January 2, 2010. The first of three accidents in Uttar Pradesh on this day takes place near the town of Etawah, about 170 miles (270 kilometers) southwest of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state, when the Lichchavi Express entering the station in heavy fog runs into the stationary Magadh Express train stopped there. Ten people, including the driver of one of the trains, are injured.[1] At least 10 people were reported to have been killed.[2]
January 2, 2010. The Gorakhdham Express and Prayagraj Express collide near the Panki railway station in Kanpur, about 100 kilometres (62 mi) southwest of Lucknow, leave five people dead and about 40 others injured. [3]
January 2, 2010. At Pratapgarh, 61 kilometres (38 mi) from Allahabad, the Sarayu Express plows into a tractor trailer at an unmanned railway crossing. Though nobody is injured, the engine of the train is severely damaged.[4]
January 2, 2010. All seven coaches of the Arunachal Pradesh Express, running between Murkongselek and Rangiya derail between Helem and Nij Bogaon in Assam, India in the early hours of the day. No passengers are hurt. [5]
January 3, 2010. Two passenger trains collide at Bilecik. One of the drivers is killed and seven passengers are injured.[6]
January 4, 2010 – Helsinki, Finland – An intercity train breaks in two, and four carriages crash into the main railway station's concrete buffer stop. Timely actions of operators and a guard divert the train to a secondary track, and the platform was evacuated. One of the carriages plunges into the Holiday Inn hotel's offices causing severe structural damage. There were no casualties. Only the conductor of the train, which carried no passengers, was slightly hurt.[7]
January 4, 2010. A freight train hauled by a Class 66 locomotive derails at Carrbridge in snowy weather, blocking the Highland Main Line.[8] The freight train passed a signal at danger and was deliberately derailed on trap points.[9] The line was reopened on 12 January.[10]
January 16, 2010. Three people die and around a dozen are injured when two express trains collide in thick fog near Tundla, 25 kilometres (16 mi) from Agra, in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The driver of one of the trains apparently did not react to a signal, slamming his train into another on the same track.[11] [12] [13][14]
January 17, 2010. The Lucknow-Sultanpur Harihar Nath Express strikes a car at an unmanned railway crossing under Haidergarh police station area on Sunday afternoon in Barabanki district, India. Two persons traveling in the car die on the spot and four others who sustained serious injuries were referred to Trauma Centre in Lucknow. Train traffic on this route is disrupted for nearly two hours after the accident. This is the fifth accident in a series of similar accidents in the area.[15] [16]
January 22, 2010. Three bogies of a goods train derail at Sathiyaon station near Azamgarh, in Uttar Pradesh, disrupting rail traffic in the region. No one is injured. Traffic is disrupted on the busy Varanasi–Azamgarh–Gorakhpur route. [17]
February 15, 2010. Two passenger trains collide head-on in Buizingen near Brussels. 18 people are killed and 162 wounded. [18]
March 16, 2010. A 93-car BNSF train from Barstow, California enroute to San Diego, California derails. Three of the boxcars fall into a ravine near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. Amtrak and Coaster services are canceled for a short while. The cause of the accident is still to be determined. The driver, conductor, and fireman have no injuries.[citation needed]
March 24, 2010. Sixteen goods wagons runaway for 8 km (5 mi) from a goods yard at Alnabru in Oslo to hit and destroy a quayside warehouse. Three people die, and four are seriously injured.[19]
March 29, 2010. At least thirty-eight people die after two female suicide bombers strike the Moscow Metro.
April 1, 2010. A locomotive runs into a stationary passenger train after its brakes fail during a test ride in Spišská Nová Ves, Slovakia, killing three people and injuring seriously eight others.[20]
April 12, 2010. A passenger train hits a landslide and partially derails near Merano, South Tyrol. 9 people killed, 28 injured.[21]
April 21, 2010. The coaches of a luxury tourist train operated by Rovos Rail, run away and derail outside Pretoria during a locomotive changeover. Three crew members die in the incident: two die at the scene while the third, a woman four months pregnant, dies in hospital. The accident also leaves 9 passengers injured, six of them critically.[22]
May 4, 2010. A passenger train collides with a freight train approximately 3 km (2 mi) south of Craigieburn railway station, injuring 5. [23]
May 13, 2010. A northbound Amtrak Piedmont collides with a truck towing a lowboy trailer in Mebane, North Carolina. 11 are injured. [24]
May 23, 2010. A passenger train derails in China, killing at least eight people, after being knocked off the tracks by a landslide in a mountainous area of Jiangxi province.[25]
May 28, 2010. A train derails in the West Midnapore district of West Bengal, India, caused by either sabotage or a bomb that damaged the railway track, and is struck by an oncoming goods train, resulting in at least 90 passenger deaths.[27]
June 6, 2010. A passenger train collides with boulders that had fallen on the line near Falls of Cruachan, derails and catches fire. Several people are hospitalised.[28][29]
