Hi Sfan00. The photo on Anagotus stephenensis is tagged for deletion. I am new to this, so please accept my ignorance, so am not sure what I need to do - is it for removal of a copy, or is there a problem with the image? Any help would be gratefully accepted. By the way, people that edit Wikipedia are fantastic - I appreciate the work that you do to keep it so good! Cheers, Markanderson72 (talk) 01:46, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Donald Figer RIT News.png[edit]

I am confused as to why you would tag this file for deletion. I applied a copyright license tag to the image, and forwarded the photographer's permission to permissions-en@wikimedia.org last week. I have done everything by your rules as directed, and am frustrated that the image is still tagged for deletion. What more do I have to do? Thanks for clarifying, user:Acht88. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.21.172.179 (talk) 16:56, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You neeed to add {{OTRS-pending}} on the image. I've done that for you :) Sfan00 IMG (talk) 18:14, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Process improvement thoughts?[edit]

Hi, an editor, user:Sarnold17, is feeling a little overwhelmed with all the notices arising from a simple missed license. At one time, there were seven templates for the same image.

Several were removed, but you added another one. I see that you used Twinkle, a tool I don't know very well. Do you think we should urge the developers of the tool to add something to look for a prior template, so that duplication doesn't occur, or is this something we should ask editors to watch for manually?

Th editor found the messages confusing, and I am discussing how that can be improved, but I see that as a separate issue from the multiple templates for the same file. I see you are highly experienced, so I hope you can other some thoughts on how we can improve our processes.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 20:16, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You could always ask :) Sfan00 IMG (talk) 20:26, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK The seven identical tags were for Commons (not license violations.) They were not added by me, but I can see how multiple tags get's confusing... Sfan00 IMG (talk) 20:31, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I understood that, due to a mistake, multiple commons tags were added. They were removed with an apology. However, you added a redundant tag, for no obvious reason. I'm looking for your thoughts on how we as a project can reduce this. Do you think it is better to automate it(.i.e ask Twinkle developers to test for prior examples of the tag, and not add a second), or would it be better to simply educate taggers to watch for it manually?--SPhilbrick(Talk) 14:42, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure. Have you brouthg this up at WP:VP?

Good catch[edit]

Hi, Sfan. I've added FURs to two of the three illustrations you pointed out today, but I think the third one, The_screemies.jpg, probably should be deleted. I added it in 2006, long before becoming more versed in image fair-use, and it strikes me now as more of a decorative image than an informative one. --Tenebrae (talk) 19:37, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Was it an original or a re-print cover? Sfan00 IMG (talk) 08:02, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wasn't a cover -- was a splash page. Found it on the 'net, but the original site no longer has it. I will say the Marvel Masterworks with Yellow Claw and The Black Knight has some beautiful work in it — Severin, Maneely, Kirby. Highly recommended. --Tenebrae (talk) 03:04, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Non-free rationale for File:Shadows of Cairn - Title Screen.gif[edit]

I've added rationale to and removed the warning on the image in question, as well as adding rationale for a related image. I apologize for being unable to obtain a better "title image" than this, but as stated in the edit summary, I no longer have a physical copy of the game available to me. Believe me when I say I would much rather have the CD jewel case manual cover up there instead of a screenshot. ~ Josephine Lithius (Info|Chat|Edits) 05:39, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, well... I went and changed my text-based rationale to templates instead. Much more detailed. I sincerely with there'd been some kind of indication that this was what you were looking for instead of just a "This image is here why?" explanation. ~ Josephine Lithius (Info|Chat|Edits) 17:55, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:Stokely Carmichael 1967.jpg[edit]

You added User talk:Jmabel#Non-free rationale for File:Stokely Carmichael 1967.jpg, then crossed it out without comment. I looked at File:Stokely Carmichael 1967.jpg; it looks as if you yourself filled out {{Non-free use rationale}}, replacing the old {{fairusein}}, but didn't fit all of the relevant data into the field (which I've now done). Are you satisfied with the present state of it, or do you feel that more of a rationale is needed? - Jmabel | Talk 18:03, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Blackdog[edit]

I notice that you repeated your edit to Blackdog after I reverted. I'm not sure what you're trying to do here, but surely replacing a blue link with a red link can't be beneficial...? --Deskford (talk) 22:55, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:Mattapoisett Sea Horse.jpg[edit]

Okay, you are the second person to flag me for this (albeit on different pictures). What I need to know is, why the heck does this keep happening? If my images are older than Commons, why didn't they just get transferred over? It's very frustrating to be told that pictures I took seven years ago and posted five years ago are suddenly not considered "free" because they weren't uploaded somewhere when they weren't required to be. If there is a simple way to move them all at once to take care of this issue, please let me know what it is because this is getting silly. ToddC4176 (talk) 23:30, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The image shouldn't be transferred to Commons, The issue is that it's a picture of a Non-free work Sfan00 IMG (talk) 23:32, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:Lapick inking decarlo archie.png[edit]

Hi, I followed the links you suggested regarding the non-free rationale and posted a request for help on the page for which you provided a link. I'm confused, because I feel I addressed the reasons that the use of the image is appropriate for both articles on the image page-- and had referred to the non-free rationale guidelines when working on those. The tag seems to be saying I didn't provide a rationale at all. Is the rationale insufficient, or is it placed incorrectly, or is there a different problem? I would like to properly address the concern, but may need clarification if I am to do so successfully. Thank you for any help.Artofmine (talk)

Winsor McCay images up for speedy deletion[edit]

Hi. You just put three Winsor McCay-related image description pages up for speedy deletion, citing Wikipedia:CSD#F2, which states:

Files that are corrupt, empty, or that contain superfluous and blatant non-metadata information.[8] This also includes image description pages for Commons images, except pages containing categories or information not relevant to any other project (like {{FeaturedPicture}}).

The information on those pages were categories. Am I reading the criteria wrong? Because it seems to say to me that categories are accepted. CüRlyTüRkeyTalkContribs 10:14, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ah the policy must have changed then Sfan00 IMG (talk) 11:02, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A couple of admins have gone and deleted the file description pages. Should I even bother categorizing them again? CüRlyTüRkeyTalkContribs 11:46, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No. If you ask me it is a waste of time to categorize files located on Commons on both Commons and en-wiki. The best is to categorize the files on Commons and add a {{commons category|name on category on Commons}} on the relevant category on en-wiki. --MGA73 (talk) 12:11, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:Respekt cover 1990-01.gif[edit]

I noticed that you recently added a fair-use rationale template to File:Respekt cover 1990-01.gif. The template you added indicates the image is a logo, but the image is quite clearly not a logo but a magazine cover. It would be helpful if you could update the page so that the correct template is used (probably {{Non-free use rationale}} instead of {{logo fur}}). —Psychonaut (talk) 18:24, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for changing the template. However, you still need to fill in the required fields, or else it is not a valid fair use rationale, and the image may be deleted. —Psychonaut (talk) 12:05, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:Queenbeesz.jpg[edit]

Quoting from my Talk page . . .

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Queenbeesz.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 00:57, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The rationale says "Book cover of Queen Bees and Wannabes, intended to illustrate an article directly about the work." What else is necessary for fair use? That it's a book cover used on an article whose subject is the book is pretty typical fair use on Wikipedia. I've removed the tag so it's not quickly deleted while this is sorted out. You should read the "Necessary components" section of the Non-free use rationale guideline to find out what is missing from your rationale. Instead of your free-form paragraph, you may find it easier to use the {{non-free use rationale}} template, which will help ensure that you have all the required information in your statement. —Psychonaut (talk) 14:38, 29 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you are tagging an image it would be your duty to check that beforehand. Looking at the reactions to your conduct on this talk page, it seems you are on a tagging/deletion spree pretty often. Maybe a post on WP:ANI is due? ♆ CUSH ♆ 12:30, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I do check, and it seem in relation to the SPECFIC image, it seems that the apparent blankness was for technical reasons. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:31, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) uuuhm, really: we are all humans and that Qcoder00 tagged that image is excusable since I had to look three times why this image isn't blank! Many contributors should react more cool headed if 'their' images are tagged for deletion or with any other maintain box: Qcoder00 is simply mostly right! mabdul 12:45, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
@Sfan00: What are you talking about? What technical reason? I made the image for the headers of my user and talk pages which have a blue background. Don't tell me you checked that. If you indeed feel the urge to conduct WP maintenance you need to apply a certain diligence. ♆ CUSH ♆ 12:49, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
When an image is displayed on a file description page it is displayed against a plain white background. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:51, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What background it displays against by default depends on your Wikimedia style settings. White is, of course, what most people have it set to, but in any case, if you hover over the image, a checkerboard pattern appears as the background, which should reveal any "invisible" colours. —Psychonaut (talk) 13:21, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mtc-review[edit]

Hi!. Cool... You found the new mtc-review option :-) I created Category:Copy to Wikimedia Commons reviewed by Sfan00 IMG. Also cool that you add a text from the articles where the image is used. Perhaps you could also add a link to the article where it was used and/or other relevant links when you edit? For example write "Jeffrey Alfred Legum" instead of "Jeffrey Alfred Legum"? That makes it much easier to see who or what the photo shows if the photo is ever delinked. --MGA73 (talk) 17:24, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'll bear that in mind... Could you consider tweaking the Information template to put a " This image was used in <article> on <date> field? Sfan00 IMG (talk) 17:40, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think that it would be a bad idea because there is no field like that on Commons and all the tools would need to be changed. I think a simple link in the description field should be enough. A link also helps in cases where the text says "Evergreen Cemetery". If you check Evergreen Cemetery you will notice a lot of "Evergreen Cemetery's". In that case Evergreen Cemetery (Adams County, Pennsylvania) is better. --MGA73 (talk) 17:51, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, part of the reason I was trying to get descriptions added was to make sure when thing get moved to Commons

it was clear what they were. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 19:01, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Image licensing (again...)[edit]

Oh, god, not you again... The image File:N. M. Price - Sir Walter Scott - Guy Mannering - At the Kaim of Derncleugh original scan lower quality.png is just a lower quality version of Wikipedia's biggest file which was deleted a while back. Therefore, I have no idea who the author is. Moan at the person who uploaded the big file, not me. |Randomno| WP 19:06, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WTF?[edit]

You want to delete my entry on American author Peter Rabe because of the use of a cover scan? It's a free use image, I work for the publisher of that particular book, and marking the whole page for speedy deletion is ridiculous. Get a life. I removed the image simply because all of the doublespeak about adding tags and rationales and yet not easily seeing where to put the things seems to keep the upkeep of these pages squarely in the hands of you folks who appoint yourselves guardians of such things. The image should stand, but it's gone. The page should stand, too, but lord knows what you people will do to it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RCO (talkcontribs) 19:29, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, you need to explain what you did above on the image description page for the book cover. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 19:41, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Secondly, I never tagged your entire article for deletion, only a cover image. If you work in publishing you should understand better than some people why copyrights are complex. Wikipedia has to be REALLY sure that when an image is stated as 'free' use

that actually is, and that at some later date the copyright holder isn't going complain. This means that images either have to be formally released under a 'free' license (like Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike) or use under a provision of copyright law known as 'fair-use', If an images is 'fair' use, in order to meet certain requirements, it has to say why it's being used in a 'fair' manner. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 19:53, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ridiculous number of template messages.[edit]

Instead of templating the hell out of me, maybe you could try actually explaining what it is you want. VanIsaacWScontribs 08:19, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You just need to confirm you made the Braile images, so they can be moved over to Commons :) Sfan00 IMG (talk) 09:19, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea whether what I did constitutes "making" the images. I took another uncopyrightable text/typeface image, probably Image:Braille_NULL.svg, then created each of the possible braille cells and colorized based on their usage in Korean and Japanese braille. So, did I "make" those images, or did the first guy who wasn't able to copyright it actually "make" it? Since the original image was actually derived from a computer script, does that change anything? If this were a simple question to answer, it probably would have been answered a long time ago. VanIsaacWScontribs 20:43, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Then in my view you are the 'creator' of the images concerned. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 20:44, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free software cover[edit]

Hi, please check whether the rationale that I have added to File:QBpro2008.gif is sufficient to avoid it being deleted again.

The template {{Non-free software cover}} specifies that the rationale must include rationale "the source of the work and copyright information"; but the example for usage of the template {{Non-free use rationale}}, which is suggested at WP:FUG, does not include a field prompting the editor to enter copyright information. Please can you remedy this situation, or suggest where I should raise it for discussion?

Also, can we not use a standard template for such files, just requiring specific fields such as the source of the image? What is the point of having media-specific templates such as {{Non-free software cover}} at all if they do not amount to a rationale for fair use? – Fayenatic London 17:21, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest you bring this up for discussion where you think appropriate. The template you mention has a Source field
where the immediate source could be mentioned. You are otherwise supposed to enter the copyright information in the Description.
However this isn't ideal, and so I agree with you, {{Non-free use rationale}} probably needs modifying so that there is a field
for attributing to the rights holder :) .
In the meantime you might want to see if {{Non-free use rationale video game cover}} can be tweaked into {{Non-free use rationale software cover}}.

Ah, good, we are getting somewhere here! But the plot thickens... I found Template:Game rationale as well as the one that you linked to; is that redundant? (in which case Template:Non-free game cover should link to {{Non-free use rationale video game cover}} rather than Template:Game rationale). – Fayenatic London 20:17, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings. You tagged File:King of Kings Statue.jpg with the wrong license template, and I was wondering why? We went through a major process with this over at Commons, and this was the acceptable route to go. Because there is no FoP in the US for statues, the statue has a copyright and that this why their is a copyright tag. When (eventually) the copyright for the original statue (which no longer exists) the copyright for the photograph can come into effect, which is why there is the tag that the photographer released it under. Is there something that is wrong with this situation, and if so, can you point me in the direction to fix it? Thanks, -- ТимофейЛееСуда. 21:32, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's dual tagged, you need to make it clearer that it's a 'non-free' image Sfan00 IMG (talk) 21:33, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:House-of-Refuge-Biscayne-Bay.jpg[edit]

Can we settle the status of this image? When I first uploaded it, I thought it was in the public domain. I have since determined that it was taken in 1896 by a photographer who died in 1904. I know that it appeared in a book published in 1977, but I do not know if it was published before that. As far as I can tell, if it was first published in 1977, then it is still under copyright. I would very much prefer that the image be in the public domain, but I don't see how that is possible unless the image had been published early enough for the copyright to have expired before the various extensions kicked in. -- Donald Albury 11:45, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You should put a note about that in the image description page. 12:10, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello, I see you (and other people) are deleting images I added to Comics books articles I contributed to years ago. At the time, I followed a comicbook cover procedure for uploading non free content considered as fair-use. If this procedure and/or what was produced by following this procedure are not valid any longer, it's a shame. Because this is waisted time. I won't edit these articles any more (I stopped with Wikipedia editing something like 7 years ago). You shouldn't it be easier to have a bot aligning the former Comicbooks cover procedure with today requirements ? If not, let's theses covers be deleted. Lvr (talk) 14:32, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You just need to say WHY the images constitute fair-use - Typically this is a statement saying something like " Needed tyo

show artists style"," identify specfic work" and so-on. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:34, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This was foreseen in the template and is thus already present :
The image is used for identification in the context of critical commentary of the work for which it serves as cover art. It makes a significant contribution to the user's understanding of the article, which could not practically be conveyed by words alone. The image is placed at the beginning of the article or section discussing the work, to help the user quickly identify the work and know they have found what they are looking for. Use for this purpose does not compete with the purposes of the original work, namely the book cover creator's ability to provide book cover design services and in turn marketing books to the public. .
Is that not enough ? Lvr (talk) 10:07, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You need to state that alongside the license. I know it's tedious. You should also state the original publication data...

Incomplete fair use rationales[edit]

Hello, Sfan00 IMG. Do you know what tags might be appropriate for images which have incomplete fair-use rationales? I often come across images with fair-use rationales where one or more of the required fields are blank or populated as "N/A". Neither {{di-no fair use rationale}} nor {{di-disputed_fair_use_rationale}} seem entirely appropriate in such cases, because a fair-use template is present, and what information is provided is correct; it's just incomplete. If I had to choose between them I'd probably go with the first one (if one takes that an incompletely filled template does not constitute a fair-use rationale), but perhaps you know of one that's more specific to this case…? —Psychonaut (talk) 16:22, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

{{Di-disputed fair use rationale}} giving a reason why it doesn't meet NFCC seems better to me... {{Short rationale}} used to exist but was ruled redundant at TFD Sfan00 IMG (talk) 16:24, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Gerald Massey photograph dated 1865 challenged for copyright?[edit]

Hello, Sfan -- Regarding your note to me:

Thank you for uploading File:Gerald Massey 1856.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.
If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Why are you challenging the copyright status of an image that was taken in 1865 and threatening to remove it from WP? Since he died in 1907, any image of him should be copyright free. Please note that this is the lead image on the article on the man. Although I am listed as a user of the image, I do not find the image on my upload file, however, it is noted as a duplicate, "File:Gerald Massey 1856.jpg from Wikimedia Commons". _ _ _ _ 83d40m (talk) 15:25, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I can sympathise with the outburst above, as these template messages are very confusing even for experienced users. Try using Template:Non-free use rationale video cover on the image page. – Fayenatic London 16:42, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying to improve at least some of the warning templates by providing a link to the relevant fair-use-rationale template, which at least tells editors like yourself where to find a page that does half the work for you. – Fayenatic London 17:32, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Fayenatic] it was actually the template addict I was hoping would add If these people would just look at wahat they were tagging they could save everyone time by adding the rational instead of annoying legitimate upload-ers and deleting legitimate uploads. It is no skin off my nose if the image is deleted it just lessons the encyclopedia and removes a cover image from the site which is obviously and uncontroversial re its fair use. Changes to SRE article[edit]

Hi, I see you edited the usenet citation within the Solar Realms Elite article. Thanks for taking the time to look at that, however there are a couple problems:

1. Your "citation needed" tag is still present, even though the citation was always good and remains so.

2. The citation itself is now no longer usable. You can't click the link and read the Usenet message thread on Google groups like you could before.

Kirkman (talk) 05:54, 8 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

1. This is because by my reading of WP:RS , Forum postings need additional supporting citations. What is USENET if not a forum?
2. Citation template updated. You can now link through again, but there should be a more permenant soloution as there are other

USENET archives besides Google. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 08:40, 8 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimapia[edit]

You're going too far in commenting out mentions of this site and removing links to it from articles: Removing it from List of wikis and from List of online map services makes no sense. Yes, it shouldn't be used as a source for information in articles, and it's not appropriate for external-links sections per ELNO #15; but that doesn't mean that every reference to it needs to be expunged (it is, after all, among the mapping sites included on the GeoHack page that's the destination of the coordinates link in every geotagged WP article). Google Maps (along with many other online mapping sites) is riddled with errors as well, and should not be used as a reliable source for anything, but there's no reason to eliminate all mention of it from Wikipedia.

In addition, you have to be sensitive to individual cases; your edit to Appletree Eyot, for instance, was uncalled for. The location of the island is well established by other sources (try clicking on the coordinates link and selecting an OS map, than which there is probably no more reliable source for UK locations, from the GeoHack page), and the island's woodedness is apparent from any aerial view linked on the GeoHack page. Don't behave like a bot—you're likely to make any number of errors, as they certainly do.

I recommend, in short, that you review all the edits you've made with regard to Wikimapia and undo the ones that are unnecessary or unjustified. Deor (talk) 03:59, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'll certainly reconsider some of these Sfan00 IMG (talk) 08:19, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Since when did we need citations for the coordinates of a station? -mattbuck (Talk) 21:59, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Since it became needed for verifcation that the coordinates are from a 'reliable' source, such as the OS

or ATOC, as opposed to openly contributed sites like WikiMapia. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 22:04, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Since you have taken on this new mission to clear Wikipedia of {{Coord unsourced}}, could you please give an example where coordinates have been sourced to your satisfaction. Without any related template documentation, I don't know what references you hope to find. Do understand the use of coordinates and do you regularly add them to articles or are you just being overly officious? Secondarywaltz (talk) 22:06, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not the one clearing the {{Coord unsourced}}'s , If anything I am the one identifying them :) Sfan00 IMG (talk) 22:09, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Whoa! There is no one else involved. You created the template. You are doing all the tagging. What do you want? You can't just create this stuff without any explanation of your expectations. Secondarywaltz (talk) 22:19, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I understand the purpose of geocodes in articles. Whilst I am aware that simple facts (like a geocode) aren't copyrightable (in the US, that argument being thrashed out the last time there was a disscussion on this), without knowing the source of the coordinate data, they could have come from literally anywhere, which is not good for reliability or proving they aren't original research. The hope is that by identifying the unsourced geocodes to other contributors, they can be sourced to 'reliable' datasets, like USGS etc. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 22:25, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So I ask you again. Please give an example where coordinates have been sourced to your satisfaction, so that we can upgrade these tagged articles. Secondarywaltz (talk) 22:35, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have any examples yet, but I've updated the template documentation to give some hints on acceptable sources. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 22:42, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
One example - http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Alcatraz_Island&action=history Sfan00 IMG (talk) 22:45, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, but that was entered after you tagged it. Without any evidence to the contrary, this probably applies to almost every set of coordinates in Wikipedia. What's the point of that? Secondarywaltz (talk) 22:51, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You asked for an example , I gave you one Sfan00 IMG (talk) 22:53, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
How about the World Geodetic System? Would that be an acceptable source? ----DanTD (talk) 03:40, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I get my coords from Google Earth. -mattbuck (Talk) 04:09, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
For the UK , you could also use the OS OpenData StreetView mapping, which Commons I think had the tiles for. There is also a layer here :- http://os.openstreetmap.org/ (Which zooms to a nominal 1:10000 optimum)
I usually do that myself. That's sort of why I figure instead of eliminating the coordinates template, the could just be replaced with something like Google Earth. Mind you, they're not always perfect. ----DanTD (talk) 04:26, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
@mattbuck and DanTD, I appreciate your suggestion of using GoogleEarth is in good faith, but you might want to read the following comments from OpenStreetMap - https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/FAQ#Why_don.27t_you_just_use_Google_Maps.2Fwhoever_for_your_data.3F (as well as Google's ToU). The position taken (at OSM) seems to be that Google don't permit geocode capture. Whilst a simple 'fact' can't be copyrighted in the US (as previous discussions on this determined), many of the coordinates that are either directly or indirectly sourced to or obtained from Google, might not be respecting Google's terms. There were when I last checked at least 6 million uses of {{coord}} in Wikipedia, Whilst I appreciate that most of these were added in good faith, 6 million coordinates is still a substantial amount of 'derived' data, which could create problems for some downstream users. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 10:56, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I found that you've tagged some National Register of Historic Places articles with having unsourced coordinates. It's possible that some NRHP articles may have stand-alone coordinates that are unsourced, but the infobox coordinates and other infobox information in those articles almost always come from the National Register's NRIS or the National Park System's new FOCUS database. This is also true of the city, county, and state lists of sites on the NRHP. One that I just corrected, Chase's Theater and Riggs Building is an example. You can use this tool that we use to easily confirm whether or not a NRHP site's coordinates came from the database. Enter its NRHP reference number, in this case 78003053. Thanks. Altairisfar (talk) 12:47, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is it possible to 'inline' cite those? If not I would suggest leaving a clear note on the page (in the lead) for example.Sfan00 IMG (talk)
The inline citation is already there, at the bottom of the infobox. That's standard practice across the many thousands of NRHP articles. Altairisfar (talk) 12:54, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, That reduces the number of {{unsourced coord}} tgas to be issued, if it can be assumed NHRP data is PDUSGov :) Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:55, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the federal databases are public domain. Altairisfar (talk) 13:04, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Secondary point. It occurs to me that it is impossible to add inline citations for geocoding data to the infobox and the titlebar (where the data is displayed) since whatever you put in the lat/long fields gets transformed into a geohack link, and therefore a citation would fuck that up. -mattbuck (Talk) 12:08, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Because of various points raised, I'm reverting a lot of my attempted cleanup efforts. This needs a lot more disscussion,

and I'm not going to get into endless arguments. Reverting edits and let someone else resolve this. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:09, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Coord how-to[edit]

You were bold, I reverted, now it's time to discuss.

The purpose of the how-to is to help people get started using the template without having to wade through a lot of documentation. Everything we add to the how-to makes it less likely that people will bother reading it. "Source" is a parameter used mainly by bots. It is rarely used by human editors, so it does not belong in the how-to. —Stepheng3 (talk) 15:45, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, so you are quite happy to encourtage people to be lazy about citiations? Sfan00 IMG (talk) 15:50, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't care if other people are lazy. I care about improving the encyclopedia and encouraging others to do the same. We cite sources for claims so that they can be verified in case they should prove contention. Since most coordinates are easily verified via the GeoHacks link, there's little need to cite a source. I situations where I wish to cite a source for a coordinate, I use "notes=", not "source:". —Stepheng3 (talk) 16:02, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That figures, I STILL think the How to should "actively encourage" people to note which mapping/imaging provider

was used, either in the notes field or in a source: parameter. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 16:09, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your opinion does not outweigh the existing consensus. Please revert your change. —Stepheng3 (talk) 17:06, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your cooperation. As far as encouraging people to record the sources they use, you might start by collecting examples where failure to do so has caused problems in the past. Bring those to the attention of WP:GEO or the responsible editors. My two cents, —Stepheng3 (talk) 12:42, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Template:coord unsourced[edit]

Yup, I agree that it'd be better if this was just a hidden category. Two things, though: 1. It would be advisable to make a proposal to do this on the geocoord talk page, and the template talk pages first, so as to get agreement. 2. I'm not in a position to play any template games until tuesday or wednesday next week, and even then I might not be the best person to do so - it's not my normal line of business. Happy if you go ahead and start the ball rolling, but equally happy if we defer until the middle of next week when I can get properly involved. --Tagishsimon (talk) 12:23, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I couldn't geo-code any images if my life depended on it. I know that Commons offers that option, though. ----DanTD (talk) 16:50, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File copyright problem with File:PurpleCatRambo.jpg[edit]

The photo's creator put it in the public domain, and I uploaded it on his behalf back in 2008, forwarding the permission e-mail to OTRS. For reasons I don't understand, the OTRS operator tagged it for a GFDL license instead of a PD one. Another helpful soul later removed the license tag in order to "standardize" it. However, if you'd bothered to read the file description comments, you would've seen my original assertion that the image had been released. You've wasted time and effort, and not just your own. Please take a vacation from Wikipedia. —Stepheng3 (talk) 17:48, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, I will not be taking a vacation because of tag (wrongly) placed in good faith. Thanks for fixing it :)

Authorship information for File:Reveille(2).jpg[edit]

Jazzmanian has not been active on WIkipedia since he did a lot of work on bugle call images in 2007, so I'll take the liberty of answering your recent comment on his talk page: The authorship of Reveille is unknown, but the melody has been around long enough to be solidly in the public domain. I have seen it in an appendix to A New System of Infantry Tactics... (published in 1867) by Emory Upton.

In any case, File:Reveille(2).jpg is not used, and may be safely deleted. The English and German Wikipedia articles on Reveille use a more compactly written version from the Commons, File:Reveille with repeat.JPG. Best regards, __ Just plain Bill (talk) 13:31, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, But I didn't tage it for deletion, because with old musical works, there might have been variations Sfan00 IMG (talk) 13:32, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have tagged it with Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion#G6.
Since this bugle call is not so much a musical work as it is a signal, variations are discouraged in the communities where it appears. Slight written differences such as slurs and staccato marks still refer to the same call. __ Just plain Bill (talk) 15:45, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

{{coord}}[edit]

Please be more careful when adding coordinates to articles or messing with the ones that are already present. Here, for example, you added a capitalized "landmark" parameter (it must begin with a lowercase letter for it to be parsed properly) and misspelled "region"; here you used a _ character within the source parameter (that character is parsed as separating parameters), and you've also used the invalid & character in giving sources; here you used the invalid region code "UK" and here mistyped the region code as "GB_LDN" rather than "GB-LDN"—the list goes on. We all make mistakes, but I think you need to learn more about the way geotagging operates and to check your work more thoroughly. Deor (talk) 13:58, 20 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

retitled image[edit]

"retitled image" is not a suitable reason for speedy deletion, so please don't tag redirects with it. I deleted two images because they were new enough for R3, but deleting a filename that's existed since 2005 is a very bad idea as long as the image itself still exists. Nyttend (talk) 12:14, 21 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You claim they aren't speedy. Any objections to RFD? Sfan00 IMG (talk)
Yes, because "if a redirect is reasonably old (or a redirect is created as a result of moving a page that has been there for quite some time), then it is quite possible that its deletion will break links in old, historical versions of some other articles—such an event is very difficult to envision and even detect." Although grateful for the improved citation in the article, your description is not complete, since you did not mention the changes you made to the formatting. These changes made the page less uniform, since you did not make the format change universally, and harder to read, since by changing the yellow font for FCB, you left black font over dark background. Also, the formatting, as it was, helped distinguished the statistics for one team from the other. Did you use a bot for the citation changes? Can you do the changes to the citation, leaving the formatting the same? Can I simply undue your changes and let you copy the changes in citation again? Thanks in advance.--Coquidragon (talk) 18:18, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nick Brandt Article[edit]

Hi Sfan00 IMG, I would like to replace a couple images on Mr Brandt's page. I have lighter versions so they don't look so dark, which means they are in a Tiff file, not Jpeg so not to loose the contrast. I keep getting errors when I try to upload telling me it's not the same file, I just don't know what I need to do to make this work. I have asked others here with no avail. Any help would be great! Thank youThisandthem (talk) 12:11, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

For godsakes, that is a picture I personally took of a public artwork, and as such falls under *any* meaningful definition of a derived work. The copyright is mine to give away under Creative Commons. This is copyright paranoia run amok! Peter G Werner (talk) 18:51, 25 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am afraid that a picture focusing on a 2D work is still an infringement of the said 2D work. We need to change this into fair use, or contact the artist and ask for a free license permission. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 17:41, 26 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Non-free rationale for File:Visual C++ Icon.png[edit]

Hi, Sfan00! The non-fre rationale for File:Visual C++ Icon.png is that it is the logo of Visual C++ and is used to represent it as-such in the article. It's a necessary (or beenficial) addition to the article, because without it, we would not have a logo in the article about the program. Just check any article on a propreity software product that has a non-free icon/logo (or screenshot) in its infobox, the same rationale applies here as well.

If you reply to this message on your talk page, please be sure to let me know by leaving talkback tag on my talk page. (Enclose it in {{}} and use your user name as its argument.) Thank you. Arjun G. Menon (talk · mail) 19:37, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Negated_translated_sigmoid_function.png[edit]

This file is claimed to be used under Wikipedia's policy for non-free content but has no explanation as to why it is permitted under the policy. Non-free images need a rationale each time they are used in an article. A rationale must be included on this image description page. Unless at least one rationale is provided, the image will be deleted after Friday, 7 September 2012. Please remove this template if a rationale is provided.

I appear to have fixed it so I have a reason that it applies under the fair use of non-free content policy. Essentially my screenshot is of Microsoft Excel, and my copyright guidelines are from Microsoft. I adjusted the summary to show that it is from Microsoft and its product, Excel.

Sfan00, I've noticed this evening you have been periodically speedy delete a number of EMT147's photos since Aug 2010, Doc has uploaded those in good faith as his research may indicated they were in public domain. I've known Dimitri for over 10 years and know of his accuracy and honesty; and have have work with him side by side in Restorations at Wings Over the Rockies Museum. He is now a medical MD, and has little time to wiki since ER has a higher priority. Please review what you have deleted, and do some research and try to validate and update his photos to make them "correct" for wiki. His work is accurate and with your help, you can help validate it in correct wiki-format. Thank you so much, Lance....LanceBarber (talk) 05:19, 1 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Audio file changes[edit]

Thanks for adding the licensing templates to the files I uploaded, but I'm not sure if they were necessary. In any case, can you keep the rationale sections and fill in the purpose (which appears red otherwise)? I restored them with this edit to File:Palace ASAP Rocky.ogg. Fair use rationale for HA1cover.jpg[edit]

Hello, I wanted to provide the rationale why usage of this (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:HA1cover.jpg) file on Wikipedia is fair use:

  • It is the cover art of the first issue of Greek far-right group "Golden Dawn"
  • It contains a symbol/logo that was used for identification of this group
  • The symbol contained on it is of historical importance, as (a) it helps identify certain nazi groups, (b) it helps us document and trace Golden Dawn's ideological roots.

I hope this helps. Thank you. Moderatelyaverage (talk) 15:16, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I uploaded a new screenshot and so the original image that got flagged is now an oprhan.

The new image has rationale specified on the page:

Thanks for helping to improve Wikipedia.

Hey, can you delete the old version of MGKLaceUp.jpg? That's the Deluxe Version cover, and the Standard Version's cover was revealed only now. Thank you.SrGangsta (talk) 13:08, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I added the rationale but since I'm not familiar with fair-use I left the warning template in the article, please review it. Regards, Plushy (talk) 15:26, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:Team america march.ogg[edit]

Please use has-NFUR in this type of situation. Files should not be tagged for deletion simply because they do not have a table explaining the fair use.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 08:53, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That template is up for deletion Sfan00 IMG (talk) 09:06, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I saw that. I could rewrite the Team America FUR with a nice shiny table, but it would not say much different from what it says already. In the meantime, please avoid tagging files for deletion unless they lack a FUR altogether.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 09:08, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
