The song has been covered in a swing/jazz style by Paul Anka on his 2007 covers album Classic Songs, My Way. English pop-rock band McFly covered the song as a B-side to their 2005 single, "I Wanna Hold You". Texas artist Playradioplay! covered the song on his 2007 EP The Frequency as well. Many other artists have performed live covers of the song, including American rock band Fall Out Boy, Coldplay and Scottish singer/songwriter Amy MacDonald. The song has also been covered by the Vitamin String Quartet, Boyce Avenue and on the UK television show Orange Unsigned Act by contestant Tommy Reilly (Scottish musician). A cappella versions include a version by Wheaton College's Gentlemen Caller's and Boston-based a cappella group Overboard for their 2006 album, "Shipwrecked".

[edit] Video

There are 2 videos for this song: the UK version is the original version and was The Killers first video; due to the fact that the band were on an independent record label the video was done with a low budget and was consequently very basic. When they were signed by Island Records in the US the band decided to film a higher budget video: the American video for this song stars Flowers, Izabella Miko, and Eric Roberts in a love triangle, taking place within the context of a burlesque show. Directed by Sophie Muller, it was inspired by the 2001 film Moulin Rouge!.

The American version won a MTV VMA in 2004 for Best Rock Video.

The first version has 1 million views on YouTube. The second version has over 21 million views on YouTube.
