Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is an upcoming 2009 science fiction film due for release on June 26, 2009. It is the sequel to 2007's Transformers, which was the first live action Transformers film. Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg return respectively as director and executive producer, while Shia LaBeouf reprises the role of Sam Witwicky, the human caught in the war between Autobots and Decepticons. Shooting began in May 2008.

Bay desired to give the sequel a bigger budget for a global scale and better characterization for a larger cast of robots. The main hurdle in getting the film produced was overcoming the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike, as well as possible strikes by the Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild. Bay met his shooting date with the help of previsualization and a scriptment by his writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and series newcomer Ehren Kruger.

Premise

Roberto Orci described the film's theme as the robots confronting "being away from home",[2] with the focus between the robots and humans "much more evenly balanced".[3] The tone will be similar to the first film, but "the stakes will be higher"[4] (with a more global sensibility),[5] and there will be more focus on the science fiction elements. Orci also said "we'll be better at modulating [the humor] this time". Structurally, the plot will be "more organically interconnected in that TF1 had the structure of 3 story lines coming together at Hoover. TF2 will have a different structure."[4]

Production

In September 2007, Paramount announced a June 26, 2009 release date for the sequel to Transformers,[6] and Bay began creating animatics of action sequences featuring characters rejected for the first film. This would allow animators to complete sequences if the Directors Guild of America went on strike in July 2008.[7] The director considered making a small project in between Transformers and its sequel, but knew "you have your baby and you don't want someone else to take it".[8] The film was given a larger budget than the first film, which cost $151 million,[9] and some of the action scenes rejected for the original were written into the sequel.[10] Writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman originally passed on the sequel because of a busy schedule. The studio began courting other writers in May 2007, but as they were unimpressed with their pitches, they convinced Orci and Kurtzman to return.[7] The studio also signed on Ehren Kruger, as he impressed Bay and Hasbro president Brian Goldner with his knowledge of the Transformers mythology.[11] The writing trio were paid $8 million.[7]

Screenwriting was interrupted by the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike, but to avoid production delays the writers spent two weeks writing a treatment, which they handed in the night before the strike began.[12][13] Bay expanded the outline into a sixty-page scriptment:[14] Orci explained Bay "came up with some really fun gags and a few descriptions of the kind of hardware he will need for production".[15] The three writers spent four months writing the screenplay while "locked" in two hotel rooms by Bay.[16] Before Transformers was released, producer Tom DeSanto said he had come up with "a very cool idea" to introduce the Dinobots and Constructicons,[17] while Bay was interested in an aircraft carrier, which he considered for the first film.[18] Kurtzman created the film's title.[19] Orci claimed they could not justify the Dinobots' choice of form,[20] admitting he was also dismissive of them. During filming though, he became fonder of them because of their popularity with fans.[21]

The Bethlehem Steel site in Lehigh Valley was used for a battle scene that would take place in a fictional Chinese city.

Filming began in Los Angeles, California in May 2008.[22] From June 2,[14] three days were spent on an action sequence at the Bethlehem Steel site in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which was used to represent a portion of a fictional Chinese city.[23] Afterwards, they shot at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.[24] The crew moved to Philadelphia on June 9, where they shot at the Exelon plants in Delaware; the University of Pennsylvania; the Eastern State Penitentiary; Fairmount Park; Rittenhouse Square (which represents Paris); and Wanamaker's.[25][26][27] They moved to Princeton University on June 22.[28] Filming there angered some students at the University of Pennsylvania, believing Bay had chosen to reshoot scenes at Princeton, the school's historical rival, and script Princeton's name in the movie. However, neither the University of Pennsylvania nor Princeton gave Bay permission to be named in the film because of a "funny 'mom' scene" that both felt "did not represent the school".[29]

Around $5 million was spent during filming in Philadelphia, Bethlehem, and New Jersey.[23] Bay scheduled a break for filming beginning on June 30, turning his attention to animation and second unit scenes because of the potential 2008 Screen Actors Guild strike.[30] Orci joked "Optimus and company are also the stars, and fortunately for us, they are not part of a union!"[31] Shooting also took place at the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group in Tucson, Arizona,[32] and Long Beach, California, which continued shooting of the Chinese battle.[33] The crew shot at Holloman Air Force Base and White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico during September. The two locations were used for Qatar in the first film. By October, they will film in Egypt and Jordan,[34] where filming will end.[35] To stage an action scene at White Sands, the buildings built on the sand had explosives rigged inside of them, and six F-16s were flown over the area.[36]

Casting for extras was held in Tucson, Arizona on September 27th for scenes that will be shot the first week of October. The film was billed as "Prime Directive," a fake working title. The Tucson scenes will be shoot at the Tucson International Airport and the Boneyard at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.[37]

The producers expect that with a bigger budget and the special effects worked out, the Transformers will have a larger role. Peter Cullen recalled, "Don Murphy mentioned to me, 'Only because of the tremendous expense to animate Optimus Prime, he'll be in just a certain amount of [the first film].' But he said, 'Next time, if the movie is a success, you're gonna be in it a ton.'"[38] The director hopes to include more close-ups of the robots' faces.[39] Scott Farrar returned as visual effects supervisor, and anticipated moodier use of lighting as well as deeper roles for the Decepticons. He stated that with the bigger deadline, post-production will be a "circus".[40] Hasbro became more involved in the designs of the robots than in the first film.[4] They insisted on keeping the alternate modes of some of the returning characters similar, so people would not have to buy toys of the same characters.[41]

Cast and characters

Humans

  • Shia LaBeouf returns as Sam Witwicky, the teenager who killed Megatron. He attends an East Coast college to learn astronomy.[42] On July 27, 2008, LaBeouf was involved in a car crash and had to undergo hand surgery. The character getting burned in the story was an unrelated decision.[43] LaBeouf said production was only delayed by two days after his accident because Bay made up for it by filming second unit scenes, and he recovered from the accident a few weeks earlier than expected, allowing him to return to the set.[44] Bay had suggested the hand injury will be written into the story,[45] but Orci said on-set rewrites were done to protect his hand for the remainder of the shoot.[46]
  • Megan Fox returns as Mikaela Banes, Sam's girlfriend, who cannot afford to attend college with him.[42] Fox had lost much weight for her role in Jennifer's Body, and had to gain ten pounds within three weeks. She explained "Michael [Bay] doesn't like skinny girls."[47]
  • Josh Duhamel returns as Captain William Lennox, an ally of the Autobots.[22] Since the first film Lennox has become part of an international taskforce battling Decepticons with the Autobots.[48]
  • John Turturro returns as Reggie Simmons, former agent of the terminated Sector 7 unit, which monitored the Transformers activity on Earth.[22]
  • Kevin Dunn and Julie White return as [[Witwicky family#Ron]| and Judy, Sam's parents. Orci wrote, "Love them! Gotta have them back."[52] He confirmed they learned the truth about the Transformers while off-screen in the last film.[53]

Rainn Wilson cameos as a university professor,[22] while Kym Whitley has an unnamed part.[54]

Transformers

Autobots

  • Peter Cullen voices Autobot leader Optimus Prime.[55] He retains his alternate mode of a blue Peterbilt truck with red flame decals. Cullen recorded a voiceover for the opening scene in August 2008, but will begin the majority of voice work in November.[56][57] A live action cameo has been written for Cullen.[58] There is a rumor that he will be able to combine with Jetfire in the film.[59] This may be a nod to the ''Transformers: Armada'' series.
The voices of the other Autobots are unconfirmed
  • Arcee, an Autobot motorcycle with a feminine personality and appearance. Arcee was dropped from the first film as the writers felt there was not enough time to explain her "gender".[62] Orci stated the issue could just be ignored in the film.[63] Arcee has been redesigned from the concept art used for her toy and comic book appearances.[64] Chris Mowry, writer of the film's prequel comics, had confirmed Arcee's appearance, but references to these in his interviews were removed at Paramount's behest.[65]
  • Jetfire, an Autobot SR-71 Blackbird. There is a rumor that he will be able to combine with Optimus Prime.[67] This could be the nod to the Transformers: Armada series.

Decepticons

None of the voices of the Decepticons are confirmed
  • Starscream, the Decepticon air commander, who flew into space at the end of the previous film. Orci confirmed he will have more dialogue.[4] He transformed into an F-22 Raptor and was voiced by Charlie Adler. Mowry stated Starscream differs from his 1980s incarnation because "His motivations are more for the species. He's definitely at odds with what Prime and Megatron have been doing. He thinks that they’ve both been consumed with greed, for their own selfish reasons, but as he finds out, his plans start to fall through as he’s kind of becoming overwhelmed with the same greed that they had."[69]
  • Soundwave, Megatron's most loyal lieutenant.[69] In the 1980s toy line, Soundwave was a tape deck. The filmmakers had tried to work him into the first film twice, and these roles eventually evolved into Blackout (a MH-53 Pave Low helicopter) and Frenzy (who changed into a CD Player and later into a mobile phone). The latter character was particularly thought to be too different from the original.[70][71]
    • Ravage, a minion of Soundwave. Hasbro said he has a "raw" beast mode,[66] with a body resembling Frenzy with a cat like face, dreadlocks and a bird-like beak.[72]
  • The Constructicons, several construction vehicle Decepticons who can combine into a single robot.[66] This single robot was named Devastator in the 1980s toy line, but this name was mistakenly given to Brawl in the first film. The name Bonecrusher, who was one of the Constructicons in the 1980s and Transformers: Energon, was also used for a Decepticon killed in the first film.

Unicron's Servent

  • The Fallen. Introduced in the second Transformers: The War Within comic book (2003), The Fallen was one of the original thirteen Transformers who became a servant of Unicron. Mowry and creator Simon Furman, who is writing the comic book adaptation, confirmed the filmmakers are using the character in interviews given during San Diego Comic Con 2008, but around a week after their publication, all references to The Fallen were removed from them.[73][69][65]

Others

Lorenzo di Bonaventura said there will be around three times more robots than in the first film, which had thirteen Autobots and Decepticons (and four minor machines mutated by the All Spark).[74] Other robots include Autobot "Twins" who transform into an ice cream van (their names will be determined in post-production,[75] as the dialogue can be re-recorded with the animation);[76] an Autobot Chevrolet Trax;[77] an Audi R8;[78] and there will be some robots who can transform into weapons.[79] Orci confirmed the Decepticons will have whole dialogue scenes to themselves.[4]

Marketing

Luxoflux is developing a video game based on the film, which Activision will publish.[80] IDW Publishing will publish a five-issue prequel comic entitled Transformers: Destiny, written by Chris Mowry and drawn by Alex Milne, who collaborated on the company's previous comic based on the films, The Reign of Starscream. The comic begins in December 2008. Destiny comprises two four-part stories, the first of which is entitled Alliance.[81] Simon Furman is writing the adaptation of the film.[73][69] Product placement partners on the film include Wal-Mart, YouTube and Nike, Inc.[82]

Release

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will be released in regular and IMAX 3D theaters on June 26, 2009.[83][84]
