Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS) is a Jesuit-run business school in Ranchi, India. It was established as an extension department of St. Xavier's College, Ranchi, in 1955 with the objective of training young men and women in Rural Development, Personnel Management and Industrial Relations. In 1973 the institute was registered as a separate educational society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. In 1978, it moved to its present site. Admission to the institute is done on the basis of the score obtained in one of the institute-approved tests like Xavier Aptitude Test[6]/CAT/CMAT[7] and subsequent Group Discussion - Personal Interview (GD-PI) conducted for the shortlisted candidates in the respective centers allocated.[8] In 2011, XISS was ranked 33rd overall among the top 40 B-schools in India.[9]

History

Xavier Institute of Social Service was established in 1955 as a center for social service at St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi. It was named after the Jesuit Saint Francis Xavier for his missionary work in India. XISS was established with the mission to develop human resources for various sectors such as industries, business, rural development, health care etc. in the Chota Nagpur region.[10] In 1973, the Institute was registered as a separate educational society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. In 1978, it moved to its present site and over the years has grown in terms of both capacity as well as resources.

Admission

Candidates are required to apply separately to the institute with their required course preferences as soon as the registration process for admission begins, which will be mentioned on the college website. Applications can be submitted online. Entry into XISS is obtained by getting the adequate cut-off score (as set by the institute) in one of the tests approved by the institute like the Xavier Aptitude Test conducted by XLRI usually held in the month of January[11] or CAT conducted by IIMs or CMAT conducted by AICTE.[12] The cut-off scores may vary for different exams. The candidates obtaining the cut-off score will be shortlisted for the subsequent Group Discussion-Personal Interview (GD-PI) held across various places in India. Based on their performance in both the test and (GD-PI) the institute releases the list of the selected candidates on its website in the month of April. Sometimes there are waiting lists as the first list of the selected candidates may not be the final list. The final list is available by the month of May. The classes resume from the month of June.[13]

Academic Programmes

Currently, XISS offers the following diploma and certificate programmes:

Social Service Field Work

Social Service Field Work is a compulsory task for all first year students of PGDM-HRM and PGDM-IT in XISS and they voluntarily keep themselves engaged in their first year course with the reputed humanitarian organizations in Ranchi.[20][21] The students visit their respective field work centres on their own, on various days in a week to carry out social initiatives and service.[22][23]

The students of rural management are also involved in rural camps and field trips which help them in understanding the rural society in a better way along with providing them with adequate exposure to the complexities of rural life.[24] The institute has collaborated with UNICEF to launch a Knowledge Management Resource Centre (KMRC) with a view to build a knowledge base for women and children-related issues in Jharkhand.[25]
