Is Wiktionary allowed as a source?

The recent article LUMI says that "lumi" means "snow" in Finnish, citing Wiktionary as a source. As a native speaker of Finnish, I can say that the claim is definitely true. But can Wiktionary be used as a source? JIP | Talk 01:27, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

Sylvia Rose Ashby

I royally messed up the referencing of Sylvia Rose Ashby, mainly because I wasn't aware of {{sfn}}. Is there anyone who can help me fix it? When I try to correct it, I seem to end up making things worse. Any help would be absolutely gratefully received. It certainly is unique... It appears that none of your edits to that article have introduced {{sfn}} so your question is perplexing. Further, it seems that you are changing the established citation style in contravention of WP:CITEVAR. The article's citation style was introduced by Editor Chris.sherlock at this edit. Before changing the article's citation style you should perhaps consult with that editor in keeping with WP:CITEVAR.

I am not going to looking at every editor's user page to see if they are using one of several user names and you should not expect me or other editors to do that.

Yeah, I missed that edit; not sure how but I did. That {{sfn}} does not work because cs1|2 templates create the anchor ID from the content of |last= or its alias |author=. Because the matching cs1|2 citation uses |author=Crawford, Robert, {{sfn|Crawford|2018}} does not match. The fix is to change |author=Crawford, Robert to |last=Crawford and |first=Robert.

If I hadn’t been bullied, then I would not have felt the need to change my username. Thank you for at least responding. And if you don’t want to check the user page, it’s unclear what I can do about it, other than inform you of who I am. I do expect that if I tell you to check my user page after you make an incorrect assumption, that you do so. I also, interestingly, expect you to actually look at the history if you decide to sardonically say I haven’t done something. When and why did standards for stubs change?

In the beginning of Wikipedia it used to be fine to have a stub that contains two sentences. These days it seems that such stubs get automatically deleted. When did this policy change. Did it change via an RFC? If so, can anyone link me to the relevant RFC? ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 11:49, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

@331dot: One recent example I discussed with other people outside of Wikipedia is WELLBY. It's an academic topic, the article had cited one very reputable source with the world happiness report. There are other academic papers about the concept (but not cited in the stub). In 2006 when Wikipedia was still growing in editorship such a stub would likely not have been deleted.

ChristianKl I would say that Wikipedia is a living breathing entity and the only thing that’s changed is somebody chose to move this particular article back to draft space. The information still exists here World Happiness Report#WELLBY, so Draft:WELLBY may or may not be necessary. @Timtempleton: The thing that changed also is that Wikipedia stopped being welcoming of new editors and stopped growing in editorship. Two-line stubs can still survive provided they cite sources. Lack of any sourcing is a perfectly valid reason to either delete or move an article to draft space. Beeblebrox (talk) 16:23, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

I should note that two line stubs used to be called “substubs”. Anyway, a good example of a stub like this is John Mathieson Anderson, which I recently expanded (slightly). So they do exist. - Aussie Article Writer (talk) 16:47, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

Back in the day, you used to be able to create a stub with virtually no content beyond the title, and no references. @Beeblebrox: If I recall correctly, the lack of sources in the stub was never a valid reason for deletion. The person proposing a deletion was supposed to do at least a cursory search for sources as part of the process, and a lack of any off-wiki sources is a perfectly valid reason for deletion. -Arch dude (talk) 18:17, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

@Alansplodge: there is a reference here[[1]] from Suffolk.gov.uk referring to "Augustine Priory (site of), Friars Street (Dominican Friary)". At risk of guessing beyond the sources, this suggests that the Augustinian Priory might be the same thing as Sudbury Priory, which already has a perfectly respectable article. If no one can find good grounds that they're different and need two separate articles, the one you'd like to see the back of could easily be deleted. Elemimele (talk) 19:24, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

Image formatting

I tried to add an image to Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha#Early life in the United Kingdom, but the infobox has pushed it down the page into the next section. Is there a way of beating this? Alansplodge (talk) 15:40, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

Adding quotation marks to a long list of song titles

There's a webpage with long list of song titles that aren't in quotation marks. Could anyone please tell me if there's any way to apply quotation marks to each in a fast manner?--Thylacine24 (talk) 17:02, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

@Thylacine24: You don't mention which page you're referring to, so the following suggestion might not apply. Sometimes I will copy the text into another text editor and use find-and-replace rules. For example, for a list of songs where each song has a bullet, replace * with * " will add the quotation marks in the front. For a list of songs where each song has a wikilink, replace [[ with "[[ and ]] with ]]". Then paste the text back into Wikipedia and save. Hope this helps! I would also guess that link is referenced in other Wikipedia articles, as well.

How to edit/fix citations

Raven9nine the source code for an inline citation will be in the body of the text, not the citations section. Each reference has a superscript number which appears in the body of the text and in the citation list at the end. If you still can't find the citation, you can mention the article name here. You tried to create an article (now pushed back to Draft:Hundsberg (Gschwend)). While inhabited places are usually notable, your version currently has zero sources. Every fact stated in a Wikipedia article needs to be capable of being verified by readers, who expect to see reliable preferably secondary sources for all the information they contain. How to request reassessment?

The article MS Viking Grace is still shown as stub-class at the WikiProject Ships, despite being over 32 kilobytes long with 11 sections and over 40 references. This is because it had only ever been assessed once, in January 2012, when it was 2 kilobytes long and pretty much consisted of one sentence. How does one go about requesting a reassessment? JIP You can obviously ask here. I have reassessed it as C based on the WP Finland assessment. The automatic tool suggests B with 37 percent certainty, which suggests it is borderline B/C. TSventon (talk) 16:15, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

@TSventon: Apparently leaving them blank is not enough. I made a preview with {{WikiProject Ships|class=C|B1=no|B2=no|B3=yes|B4=yes|B5=yes}} and it showed the template with the class C instead of Start. @JIP: I think it's perfectly fine to assess your own articles-- I do it all the time using the automatic ORES tool in the rater script. If someone disagrees with your assessment, they will surely let you know. The ratings are also only used internally, so they have no impact on POV. --- Possibly ☎ 19:55, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

@TSventon: It's not "my" article, I don't own it. I don't work for Viking Line, my only connection to the ship is that I have travelled on it a couple of times. It's just that I've edited the article quite a bit. Anyway, I edited the assessment box to show that references and adequate coverage are not met, but structure, proper grammar and infobox and images are. This is the minimum for inclusion to class C. Why is this User Box not working?

Here is my page of User Boxes: User:Joseph A. Spadaro/Sandbox/Page-Intro-10. In the third column on the right, there is a "blank space" (four User Boxes down). This used to be occupied by another User Box. Then, one day, out of the blue ... that User Box just disappeared from my page. I went back to look at "old versions" of my page (looking through the History). And, it seems, that blank space has always been a blank space (even though I absolutely know that that's not the case). I looked at the computer code in the "edit mode" of my page. And -- in relation to the blank white space / missing User Box -- it says "{{User:JohnRussell/wikipedianumedits|89,900}}". When it appeared -- that is, before it disappeared -- the User Box said something like "This user has made 89,900 edits to Wikipedia" (or some such sentiment). What's going on? I am totally confused. My guess is that the "computer code" for that User Box has become invalid or disabled. But, I have no idea what's going on. Please help. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 03:32, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

I can't explain what changed for you, but I believe the correct syntax for that user box is

{{User wikipedianumedits|89,900}}. That is, the ":JohnRussell/" part should be removed and replaced with a single space. CodeTalker (talk) 04:51, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

Page Not Showing Up in Search

So, our page was the Tennessee Foreign Language Institute, which does show up in the search. But we changed our name in 2018, and the Tennessee Language Center (the new name) does NOT show up when you search Wikipedia for it. How do I fix this? @Star Mississippi: It's a fertility clinic in Kiev, and is likely not notable, based on the English coverage I can see. I also searched the .RU Wikipedia and couldn't find it. It would be spelled like this: Айвимед. TimTempleton ^{(talk) (cont)} 19:15, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

List help

I'm not up on the policies or guidelines for lists... could someone take a quick pass at List_of_washi to remove those that do not belong? My initial inclination was to remove everything that is not a wikilink -- is that correct? --- Possibly ☎ 19:48, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

@Possibly: each list has its own selection criteria—here, it seems reasonable to me to list common members of the category even if they don't currently have an article. If there were so many items that listing them all would obviously be undesirable ("List of pieces of paper") then the selection criteria might be that it has to be notable. This list has some inline external links that can be taken as (badly-formatted) references. I think the priority should be adding additional references and details about each washi, before it comes to the matter of removing the content (and then I'd keep anything that has good sources and delete the rest). — Bilorv (talk) 17:27, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

@Animevocaloidandutaurules538: https://anime-and-vocaloid-fan-club.fandom.com/wiki/Template:Akoane_Nishimura uses a version of mw:Extension:PortableInfobox. Special:Version shows we don't have that extension installed so the code doesn't work here. We use {{Infobox}} to make infobox templates. We are not an anime wiki and Template:Akoane Nishimura could easily be nominated for deletion, also if it actually worked. Template:Infobox Wikipedia user is more suited for a user page here. @Dr Salvus: would the script be Rater? I think it adds the banner shell automatically when it reaches some threshold of WikiProjects (three?) and for fewer, the shell isn't needed. If it's some other script, you'd be better asking on a talk page related to the script or the volunteer who maintains it—these things are usually in the domain of just one person writing the code and if it's not an option, it's not an option. Princess Ida

The second paragraph in the Genesis section of the article on Gilbert & Sullivan's opera Princess Ida contains errors. Some of the incorrect information is actually available correctly in other Wikipedia articles.

1. Queen's College was not the first 'higher education' institution for women in the UK. It provided teaching, but not at that level.

2. Westfield College was not the first women's college in the University of London.

In both cases the correct college is Bedford College, founded 1849, and now part of Royal Holloway and Bedford New College.

Articles on Queen's, Westfield and Bedford are all correct on this, it's just the Princess Ida article.

I have no wish to become a Wikipedia editor - it's far too complicated a process and seems full of rage and culture wars. What's needed is a place for people like me to be able to report errors without being sucked into that climate. Even finding this place was complicated, and I'm still not sure if it's the right place for corrections or if anyone will actually bother to do anything about it. 31.111.116.248 (talk) 08:55, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

I have corrected the references to Westfield College. The question of first 'higher education' institution for women in the UK is debatable. I have created the wikipedia page about our family which is a reputable and note worthy family from central india and is closely associated with SaiBaba adn Gajanan maharaj who are key saints in the Hindu beliefs. However i have failed to secure this page on wiki pedia as your need references for the credibility of the article. While i understand that references are needed for this kind of a publication there is very little documented fsactd to support besides which i have enclosed with the article. How can you help me with this page

@The Butys: Where did you get your information? If it is from private records or from family oral history, then your work constitutes "original research": see WP:OR. As an encyclopedia, we do not publish original research, so you will need to find another venue for it. I have always thought that WMF should have separate project for this, similar to wikibooks, but we do not. However, if your sources are published written records, even non-english and even if not accessible online, then you can list your sources and write an encyclopedia article here.-Arch dude (talk) 14:45, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

How do I add a space on a map point without adding a second point?

I've tried adding a space to the Roundway Down map point at the Battle of Roundway Down, but doing so seems to create two separate map points for "Roundway" and "Down" instead of one point for "Roundway Down". How do I circumvent this? Thanks, Tyrone Madera (talk) 13:34, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

Adding content to the Off to See the Wizard page

Hi. There is a page for the ABC series Off to See the Wizard (1967-1968) but information for two episodes are missing pages. I have information on the production company that was responsible for the "Wild World" episode, so I would like to create that page. I have all of the documentation for that episode (including shoot lists, invoices, correspondence on ABC stationery, and copies of news mentions from a variety of papers). Would I be allowed to create the page and would my sources be credible? Would I upload scans of the sources, or would I need to publish them somewhere else first and then link to that site?

Also, since the production company also was involved with other projects, would I be able to create pages for those? The production company was run by a single woman producer, possibly a pioneer in the early years of television. This information may be useful to anyone researching the role of women in the development of broadcast media.

Maritimum, the material you have is indeed of interest to researchers. However, Wikipedia is not a repository for original research. Wikipedia relies on reliable, published sources to ensure verifiability, given that it is a crowd-sourced project. You can read Wikipedia:Original research and Wikipedia:Verifiability for more explanation of the concepts Quisqualis is referring to. @Daundelin: This appear to be a content dispute. From checking the history, the table on the diff you've showed is almost identical to the one from your last edit ([3]), with a couple contestants changing places and different notation (but same results). If a consensus was reached on how the table should look like, then revert to the previous stable version and warn the user. Otherwise, invite them to discuss about it on the article's talk page. (ec) DaxServer, there's always the question of context/for what, but on the face of it, Bloomsbury Publishing is a well known publisher, and a Tejaswini Pagdala writes in The Hindu. Subject is an X

The article Fernando Iglesias (Argentine politician) has a lead sentence that says "Fernando Adolfo Iglesias (born May 14, 1957 in Buenos Aires) is an Argentine journalist, writer, politician, and volleyball player". He was indeed a volleyball player once, but only in schools: he never took part in professional leagues, and wouldn't be notable for wikipedia if his biography had stopped at that point. Should we describe him as a volleyball player in the introductory sentence, or skip that? Cambalachero (talk) 17:28, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
