How does the G7 differ from the G8?

The articles for Group of Seven and Group of Eight were proposed for merger and the merger was rejected because the consensus was that they were two different entities. However neither article makes clear what the difference is, nor how the two groups are related. An expert is needed to modify both articles and explain. --Agrestis (talk) 09:17, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Check before the official site of Italy about Taormina G7 in the article.G7 has always existed as FINANCIAL forum (it can be considered the most important). It is composed by the 7 major advanced economies as IMF reports and the 7 with the highest net national wealth.Russia never attended this forum because of its small financial relevance in the world.Since 2014 the POLITICAL G8 forum that included Russia since late '90's has become G7 as the financial one (from 8 to 7 after Russia has been suspended).Today there are G7 meetings also of other kind of ministers. Somebody tried to merge the article G7 with G8 making confusion like every year especially since 2014 in this period as chronology shows.Anioni (talk) 08:05, 12 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This made me think there were two separate groups: the financial G7, which has meetings, and the political G7, which has separate meetings. But both the G7 and G8 started out as a group known as the G6, which first met in 1975. It appears the same G6 was the precursor to both the G7 and the G8. 23.121.191.18 (talk) 18:01, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed - the list of meetings here includes both those of the G7 and the G8 as one series. This is not at all clear. -- Beardo (talk) 22:51, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I agree this was confusing, but I've cleaned up the leads on both articles. There's less risk of these two (perhaps 3 or 4) aricles becoming WP:POVFORKs as long as the relationships are clear in the leads. I would have been strongly in favor of the merge be I guess we can try to make due.... -- Kendrick7talk 04:38, 25 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Overseas territories

Is there a reason why the map doesn't color some of the overseas territories of the member states (US: Puerto Rico, UK: Falklands, France: French New Caledonia, anything else?)? Morgengave (talk) 09:32, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Challenging an entry.

There is an entry in the historical description of the G7 that is flat out wrong: "British Queen Elizabeth II was forced to broker a deal to form a minority government after a hung election, creating a situation so unstable that another election the same year had to take place." The British Monarch is apolitical and doesn't have the political authority to "broker" anything; much less the formation of a government. This phrase should be deleted at the very least. It was Harold Wilson who formed a minority government in October of that year. CPN 12:00, 10 June 2021 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by CPNowell (talkcontribs)

Requested move 3 August 2022

Group of SevenG7 – G7 is the WP:COMMONNAME of the subject. Per MOS:ACROTITLE, "Acronyms should be used in a page name if the subject is known primarily by its abbreviation and that abbreviation is primarily associated with the subject". This is the case here. PhotographyEdits (talk) 10:47, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
