    How to stay logged in?

I log in using LastPass. I've always stayed logged in for a very long time, but recently I've been logged out every few hours. Is there anyone there who knows what went wrong and how to fix it? 98.2.238.89 (talk) 00:53, 16 June 2023 (UTC) David Spector[reply]

I would check the following items:
    • Make sure cookies are allowed for Wikipedia in your browser settings
    • Try clearing cookies for Wikipedia
    • Check that your device's date and time is set correctly; if not, cookies may not work as intended, due to expiring sooner than it should for example.

En.wiki page: "Meneguzzi in 2004"; it.wiki page: "Paolo Meneguzzi nel 2007". Why? It's the same image. JackkBrown (talk) 01:41, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, JackkBrown. The Wikimedia Commons file information page is the source of the discrepancy. Clearly, the uploader made an error. The editor who added this image to Commons has only edited English Wikipedia three times in the last five years and is even less active on Commons. I recommend removing the year from the caption. If in doubt, leave it out. Cullen328 (talk) 01:56, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And the source page given [1] has the contradictory "Musica Tour 2007/Taken on January 1, 2004" too Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:55, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Looking again at that page where it says "Show EXIF" it seems 2004 is the correct year. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:18, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a template for Wikipedia being used in scams?

If you look at the history of the page Beate Heister you will see repeated (and reverted) attempts to add information that this page is being actively used as a part of confidence scams ("2,8 million euro donation" etc). This scam usage is also discussed in the talk section of the page.

Since this is more of a Wikipedia meta-issue than anything to do with the content of the page itself, a template to mark this and warn naïve readers about the problematic situation would seem appropriate. Does such a template exist, if not, should one be created?

    OttoMäkelä (talk) 08:30, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@ottomäkelä: wikipedia will not have any disclaimers. lettherebedarklight晚安 08:36, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The existence of such a template has a strong potential for abuse and I think it would cause more problems that it would solve. 331dot (talk) 08:41, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As noted above, not a disclaimer of the content but more of meta-information on Wikipedia itself. Even with the potential for abuse, the fact remains that currently abuse is being committed using Wikipedia as a tool. OttoMäkelä (talk) 08:44, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
has it been noted by reliable publications? if not, it does not warrant a mention. lettherebedarklight晚安 08:57, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, if reliable sources write about any scams involving the article, it could be written about as encyclopedic content(not as a warning). 331dot (talk) 08:59, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Serbo-Croatian in wikipedia

    Hi there,

I noticed there is a whole editorial group on Wikipedia which writes and supports Serbo-Croatian, a language which doesn't exist. Moreover they are writing in Serbian, latin and cyrillic - Croatian doesn't have cyrillic at all. If they are similar dialects spoken in Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, B&H etc, which is also debatable, why call it Serbo-Croatian?! That discriminates quite a bit against Croatian, but completely against the peoples of B&H and Montenegro. I wouldn't mind if there is communal support for calling it "Madiera" if people so desired, but it is dicriminatory dsignated as such and was a political construct in Yugoslavia which has ceased to exist 32 years ago (from a Croatian perspective). How do I begin a process to dissolve them as a group or get them to rename? Do I need to engage with them first? Thanks. 185.207.71.146 (talk) 10:53, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

IP editor: One of the behavioural guidelines of Wikipedia is to assume good faith. Hence it would certainly be best to engage with the group politely on a relevant Talk Page. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:00, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    ...i'm sorry, what? lettherebedarklight晚安 11:01, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, according to Serbo-Croatian it does exist, though, after reading the first paragraph, apparently it's complicated. The reason on WP to call something Serbo-Croatian is because WP:RS do, and WP:s articles are supposed to summarize WP:RS.
    Talk:Serbo-Croatian Has this message:
"In English, the language spoken by Croats, Serbs, Bosniaks, and Montenegrins is generally called "Serbo-Croat(ian)". Use of that term in English, which dates back at least to 1864 and was modeled on both Croatian and Serbian nationalists of the time, is not a political endorsement of Yugoslavia, but is simply a label. As long as it remains the common name of the language in English, it will continue to be used here on Wikipedia."
Yep, you absolutely need to WP:COMMUNICATE. You can try starting at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Languages. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:02, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For the benefit of anyone reading this who wants a bit more background: Vienna Literary Agreement. Needless to say, this is a complex and divisive issue, and not something Wikipedia should be engaging in great-wrongs-righting over. AndyTheGrump (talk) 11:04, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of User: Donnellyeditor by 64andtim

    Dear Sir/ Madam

I hope you are well and that you can help me with this.

I uploaded a page about Tony Caldeira on Monday 12th June 2023 following many requests from various sources including journalists seeking information. After several days of work, I published the page in good faith for it to be deleted by 64andtim after two hours and given the reason that Wikipedia is not a free web hosting service.

I would like to contest this deletion as I thought that the information I was providing was of value to Wikipedia and enhancing the platform with information. The page was launched for the right reasons. I am not interested in Wikipedia as a free web hosting page. This is the first time I have been an editor of a page for Wikipedia and would like to know what I need to do for the page to be published and accepted so that the information is able to be accessed by the public who may contribute to the page and use it as an information platform for Tony Caldeira. Please can you assist with this so I can get an information page launched as soon as possible? Thank you for your help with this.

    Donnellyeditor (talk) 12:37, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletions are contested at deletion review. If you have a connection to Mr. Caldeira, that needs to be disclosed, see WP:COI and WP:PAID. Declaring a paid relationship is a terms of use requirement. 331dot (talk) 12:42, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply. I am employed at Caldeira Ltd and I am Tony Caldeira's personal assistant. Please can you help with how I go about getting the information published? Thank you for your help. Donnellyeditor (talk) 12:48, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please also note that your user page is not the correct location for creating articles, you should start at WP:AFC in future. Theroadislong (talk) 12:48, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Donnellyeditor, it might be worth reading the following policies before you create another article for Tony Calderia.
    - You have probably been asked by Tony Calderia to create an article about him. Read Wikipedia:When your boss tells you to edit Wikipedia to understand why this might not be the best idea.
    - It is very possible that Tony Caldeira does not qualify for an article as he may not meet the stringent Wikipedia:Notability (people) policy.
    - Please also note Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. Wikipedia is not a business directory, a promotional space, or an advertising platform.
    - Wikipedia is only interested in what third party Wikipedia:Reliable sources have to say about the subject. Qcne (talk) 14:24, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Donnellyeditor. Your deleted draft was overtly promotional and poorly referenced. Please be aware that all promotional, advertising, reputation management and public relations activity is strictly forbidden on Wikipedia, and that editors are routinely blocked for such behavior. Comply immediately with the Paid contributions disclosure. This is mandatory and non-negotiable. Cullen328 (talk) 09:01, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Bare and dead URLs

If a url is both dead and bare, and marked as bare, should you keep the bare url template, add a dead url template and remove the bare url template, or keep the {bare url}} and add {dead link}}? Thank you, History person 2 (talk) 12:46, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@History person 2: Hi there! If you can find an archived version, you could then add a full {{cite web}} template and remove the {{bare url}} template. If you cannot find an archived version, you could change the bare URL to something like [https://domain.com/blah/blah/blah domain.com], remove the {{bare url}} template and add a {{dead link}} template. Does TemplateData affect templates that call the primary template?

Kind of a confusing title, but basically: I wanted to modify the TemplateData on Template:Infobox court case. There are some template parameters that aren't used in the main template, but are used by templates that call the same infobox (like Template:Infobox California Supreme Court case). If I edit the TemplateData on the main infobox template to add descriptions to a parameter or mark one as required/suggested/deprecated, will it also affect the TemplateData on the infoboxes that call it, or would it be handled independently because they're two separate templates? –Galactic-Radiance (talk) 02:40, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

They need to be handled separately. VisualEditor doesn't know that the templates depend on each other and treats each as a black box. * Pppery * it has begun... 03:15, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Good to know, thank you. I didn't want to mark a parameter as deprecated in the main template and then potentially have it show up incorrectly elsewhere. –Galactic-Radiance (talk) 05:16, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Personal attack from multiple people

Hi. I'v been attacked my multiple WP-users, some even claiming that I'm a troll. (Please, if you are reading this, I need some help, I have no clue what's going on.) It seems like they think maybe that my account is stolen or something. Idk. I'm just speculating at this point. Anyone else there who is getting attacked by multiple Wikipedia users? Please, I need help! My articles are suddenly vanishing into draftspace. --Pek (talk) 17:13, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

PLEASE SOMEONE HELP! I'M BEING ATTACKED BY MULTIPLE USERS! They are deleting/redirecting everything I'v done!!! Please, if you are reading this, please help! (I think I'm having a panic attack.) --Pek (talk) 17:14, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Is anyone else being attacked? Am I the only one? I NEED HELP! --Pek (talk) 17:16, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Pek you keep on trying to create new articles. That's great, but you should consider starting with a draft, rather than in mainspace. Creating a new article directly in mainspace indicates that the article is already usable and somewhat encyclopedic. A draft indicates that you are still in the process of gathering references, etc.
I won't comment on your suspect personal attack. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 17:21, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Pek. You're not being attacked; this is nothing personal, though I understand why it feels that way. But several of your article creations are not sufficiently supported by reliable sources to prove notability or support their content, and other editors are noticing this and taking appropriate cleanup actions to deal with it. I definitely understand that it feels like you're being attacked, since multiple editors have all come down at once to look at some of your articles. But this isn't nefarious; you simply happened to add a link to a very heavily-monitored page, which many people looked at, followed, had doubts about, and looked to see whether the problem was more widespread (at least, that's what I'm guessing happened; I know that's how I came across your contributions). I'm sorry that all this is happening all at once, and I know that feels overwhelming, but the fact is that many of your articles simply don't have reliable sources that can be added, and Wikipedia articles that can't be supported by reliable sources need to be draftified/redirected/deleted. Languages list

On top of each article there is place where you can click on to see the article in different languages (if available). Until recently that worked well, I clicked on it and a list of languages appeared from which I could choose. Today however, when I clicked on that language field (which said "116 languages", nothing happened, no list appeared. I haven't changed anything on my computer recently. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.75.176.69 (talk) 19:03, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Could you please tell us the name of the article where you experienced this issue? GoingBatty (talk) 20:05, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response. It was multiple articles, amongst them the articles on Xuanwu Lake, Nanjing and Bus Rapid Transit. I don't think it has anything to do with specific articles, but rather with the language list in every article. I've tried several pages to check. As mentioned, it worked well a few days ago (I don't remember exactly how long ago I last used that feature), but now when I click on it, nothing happens. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.74.29.243 (talk) 23:55, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I used my computer to visit the articles Xuanwu Lake, Nanjing and Bus rapid transit and see 11, 116, and 38 languages respectively. Maybe try another browser or incognito mode, or maybe just a refresh? GoingBatty (talk) 03:26, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It works on my phone (Firefox Android) and tablet (Google Chrome), but not on the desktop PC (Firefox Windows). I didn't want to install a new browser. What makes me wonder is that it has worked until maybe a few days ago, and now no longer does, despite I haven't changed anything on my computer. Have there been any changes made to that language box by Wikipedia that would need an update or adjustment to my browser? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.223.84.56 (talk) 15:32, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Want to edit and post our company information?

Hey, I just try to edit notes over this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bra_size

Can you please suggest me that how to do that. Also, want to know that how to list our company information over Wikipedia?

    With Regards Femposh (talk) 03:52, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Femposh: Hi there! Creating a new Wikipedia article can be challenging, especially when you have a conflict of interest (COI) such as wanting to write about your company. To learn how to edit, I suggest you start at Help:Introduction. I suggest spending a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills. When you're ready to create an article, you would gather multiple published independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of your company, and determine whether they demonstrate that you meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". If so, you could create an account and declare your COI on your user page. Then follow the instructions at Help:Your first article, and be prepared for a process that may include months of waiting for review, rejections, and rewrites, before an article is created. If you are successful, then you could never edit the article directly due to your COI, but could submit edit requests on the article talk page. Hope this helps. GoingBatty (talk) 04:09, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You don't really list your company information on Wikipedia; if your company meets the notability guideline for companies, then it can have an article, but you would have very little say in what is included and what is not. WP:COMPORG may be worth reading as well.
As for the notes on Bra size, I'm going to assume you mean the notes section? That section is filled by the inline citations cited in the article. If you have a general reference that supports claims in the article, you might be able to add it to the references section below, but it'd be better to just directly cite the claim your reference backs up. Here's a guide to referencing for beginners. Skarmory (talk • contribs) 04:48, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    create a new page

Hello, i made and account and want to create a new page/article . I clicked on 'edit' by mistake and now I can't see how to get back to the beginning. Please help. Thanks Sebastien Bechara (talk) 09:23, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

First things first, many Wikipedia editors (including myself) would encourage you not to try to create an article as a newcomer – it is one of the hardest things you can do on Wikipedia, and if you don't have a grasp of the place, your article stands a decent chance of never making it to the main article space without being deleted. If you really want to give it a shot, read Help:Your first article, but I'd get used to editing articles in general first.. (Also, if you're here to write about a topic you have a conflict of interest with, there are additional rules and guidelines to follow; here's a guide for COI editing.)
As for your other question – if you click on "edit" and want to get back to reading an article, you can just remove the "?action=edit" or "&action=edit" and anything that follows it in the URL. Otherwise, I'm not entirely sure what you're asking about? ("how to get back to the beginning" is vague.) Skarmory (talk • contribs) 09:32, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Recent changes filters

I do recent changes patrol and I typically set filters such as "likely have problems" and "likely bad faith", but sometimes one or both of these are missing entirely. For example, a moment ago, both those options were gone, but now they're both back. What causes this? I asked on the related talk page, but ironically nobody seems to be watching it. Matt Deres (talk) 14:25, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This is a long-term bug and I'm not really sure why it hasn't been fixed yet. It existed when I was vandalism patrolling back in 2022 and possibly even 2020-21, though I don't remember for that stage. I usually just wait until they come back. Here's a phab ticket on it, there might be others too. Skarmory (talk • contribs) 21:13, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Override policy

Can consensus override policy and guidelines? Crainsaw (talk) 14:29, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Crainsaw: Yes, in rare circumstances. See WP:IAR, and CAREFULLY read all of the linked pages. However, do recognize that some policies have actual real-world legal implications and cannot be ignored. The most obvious of these is copyright violation. -Arch dude (talk) 14:49, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Crainsaw: while it may not always apply, general questions like yours without reference to a specific article or talk page raise a red flag for me. We very often get a general question that is intended to solicit an answer that supports an argument. Please provide a link to the situation that raised the question. -Arch dude (talk) 14:54, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's not me, another editor was in a discussion with me over the use of archaic terms, when I provided him with a policy which said we should use the matest English words unless in a quotation, he said consensus is against me. -Crainsaw (talk) 17:13, 18th June 2023 (UTC)
I think the other editor is right. When quoting from an English-language source, you should use the terminology of the source. Maproom (talk) 19:56, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, we already came to consensus there Crainsaw (talk) 19:57, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Questions

In the "Some works" paragraph of the István Ferenczy page, should the names of the paintings be written in italics, or not in this case? On the Miklós Izsó page, what are the wikilinks for "Classicism" and "academic"? In the "Selected paintings" paragraph of the Gyula Benczúr page, should the names of the paintings be written in italics, or not in this case? Should "self-portrait" be written in italics or not? For instance, on this page: Károly Ferenczy. Should the painting "Greek Woman", on the page Jakab Marastoni, be written in italics or not? I putted it in italics. Animated gifs

This might or might not be the place to ask, but is there a way to cycle through the ubiquitous animated gifs at leisure, one frame at a time? Werner Vogel (talk) 17:24, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@werner vogel: gifs of what? also, this is the wikipedia help desk, where we help editors with wikipedia editing. your question may be better suited to one of the reference desks. lettherebedarklight晚安 17:36, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, which particular help page would that be? An example is the second map in this article
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Empire
but animated gifs are found all over the place, and they scroll to fast. It would be nice to look at them a frame at a time. Werner Vogel (talk) 17:48, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Werner Vogel: Hi there! When I try to view File:Roman Empire map.ogv, it opens in a new window. Within that window is a pause button I can use to study one frame before unpausing and letting the animation get to the next slide where I can pause again, and so on. GoingBatty (talk) 20:21, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
File:Roman Empire map.ogv is a video. The animated gif in Roman Empire is File:Romempgif.gif. @Werner Vogel: MediaWiki does not have a feature to pause an animated gif and move it one frame at a time. The file is sent to your browser which controls the viewing. I don't know wether any common browsers have such a feature. You may have to install a browser extension or download the file and view it with other software. If you post your operating system and browser to Wikipedia:Reference desk/Computing then they can give advice. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:38, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both. There does not seem to be a simple solution to this. Werner Vogel (talk) 20:43, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Twinkle Welcoming Prefs

Hello. I have been using twinkle to welcome new users who haven't already been welcomed, and I figured that if I changed my welcoming preferences using the twinkle preferences interface, it can and will go a lot faster. So I did it, by selecting "welcome automatically" and changing my template to use automatically to welcome-cookie, but it didn't work. It doesn't auto-select welcome-cookie, nor does it even auto welcome. Any help? Cherrell410 (talk) 22:30, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Adding references in multiple languages

I speak English (natively) and Japanese (fluently). I am reading about Fujiwara no Teika in a Japanese text.

There is some factual information in the English Wikipedia article that is unsourced.

Is it ok to add a reference to a Japanese source? Bolaurent (talk) 02:32, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    @Bolaurent: It's perfectly acceptable, and encouraged! Go ahead. Skarmory (talk • contribs) 03:23, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Bolaurent It's perfectly acceptable to add a reference to a reliable Japanese-language source; and if there's no reliable English-language source that could be used instead, it's encouraged. Best is to provide the title, etc both in Japanese script and hepburnified, and also in English translation. Template:Cite book (etc) will automate the formatting of such data. You're under no obligation to use the "Cite" templates; but if you choose not to use them, be careful not to give the impression that your English translation of a title is the title. -- Hoary (talk) 05:35, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Edit counter

Is there any code that checks your edit count and returns a number based on how many edits you made to the wiki? 📖 (💬/📜) 03:29, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello @TheBigBookOfNaturalScience.
Yes. You can find your edit count by first, clicking the Contributions button located (next to the log out) on the top right of this page. There, scroll all the way down and you will find a small box. Go ahead and click the Edit count button. You can see your edit counts there.
    Hope this helps! 🛧Layah50♪🛪 ( 話す? 一緒に飛ぼう!) 04:31, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Layah50 I want to use it as an input for template, like this one so I don't have to manually edit the number every time I make an edit. 📖 (💬/📜) 05:08, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ref number 5 is not looking good - the reference is fine but there are problems. Please fix if able. Sorry 58.179.137.31 (talk) 07:24, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If it was the spare </ref> before it, I removed it. If you stumble across this error again, you can safely remove the spare tag without breaking anything. Skarmory (talk • contribs) 07:49, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
