Shahrukh Khan (Hindi: शाहरुख़ ख़ान, Urdu: شاهرخ خان), pronunciation: /ʃɑːhrux xɑːn/, born November 2, 1965, is a highly acclaimed Bollywood actor, producer, and current host of the popular game show, Kaun Banega Crorepati. He is married to Gauri Khan and they have two children, son Aryan and daughter Suhana.

Biography

Early life

Shahrukh was born to a family of Indian freedom fighters. His father Taj Mohammed Khan, a freedom activist of Pathan background[1], and Lateef Fatima,[2] who was the daughter of Major General Shah Nawaz Khan of the Janjua Rajput clan[3], who served as a General in the Indian National Army of Subash Chandra Bose.[4]

Shah Rukh Khan's father came to India from the Kissa Kahani Bazaar in Peshawar, before the Partition of India[5], whilst his mother's family came from Rawalpindi[6].

Khan has a sister named Shehnaz Lalarukh.[7] Khan attended St. Columba's School where he was accomplished in sports, drama and academics. He won the Sword of Honour, an annual award bequeathed to the student who embodies most the spirit of the school.[citation needed] He later attended the Hansraj College (1985-1988) to earn an Honors degree in Economics.[citation needed]

After this, he studied for a Masters Degree in Mass Communications at Jamia Millia Islamia University. [citation needed]

Career

He started his career in 1988 by appearing in the television series Fauji playing the role of Commando Abhimanyu Rai.[8] He then played a minor role in the serial Circus in 1989 [9], which depicted the life of circus performers. That same year he also had a minor role in the television film In Which Annie Gives it Those Ones. After the death of his parents Khan moved from New Delhi to Mumbai for a fresh start in 1991.[10] He made his Bollywood film debut in Deewana (1992) which was a super hit and launched his career in Bollywood.[11]

He got critical acclaim for his performances in Baazigar and Darr (1993), in which he played anti-hero and obsessive-lover roles respectively. In 1995 he starred in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge which was a critical and commercial success[12] and has entered its twelfth year in Mumbai theaters, grossing over one billion rupees in all.[13]

Khan went on to frequently collaborate with directors Yash Chopra and Karan Johar and starred in several of their commercially successful films in the romantic genre including Dil to Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Mohabbatein (2000), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) and Veer-Zaara (2004).[14] Khan also won critical praise for his performances in Anjaam (1994), Dil Se (1998), Hey Ram (2000), Swades (2004), and Paheli (2005) which were not as successful commercially.[15]

In 2006 he once again collaborated with Karan Johar for the multi-starrer Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna which has been very successful in India and overseas. That same year he played the title role in Don, a remake of the 1978 film Don which was also successful.

Khan also produces films and co-owns Dreamz Unl, a film production company, with Juhi Chawla and director Aziz Mirza. The first two of the films he produced and starred in, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000) and Asoka (2001) were box office failures.[16][17]

His third film, as a producer and star, Chalte Chalte (2003), was the first hit from his production house.[18]. In 2004 he produced and starred in Main Hoon Na which was produced by another of his production houses, Red Chillies Entertainment,[19] and was also a hit at the box office. In 2005 he produced and starred in a fantasy film titled Paheli, which was India's selection for the Academy Awards (foreign films category) but did not win. At the box office Paheli was a disappointment.[20] That same year he also co-produced the film Kaal with Karan Johar and performed an item number for the film with Malaika Arora Khan. Kaal was moderately successful.[4].

Nasreen Munni Kabir, the noted British filmmaker, produced a two-part documentary on Shah Rukh, "The Inner and Outer World of Shah Rukh Khan" (2005). Featuring his 2004 Temptations concert tour, the film contrasted Khan's inner world of family and daily life with the outer world of his work. Recently another book "Still Reading Khan" (2006) was released on SRK which talks about his family and his life.

Kha was then chosen as the host of the third series of Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of Who wants to be a millionaire?,[21] taking over from the original host Amitabh Bachchan. The show is deemed the most popular programme in Indian television history. On Monday, January 22, 2007, "KBC" aired with Khan as the new host. Reviews of Khan's hosting style has been generally postive. His sense of friendliness and humor with the show's participants has been praised.[22] The season ended on April 19 2007.

Awards and nominations

Khan has been nominated for 15 Filmfare Best Actor awards[23] - six of which he won - the most recent being in 2005 for Swades in which he played an Indian-American who was a NASA Engineer, and he goes to a rural Indian village where he encounters some problems.

  • TIME magazine described Khan as the most recognizable actor in the world.[25] The Guardian newspaper similarly described Khan as 'the world's biggest film star', as per the logic that the Bollywood has a global audience of 3.6 billion, while Hollywood has 2.5 billion.[26]
  • Khan's wax figure was unveiled in March at Madame Tussauds in London. His wax figure has joined those of Aishwarya Rai and Amitabh Bachchan.[27]
  • Khan suffers from constant back pain.[28]
  • Khan loves computer games and hi-tech gadgets.[29]
  • In 2006 one of Khan's security guards was shot dead by another of his security guards.[30]
  • Khan is two awards short of matching Dilip Kumar's record for most Filmfare Best Actor awards. Khan has won six Filmfare Best Actor in 16 years.
