the server. I'm getting an error. N419BH 15:02, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

I do and yes I can :) (as of right now) -Tommy! [message] 15:04, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Yo no hablo español (Have fun in Spain btw). I'll have to try IRC when my summer job is over. N419BH 15:16, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Claro. I'll help you when you're rdy. Just send a message whenever, or ask User talk:TTTSNB... he's better than I am. Cheers -Tommy! [message] 15:19, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) You changed your sig again? Thanks for clarifying that habla/hablo thing...I'd been wondering about that for a while. And if you get to correct N419BH's grammar, I get to correct your formatting ;) you used one too many colons. And no hablo español (or Español, is it capitalized?). –dffgd 15:37, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
lol. I was wondering when my trusty stalker would comment. Yes, im very undecided :D... pero I think this one will stay... and español is not capitalized (and neither are days or the week, months.... mostly just names of people and stores/brands). hablo is a verb, not an adjective and therefore does not change according to gender. Hasta luego -Tommy! [message] 15:40, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
() Yeah, I stalk a lot...probably because not much goes on at my talk page. It's fun though :) –dffgd 16:51, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Need your help with a possible WP:BLP issue

Hi, Tommy. I need the timely assistance of a more experienced editor and I saw that you had made some recent edits. With this edit and this edit of the Bozdar article, 210.2.181.244 (talk · contribs) has added what appears to be a cel phone number. I've reverted the edits and posted warnings on the editor's talk page, however, I'm not sure if the specific edits should be delete/hidden to protect the cel phone's owner and, if so, how to go about requesting that. Thanks, in advance. -- Bgpaulus (talk) 19:42, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I've raised the issue at WP:ANI. However, I've since been informed that these kinds of issues should be directed to oversight WP:RFO. N419BH 19:48, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) They've been removed now (by HJ Mitchell). –dffgd 19:57, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick response, everyone (and sorry for hijacking your talk page for this, Tommy!). Just so I'm clear on the correct protocol, if I have another situation like this in the future, then I should post a request for the deletion of a specific revision of an article to WP:RFO and not WP:ANI, right? I assume that the same also applies to e-mail and snail-mail addresses. Cheers! -- Bgpaulus (talk) 20:33, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
You've got it. Go to WP:RFO and follow the instructions to e-mail them. N419BH 20:56, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your help everyone -Tommy! [message] 21:53, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Last revision by IP 117.254.243.72 added content that is totally unrelevant to the page, contains gross POV and is not sufficiently qualified by relevant sources. It looks like a pamphlet more than an entry for an encyclopedia. I think that restoring version as edited by Bender235 at 14:08, 18 May 2010 is the best thing to do. Best regards.

checking. -Tommy! [message]
Done... I don't see any major problems that makes me believe the text you removed should not be there. You might want to use the discussion page of the article to explain in more detail your reasons. Regards -Tommy! [message] 16:43, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

one problem

Hi Tommy, I have one problem. I created page Boban Marjanović(player who joined PBC CSKA Moscow recently), but I don't know how to place him in CSKA Moscow roster, there is some Boban Marjanovć(in red word, which mean that wiki don't have page/article about him).

So that is the problem, someone wrong spelled his name when put him. Can you place Boban Marjanović(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boban_Marjanovi%C4%87) in CSKA's Roster(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PBC_CSKA_Moscow)?

I really don't know how. Thanks!

Got it. :) You can redirect pages to another by using #REDIRECT [[ ]] with the page title in the brackets. cheers -Tommy! [message] 17:32, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
And there was a spelling error in the template. Templates are anything in {{ }} (not [[ ]]). To edit a template, search wikipedia with Template: with the title after the colon. Good luck -Tommy! [message] 17:36, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks man!

player picture

As you may know, I am new here. How to place player picture on his page(Boban Marjanović), I read everywhere but can't find out! Can you explain me and if you can, place this picture(http://www.eurocupbasketball.com/rs/19749/53bdc9d6-4bfa-4956-b91d-3326b4985f24/907/rglang/en-US/filename/boban-marjanovic-hemofarm-stada-final-eight-turin-2009.jpg) on Boban's page. Thanks for everything!

Pictures must be uploaded into Wikipedia. You cannot violate any copyright warnings, ie, do not use a random picture off Google. See WP:Copyright to learn about the copyright policy, and then go here: Special:Upload to actually upload a photo. -Tommy! [message] 17:45, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
That picture looks like it has a watermark, ie, some type of property to it. I'd advise against using that pic. -Tommy! [message] 17:48, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Your welcome (no, not "you're welcome")

I'm assuming you use a template for your welcomes such as AirWolf10's. Just letting you know it has a typo. –dffgd 19:54, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

There's no typo.. -Tommy! [message]
"You are welcome" Hence "You're welcome" is correct. N419BH 20:51, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm confused. you're welcome isn't in the template. -Tommy! [message] 20:53, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
idk, I was just saying it's "You're" not "Your"...no idea where it is in the template. N419BH 20:55, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
Um, the section name is talking about "your welcome" (i.e. your welcome template). I added that in because it sounded like I was saying "You're welcome" to you. Anyway, see the quote for the typo. –dffgd 21:00, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
...Witty. N419BH 21:02, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm still confused. -Tommy! [message]
Forget the whole section name thing. There's a typo in your welcome template. It's in the quoted part. Now do you understand? –dffgd 21:11, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
Nope. You can just fix it, i dont care. User:Tommy2010/welcome -Tommy! [message] 21:17, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Apologies - Defense

Hi there TOMMY, VASCO from Portugal here,

Excuse me for my antics which led to your message to my anon IP (see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:217.129.65.5), i am facing serious anger management problems which need to be addressed.

However - and note that it does not justify my antics - this user Zombie433 has been treating WP like his personal website for far too long, not replying to ANY messages that are not sent in German, removing messages people sent, and refusing to engage in any "group" conversation whatsoever (please see this discussion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Football#User:Zombie433).

Again, i am sorry for any incovenience, keep up the good work - --Vasco Amaral (talk) 19:57, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Thank you; replied on your talk. -Tommy! [message] 08:45, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Reminder

Hi! This message is just a friendly reminder that you signed up to participate in the GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive. I noticed that you haven't logged a single copy edit yet. We'd love to see you participate! I see you are not able to edit much lately, but the drive runs three more weeks so there's still plenty of time to earn barnstars. Thanks! --Diannaa (Talk) 22:19, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Ill try to do some today when I get free wifi. I'm sorry. :/ -Tommy! [message] 06:23, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

I understand that you would be offended, at the time I had only seen an editor revert an edit that I didn't think was blatant vandalism as Colbert holds a doctorate from Knox College. The doctorate is in fine arts - indeed he has the postnomials D.F.A. as a result. Don't worry about it, sometime these things happen, I'm sure that the vast majority of your edits are constructive and revert real vandalism. Originally that detail was supposed to have been in the first line of the article(leading me to be flabbergasted!), but was removed by anon editing a while back... Happy Editing! Outback the koala (talk)

Understood. But I never said that edit was vandalism. If I had used regular Rollback, then it's safe to assume I thought it was; Twinkle, I almost never use it for vandalism. Thanks -Tommy! [message] 08:20, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

An outside opinion requested

Can you review the differences between these two versions [1] and make whatever edits are appropriate to bring the article closer to our standards. Thanks! Active Banana (talk) 17:52, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

done. Just some advice, you might want to tone down the warnings on new users/IPs. -Tommy! [message] 20:12, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

GOCE July 2010 backlog elimination drive chart

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update.

Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue.

Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board.

The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated.

This newsletter was prepared for the GOCE by Diannaa (Talk), S Masters (talk), and The Raptor Let's talk.

Hi Tommy2010!

Hey Tommy2010, I noticed you have been patrolling for vandalism. Keep up the good work, but I notice some of your vandalism removals are not complete; there might be lingering vandalism made by earlier edits by the vandal or by others which do not get reverted. If you sense that the earlier revision looks vandalised, that means that there might be earlier vandalism not removed and you should use the history function of Huggle to search for the latest clean revision. Have a good day! Optakeover(Talk) 11:14, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. I try to when I see it, I may miss some. Keep up the good work as well. -Tommy! [message] 11:16, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Hello :)

Hi Tommy,

In fact that's not the first time a contributor of the English Wikipedia let a kind message on my talk page, welcoming me and invinting me to create an account, but I'm afraid that would be useless : I am French and my English is quite bad. With the pending system English-speaking contributors can correct me if I make grammatical faults or anything ... So I think I cannot contribute enough to English Wikipedia to deserve an account ... But maybe I'm wrong ... What do you think about it ? 92.156.228.104 (talk) 17:42, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Xerography vs. Electrophotography

First the original article refers specifically to the Xerox product:

"digital presses such as Xerox iGen3 and Xeikon presses"

This constitutes direct commercial promotion.

Second, you will not find any of the other players in this space (Canon, Kodak, HP... ) referring to the technology as "Xerography." Xerox is the only company that uses that terminology (with the obvious tie back to their corporate identity).

Refer to "American Printer" at: http://americanprinter.com/your-turn/Deprez-inkjet-72008/ or an industrial report at:

http://www.pira-international.com/the-future-of-colour-electrophotographic-printing-to-2015.aspx

This is certainly not an act of vandalism, but an attempt to use the generic, non-commercial, term for this technology.

Thank you

Noticed your comments at ANI. The IP is not actually using an edit summary. They are opening a section of the page, making an edit then saving it with the default summary. You get one every time you edit a section, see here where you did it on your talk page. Enter CBW, waits for audience applause, not a sausage. 10:49, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi Celyndell. I've made some changes, overall great job. The only thing I'd say is avoid typing ... in articles. Thanks for your contributions :) Tommy! [message] 21:49, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
In fact, I've worked on the entire article those days, for instance here is the article before I worked on it : I've had some 150 references. I think that someone should check he entire article to correct the faults, but more important is the creation of a section on Education. I think it's the only thing missing for a GA or Featured Article nomination. Could you do that ? I'm afraid it would be a too specific vocabulary for me. Celyndel (talk) 08:51, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

History of Slavery

Hi Tommy, thanks for your recent edit patrol of History of slavery. I agree with keeping the content the IP wanted deleted, but I need to let you know that what the IP is doing does not appear to be vandalism to me. The IP has a particular POV (claiming that Germanic people weren't involved), and has questioned the reliability of the sources in a discussion post on Talk:History of slavery. Perhaps the IP is being tendentious and may not be following NPOV, but that is not vandalism. Please be careful when using the word, and try to assume good faith regarding anonymous editors; the IP may believe they are improving the article and may be open to discussion. Again, thanks for keeping watch over the article.

This is vandalism. I have no idea how it could be seen otherwise; at the bare minimum, it's disruptive editing, and they got blocked for it. It was sourced, and I do AGF and it's a bit of a pet peeve when people tell me to do it, more than I already do. Thanks, Tommy! [message] 01:25, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
Sorry to touch a nerve. Absolutely, what the IP did was disruptive editing, and it's a good thing they got blocked, but that's still not vandalism. If you haven't already, I would encourage you to read the section WP:NOTVAND. Forgive me if it seems like semantics, but there is a difference between someone spraypainting Wikipedia and someone disruptively POV pushing - they're both bad, but the remedies are different. -- Joren (talk) 01:35, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
Not really. You rollback unhelpful edits, (whatever reason it may be) and warn appropriately. Easy. We throw the word "vandalism" around way too much here. Tommy! [message] 01:38, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
