Clem Hill[edit]

Hi YM. Clem Hill is slated for TFA on 19 December 2008. A busy week for WP:AUST on the main page! -- Mattinbgn\talk 04:14, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sehwag-size articles and stubs[edit]

I think, at least in terms of the mean, the Invincibles project (and the Miller and Bill Johnston article especially!) have pushed us colonials over the top of the poms in the article size Ashes. I also note that the poms have given Sehwagology a bit of a setback today as well. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 06:52, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

While I have enjoyed the article (and I have enjoyed the blog in the past), I don't know how much longer my conscience can allow me to ignore its existence! -- Mattinbgn\talk 06:54, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom[edit]

Thanks for your kind message and your support during the election. I intend staying as active as possible within Milhist - it'll be a good antidote for the crazies - if Jimbo appoints me. I suspect the agenda for the first six months or so will be reform! --ROGER DAVIES talk 10:32, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It might make you write more vigourously, like it did to me. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 05:19, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Prussian Blue[edit]

Hi, I reverted your revert of the crazy IP editor with the outrageous edit summary. It looked like a whitewash of the girls was/is afoot and I have put the article back to where it was pending some real news coverage. Cheers, CliffC (talk) 02:28, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure that's fine, I just found it a bit puzzling, at least the rationale. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 05:19, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Viet history[edit]

Dear Sir,

I've spent several years working on a new history of Vietnam. This is (in part) why I haven't done any more work on the Viet history articles that I wrote 2+ years ago. I now know some of the material that I wrote is in error, and I have given a very different slant on other articles in my book. But - I'm not done. I'm still waiting for the "Cambridge History of China - Volume 4" because I would very much like to get the current word on the one time in all of Vietnamese history that the Viet attacked China (1075).

BTW: Regarding your nice article on the Nguyen Artillery, the Trinh also built artillery but, in general, they had less cash to pay for European artillery, and (since they were on the offensive most of the time) less interest in the heavy and generally immobile cannons. I see you have a new article coming on the army of the Nguyen Lords. May I suggest that one of the best sources of information on the Nguyen Lords and their government is by the historian Li Tana titled "Nguyen Cochinchina". (War Elephants!)

best wishes,

Cglassey (talk) 05:51, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I have the LT book and it is very good. I hope that you are going to share your new work with us? YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 08:04, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mr. Yellow Monkey. I'm having a bit of trouble with somebody you seme to be acquainted with, User:Bobo192. I appreciate the work he does with cricket but I'm finding it frustrating that he will not add stub tags to stub articles he creates and in effect removing one of the most important tools we have to expand them for other editors. Worse is the fact he will not stop to explain why he insists on not using them. Please can you try to put in a word on the matter as I only have the best interest towards the articles in the long term and expansion of them in the future. If editors who go through categories expanding cricket stubs they will be missing his articles and potentially the articles could suffer for it. Articles like Charles Alexander (cricketer, born 1839) etc. The Bald One White cat 21:34, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Content drive page?[edit]

I saw from here that WP:AUS is doing a GA 200 drive? Is there a unified page about this somewhere that lists all the Australia GAs, or is Category:GA-Class Australia articles accurate that there are 179 so far? Also, does the parent cat include all the GAs listed in those subcats? If that is the case, that is an attainable goal, actually. Cirt (talk) 21:44, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, there are 179 GAs all up and all the articles in teh subcats are also in teh main cats. It would be great if you can join us. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 04:05, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It would be helpful to have a subpage off of WP:AUS with a list of them all, as sometimes categories can be dynamic and change and stuff. Content-quality-drive pages also help to focus efforts and let us see where we are in relation to the goal of the drive. See for example WP:DOH/TOPIC. Cheers, Cirt (talk) 04:10, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Added it. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 05:14, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also added a pile of GANs from WP:AWNB/A. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 03:05, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nice work. You might want to mention to people to help out/pitch in at WP:GAN by taking on some reviews of other WP:GACs higher up the queue in their respective subsections. What do you think? Cirt (talk) 03:13, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you could do that for me. I'm not active very much there since the last year and might not get much of a reception. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 03:26, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help with GA[edit]

Hi YellowMonkey. I recently improved the Australia Day article, and I was hoping you could very quickly run through it and give some informal feedback before I nominate it as a Good Article. \ / ( | ) 03:34, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I've given it a run through. I guess the level of detail will pass for GA, but I doubt it would hurt to go into more detail. It does seem to cover all the stuff I would expect, ie, history basis from 1788, and government edicts, Aboriginal objections and preferences for Anzac Day and the Aus of the Year. Also I am wondering why single quotes and double quote marks are used. Apart from that it's ok, and probably the expansion to make things safe and to lay a good foundation for further work and I've fixed some formatting. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 04:22, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a bit worried about Indymedia. Isn't that a fringe source for greenleftweekly/socialist alliance type folks with a strong polemic bent? YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 07:11, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have them cited because it simply shows that there are people that have that viewpoint. I don't think I've been bias in the text, certainly not in favour of there opinions anyway. \ / ( | ) 08:37, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure! Should've looked more closely. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 06:03, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stub tags[edit]

Thank you for your message. I guess I never considered to include stub tags on my article templates, though I will try to get used to doing so in the near future. If between then and now you find instances where an article should be so tagged where I have not done so, please do if you have the time and patience.

I guess I never really considered my articles "stubs", as such. Most of the articles I have created within the last two years, I have more or less considered "as complete as possible with the limited amount of information I'm given on the subject". I'm too used to thinking horizontally, rather than vertically, on a topic - if that makes any sense. Bobo. 02:03, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much. You are very kind. Johnlp (talk) 08:31, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PR[edit]

I have an article on peer review, before sending for its third (hopefully, last!) FAC. If would be great if you have a few minutes to spare in providing some feedback. Thanks! - Best regards, Mailer Diablo 15:44, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Season's Greetings! - Cheers, Mailer Diablo 15:55, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bl. This matter pertains to an article which I have in PR right now, and the article's title and content. I am leaving this message for two more admins to get an overall opinion. I had created an article about a year back (Aug 2007) called Mysore kingdom literature which went as a subarticle to the main FA Kingdom of Mysore which also I authored. Shortly thereafter, another user changed the name to Literature of the Kingdom of Mysore (oct 13th 2007). This title stayed for quite a while. Around Nov 7th 2008, I started to expand the article with the intent of making it a FA. Being fully aware that all the writings described in the article were written in Kannada language, I moved the article to a more appropriate Kannada literature in the Kingdom of Mysore on Nov 13th 2008. However, after significant expansion thereafter, I had covered (for context/better roundedness) some writers and poets who had lived outside the Mysore territory, but never-the-less left an indelible impact on literature within the kingdom also. To give the article an apt name, because it now covered literature in Kannada language over an area larger than just the Kingdom of Mysore, user:Michael Devore (a frequent and helpful copy editor of my articles) and I though up the name Kannada literature, 1600–1900 CE. The period 1900-2000 is normally covered under Modern Kannada literature. Since I was solely resposiblle for writing the article, I did not think it necessary to start a discussion about the name change. About this time (Dec 5th 2008), User:Fowler &fowler had started a FAR on the original FA, Kingdom of Mysore, in which this literature related article I have described was a sub-article. Fowler first insisted that the name Kannada literature in the Kingdom of Mysore must stay as is since the main article was in FAR and that some of his concerns were linked to the sub-article on literature. I pointed out to him that a FAR can't include topics outside the main FAR'ed article itself. But now he claims that the article should include literature from the period 1900-1947 (the last part of the kingdoms existance). But he does not understand that adding details of literature from the period 1900-1947 to the article breaks the "mature" modern period of Kannada literature into two pieces, 1900-1947 and 1947- 2008, which quite logically should stay as one article, and does currently (Modern Kannada literature. He has stared a thread on Talk:Kannada literature in the Kingdom of Mysore and Mattisse and Docku have supported him. I have not bothered to reply on that thread to prevent encouraging any verbose discussions that lead nowhere. So, I would like to know what your advice on the matter is. Over the last 1 year and 4 months (Aug2007- to date) I have done 99% of the edits and brought in 100% of the content. Everyone has an opinion on how to write an article and what to name an article, but I feel as the main contributor, I should be allowed to proceed with the title and content I last gave it, Kannada literature, 1600–1900 CE and let any discussions regarding title happen in the FAC with concensus. Also, the sub-article has nothing to do with the main FAR'ed article where Fowler seems to have concerns. Please advice.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 20:13, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PS:The period 1900-1950 would usually include numerous writers, far too numerous to include in the above summary style article under discusion.Dineshkannambadi (talk) 20:52, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. Yeah, I was considering Laurie Nash as a GA but I'm trying to track down the biography on him (without much success). We'll be right! I wonder if it is at my library. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 02:04, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Peripitus. Grahamec gave me your name as a recent producer of a Australian GA. Well, we're within striking distance of 200 GAs at the moment and we decided to have a go at getting to 200 by the end of the year or Australia Day, same as the 100 drive last year. Hope to see you there at WP:AWNB/A and WP:AWNB ! YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 05:33, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are you going to try Anstey Hill for FA? YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 05:33, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes and Yes - I have a couple of WPAUS articles I think I can try for GA before the end of the year (probably only on one due to the joys of work) and I hope to review Anstey Hill in the next week and get it ready for the FA fandango. I thought about driving Isaac Isaacs to GA status as I have a lot of information on him + his bio but unfortunately the book keeps on putting me to sleep - Peripitus (Talk) 01:50, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Here is one that is already GA but wasn't tagged with {{WP Australia}} - "Bart vs. Australia". Cheers, Cirt (talk) 05:09, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hope you don't mind me butting in but there was a (brief) discussion on this article at AWNB - Wikipedia:Australian Wikipedians' notice board/Archive 30#Bart vs. Australia. If consensus is different, I have no objections. -- Mattinbgn\talk 05:27, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hrm, seems only two users weighed in at that discussion. Also, Bart_vs._Australia#Reaction_in_Australia shows the episode is relevant. But I don't think it's that big of a deal. Cirt (talk) 05:34, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Really??[edit]

I was stalking around GAN and found Keith Miller in the 1946-47 Australian cricket season. One season? Really? I thought I was getting carried away with the overly-long Dwain Chambers and forthcoming Early life and athletics career of Usain Bolt. Given your seemingly endless pedigree of green circles and stars it appears I was heading in the right direction with this kind of thing after all! Ian Thorpe was my "template" for both Chambers and Bolt. I assume I can count on your input when I've got the condensed Usain Bolt at FAC? The lack of input on the Chambers FAC made my first attempt a quiet and unsuccessful affair... Sillyfolkboy (talk) 04:01, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See also Keith Miller with the Australian cricket team in England in 1948 (GAN), Keith Miller with the Australian cricket team in England in 1953, Keith Miller with the Australian cricket team in England in 1956, Ray Lindwall with the Australian cricket team in England in 1948, Arthur Morris with the Australian cricket team in England in 1948, Bill Johnston with the Australian cricket team in England in 1948. All coming soon! And a few more of the Invincibles of 1948. Basically, I wrote Keith Miller and there was about 110 kb of prose, so I had to hack it down. Thus Early life of Keith Miller, Military career of Keith Miller (both at GAN) and the articles about 46/47, 48, 53 and 56. Then I wrote the article on 1948 Ashes series and needed a fork, so Fifth Test, 1948 Ashes series (GAN). Since WP:AUS is gunning for 200GAs, and the Miller forks and the Fifth Test were pretty big already, I decided to polish them off for WP:AUS/GA. Then, as the articles for Arthur Morris, Bill Johnston (cricketer) and Ray Lindwall were FA/GA, had decently sized sections on the 1948 tour, I decided to combine them with detailed match info from the 1948 Ashes series and expand them with the other tour matches for GANs as well. I'll probably do a 1948 subarticle for Neil Harvey, Don Tallon, Bill Brown (cricketer) and Ernie Toshack as well - other 1948 Invincibles - as those ones are already GA/FA and can be mixed with the match articles. So nothing wrong from my point of view! YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 04:22, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, I'll look at Bolt and Chambers if you want. I should probably re-expand the Thorpey article into some forks like Ian Thorpe at the 2000 Summer Olympics and get some more star plundering done, as people already complained that Thorpe was long. It was 57k prose before it went to FAR and I had to fork a bit. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 04:22, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm fully aware of the pattern of behaviour! It's easy to get carried away and throw the whole kitchen sink into the article yet no sane person, ourselves excluded, would bother to read something so intensely indepth. Still, it would be such as shame to throw away interesting and perfectly encyclopaedic information...the sub-article is born. I think that the increase in number of these types shows that Wikipedia is really fulfilling the encyclopaedic trilogy of: Propaedia (Lead section), macropaedia (main article) and macropaedia (sub-article).
P.S. No rush with FACs yet. I'm waiting till I've added Chambers' biography details (released next march) and perhaps Bolty in a couple of month's time or so. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 04:46, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
