The cover for the first DVD collection containing the first twenty-six episodes of the first season

This is a list of episodes of the Pokémon anime series (ポケットモンスター, Poketto Monsutā, Pocket Monsters) covering the first season of the series about the adventures of series protagonist, Ash Ketchum and friends on the way to the Indigo League. The episodes are directed by Masamitsu Hidaka and produced by Oriental Light and Magic and TV Tokyo.[1]

The division between seasons of Pokémon is based on the openings of each episode, and may not reflect the actual production season. The English episode numbers are based on their first airing in the United States in syndication, on the WB Television Network or on Cartoon Network. (Other English-speaking nations largely followed either this order or the Japanese order.) Subsequent airings of the English version follow the original Japanese order, except in the case of episodes which are no longer shown in English.

The original title for the series was The Adventures of Pokémon (aka Pokémon: Adventures in the Kanto League). This season is often referred to by the informal name Pokémon: The Indigo League to differentiate it from later, named seasons.

The first season ran from April 1, 1997, to January 28, 1999 in Japan.[2] This season were shown on TV Tokyo.[1] In the United States, it originally aired in syndication in 1998, from September 8 to October 30, but was moved mid-way through the season to Kids' WB!'s weekday and Saturday morning line-ups on February 13, 1999 to December 4, 1999.[3][1]

Seven pieces of theme music are used for the episodes; one opening theme and five closing themes in the Japanese episodes and single an opening theme and ending theme in the English ones. The one Japanese opening theme are "Aim to Be a Pokémon Master" (めざせポケモンマスター, Mezase Pokemon Masutā) by Rica Matsumoto, used in the episodes from 1 to 85.[1] The five closing themes are "151" (ひゃくごじゅういち, Hyakugojūichi) by Unshou Ishizuka and Pokémon 4 Kids, used in the episodes from 1 to 27. "Nyarth's Song" (ニャースのうた, Nyāsu no Uta) by Inuko Inuyama, used in the episodes from 28 to 37 then 65 to 68. "Pocket Fantasy" (ポケットにファンタジー, Poketto ni Fantajī) by Sachi & Juri, used in the episodes from 38 to 53. "Pokémon March" (ポケモン音頭, Pokémon Ondo) by Sachiko Kobayashi, also used in episodes of the second season from 54 to 64 and episode 104. "Type: Wild" (タイプ:ワイルド, Taipu: Wairudo) by Rica Matsumoto, also used in episodes of the second season from 69 to 103.[1] The opening and ending theme for the English airing is "Pokémon Theme" by Jason Paige, used in the episodes from 1 to 81.[1]

The episodes this season have been released in 26 individual DVD since its first release on December 13, 1998 to January 23, 2001, when it is released volume twenty six.[4][5] From 2006, Viz Media has released episodes of the season were three DVD compilations. The first twenty-six episodes of this season were released on DVD on November 21, 2006, with "Beauty and the Beach" being skipped.[6] The second part of the first season came out on November 13, 2007,[7] with the third and final part released on February 12, 2008.[8]
