Philately WikiProject

You are right that I have not been active, either with Wikipedia or stamps, recently. Sad, but true. If there is a newsletter you post or something, perhaps I can continue to receive that as a reminder that I'm neglecting one of my favorite hobbies, in deference for real life demands. Kind Regards, Keesiewonder talk 10:53, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately there is no neswletter. There are too few of us for that, but why not just put a few of the most popular philatelic topics, such as Stamp collecting or Postage stamp, on your watch list and every now and then there will be some edits that will remind you about philately. Don't forgt to move youeself back up to the porject's active list if that is what your status is. Cheers & thanks ww2censor 13:17, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. I didn't notice the other article. I'll remove that section when I get a chance.--Moonlight Mile 08:03, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Motorcycle Review

I'm afraid a close relative got rather ill recently, so I dropped off the face of the Earth for a while. I'll see if it's up for reveiw when I get online later today, and will move it forward if possible. Many apologies. --Fritzpoll 12:35, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! How do I revert this vandalism?

Hi Ww2censor! Thanks for your message on my Talk page. U said I could ask any questions on your talk page so I'm doing so here. Could u please let me know the best way to revert vandalism using the History tab? In particular I want to edit the last change on the page Khatri by user 65.88.88.153 which has just ended up defacing the article; I have no opinion about his POV. Thanks --Amit 12:31, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Eh, I did it on my own, and I think I did it right :-| You may verify if you please. -- Amit 12:40, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As you seem to have found out, to revert from the current version to the immediately preceding one, just hit the undo button. This comment might have well been moved to the talk page for people to discuss if it bears any merit, otherwise just add a comment like "unsourced edit". You will get the hang of it soon enough, so don't be afraid to experiment, use the sandbox, use the preview to see if what you are doing looks right, especially if you are doing anything complicated, before saving. Cheers ww2censor 15:00, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
All right, thanks!! -- Amit 10:45, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

External Stamp Link

The stamp magazine link is not a primary source. In fact, it doesn't even cite primary sources, so it can't even be considered a secondary source. If you consider that a legitimate source, then http://www.famousstamps.org/famousstampsindex.htm is just as good, and actually much better because all the stamps are located on one page, and it includes the much more coverage than the stamp magazine link. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.202.106.64 (talkcontribs) (14:14, July 11, 2007)

You are correct, it is not a primary source but is a secondary source. I already responded to your concerns on the page where you started the discussion about the removal of YOUR web link. Who are you? You never even sign your edits, you do not identify yourself in any way, you don't quote any sources and you really should read the external links policy that I left on your talk page with the two linkspam warnings. Without some evidence neither you, nor your web site, can be regarded as a reliable source while a acknowledged philatelic publication can be recognised as such. Also you have a conflict of interest in this situation too. Beside that your images, in general, are of poor quality, and one of my fellow editors suggests there are errors on your site. Please do not add this link again. ww2censor 18:42, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Postage stamps of Ireland FAC

Hi -- just a note to say I saw Tony's comment at FAC, and I'll see if I can have another go at copyediting. Tony is a perfectionist, but his changes do improve the article. If I have time this weekend I'll see what I can do. In the meanwhile I'm going to leave my support in place; I think it is professional level -- perhaps my standards are just lower than Tony's. Mike Christie (talk) 15:18, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tony does seem like a perfectionist, nothing wrong with that though, but it puts a lot of pressure on. I have already done a few of his suggestions but I suspect he will pull the rest apart too. I would appreciate another person's look over again. I will deal with a few of his comments that I know I can address. TIA ww2censor 16:27, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

David Feldman (philatelist)

Hi Ww2censor. You are off to such a great start on the article David Feldman (philatelist) that it may qualify to appear on Wikipedia's Main Page under the Did you know... section. The Main Page gets about 4,000,000 hits per day and appearing on the Main Page may help bring publicity and assistance to the article. However, there is a five day from article creation window for Did you know... nominations. Before five days pass from the date the article was created and if you haven't already done so, please consider nominating the article to appear on the Main Page by posting a nomination at Did you know suggestions. If you do nominate the article for DYK, please cross out the article name on the "Good" articles proposed by bot list. Also, don't forget to keep checking back at Did you know suggestions for comments regarding your nomination. Again, great job on the article. -- Jreferee (Talk) 02:43, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Updated DYK query On July 25, 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article David Feldman (philatelist), which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Well done and do feel free to self nom in future. We definitely need more or classical high culture around the place.Blnguyen (bananabucket) 09:14, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations on the FA for Postage stamps of Ireland

File:Party.gif
Great article. Congrats. Mike Christie (talk) 03:32, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, congratulations! I'm really glad we now have a stamp FA; the first one is hardest because there is no example to copy, and little expertise in the WikiProject, so this one is really important. I was concerned at first that no one was even looking at the article to review it, but then while I've been away/busy I see it picked up a lot. Your tenacity and hard work made it happen, many thanks! Walkerma 07:04, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The ORM-D classification is unique within domestic commerce in the U.S. and is not recognized in international commerce.

Arrgh! I missed that part! Nice catch! Thanks for correcting that! Do you know anything about the UN standard markings? I'll go looking for them, but I think there might be an international version... --Mdwyer 04:59, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean by UN standard markings? ww2censor 16:13, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I went out and tried to research them, but I'm so far having no luck. If I recall correctly, they feature a lower-case u over a lower case n within a circle, with a number or something. It is possibly related to UNSPSC. It may even have nothing to do with shipping or hazards, but I thought for sure I had seen it on a case of bleach bottles. --Mdwyer 21:37, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I found something! It is an IATA code, and it shows up on MSDS sheets as "IATA UN ID NUMBER" or something similar. For instance, 1791 appears to be bleach[1]. --Mdwyer 21:41, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have a customer who knows about shipping and she may know something about this as I have seen ORM-Ds at her place and we also work on here MSDSs. It will not happen before next week at the earliest. ww2censor 21:43, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Staying up to keep an eye on Postage stamps of Ireland?

Staying up to keep an eye on Postage stamps of Ireland, as it might be getting some attention today? (And obvious congrats for your part in that.) FlowerpotmaN·(t) 00:01, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I have been unable to keep close eye on it but it seems like the main page articles really gets swamped by vandals all day. Thanks for your efforts. I will look at it in a day or two and see if there are any constructive edits that should stay. I was out most of the afternoon only saw it early on last night and in the last hour or so. So what is the next philatelic, or Irish WP:FA we can collaborate on. I suggest Mail which was an FA some time ago, or President of Ireland which is on WP:FAR right now. Cheers ww2censor 00:08, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You can normally tell when an article is on the Main Page, when it starts to appear every few minutes on Recent Changes. But it seems to have survived quite well [2]; I can't see anything major problems with the changes.
I'll keep an eye out for anything that might be FA candidates. FlowerpotmaN·(t) 22:56, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It did reasonably well. I did not know that Main Page FAs get hammered so hard but as you say it survived quite well and most of the changes are constructive, though I might revert one or two and take on board some comments that came from elsewhere. Cheers. ww2censor 00:44, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Irelandproj tags

Ww, not sure those nested tags work; better to leave the Irelandproj tags as well, like they do in Australia. (Sarah777 01:30, 19 August 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Depends, they do work but too many tags gets messy at the top of the talk page which is why one uses a banner shell. I'm going to look closer at some other to see if I can figure out how they actually work. Bye ww2censor 01:35, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Look at Arklow now. Cheers ww2censor 01:45, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yep..see Arklow, I understand what you are doing. But will the updating bot (the one that produces that nice table) pick up on the nested tags??? (Sarah777 01:49, 19 August 2007 (UTC))[reply]
You are up late! I will not be up this late next month in Ireland. The bot should only change what is needs, but I am looking around at that stuff later today and maybe tomorrow. ww2censor 02:12, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry to have caused bother. IMO multiple projects should be nested, for conciseness(?). Either that or accept that there's a limit to number of projects that an article can be linked to, which would lead to projects being less than comprehensive. I'll stick to the consensus, of course. If "nested tag" means "nested=yes", then it does work (the only exception seems to be the "thoroughbred horse", see Talk:Kildare Town). Folks at 137 07:18, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Copied this and another disucssion to the assessment talk page which seems more appropriate that being on two user talk pages. ww2censor 23:58, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just in addition to my message on WP:IRL/Assessment talk page (Great minds, etc)

Just in addition to my message on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ireland/Assessment , I had been playing with a few suggestions regarding towns, cities, counties, etc. etc. on my sandbox at the weekend. FlowerpotmaN·(t) 01:08, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Something along those lines could be used as guidelines though we will need to develop them for most classes of article, like biographies, art, history, society, science. etc. So let's keep working. I will post something later this evening to all members of the project. ww2censor 01:13, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Ireland banner

I think I have sorted the kinks out of the {{tl|WikiProject Ireland}} banner. I have a version on my sandbox although I have to check a few of the categories. I just "nicked" the current WP:Cities banner (which the old {{tl|WikiProject Ireland}} banner was based on). This version has the nested box fix. FlowerpotmaN·(t) 22:58, 21 August 2007 (UTC) PS: You might to take the tag from the top of my sandbox and try it on a sandbox page yourself working through the various parameters.FlowerpotmaN·(t) 23:01, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Excuse my ignorance, but your revised edition looks exactly the same as the current one except that you have added the nested requirement. Am I wrong here? How do you suggest I test it? Did you actually make a new temp template, not just alter the syntax as shown on the original template page. Did you look in the edit screen and is that he code you revised? If so what is the link to that revised template. Maybe you are up late tonight as I will be around for a few more hours on and off. ww2censor 00:41, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Just add this {{User:Flowerpotman/sandbox/templtest}} to a sandbox page, or you can edit my sandbox. Apart from the problem with nesting, the existing version isn't showing the importance assessment. Try changing the importance of this page User:Flowerpotman/sandbox2. (I'll be removing it later as I don't really want it in the FA class articles.)More in a minute.FlowerpotmaN·(t) 01:04, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Minor clarification: The existing template is adding the page to the correct importance category, but it's not showing the importance assessment in the box. My version , or to be more accurate, the version I robbed from WP:Cities does. The {{tl|WikiProject Ireland}} template was based on an older version of the WP:Cities one, so I just grabbed their one and updated/modified it.FlowerpotmaN·(t) 01:14, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Both templates are adding your sandboxes to the category page but it looks like the first sandbox version works best - the sandbox2 has a problem as it is not showing the importance value. So can you drop the full working code into the current template and make a note on the template page saying it has been updated. Which template should be corrected, or should it apply to both so no one has to go back and change any on the pages? Thanks ww2censor 02:45, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It can apply to both {{tl|Irelandproj}} and {{tl|WikiProject Ireland}}, as the parameters of {{tl|Irelandproj}} are limited to class and importance: "class=" and "importance=". So dropping the new code in there would just make the Irelandproj template act the same as the other one. This has the added benefit in that Sarah won't be coming after me with an axe, as she has been using that template. Tell you what, it's getting late, even for me, and I left a note on Alison's page to test the version, so it might be better to leave avtually updating it until tomorrow, in case we missed something.FlowerpotmaN·(t) 03:05, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As suggested I would paste into both templates, though I think one van use a bot to replace all instances of a template with another. Maybe Ali will have something to say when she looks at it. Cheers & goodnight. ww2censor 03:10, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Aindrias Ó Caoimh, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the article and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. --Darkwind (talk) 08:08, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Test template

If any of you want to test the test template, just create a sandbox page of your own and add this line to it:

{{User:Flowerpotman/sandbox/templtest}}

The options currently supported are on this page User:Flowerpotman/sandbox/templtest. This template is really just a copy of the the current WP:Cities template. The current Wikiproject Ireland template is based on an old version of the WP:Cities one. FlowerpotmaN·(t) 00:07, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Heights of Irish mountains

Yes, I did indeed notice that - but I assumed (without checking) that they must know what they are doing. On reflection, they changed several of mine and I definitely took the data directly from official OSi maps. I will look into it. (Sarah777 21:42, 25 August 2007 (UTC))[reply]

OK, I've just checked two, but it's enough. OSi Discovery 56 - 4th edition (the latest) gives Lugnaquillia as 925 m and Mullaghcleevaun as 849 m. These were the heights I entered. The new version gives 924 and 847 respectively. If someone has a better source they should be told to share it with us! After you.....(Sarah777 21:49, 25 August 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Slow coach!! I just did it a few seconds before you left the message. Thanks. The assessment team are working on assessing as many Irish articles as possible. I think we have assessed about 800 articles in the last 2 weeks but am just waiting for the bot to collect the statistics again. Don't forget you can ask for an assessment for any article here Cheers ww2censor 23:12, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not slow, I was talking about you adding the project template. If you want to add Maze Prison escape feel free, it's an article I wrote while waiting for the current ArbCom case to kick off, as once that's finished I'm leaving again. One Night In Hackney303 23:23, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That is what I was talking about. You must have seen the project template immediately I posted it and then left me the message. What took you one minute ? I had to smail it took you sooooo long. :)> Indeed we are starting to look at several other groups of articles to assess amongst them the WP:IR but need to give a balance assessment in the overall topic of Ireland. Thanks for the heads up. Cheers ww2censor 23:32, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah right. When it gets inside the 30 day limit I'm probably going to recommend the hunger strike article for the main page on 3 October, as it's the date the strike ended. One Night In Hackney303 00:41, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That would be an appropriate date indeed—26 years ago already - can't say I remember the details. On reading it recalled much that went on at the time, though it was not quite as big a deal in Dublin as it was in NI, but it was in the news pretty much daily once they neared death. ww2censor 01:18, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Maffey

The particular paragraph began with something like "Maffey urged ... " and I felt that if the reader had dipped into the middle of the article (as I had) they may not have been clear who Maffey was at this point, and might even possibly think he was an Irish minister. So I mistakenly put ambassador as I had clicked on Maffey and noted that the page had List of Ambassadors from the United Kingdom to the Republic of Ireland linked at the bottom, and had assumed that he held the title ambassador. I had no reason to think otherwise. I was "corrected" by User:MAG1, but he replaced the word "ambassador" with the word "minister" and put "Correct. There were no ambassadors in Ireland as the British Commonwealth was a diplomatic entity then." in his edit summary. Following this I realised my mistake, but also noted that the word MAG1 had used was equally incorrect, and so I replaced the word "minister" with the word "representative", and I put "fair enough - but minister is just as wrong" in the edit summary. I fail to see how this edit summary can lead you to believe that "[my] edit comment seems to question [the usage of representative]", if anything it affirms it! Jooler 23:18, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It was not that you comment so much questioned the description of Maffey but that his title was in question prior to your correction and you seem to have it right now. Cheers ww2censor 23:40, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Postal History - Mail by Rail

Thank you for your welcome to Wikipedia!

I am as yet rather inexperienced in contributing to Wikipedia - but hope to learn!

I am a member of a long-established Postal History Society and have a reasonable knowledge of matters relating to the PH of Northern England and mails by rail and by air.

Have tried to improve the introductory wording to 'Postal History' but would be very happy for you to 'watch over my shoulder' and amend as necessary. I was trying to clarify that general public mail, as well as court etc mail , falls within 'prestamp-mail'.

My sources re the 1830 date for railway mail are : (1) 'Mail by Rail' by Peter Johnson, Ian Allan, 1995, pages 9-10, ISBN 0 7110 2385 9 and (2) 'A History of the Manchester Post Office 1625-1900' by Charles Calvert published privately in 1966.

In addition, various numeral marks are known to have been applied to some letters carried by the Liverpool and Manchester Railway from 1833 onwards - I have three of these rare items in my collection.

I do not yet know how to add these references to my contribution and would be grateful if you could help!

I deal with the philately portal, (not that it is so great but it exists and gets updated every now and then) so I have some experience if you need some guidance. There are several sub-pages on the portal that should be updated with some regularity with appropriate data and you can always add new pages. I find it useful to create a set of several rotatable topics that can be reused every now and then on some of the sub-pages, but Ireland probably have sufficient pages that this will not be necessary. You might want to add a sub-page with links to new articles and don't forget to promote it wherever you can on all appropriate noticeboards. Remember to balance the topics shown at any one time; an NPOV is a good attitude to take. Good luck and cheers. ww2censor 23:05, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the advice before. Could you take a look at my final rejig (certain there are spelling mistakes in parts, I'll clear those when my eyes stop bleeding!) your views on my re-working would be appreciated. I'd like to keep it updated daily (we've so many article, it should be doable). If you can think of anything, could you recommend a couple of things here? Thanks again for before. --sony-youthpléigh 21:34, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Irish stamps

Hello Ww2censor,

It's my pleasure to announce you that the Postage stamps of Ireland article is now an article de qualité in French too. I look forward to going to Ireland again soon (and sorry for the rugby match yesterday ;-)). Thanks again for your great contribution, cordially, Kokin 07:57, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article assessment update September 27, 2007

You might take a look at the latest batch of assessments. It seems the consistency is being lost especially with "high" and "top" importance; eg the Senate is "top", the Taoiseach is only "high". Many more examples. Do we need some process to control "high" and "top" rating? (Sarah777 01:28, 28 September 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Working late!!! Nice modification of my page notice!
Some of those ratings may have been mine, but working late, like you are, is not so good for a clear mind. I have modified Taoiseach but modify any others if you think should be higher or lower if more appropriate, or ask me to weigh in on any others you think are not appropriate. Cheers. ww2censor 02:06, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about that! Never noticed...but I see you have posted a warning now. Not all the assessments were yours by any means; I tend to not assess above "high" - leave that to the experts like yourself! Regards (Sarah777 22:58, 28 September 2007 (UTC))[reply]
No problem at all. I don't know that I am such an expert but I suspect that in future we will need to discuss high and top ratings, but I am sure you are well able to be objective too. Cheers ww2censor 23:05, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nice to be back

Thank you very much for welcoming me back to WP. I shall keep an eye on the philately project and join in when I can, time allowing. By the way, I see a contact of mine (calling herself Saipan Sam) had a brief flirtation with the site and contributed a bit to philately. I'll try and persuade her to give it another try. All the best. --BlackJack | talk page 18:41, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

TVM. Sam did some work and then seemed to get pissed off. Not really sure why though she may have thought I rubbed her up the wrong way for being bold and possibly overstepping her newby mark concerning this. See you later. ww2censor 19:27, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Latest stats

Hi Ww, I am a bit concerned with about a dozen bands being graded "high" class. Snow Patrol and Stiff Little Fingers as important as Sinn Fein or the Church of Ireland? Hardly even close IMHO. Please take a look. Regards (Sarah777 14:51, 6 October 2007 (UTC))[reply]

None of these bands have stood the test of time for generations, so should at best be mid or low. That seems to be Flowerpotman. Let's have a word with him. Why don't you bring it up at the assessments talk page. Nearly 4,000!! I am finding all sorts of categories that have been completely untouched. ww2censor 14:57, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hadn't noticed Flowerpot was the guilty party! Guess we know his taste in music so.(Sarah777 19:22, 6 October 2007 (UTC))[reply]
errr....I will readily concede Stiff Little Fingers :O). Ash, I think was a misplaced paste. Will go to assessments page on the others though. FlowerpotmaN·(t) 03:55, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That line again! Profound apologies...(Sarah777 09:40, 7 October 2007 (UTC))[reply]
