Importance Scale

As this WikiProject is fairly young, I think it might be a good idea to lay some groundwork early on so that we do not end up needing to rework things later. One thing that comes to mind is the article importance rating, as I see no guidelines for determining an article's importance within WP:BOSOX. Looking at more established project like WP:MLB, they have thousands of articles without importance values, which I think is largely due to people not feeling comfortable ranking articles so instead they just place the banner. So, what I'm thinking is something more detailed in terms of criteria, without going to an extreme, so people feel comfortable putting in an importance rating when they add the banner. And of course there will be exceptions to every rule and not everything can be covered.

Here's my proposal. It's just a starting point to get the ball rolling. I'm sure I have missed some important criteria somewhere, and I'm sure we will need to shift things around to reach a consensus. Let me know what you all think, then we can move forward working through assessing the unkown importance articles category. AWeenieMan 17:51, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

  • Excellent point. I don't see any reason we cannot change "Current manager" to "Current manager and general manager" in the High importance class, as Theo probably should be higher up. Personally, I would rather see an iconic players category added to the High importance class than Top class. My reasoning on this would simply be that if we keep the Top importance class fairly small, we will have a better chance at improving those articles than if it is larger (and the word iconic way be considered vague to some, which might promote its use), but it isn't a deal-breaker for me. And I would agree that real questions on priority should be brought up here, but I think a general guideline might encourage more people to fill in importance levels. - AWeenieMan (talk) 15:48, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

All of this sounds good so far. Where it says "Current ballpark" in top importance, that wouldn't mean Fenway Park gets bumped down to high-importance should they get a new stadium. I think any stadiums they should have (not too sure about Huntington Avenue Grounds) should probably be top-importance. Any thoughts?   jj137 Talk 00:01, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
I personally don't believe Huntington Avenue Grounds should be top priority, so I would err against writing "Ballparks" or something like that. Also, any descriptive name that currently only encompasses Fenway might prove confusing (as in implying another park falls into the category). How about changing it to "Current and future ballparks"? That should cover all bases (not to mention, we could always change the chart if the Sox get a new park). - AWeenieMan (talk) 00:26, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Coordination

I realize we have open tasks, and I appreciate the effort that went into making them. But does anyone think we should try and coordinate activities more. I suggested this idea at WT:MLB as well, but feel it would be more appropriate here, because the members are more active. Would anyone be up for the (possible) idea of a periodic newsletter? Roster

Sox article too long

The Boston Red Sox article is 85kb long. That's 20kb bigger than Massachusetts and 12kb bigger than Major League Baseball. Its time to consider the article. We should consider creating a new article for the team's history. We also need to greatly reduce the amount of space dedicated to the team's last five years (most of which could be moved to the history section). ~Sasha Callahan (Talk) 06:23, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Departments?

  • I know we're a fairly small project, but I think we should have departments, like WP:MLB does. I propose we use the following ones:
    • Assessment: Responsible for assessing articles by importance and quality, would also be a good place for questions of importance to be brought up.
    • Article Improvement: Each week, the project would turn its focus on one particular article. Members of this department would participate in editing that page.
    • New Pages: Responsible for creating new pages relating to the Red Sox, and reviewing those made by others.
    • Communications: Primarily would deal with recruiting new members, but also would work with members of other wikiprojects. Would also take charge of the news letter.
  • A person could be a member of as many departments as he/she wants, or wouldn't have to join a department. However, this would help members of the project work together. ~Sasha Callahan (Talk) 07:32, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Interwikis

There are over 2 dozen 'interwiki' links for Boston Red Sox. In May 2007, on zh, in the course of updating lists of minor league teams for MLB team articles, I updated Bosox' roster from a mid-2006 status. Well, I like to go to zh:Boston Red Sox during the season and practice reading; it would take a native speaker to really take care of the article. Some people writing about the team on it, pt, fr, zh, ja and ko et cetera might be big Sox fans, maybe some kind of interwiki outreach notice would be appropriate. --Mr Accountable (talk) 23:40, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
Possibly. I figure a major interwiki outreach thing would be for other language speakers to set up a WikiProject Red Sox in their own language. Obviously only a native or near-native speaker could do that, and it still is very challenging.   jj137 00:51, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
Right, but I can guess that there would be a good likelihood that Red Sox fans working on interwiki Red Sox-related articles would maybe be bilingual people living in the US, or would be en-1 or en-2. My Opinion

I was wondering if I could add a section (heading) on the WikiProject Boston Red Sox home page, called something like Achievements so that everyone can keep tract of what members have done easily. They should add things like if they created a new article, have made a major edit, made an article to a higher ranking such as high, and ect. Spliting main article?

The page Boston Red Sox has a {{split-apart}} tag, suggesting it be split into two; the talk page explains that the history section should be split into History of the Boston Red Sox. Well, guess what? Somebody copied the history section to that page, but it's still in the main article as well. That's not good. And the discussion of whether to split still continues on the talk page. I'm a fan, but straightening this out is not one of my wikipriorities. I hope someone else can handle it. New Graphic

I created a new graphic of the 1908 logo to replace the old one, traced from a photo of Cy Young's jersey in the Hall of Fame and more accurate than the crude one that was in the Red Sox article. As an added bonus, it's in SVG format so it scales well.

I added it to the article, but I notice that you guys are still using the old one in your project box - I don't want to mess around with your project, but thought you might be interested in swapping for the new one, trying to reduce the number of duplicate images. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. I just took a quick look at this and I was a little surprised it was rated 'start'. Looks like a fairly solid B class to me - sure it could use some more work, but it reads as more then a start IMO. It's definitely past Start-class. With a bit more referencing it would be B-class, but for now, I'm guessing it is the new "C-class", although I don't know much more than described above about it. Just my opinion, however.   jj137 (talk) 16:49, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

Department of Minor Leagues

Should there be a Department of Minor Leagues, involving teams and players, history and parks? Etc? Article Boston Red Sox minor league players is ok, lots of red ink. Here is the oft-cited WP:ATHLETE, recopied here in its entirety:

Athletes

  • People who have competed at the fully professional level of a sport, or a competition of equivalent standing in a non-league sport such as swimming, golf or tennis.[9]
  • People who have competed at the highest amateur level of a sport, usually considered to mean the Olympic Games or World Championships.

This includes all minor leagues, rookie leagues, Venezuela and Arizona and other summer leagues, instructional leagues, Cape Cod league etc. It includes professional farm systems of Japan, Taiwan, Korea, DR etc.

Things seem to be going well here at WP:SOX since inception, as all time rosters and ancillary articles are filled out and improved, minor leagues and farm system seem like an obvious direction to go in.

There is discussion ongoing at Wikipedia_talk:BIO#RFC:_WP:Athlete_Professional_Clause_Needs_Improvement debating possible changes to the WP:ATHLETE notability guideline. As a result, some have suggested using WP:NSPORT as an eventual replacement for WP:ATHLETE. Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 32,665 as of May 16. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Boston Red Sox/Unreferenced BLPs. As of May 17 you have approximately 28 articles to be referenced, a 12.5% reduction from last week. Question

Hi, I am not sure who to address these questions too, or even if this is the right place, but here goes. I was on the 1981 red sox season page and I notice that the link to Dave Schmidt lists him as a major league pitcher. While there was a Dave Schmidt who pitched in the major league for several years, I am pretty sure that the Dave Schmidt who played for the Red Sox was a catcher. He was with the Red Sox for a couple of months in the first half of that year while Gedman was recovering from an elbow injury.

Also I think that there should be some mention to the exhibition game that was played at Fenway immediately before the start of the second half of the season. The Sox played the Expos and Bill Lee started for Montreal. I don't remember who won the game but I am sure it can't be that hard to find??

The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs andrequest new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use thedisplay=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Boston Red Sox articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Red Sox articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Pinky Higgins bio

On 7 Jan 2011, an unnamed user deleted the chapter "Role in Forestalling Integration" from Higgins' biography. While this may be an act of vandalism (user has not signed in to edit) it could also be an attempt to edit/improve the chapter. A clear discussion of Higgins' role in the late 1950s in the Red Sox' reluctance to break the color line is undoubtedly part of any biography, as he is still referenced today in this matter.McGill1974 (talk) 14:19, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Red Sox - Braves rivalry article proposal

Hi, I was wondering if someone here would start a Red Sox - Braves rivalry article. Of course the rivalry is outdated, but that doesn't make it any less notable. There have been two AfD discussions for the Yankees-Giants rivalry article and both had overwhelming keeps. Wikipedia's articles are based on notability and not recentism. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively.
