Hello.

Okay, so, what's going with my contributions? - Zhou Yu (talk) 04:16, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not trying to sound rude, but I'd like to know -- thanks! :) - Zhou Yu (talk) 22:59, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I tried to reply last night and thought I did, but apparently not. I asked another editor who knows about such thins. Your answer is at User_talk:Jeff_G.#Quick_question. You'll have to bump a bugzilla to get a dev's attention. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:04, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Do you think you could see if you could do it? It seems rather complicated. Not only that, but I don't have Bugzilla. - Zhou Yu (talk) 23:09, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've re-opened the bug, but I won't be able to keep an eye on it, so you should probably set up a bugzilla account and add yourself to the CC list. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:36, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, H.J.! - Zhou Yu (talk) 23:39, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm starting to get really worried. No replies on Bugzilla, and I still don't have any of the edits I made before the username change. - Zhou Yu (talk) 23:29, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Peer review

Hello there! I spotted your name on the Peer review list of volunteers, and thought that as you like bios, I'd ask you to have a look at James Cagney.

I hope your admining hasn't had as bad an impact on your editing as it has on mine, and that you've got some time to have a look over this. I've got it to GA, but before I really think about FA, it needs some other eyes on it. I'm good at copyediting other people's stuff, but not my own! Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, GedUK  14:03, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sadly I don;t have time at the minute. Real life issues mean I probably won't be on much for the next few weeks. Sorry, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:21, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I updated 2010 Chicago Marathon just now. Can you check and see if it's ready for ITN now? Thanks in advance. ~DC We Can Work It Out 04:23, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your assistance please

User:Iqinn tagged User:Geo Swan/working/Khalid Khawaja as an attack page.

You confirmed that deletion request. We are all human, and capable of error. But I find it hard to believe I created an "attack page". And I request you email me the contents of that page.

If this was not an "attack page", can I ask whether you considered declining the speedy request, and telling the tagger to use another channel to get their concern addressed?

Wikipedia is not a battleground. If I have genuinely lapsed from policy, without realizing it, then I suggest it is both in my personal interest, and in the interests of the project in general, for those who have a concern to make a good faith effort to explain that concern. Geo Swan (talk) 10:07, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Since I'm not an admin I can't see the content of the page, but note that as well as attack pages, unsourced negative BLPs are also eligible for deletion as G10; if the page only made negative claims about a living person, and without reliable sourcing, that's probably why it was speedily deleted. GiftigerWunsch [TALK] 10:11, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) It wasn't an attack page. {{db-g10}} also covers "negative unsourced BLP, as GW notes. This page falls under the latter, as it implied negative links between a living person and an organisation. TFOWR 11:18, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There was no mistake, the page made negative assertions about a presumably living person, which qualifies it for deletion under the second part of G10. You shouldn't make negative comments about living persons anywhere on WP except in articles, backed up by reliable sources. It wasn't, though, an attack page. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:43, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Back in 2005 I was still a newbie. If I worked on a draft of an article on Khawaja in user space, and then decided I had enough references to put an article on Khalid Khawaja into article space I should have moved my user space draft. But, with only a few thousand edits under my belt I didn't know this. I suggest this does not make me the author of an "attack page".
Nobody's accused you of authoring an attack page. The page contained negative unsourced information about a presumably living person. That's another part of the same criterion that deals with attack pages rather like G3 deals with both vandalism and hoaxes. I removed autopatrolled from you because you have various notices on your talk page warning you about problematic image uploads (autopatrolled affects image uploads, not just new articles). Nothing to do with the main reason for my visit to your userspace, if that's what's worrying you. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:54, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think it is fair to say that the heads-up from the nomination is an accusation of creating an attack page. It explicitly starts:

Please do not make statements attacking people or groups of people. Wikipedia has a strict policy against personal attacks. Attack pages and images are not tolerated by Wikipedia and are speedily deleted. Users who continue to create or repost such pages and images in violation of our biographies of living persons policy will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Thank you.

I asked you to email me a copy of the contents of the deleted page. I was under the impression that this was a routine courtesy administrators offered good faith contributors.
I asked you to compare the deleted material with the version where I started the article in main article space. I thought this was a reasonable request.
We are all human, and thus fallible. Even the most experienced administrator is human, and thus fallible. My record shows I own up when I realize I have made a mistake, and try and fix it. One concern I have is that some administrators routinely do not inform other contributors when they exercise their administrator authority.
I know I am fallible. If I am innocently lapsing from some policy I do not want an administrator to speedy delete articles I have started, without telling me. If they think I am lapsing from policy I want to be told. I'll stop whatever I was doing, if I am actually lapsing form policy. This will save not only my time, but it will save other people's time, because if it is a genuine lapse, I'll stop, and other contributors won't have to clean up after future lapses.
I think good faith contributors should feel entitled to be informed of any time an administrator thinks they were authorized to use their administrator powers, because no good faith contributor wants to make the same mistake twice.
No offense, administrators are subject to normal human error, and make good faith mistakes. Earlier today I asked another administrator to please reconsider a decision they made. They had no problem reconsidering their initial decision.
However, when administrators don't inform contributors when they exercised authority, there is no opportunity for a question to prompt reconsideration, and those administrator's occasional good faith mistakes will stand. This is, IMO a second good reason for administrators to do their best to exercise their authority in as open and transparent a manner as possible.
Now, I did get a heads-up that User:Geo Swan/working/Khaldid Khawaja might be deleted. But I did not get a heads-up that you were considering removing my autopatrol permission. Would you please consider the possibility that there is value in informing good faith contributors that you felt it was appropriate to exercise your administrator authority? Geo Swan (talk) 21:53, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I get it, although I disagree with that policy. Here is a quick userspace draft (I couldn't even make a userpage with the correct title!): User:Chubbles/kthei.

I've moved it for you. It's less than ideal, but it's designed to prevent page-move vandalism and it's not very often you need three question marks in a title! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:12, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks. Chubbles (talk) 18:12, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's because ITN isn't long enough to match TFA. –xenotalk 20:45, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm inclined to leave it for now. Perfect balance is incredibly difficult to achieve and ITN will be far too long on about 3 hours. MP balancing is tricky! There'll probably be something new going on ITN before 0000 UTC anyway. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:52, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your opinion please

Hi HJ, I've come to ask your opinion on something. I'm doing a GA review at the moment, and noticed that the article is extremely similar to one of the sources. It's certainly not a clear-cut copy-paste copyright infringement, but, well, take a look yourself: source, original version of the article, current version of the article (compare for example the 'early life' vs 'life history' sections). I'm not usually given to copyright paranoia, especially on an article which is about to make GA and has been heavily edited since, but it's essentially just paraphrasing every sentence in the source. I asked the author to explain the similarities, you can see his response at the very bottom of this page. What do you think should be done about it (if anything)? question

Would you suggest Huggle or Igloo as an antivandalism tool? Inka888Come yell at me! 23:50, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker)Huggle. It's more powerful at the moment (igloo is still testing). If you don't want to install stuff on your computer, though, igloo is the way to go. Airplaneman 23:52, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker)I would have to agree with Airplaneman on that, although Huggle tends to crash on me for some reason which is why time to time I use igloo.--iGeMiNix/What's up?/My Stuff 23:55, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Huggle, by far. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 01:42, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Huggle is the best on a Windows PC. Since Huggle doesn't work on Macs, Igloo is the way to go on a Mac. ~NerdyScienceDude 01:48, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
HJ prefers using Igloo. HeyMid (contributions) 09:57, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What's going on with huggle lately? --Inka888ContribsTalk 03:14, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
IRC down most of the time and when it's up it crashes a lot. Access Denied [FATAL ERROR] 03:17, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So you would suggest Igloo? Inka888ContribsTalk 04:27, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Access Denied [FATAL ERROR] 04:34, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest Huggle. Contrary to what Airplaneman says, you do not need to install anything; Huggle is a standalone program. The IRC problem is fixed, and Huggle doesn't crash at all for me; maybe that's just a client-side problem with Access Denied. MC10 (TCGBL) 18:53, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Uh, I think Airplaneman's point was that you need to install Huggle ;-) Twinkle, say, doesn't require even a standalone program - it's all JavaScripty magic. Huggle is also a .net application - you need either Windows, or Wine. I had nae luck with Huggle-on-Wine, so I'm still using Twinkle. Never tried Igloo - the concept scares me... TFOWR 19:06, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've never used Huggle, but I like Igloo because it's very easy to use but more importantly, it doesn't require any more effort to start using than adding a line to a .js page. I'm reluctant to try Huggle because you have to download the software. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:15, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Is igloo faster? Inka888ContribsTalk 02:51, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Just to throw in my two cents, I have used Igloo since soon after it first came out, and I think that it is fantastic. It still has some bugs, obviously, due to the fact that it isn't finished, but that is not a reason to not use it. Instead, I would think that it is a reason to use it, because Ale jrb can get feedback on how it works, and improve it more. Then, we could get to the point where annoying people like Airplaneman might consider using it. :P ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 03:00, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try both of them and see which one I like better. Inka888ContribsTalk 03:16, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please be careful. Igloo is very powerful therefore very capable of making huge mess in a matter of seconds. Access Denied [FATAL ERROR] 04:03, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Igloo won't work. I can't get it to install. Looks like the same thing that happened with lupin. --Inka888ContribsTalk 21:21, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well it looks like it's 5-4 in favor of the move, 6-4 if you include the proposer. Not really consensus, though I think a more detailed look at the arguments (which I don't feel confident doing) may be able to provide a clearer answer. Soap 11:42, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, WP:Consensus also expressly ruels out a mere vote tally. the arguements were rebutted against the "coup"Lihaas (talk) 04:16, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

G10 declined. Could you please explain...

You write:

declined. It's obvious that there is no intent to disparage here, it's a page about what has happened to a person that happens to contain a few possibly negative assertions as opposed to one comprised entirely of such assertions

I think the question is not if there is an intent to disparage. The question is if the content disparage and i think it does. Most of it is in addition un-sourced and sometimes negative. You might not be fully informed about the case.

Just to bring forward one example that is not fun at all: User:Geo_Swan/Guantanamo/Ibrahim_Zeidan_reports_Abu_Zubaydah_image_used_as_an_interrogation_tool#Funny_aspects_of_Abu_Zubaydah.27s_claims This section disparage the subject. This section makes fun about various statements Abu Zubaydah gave. There is nothing funny here. Tortured or not this section disparage the subject by making fun of statements he gave during his detention. No reason to stick to such content. I would like to ask you to reconsider. Regards IQinn (talk) 14:52, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) G10 specifies "Pages that disparage or threaten their subject or some other entity, and serve no other purpose." The intent of this page was clearly to create an article. Yes, some of the content does disparage the subject. But no, that's not the sole purpose of the page. Let the MfD handle it. TFOWR 14:58, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That is actually an interesting point. :) I must admit i am quite new to speedy deletion rules. But i do not sure that was intended to be an article. There were already years old articles about Ibrahim Zeidan and Abu Zubaydah when this page was created and the creator knew that.IQinn (talk) 15:16, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Because he also adds some personal beliefs, it's more like a blog than an article right now ... but G10 does not apply, and we usually can't WP:IAR and make it easily change. (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 15:36, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Oops, you're right! I'd imagine the page was a sandbox, for planned changes to the original article (I'm doing the same thing here, for this article). But the point still stands: the page does serve a purpose other than disparaging or threatening its subject. It doesn't fit neatly into G10: letting the MfD run its course is the better option. TFOWR 15:39, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So let the MfD handle it. Regards. IQinn (talk) 15:44, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer question

Hi HJ. I made an edit (actually a revert) on the Yom Kippur War article and my edit was not automatically accepted but "pending review." Since I've been granted reviewer status, I found myself in the odd position of accepting my own pending edit. Here is the subject edit and here is the revision history for the article. I'm obviously not a new user or an IP, so why do you think this occurred? Software problem? I'll note that it's never happened before.--Jiujitsuguy (talk) 04:30, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Now there's a name I haven't seen in a while. How are you these days? I had a look and it seems you reverted to this version by an IP which, I'm guessing, hadn't been reviewed, so you had to accept the new version. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:30, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your input is requested

I have started an RfC on inappropriate userboxes, i.e. those that don't follow the introductory paragraph at WP:UBX:

"A userbox (commonly abbreviated as UBX) is a small colored box ... designed to appear only on a Wikipedian's user page as a communicative notice about the user, in order to directly (or even indirectly) help Wikipedians collaborate more effectively on articles."

How does a userbox about a user's own preferences in regards to what topics on Wikipedia they hate and what type of sexually explicit material they like and actively view help Wikipedians collaborate with one another? Which is the question I am raising.

This introductory paragraph over at WP:UBX contradicts WP:NOTCENSORED so I'd like you to weigh in at WT:UBX, it'll only take 5 minutes of your time. I've sent this message because the topic has not had much community input

Hi Andranikpasha, HJ Mitchell asked me to take a look at this - so I'm taking a look into it now ;-) TFOWR 16:07, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

IGLOO

I imported the script into my vector.js and it will not work. I'm not getting the tools for some reason. A while back I put a script in my monobook.js. Since my monobook.js exists is that causing a problem for my vector.js. --Inka888ContribsTalk 22:15, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Have you bypassed your cache? That may fix it, as it's unlikely the Monobook thing will affect it. THENEWMONO 22:19, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've bypassed the cache. I even completely cleared it. Is there a way for my monobook to be deleted? Inka888ContribsTalk 22:41, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Deleted User:Inka 888/monobook.js, but that's not the problem. What browser are you using? Safari and IE aren't officially supported. Otherwise, igloo should show up in your toolbox... Airplaneman 23:05, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I use firefox almost always unless I'm contributing from my phone. Inka888ContribsTalk 01:07, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I just cleared my cache and it still wont work. Inka888ContribsTalk 01:13, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Is full javascript enabled? (see User:Ale_jrb/Scripts/igloo#Setup for details) Airplaneman 01:22, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
How do you enable full javascript? Inka888ContribsTalk 03:24, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Tools --> options --> Content --> Enable javascript Access Denied [FATAL ERROR] 03:53, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Would that be through preferences. I didn't see the option in there. Inka888ContribsTalk 04:11, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, under the content tab in preferences. Access Denied [FATAL ERROR] 04:15, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have a content tab.

I meant firefox preferences. Access Denied [FATAL ERROR] 04:43, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Still not working. I already had full javascript enabled. Inka888ContribsTalk 04:58, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Odd. Try it in Google chrome. That's the browser I use and I've never had any problems with it. In monobook, you get a link in the second box below the search bar but I don't know where it is in vector because vector is a horrible, horrible, horrible skin! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:00, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A couple of things spring to mind: firstly, HTTPS doesn't work - you'll need to use the regular (HTTP) server. Secondly, define "not working" ;-) For example, when I start Igloo with the secure server (HTTPS) by clicking on the "Igloo | (launch)" link I get a pop-up window that displays text, apparently successfully, until it gets as far as "Warning: igloo server returned an error: token-mismatch: your request token could not be verified by the server. Loading stopped." "Not working" covers a multitude of sins, and doesn't aid debugging... TFOWR 11:18, 18 October 2010 (UTC) I'm also using monobook, with vector your milage may vary... Vector is evil. TFOWR 11:19, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Chrome and Vector (I think), It works perfectly fine for me. :)--Talktome(Intelati) 16:12, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please restore this article for me? We've received OTRS permission for it. VernoWhitney (talk) 17:16, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done. (HJ's internet connection is flaky right now (3G, not wired) so I'm hi-jacking some stuff like this. Probably a good opportunity for me to rip-off Courcelles, and say: hey! VernoWhitney! When are going to get your own mop!?) TFOWR 17:20, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks! And in answer to your question, hopefully soon. ^_^ VernoWhitney (talk) 17:25, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
