OTT platforms distributes streaming media through and over Internet. Currently OTT services in India is running with having about 40 OTT players. In fiscal 2018, the OTT market standed at ₹2,150 crore. Presently the OTT market stands at ₹3,500 crore.[1] According to a KPMG report, the average time spent by subscribers on various OTT platforms are 30- 50 minutes.

History and growth

The first dependent Indian OTT platform was BIGFlix, launched by Reliance Entertainment in 2008.[2] Though before this some independent OTT platforms and international OTT platforms already ventured in India.

OTT rise in India

Rise of Hotstar

Hotstar is the top subscribed OTT platforn of India, owned by Star India. In 2018, Hotstar gained the top spot among the OTT players having around 150 million active users with over 350 million number of downloads.[3] In July 2018 Hotstar has nearly 120 minutes as watch time. According to Hotstar’s India Watch Report 2018, 96 per cent of watch time on Hotstar comes from videos which are longer than 20 minutes while one-third of Hotstar subscribers watch television shows on Hotstar.[4] Hotstar stated to invest Rs 120 crore in generating original content such as "Hotstar specials". 80% of the viewership on Hotstar comes from drama, movies and sports.[3]

Netflix in India

American Netflix entered India in January 2016. In April 2017, it was registered as a limited liability partnership (LLP) and it started commissioning content. It earned a net profit of Rs 20.2 lakh for fiscal year 2017. In fiscal year 2018, Netflix earned revenues of Rs 58 crore.[5] Morgan Stanley Research mentioned that in July, Netflix had the highest watch time of more than 120 minutes but their viewer count was around 20 million.[4] Netflix have 6 million subscribers and 5-6% of them are paid members.[6] In July 2018, Netflix increased its subscription price by 13-18% in US and Latin America. This is the biggest increase by the company since its inception 12 years ago but India was not affected by this as it would to be to expensive to buy. Netflix has stated to invest ₹600 Crore producing Indian originals.[7] In late 2018, Netflix bought 1.5 lakh sq ft office space in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai to make head office.Netflix currently has more than 40 employees in India.[5] Netflix is having tough competition with other OTT platforms in India such as Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and Eros Now. The main problem is too much package expances. Netflix takes ₹500 for a month that is about eight times of Amazon Prime Subscription.[6]

Other OTT players

Sony LIV, the OTT platform form Sony India, have 30 million viewers having a watch time around 60 minutes.[4]

Amazon Prime Video was launched in 2016. Yhe platform has 2,300 titles available including 2,000 movies and about 400 shows. It has announced that it will invest Rs 2,000 crores in creating original content in India. It is looking to launch 30 original shows in multiple languages in the coming days. Besides English, Prime Video is now available in six Indian languages.[1] Amazon India launched Amazon Prime Music in February 2018.[8]

Eros Now, an OTT platform launched by Eros International plc have the highest content among the OTT players in India, including over 11,000 Films, 100,000 music albums & tracks and 100 TV shows with web series and others. Eros Now is tittled as 'Best OTT Platform of the Year 2019' at the British Asian Media Awards. It has 128 million registered users and 13 million paying subscribers.[9]

Apart from this, Balaji Telefilms owned ALTBalaji, Viacom 18 owned Voot are most viewed OTT platforms in India. Reliance Jio owned JioCinema & JioTV and Times Group owned MXplayer are new OTT service providers in India.

Rise of regional content OTT players

Hoichoi is the first dedicated regional language OTT service in India. It has launched 30 new shows, 12 original films in Bengali and has acquired about 200 Bengali films and dubbed content from English, Hindi and Arabic. Additionally, it is entering Bangladesh as well as the United Arab Emirates, instantly adding a prospective customer base of 18 crore.[1] Other regional OTT platforms include Sun NXT etc.

Future predictions

According to KPMG Media and Entertainment Report 2018, it is expected to grow 45 percent to reach ₹13,800 crore by the end of fiscal 2023.[4] According to a report by Ernst & Young, the OTT users in the country will reach 500 million by 2020, making India the second biggest market after the US.[1]
