Vinay Namboodiri is a professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.[1] He is interested in research in Computer Vision and Machine Learning. He is specifically working in the areas of research such as Visual Recognition with Scarce Supervision, Language and Vision, Human Motion Analysis, Analysis of Sketches. Previously, he has worked at Bell Labs Antwerp, been a Postdoctoral Fellow in KU Leuven with Prof. Luc Van Gool and had obtained a Ph.D. while being guided by Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri. He is currently involved in organizing the Mysore Park Workshop on Vision, Language and AI, (VLAI 2016) This is being co-oranized with Pushmeet Kohli, CV Jawahar and Venkatesh Babu. He has published several research papers in top conferences of Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing such as CPVR and EMNLP. He has also serving as an Area Chair for the ICVGIP 2016 as well as the WACV 2016 conferences.

Early life

Vinay Namboodiri obtained a B.Tech. from IIT Kanpur (1986 batch) and a Ph.D. from the same institute.

Career

He currently teaches Computer Visions and Computer Graphics at IIT Kanpur. Unfortunately, he will not be offering any courses in the spring semester 2020, since he will be on a sabbatical to University of Oxford, United Kingdom.

Awards and honors

  • Best paper award at BMVC 2011 for work on "Object Classification with Latent Variables", which was joint work with Hakan Bilen and Luc Van Gool
  • Award by MSR, India at Techfest 2007 for image restoration work done during Ph.D.
