Solomon Rapids

Hello. I was going to add the population data to Solomon Rapids, Kansas based on this link to the 2010 census, but as I'm not familiar with political divisions I can't tell if that area and the Solomon Rapids Township are the same thing. The latter is included on List of Kansas townships and on Mitchell County, Kansas#Townships (not wikilinked), which is showing data from the 2000 census. Also that table states the coordinates to be 39°31′19″N 98°12′58″W, but that doesn't bring anything noticeable on GoogleMaps or OpenStreetMap, as opposed to the coordinates 39°28′25″N 98°11′33″W from Solomon Rapids, Kansas. As Solomon Rapids (the town) is unincorporated, even though it may have a population, it is not counted as separate from the township. In Mitchell County, only Beloit is considered independent from the township population. So, effectively the 65 population is for the entire township, not just the town. The coordinates in the table of Mitchell County townships places the person roughly in the center of the township whereas the coordinates for the town places you in the town. You can add that number to the townships table on the Mitchell County page, however. Bhall87Four Scoreand Seven 00:45, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

I read the Eureka, Kansas page in May on or about the 25th. The section regarding the origin of the place name was in error. I made the mistake of correcting a citation of allegorical evidence with more allegorical evidence (that also happened to be correct).

The entire section was removed and I understand that. I have a photo from the spring at Eureka, KS that explains the origin of the place name and would at least like that photo of the monument at the spring added to the page if not the photo and the proper explanation of the origin of the place name.

I am brand spanking new at this and while I know that I could thud and blunder about on the page and wrestle with the keeper of the page until something acceptable happens I would like some direction as to how to go about, at the very least, updating the page with a photo of the monument from the spring that explains the origin of the place name.

Norcatur, Kansas

Is this town really in both Decatur and Norton Counties? The article says Decatur only but this[1] says both. I just wanted some input or possible verification before making any changes. Thanks....William 13:37, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

The key word that both the Norcatur article and the site you posted use is "on" "Norcatur is located on the Norton/Decatur County line" and if you look at a map of Norcatur it is located on the county line but in Decatur County. At one time it may have been in both counties but now the town is wholly in Decatur. Bhall87Four Scoreand Seven 22:52, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

John W. Leedy

Any chance someone could add any info on his time as Governor as Kansas? The article seems to imply that he was most notable for that but the text only talks about his political career in Alberta. – Connormah (talk) 07:20, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Before my significant copy editing and addition to the article tonight, more information about his single term as governor was already in the article. Leedy didn't really have much of a political career in Kansas, despite many years in the State Senate. Unless anyone cares to delve deeper into his career, I believe that the article now adequately addresses his time in Kansas politics. Spacini (talk) 02:07, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Wikiproject Kansas

Hi there, writing to you because you are a member of the wikiproject kansas. created a GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) group for kansas, mailing list for topeka and a facebook page linked from here Wikipedia:Meetup/Topeka. would like to organize some more meetups at different historic sites in topeka (and even other places if we can find someone with a car), go there and take photos, collect information and work on the articles. It could be a great group event. please let me know what you think, and sign up on the mailing list if you like. Also if you know of GLAM sites anywhere in kansas, please add them to the list. Also I would like to organize a photo contest for Kansas. you can send me a mail if you like as well, my mail is on my user page.

Black Bob article has potential

The Black Bob Band of Shawnee has a great deal of historical source material available, and it has potential to become a B-class article or better. Court House photos project

Bringing over this project to photograph and add Kansas county court houses be added to their respective articles, and possibly the corresponding county seat article, from the previous archive now that the WP:Kansas group is active and split from the WP:United States group.

Help is needed adding them to their respective county pages by adding the following to the County Infobox template

The following counties do not have court house photos. Contributors, please delete the counties as the photos are added.

List of people updates

Hey gang, just completed List of people from McPherson County, Kansas. As a navigational aide, I also created List of lists of people from Kansas a while back. I don't think necessarily that every county deserves a list (List of people from Republic County, Kansas failed at AFD) but I think it can be helpful. In all honesty, "List of people from ..." articles can be virtually endless. I have mixed feelings about them and prefer to support the idea of tagging an article with a "Category:People from __" as an alternative to creating an article. It has some drawbacks, the main one being a novice researcher may not know how to perform a search to obtain a particular category. But, at least it's easier to maintain and can still provide someone with a "list" should they stumble upon an article wherein the subject has the category added. Categories are good! But so much more can be put in a list... what they did, when they lived, a photo, etc. A category just contains the name of the article. Again, I don't think every county or city should have a stand-alone list, but some groups have a relatively high volume.--Paul McDonald (talk) 20:54, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

Split WikiProject Kansas from WikiProject United States (undo previous merger)

I propose that WikiProject Kansas' merger into WikiProject United States be reversed and that WikiProject Kansas become a standalone project once again. In this discussion it was decided that WikiProject Kansas would become supported by/merged into WikiProject United States. I supported the move then, hoping that it would bring new life to WikiProject Kansas, but it has not done so. In fact, the only real effect I notice is the change to the WikiProject banner, which now looks quite disheartening. I honestly think that WikiProject Kansas could probably do better as a standalone project than as part of a huge conglomerate project that is going to pay it little to no attention.   • I support it as well. I had hoped that getting the projects together would get them to collaborate but it just caused everyone to fight and become defensive. I abandoned supporting the WPUS projects a couple months ago after trying for 3 years to make it work. Let me know if you need help fixing the template.   • Support the US project has done very little to support the interests of this project. I don't think it's malicious, I just think they don't really care all that much. If they'd pitch in and help, I wouldn't mind. But we're still functioning as a "stand-alone" project in practice. Might as well make it reality.--Paul McDonald (talk) 03:44, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
  • Support as long as we discuss a plan of attack before doing it. I assume it will be incremental, but I would rather discuss it up front and everyone understand the changes. How do we handle all the existing WikiProject templates in the thousands of Kansas related articles, for example: Talk:Kansas City, Kansas and Talk:Walton, Kansas. If we convert from the US to KS project, then we need to be careful about NOT messing up the class and importance fields, because it did happen during the conversion to US. • Sbmeirow • Talk • 05:39, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
    • I noticed this myself, and I was just going through and altering some things. I almost think we'll probably need to have a bot do it then double check them all by hand. If we offer up some to-be-created barnstar/award I'm sure we could get some outside editors to help with the assessment checking. I also think the by hand check could do some good; WP:KANSAS' assessments are so out of whack that I found a couple GAs that the project had assessed as stubs, so maybe it's time for a complete review of our current article assessments.     • Comment, this wikiproject appears to be pretty active in its own rite, so I can understand a move by its active participants that they would see not being part of a national Wikiproject as being a non-determining factor in its normal editing operations. My understanding was that WikiProjects in the United States, who are not very active, were adopted under the WPUS umbrella in the hopes of getting more eyes on situations within the smaller WikiProject's scope that they would not otherwise get. I see the WT:USA page as kind of a Central Discussion noticeboard, as the more eyes on a discussion, the potential for more active participants in the discussion, the wider the consensus that can be formed.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 14:26, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Moving forward

Alright, so this discussion seems to have gotten about as far as it will, and there seems to be strong support to spin off WikiProject Kansas again. Does anyone have any thoughts on where to proceed from here? Ks0stm (T•C•G•E) 11:12, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Here are a couple things that might help:
  1. Revert {{WikiProject Kansas}} to a state prior to being support by WPUS.
  2. Modify {{WikiProject Kansas}} to include any logic or categories currently supported with {{WikiProject United States}} that isn't in {{WikiProject Kansas}} and is wanted.
  3. Delete any categories that are not wanted for us with this project/template
  4. Remove WPKS from the supported projects list of WPUS - Done
  5. Get a botop (bot) to convert the banners from WPUS to WPKS. Note from User:Sbmeirow: The existing "class=" and "importance=" parameter need to be preserved during the conversion! Either of there parameters might not exist, or might exist with or without a value. WPUS conversion messed up a bunch of these parameters (I'm not sure how many). I recommend to do it in stages. Do some pages, then give everyone some period of time to examine the changes for conversion problems, then do either another bigger chunk or all the rest (TBD).
  6. Update the WikiProject Kansas project page to reflect these changes vice WPUS
  7. Updated Wikipedia:WikiProject Kansas/to do
  8. Removed WP Kansas from Documentation of WPUS
  9. Remove the transcluded WPKS members list from the WPUS members list
    1. The banner should not remove other projects, just Kansas so they will need to be careful
  10. Remove the Kansas Logic from {{WikiProject United States}}
Once they are converted the project members can go through and verify assessments and importances.
