90210 is a teen drama developed by Rob Thomas and Jeff Judah and Gabe Sachs. It is the fourth series in the Beverly Hills, 90210 franchise created by Darren Star. The show premiered in the US on The CW on September 2, 2008 with a two-hour series premiere event.[1] It also aired on Global in Canada on the same day.[2]
90210 was the first series produced by CBS Productions (successor-in-interest to Spelling Television) under the company's re-launch since the first season of Ghost Whisperer.
Production and casting history
The Hollywood Reporter announced on March 8, 2008 that The CW Television Network is developing a contemporary spin-off of Beverly Hills, 90210. According to Nellie Andreeva with The Hollywood Reporter, "Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas was in talks to pen the project, which has been put on the fast track by the network". The story also noted that original 90210 creator Darren Star is not involved with the project.[3] Kristin Dos Santos confirmed onher "Watch with Kristin" blog at E! Online that the show is indeed a spin-off with completely new characters, and not a remake.[4]
Further casting details of the 2008 spin-off emerged as The Hollywood Reporter announced on March 19, 2008 that The CW had begun casting even before a script was completed. The show began production on June 25, 2008.
On April 15, 2008, Rob Thomas announced that he was stepping down as the creator of the series, due to his commitment to two ABC drama pilots. Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah (What About Brian, Freaks & Geeks) are now the new producers of the series; they wrote a new version of the script.[5]
The first actor to be cast was Dustin Milligan on March 31, 2008, as Ethan Ward,[3] followed by AnnaLynne McCord on April 15.[6] Actress/singer Hilary Duff was rumored to have been offered a part on the spin-off as Annie Wilson, a theater and music student, but she told reports that it was "not true".[7][8] The role was filled by Shenae Grimes, most well-known for her role as Darcy Edwards on Degrassi: The Next Generation.[9] The next actor to be cast was Lori Loughlin in the role of Debbie Wilson April 28, 2008.[10] The following day, Jessica Walter was cast as Tabitha Wilson, the 60-ish actress and alcoholic grandmother,[11][3] and Ryan Eggold as unorthodox teacher Ryan Matthews.[12] The cast of teenagers was rounded out when Jessica Stroup (April 30),[13] Tristan Wilds[14] and Michael Steger (both May 2),[15] were cast as Erin "Silver" Silver, Dixon Wilson and Navid Shirazi respectively. Finally, to round up the cast, Rob Estes was cast in May 19 as Harrison "Harry" Wilson.[16]
On May 10, it was announced that Jennie Garth,[17] of the original series, would reprise her role of Kelly Taylor for the spin-off. On July 2, 2008, PerezHilton.com reported that Shannen Doherty was in talks to reprise her role as Brenda.[18]
On June 1 and July 26 respectively, it was revealed that old sets such as the high school used for the original show, Torrance High School and the Peach Pit were to be used in this series as well.[19]
Numerous guest have been cast since such as Kellan Lutz and Meghan Markle on July 7, George Evans, a lacrosse player from a wealthy family and Wendy, a sexy student at West Beverly Hills High respectively[3], Jessica Lowndes as Adrianna, a theatre "goddess" who suffers a drug addiction[20], later upgraded to a starring role in Jessica Walters's spot[21], Maeve Quinlan as Adrianna's mother Constance on August 6,[22], Josh Henderson as Sean, Harry's biological son with Tracy Clark on October 10, [23], Lauren London as cheerleader Christina on October 31[24], reality star Lauren Conrad as Kayla Andress an aspiring actress friend of Adrianna on November 28[25] and Aimee Teegarden as Rhonda, a West Beverley student on December 2.[26]

Plot
Much like the original show, 90210 follows the move of a family (parents Debbie and Harry Wilson, their daughter Annie and adoptive son Dixon). This time however, Harry is actually from Beverly Hills and comes back both to look after his mother Tabitha and to work as the principal at West Beverly Hills High School. All of them struggle to adjust to their new lives: Annie has a hard time balancing romances (starting with rich kid Ty) and friendships as well as popularity and identity; Dixon has issues with his adoption and African-American heritage; Harry and Debbie struggle with the revelation that Harry has a son with Tracy Clark, his former high school sweetheart.
Tracy Clark has a daughter of her own, Naomi Clark, who dates jock Ethan Ward, brief rival of Dixon, with whom she soon breaks up and who gets back with Annie with whom he had a fling years prior. Both girls alternate between enemies in a love triangle and almost sisters due to their parents' child. Their respective mothers find in a love triangle of their own after Tracy's marriage to Charles Clark implodes (which Naomi takes quite badly) and she appears to want Harry back. Naomi's fight with Annie forces her out of the crowd after she uses Annie's ex-boyfriend Jason as a weapon to get back at her for hiding her relationship with Ethan. She becomes friends with older girls and starts flirting with Ozzie, a rather alternative student.
Sean Cavanaugh arrives in Beverly Hills as the purported biological son of Harry and Tracy, and is introduced as an Army soldier in between tours of duty in Iraq. Harry struggles to regain the years lost with his "son," while Annie, Dixon, and Debbie have a hard time accepting him. Sean is eventually revealed to be a con artist when Annie and Debbie convince Harry to demand Sean take a paternity test before giving him $200,000 to cover gambling debts allegedly owed by his adoptive father. He leaves town without a trace, but not before swindling Tracy out of the money. Naomi blames Annie for Sean's heist, as Tracy was forced to make concessions in her divorce to raise the money.
Naomi's best friend, fallen starlet Adrianna Duncan battles a drug addiction. This gets her into trouble when Harry decides to clean the school, thanks to the help of a cop, Kimberly McIntyre, under cover as a student. The said cop begins a relationship with teacher Ryan Matthews which gets him into trouble with the school. Guilt-ridden, Kimberly does her best to solve the case, giving Ryan his job back, although he takes a leave of absence to rethink his life, and Adrianna lands in rehab, after almost getting Naomi in legal troubles as she took the blame for the drugs. There she begins a relationship with Navid Shirazi, head of the school's paper and Dixon's best friend, who paid for her rehab. Although at first she only does it to "repay" him, they start to genuinely care about each other. Adrianna later discovers she is pregnant as a result of her promiscuity while she was addicted.
Also featured is Silver, Kelly Taylor's half sister and Naomi's former best friend until the latter revealed Silver's father's affair. She quickly befriends Annie and starts dating Dixon, who is somewhat taken aback by her not-so-90210 lifestyle, as she is a virgin who doesn't care about popularity. Kelly herself has become guidance counselor and briefly dates Ryan before leaving to try and work on her relationship with Dylan McKay, which fails. When she returns, she not only discovers his relationship with student/cop Kimberly but also that he slept with her "best friend" Brenda Walsh when she came to direct the school's musical, briefly recreating the rift between the two friends. Following Brenda's discovery that she cannot have children, however, the women are drawn together in an accord once again.
Characters
The series revolves around the Wilson Family's transition from Kansas to California, similar to how the original series revolved around the Walsh family's recent move to California from Minnesota. In addition, many old plotlines have been resumed or recycled from the original series.

International reception and debut
Australian broadcaster Network Ten cancelled it after showing just five episodes. The show premiered in New Zealand on TV3 (now on C4 from November 12, 2008) on October 15th and early ratings have been positive. In Brazil the show was premiered on November 5th on Sony Entertainment Television (Latin America). It premiered in the Republic of Ireland on RTE Two Thursday, November 6, 2008. In Sweden the show premiered on November 24 on TV400, being a flop so far with poor ratings seen by only 45,000 people in its first episode[35]. In The Netherlands Net 5 aired the first episode on January 2nd, 2009 with an acceptable 383.000 viewers. The premiere dates in other parts of the world are not yet announced. In Malaysia the said program was not available in Channel V except in STAR World (Both channels are owned by STAR TV in Asia) but it was display the actual time in Malaysia Time Zone aside from Hong Kong Time Zone.
