Help please - wiki virgin. I've just added a paragraph to the Hildebrand and Hillgrubber section, with references. But both 'Mein Kampf', 'Zweitesbuch' and 'Lebensraum' should be in blue and linked to the wiki page. I don't know how to do this. I've just been shown how to do links [[]], but how do I direct if it leads to one of those pages with loads of options?

eg, while Mussolini and Poland work, Franco and Czech don't.

So how can I get Franco to link to Franco's page, and Czech to Czechoslovakia? After all, the book I'm quoting is quite clear that just Czech should be incorporated into the Reich, not Slovakia as well, and this gave much shorter, and easily defensible borders.

Pick out the page you want from the DAB page then you use a "pipe" - a vertical bar "|" - [[Czechoslovakia|Czech]] - shows as Czech - before the pipe is the link, after the pipe is the text you see.  Ronhjones  (Talk)

If you want help learning the ropes, I could offer adoption. I've slacked off a bit on my course, but I could hand you a link when I'm done updating it. I'd also suggest joining WP:MILHIST, a place where people (like me) get together to coordinate improvements on various subjects on military history. How's this sound? Yes please, I'd really appreciate that. I'll have a look at the milhist in a bit. I've already looked at a couple of pages I could add to:

1)Munich_Conference. I just gave it a skim, but noticed it didn't mention a) Hitler didn't want to be appeased, he expected his demands to be unacceptable. b) The reasons for him changing his mind - the lack of support for his military parade, Goring and Mussolini, and c) His regret "That chap NC has spoiled my entry into Prague" and in April '44 still calling it his biggest mistake. Though he did try to convince the press in early 39 that he'd done the right thing "2,000kms of fortifications without a shot being fired".

2) Lebensraum: The author says practical implementation started in 1939 with the invasion of Poland. a) Actually, all his actions from 1933 - reamament, Rhineland, Aut, Cz, Pol, were all leading to this, as he said in a speech to the generals in Nov 39. b) He ideally wanted Pol to join him, and offered them the Ukraine, but they didn't want to be a Nazi satellite c) He told the LoN High Commissioner in Danzig in Aug that all his actions were directed against Russia, and had said in May that LR in Russia, not Danzig was the issue. d) In the next sentence the author says that the order for complete settlement only came in 1941, the year of Barbarossa. So you could argue LR's practical implementation started either with re-armament in 33, or in 1941. Rowse, Bullock, Trevor-Roper, Weinberg, Dray, Bell etc would all see his actions upto and including Poland as just examples of his flexibility and opportunism in pursuit of his sole aim, LR in Rusia, especially the Ukraine bread-basket "so they can't starve us out as they did in the last war".

So help in doing this properly, and with the referencing (someone tidied up my first attempt) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the advice and I'll await suggestions about how to go about it. Will look at the milhist link when I get back from the shops.

How to separate refs into refs and bibliography[edit]

Please help this newbie - only 2nd day. Yesterday, editing my first page, I added some references, but put the entire reference in the <R>...</R> bit. Thankfully someone tidied it up for me to split the refs and bibliography.

I've just been editing Munich_Agreement#The_Pressure_on_Czechoslovak_government, the first two paragraphs, with references 2-24, but have made the same error. (I also need to check to see what blue links I can/need to add)

Some chap nicely said he'd adopt me when he's finished the course, but it the mean time, can someone please tell me how to do the refs and biblio properly. I will keep editing this page tomorrow, as not only citations missing, but there were a couple of errors and some serious omissions.

(I would try to look at the help pages, but when there's a page with 100 new expressions in blue that I don't understand, I just end up with 300 open tabs and lose all track of what's being said. I know this makes me sound an idiot, but the stuff I've added is right.

btw the original article said Benes changes his mind on Sept 2nd, my two sources say 4th or 5th so I've put both with the source for each (leaving out the uncited, original 2nd). When I've checked other books, I'll have a clearer idea of the true date. But was it right to say ...On the wth (ref) or 5th (ref), Benes changed his ......

  • Essentially, the term "bibliography" means different things within different cultures. Oftentimes, people use the terms interchangeably, while others distinguish between the two. For the sake of Wikipedia, when offering a list of publications for which the subject has authored, we include this in a "Published works" section. Article layout assistance can be found here.   • What I mean is that the first page I edited had citation needed. So I added the whole book info in a <r>...</r> bit (where r=ref). i.e Bloggs, J. 'World War 2', (2010), p.123, the Made up Uni Press, London. A litlle blue ref [1] would appear in the text, with the whole details appearing next to 1. in the NOTES at the bottom.
But it should just be <Bloggs, 2010, p.123> in the notes at the bottom, with the book details appearing in the BIBLIOGRAPHY below the notes.
So if I had references all from the same book, eg [1] p.123, [2] page 124 and [3] p.125, then it should ne that the notes say 1 Bloggs, 2010, p.123, 2 Bloggs, 2010, p.124, 3 Bloggs, 2010, p.125, with the book details just appearing once in the bibliography.
Also if I use Blogs p.123 for several different refs, then (when my first edit was mixed for me), it would have [1] at the three different locations in the text, with a litlle(up hat symbol) followed by little blue a,b,c before the Author, date and page in the notes.
cf [Dunkirk_evacuation] refs 35 and 38 which have been fixed for me compared with [Munich_Conference] notes 1-24 which haven't.

Do I blue link every occurence or only the first?[edit]

In the article Munich_Agreement#The_Pressure_on_Czechoslovak_government, for example, do I blue link very occurrence of Hitler (or a less common term such as General Rundstedt), or only the first. Or only the first in each section?

If it was a long article, for example, and a user used the index to jump to a mid-point, they might not realise that von R was blue linkable to his own page.

But if I link every occurrence of every term with its own wiki page, then half the article could theoretically be in blue.

Why was it removed? I've re-added it.

Everything is correct and I'm asking friends to provide references where possible. The point is that the Free Rave scene was the biggest cultural phenomenon in 1992, that's why it was banned. This led to it's export to Europe where a whole new culture has been created. You could argue that while exports such as The Beatles and Punk only created music scenes, the Teknivals had had a longer legacy. They're still going in France 19 years after the first one.

These countries never had any culture of free festivals and living in vehicles. They have been debated in parliament, legislated against, been subjected to violent repression, but they still continue. Upon leaving the last one in France I went to, the newspaper's headline read "80,000 teuffeurs a la teknival". There were notices giving instructions on the digital boards over the motorways. Many words have entered various European languages as a result of this, and a new culture, and a more enduring one than any of the UK's previous musical-cultural exports, has been created.

If someone thinks this is in the wrong place, or somehow irrelevant to this section, please justify this, don't simply remove it. The fact is that it is non-commercial, but it is culturally significant. The fact that it can't be measured in No.1s or golden-discs is irrelevant. The point is that more people have been to these teknivals in the fields and warehouses of Europe in the last 20 years that have seen any British band, with the possible exception of the likes of the Rolling Stones.

There world would have remained pretty much unchanged if all but a few of the acts listed had never formed. However, had Castlemorton not led to the CJA and Spiral Tribe going to Paris then Barcelona, there would not have been a free Rave scene, and no free festivals or Teknivals, in many European countries. This is surely relevant to British musical culture.

In fact I fail to see how it cannot be relevant to this section.

I've removed stub status, is this ok?[edit]

I've removed stub status from Second_Thirty_Years_War after adding the counter arguments, refernces and bibliography.

Also, Listen_to_Britain was rated start class, but I've corrected the error about the quoted introduction (it was only in the US release, the whole point was Jennings wanted the world to listen to Britain but not with words. It was added by a 'nervous' civil servant who feared the Americans would not understand the subtlety.) I've also added the Poetry, Propaganda, Myth and Ambiguity section along with refernces and bibliography. How do I ask it to be examined for B-class status? And how do I find out what needs to be done for it to be upgraded in this way? And now I've removed stub staus from Second_Thirty_Years_War (if this is ok) how do I find what status it is now, and what would be needed to improve it further?

Where do I find out about these stub/start/B/A statuses?

Second Thirty Years War is "within the scope of Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history" (from Talk:Second Thirty Years War); you can check with them for approval, or editors who monitor or watchlist the page may contact you or make changes. Please help me with... Links to foreign wiki pages:

I found that Erich Balla {the source I quoted in the page I edited} has a German wiki page. And many people have an auto-translate button in their browsers now. But I looked at wiki and it said that to link a foreign page you put [ [:country code:name] ], which I did, using de as country code [ [:de:Erich Balla] ]. {Though without the space between the two square brackets, obviously.}

However this displayed it on the page {with a sort of mauve coloured link} as de:Erich Balla {Not in bold, obv.} The link still worked, but it would have confused people reading it.

Is this meant to have been displayed in this manner?

Surely you should be able to get it to link without displaying the country code and colon {de:} in front of his name? Help appreciated.

You could use a "piped link". If you type [[:de:Erich Balla|Erich Balla]] it will show as Erich Balla and will go to the German article. On the Principle of least astonishment, you should perhaps provide some indication that the link goes to a German-language article.

March Madness 2017[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting[edit]

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. User group for Military Historians[edit]

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.
