The MO of that anon vandal seems similar to Bambifan, but that IP resolves to Michigan. Bambi does the majority of his nonsense from Alabama. However, if you even so much as think you smell this guy, please let me know. His destruction and damage is nearly incaluculable. Thanks for letting me know and believe me, asking about something like this is not a bother. :) --PMDrive1061 (talk) 15:41, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Reference 1 is a bare URL.Zigzig20s (talk) 21:23, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
- No it isn't Zigzig20s- the shunt to the wayback machine keeps it from being one. MarnetteD|Talk 21:27, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
- Followup - those wayback fixes can look odd so I have added some brackets to clear things up. MarnetteD|Talk 21:30, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
- Citer (formerly Yadcard), maintained by Dalba, is a little gem: install the bookmarklet, and you are 1-click away from a shortened footnote/named reference even on dead URLs archived by the Wayback Machine (example). As with other reference generators, citations will often need a tweak or two, but citations made on web.archive.org pages will include
|archive-url=
,|archive-date=
, and|dead-url=
. Besides that, Citer handles Google Books URL, DOI, ISBN, PMID, PMCID, and OCLC. Sam Sailor 08:04, 20 June 2018 (UTC)- That is nice Sam. Thanks for making me aware of it and for using it on the item mentioned in this thread. Much appreciated. MarnetteD|Talk 14:05, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

bare url question
Hello again. In Christ Church Detroit you removed the linkrot tag because there were no bare urls to fix. In looking closer at this one, there are no completely bare urls (e.g. http://somelink). But there are several of the form [http://somelink sometext] that have very little descriptive information. If I find these, I could remove what descriptive info there is (temporarily making a worse reference) knowing that subsequently the tools will add citation templates and basic fields.) Or I could do nothing and have things like this article with poor references. Comment? MB 22:01, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
- Hi MB. When I run reFill and it doesn't change anything I leave that edit summary. It should be noted that reFill isn't perfect and if you remove the info that is with the refs now there is no guarantee that refill would improve on it. Your best bet is to add whatever info you feel is necessary rather than remove what is there now. I have seen a wide range of citation styles in my journeys and different editors handle them in completely different ways and most articles have (one or two to many) incomplete citations. The other thing you can do is add the {{Citation style}} to the article. The category it creates isn't patrolled as regularly as the reFill template creates but it will alert readers to the fact that the cites might not be complete. Best regards. The Importance of Being Uranist Edit
I wanted to ask you this here to avoid making you go back and forth to help me as a new editor. I know I need a citation for my comment on Earnest as a play on Uranist, but would be much indebted for some advice as to what that ought to look like. I believe the first time I heard the theory was from Dr. Sos Eltis' Oxford lecture series on Wilde in which she discusses Wilde and sexuality and makes the point then. Would this be sufficient as a citation? I don't know how else I could cite it. Many thanks! Becsh (talk) 22:28, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
- Becsh you need to find a WP:RS that is verifiable. Unfortunately, your memory of a lecture (per WP:I-SAW-IT) does not meet Wikipedia's guidelines. You might ask for help at the Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard but I can't guarantee that you will get an answer. MarnetteD|Talk 00:23, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

Erroneous message left for you
Obviously that template warning was not meant for you. Thanks for reverting the vandalism to my talk page. Instead of going directly there, I reverted through Huggle and your edit got in between. I was going to strike it but you beat me to that as well. I am sure you knew. Hope you are doing well. Donner60 (talk) 22:14, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Donner60. After looking at things I figured it was a "huggle is a powerful tool for good and/or ill" situation :-) I'm hanging in there. I'm sorry you are having to deal with that IP. Best regards and enjoy your Sunday. MarnetteD|Talk 22:17, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
- I am sure that the user is convinced that his non-neutral anti-Trump and basically irrelevant personal opinions (considering what the article is about) are ok since he thinks the NY Times backs it up; perhaps in an opinion piece. It is clear that he is not to be convinced because I left the fact that this is not a blog or forum and does not publish personal opinions. Also, the trend in the project appears to be to eliminate this kind of thing, gratuitously trying to make people one does not agree with look bad, should not be tolerated. Where does it stop? Does the snarky parenthetical really have anything to do with Melania Trump's anti-cyberbullying campaign? I don't think I am wrong and have misinterpreted neutral point of view in this case. More than enough said, I guess. Donner60 (talk) 22:24, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
- I was finally going to write one reply about neutrality and that opinion pieces in newspapers are not really neutral and don't support those kind of edits. I have saved it offline since the user has now been blocked. Thanks again. Donner60 (talk) 23:01, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

Archive box and ToC
If you remove that {{clear}} syntax, that big archive box would line up nicely with the ToC. SlightSmile 14:50, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
- As I think of it. What if the ToC becomes too small and then the archive box extends past the ToC and makes a mess. Put __TOC__ on the line after the "<div style = …" followed by the {{clear}}. That should work. I'll send you my bill. SlightSmile 15:07, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for your message Slightsmile. I've got three different "<div style = …" commands so I am not sure which one is part of your fix. - Softlavender and Michael.
My first mentor here on Wikipedia was our mutual friend RepublicanJacobiteTheFortyFive [nowadays, TheOldJacobite] just seven years ago.
My first UK mentor was no other than Martinevans123 a little later in November 2011, along with PaleCloudedWhite.
Michael, our correspondence began during the following April when I approached you for help.
Softlavender, I am unable to date when you and I first met up.
Is it any wonder that I became the editor that I am? ‑ ‑ Gareth Griffith‑Jones The Welsh Buzzard ‑ ‑ 15:32, 13 August 2018 (UTC)- Oh dear. I feel compelled to apologise for what I may have helped to create. lol. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:37, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
- Gareth, we first met in September 2013 in the fustercluck of arguments at The Departed, which I somehow got involved in (even though I've never even seen the film) and tried to redeem. (That's also when I met TOJ.) Somewhere along the line you gave me a barnstar for that and other considerations, which put you in my good graces. :) I had the misfortune to visit Martin's usertalk in early 2015 (actually I had conversed with him before that) on EEng's recommendation. I met Michael via his annoying habit of editing articles on films and actors; I usually confused him with MelanieN, but eventually I was able to tell them apart. Softlavender (talk) 18:43, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
- Gareth, you are, typically, too kind in referring to me as a mentor. My recollection, which could be flawed, is that I was impatient, perhaps even rude, with you at first. But, finally realized you were (and are) always well-intentioned. Please correct me if I'm wrong as to the nature of our first encounter. Regardless, glad to know you and the others who have contributed to this conversation. Best, always. ---The Old JacobiteThe '45 00:59, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

Good to see your original signature, RepublicanJacobiteTheFortyFive Yes, I agree with your recollection of our first chance meeting; it was a confrontation. Nevertheless, I admired your dedication and adopted your style. As I wrote above, Is it any wonder that I became the editor that I am?

Shipwreck lists
Hi, 20em gives a nice two-column layout on my laptop screen. Using Firefox and set to 170% magnification. It's a pity that they did away with being able to set 2 cols for references. It looks much neater than a single column when there are more than about a dozen refs. Mjroots (talk) 16:17, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- Who is “they” in this case, and why should we listen to the ...persons? Qwirkle (talk) 16:24, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- Hello Mjroots. They are in three smooshed columns on my screen. When I remove the 20 they are in two nice neat columns not one single one. That is the dilemma. I do apologize for any offense my edit summaries may have caused. One request - if this happens in the future please just restore your version without using the undo - that red ping first thing in the morning - or any other time of the day to be honest :-) never gets things off to a good start. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 17:19, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- Qwirkle the change to columns commands took place more than a year ago (if my dusty memory bans aren't too out of whack) and I was not part of the discussion. I think you could ask at the WP:VPT or the WP:HELPDESK to get clarification. Sorry I could not be of more help. MarnetteD|Talk 17:19, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- No offence taken. There are hundreds of shipwreck lists which really need a consistent approach across them all. Know what you mean about the pings first thing. Mjroots (talk) 17:23, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- Oh, great. First it’s interaction bans...then topic bans...then site bans, and now the bastards are going after memory? Qwirkle (talk) 17:32, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Mjroots: There is plenty on the matter of columns at Template talk:Reflist and its archives. I think that there was a discussion - possibly a full RfC - at one of the Village Pumps as well. Basically: setting a fixed number of columns is a bad idea because you have no idea how wide anybody else's screen is (nor what zoom level they habitually set). Two columns may be good for your own personal setup, but consider that users of handheld mobile devices may not have sufficient width for two columns; and people with widescreen monitors may find that there is still plenty of blank space between the columns. By contrast, setting a column width allows the browser to adjust the number of columns to suit the space available. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:34, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

YouTube is awash with uploads of this, I'm glad to say. Including that incredible live one from the legendary Concertgebouw Concert, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1968. An utterly incredible performance, even with that slight "tape warp" brass chord towards the end. What a truly incredible number this was. That little aching, sobbing, taunting guitar riff.... the magisterial King Curtis on sax, just all genius arrangement. Still is. But that original demo, recorded in Detroit by Ted White, with unknown bass and drums, (with the introductory cough) just nudges it for me. I heard it for the first time on Paul Jones' blues show. I was utterly spellbound. RIP Aretha. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:30, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks M. I've been strolling through so many of her performances on YouTube but haven't seen that one yet - I'll go hunt for it next. One of my favorites of hers is the B side of that disk. Do you have a favorite of it? Truly a special singer and woman - RIP Aretha and thanks for giving us the gift of your voice. MarnetteD|Talk 19:09, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- A wonderful song. A wonderful performance. Often overlooked. Was always sorry there wasn't more brass on it. And the organ has always sounded weak to me, sorry (perhaps Hammond Threesie can tell us what it was). But the vocals are sublime. Here's a nice gentle, but classy, cover by Phoebe Snow, which has the brass I was always longing for. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:20, 16 August 2018 (UTC) .. it's on her 1978 Against the Grain album which has Michael Brecker.
- Very nice. Thank you. MarnetteD|Talk 19:29, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- If you have time and inclination there's a great live one by our Glad (with Martina McBride, and Estelle) here and there's the absolutely wonderful Etta James (alternate take) version from this 2001 complilation album. When you consider the immense size of Aretha's legacy, you realise just what a hugely influential singer she was. A true superstar, with a huge talent. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:44, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- I don't think Concertgubow '68 has got any organ on it, just piano (played by Aretha herself brilliantly on a few songs) ... oh you mean "Do Right....", er, well listening to it I think it's a B-3 with V-2 vibrato going straight into a tone cabinet (ie: no Leslie), which isn't a combination seen too often in rock, but might have been common in black churches during the '40s and '50s, which is probably where it stems from. In touring bands, I've played "I Never Loved A Man", "Respect", "Natural Woman", "Think" (pronounced "Tink" when touring Ireland) and "The House That Jack Built" - I especially liked the last of those because a) we didn't play it very much, b) it's got the best groove, c) the backing is pretty free reign and d) it's the easiest to just jam indefinitely on it ... but also e) a bloke can sing backing vocals on it. What's not to like? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:16, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks to you both for these posts. I am learning more from this thread than any of the articles that I've happened on today :-) Speaking of backing vocals I'm singing along with the video that M linked to as the mailman made their daily drop off. Now he probably thinks I'm even crazier then he did before. Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk 20:22, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- Yes. I did mean the original "Do Right...." B-side. Thanks for the Baptist suggestion. You may be quite right about the need for no Leslie (although it's always sounded a bit "Farfisa-like" to my untrained Congregationalist ears). Martinevans123 (talk) 20:27, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- Spooner Oldham played a Farfisa on "When A Man Loves A Woman", so you might be right, but it depends what was set up in the studio, I guess. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 21:26, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

- You've got me mulling all of this over now. "Dr. Feelgood" is definitely a B-3 with Leslie, "I Never Loved A Man" is a B-3 straight (with Spooner on a Wurly), "Respect" I think is the same, but it could equally be a Farfisa. Gaaah, where are the studio logs? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:50, 17 August 2018 (UTC)
- You just can't beat a Spooner on a Wurly, can you. Martinevans123 (talk) 13:02, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

- Spooner Oldham played a Farfisa on "When A Man Loves A Woman", so you might be right, but it depends what was set up in the studio, I guess. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 21:26, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- Very nice. Thank you. MarnetteD|Talk 19:29, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
Martinevans123 (talk) 19:20, 16 August 2018 (UTC) .. it's on her 1978 Against the Grain album which has Michael Brecker.
deletion nom for Murders of Margaret and Seana Tapp
Just notifying you (not canvassing just notifying) about Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Murders of Margaret and Seana Tapp. Paul Benjamin Austin (talk) 23:58, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
- Hello PBA I hope you are well. FYI when I click on the link to the Sun at the AFD it only goes to a generic home page. I hope you can fix that so I can read the full article. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 00:02, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
MarnetteD It's behind a paywall. I'll copy the text to somewhere? Paul Benjamin Austin (talk) 00:05, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
- Rats PBA I don't think you can do that due to COPYVIO problems. Maybe somebody else has a solution. MarnetteD|Talk 00:07, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

- Hi again Paul. I know you aren't canvassing but others will not understand so I fear I can't comment at the RFD. I have a couple suggestions but I don't know how helpful they will be. First, if you can find more sources for the article that will be a good thing. Next, make a copy of it for your own files at home. Next, is it possible that you could post it at a different wiki? I know some have different inclusion criteria. I mention these options because I know how important speaking for those that don't have a voice is to you. I'm afraid these suggestions will be unsatisfactory so I will simply wish you well on WikiP and even more so off. MarnetteD|Talk 01:56, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
- Yeah, As I've said, victims like Margaret and Seana deserve more than faded memories and chapters in true crime books. Paul Benjamin Austin (talk) 02:02, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

RIP Neil
Neil Simon has passed away. In 1968 my Mom took me to San Antonio to go to Hemisfair. The first night there we went to see the film The Odd Couple (film). It was also my first time experiencing humidity :-P Almost 30 years later I was able to return the favor by taking her to see The Odd Couple (play)#Female version. Dear Mr Simon thanks for those specific memories and for your wonderful body of work. MarnetteD|Talk 18:39, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- Very sad... luckily we have the film versions to always remember him by. During the 1970s, I was an avid Broadway and off-Broadway theater-goer (back when you could still get tix for under $15 at TKTS). During that decade I had the fortune to see well over 200 shows. Among them were The Prisoner of Second Avenue, The Sunshine Boys, God's Favorite (which was one of my least favorites), California Suite, Chapter Two, and They're Playing Our Song. The Odd Couple I have only seen the film version of, and that is still one of my favorites, along with Come Blow Your Horn and the Out of Towners. Truly a gifted writer. - Thanks for sharing your memories Onel5969. Now I have to put the green-eyed envy gnome back in its box - I mean 200+ plays and inexpensive tickets! Thanks again. MarnetteD|Talk 19:50, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- It was a great time... my favorite actor of that time was John Cullum, who I saw in several productions, including Shenandoah, 1776, On the 20th Century, and Deathtrap (which I saw again with another actor in the lead, although I can't remember who). Another highlight was seeing Eqqus 4 times, all in the student seating on-stage -- one with each of the four major actors in the lead (Perkins, Hopkins, Burton and Nimoy). In my opinion, Nimoy gave the best performance, while Burton gave the least-inspiring... Another treat was seeing House of Blue Leaves back in 71... and then getting to do it in L.A. in the early 80's... which Guare actually came to see. Got to see Mahoney do it in the 80s on Broadway as well.Onel5969 TT me 20:01, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

- The Odd Couple, and in particular the film, is a Hall of Fame comedy which never loses its charm and brilliance. I think Simon's best work was about "couples" who were odd, because my other two favorites of his are The Goodbye Girl and Barefoot in the Park. His voice changed with each and was pitch-perfect for each time, place, and generation. Softlavender (talk) 23:46, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- Well said Softlavender. Thanks for the post. I am so glad you mentioned Cullum Onel5969. Every time I watch 1776 I think about how long a career he had already had before he created Holling Vincoeur on Northern Exposure. Cheers to you both. MarnetteD|Talk 00:17, 28 August 2018 (UTC)
- No worries, MarnetteD… and Softlavender... The Goodbye Girl, what a performance by both Mason and Dreyfuss… when he leaves his guitar and David Gates' strains come up on the soundtrack... gets the tears flowing everytime… Someday I'll tell you about my Richard Dreyfuss moment.Onel5969 TT me 00:42, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

- Dreyfuss is one of my very favorite actors. I can't name a performance of his I didn't like, Duddy Kravitz notwithstanding. He and Mason are perfect in that film; I can't imagine any other actors doing it that much justice. BTW, if you are on Twitter, Dreyfuss is very funny there, although he hasn't been too active there of late. Softlavender (talk) 00:52, 28 August 2018 (UTC)
- Indeed, one of the great ones...this comes only one day after the loss of John McCain who, political views and opinions aside, was also a giant. RIP (and BTW, I thought he had died already!). Antonio Taco con Chili Martin, (What's your deal?) 00:05, 28 August, 2018 (UTC)
