List of countries with IKEA stores

The original IKEA store was opened in Sweden in 1958. The first stores outside Sweden were opened in Norway (1963) and Denmark (1969). In the 1970s, stores spread to other parts of Europe, with the first store outside Scandinavia opening in Switzerland (1973), followed by Germany (1974). During the same decade, stores were opened in other parts of the world, including Japan, (1974), Australia, Canada, and Hong Kong (1975), The Netherlands and Singapore (1978). Germany, with 45 stores, is IKEA's biggest market, followed by the United States, with 35. IKEA now has 316 stores in 38 countries. However, the company has thus far not shown much of a presence in the developing countries. The location for the store is vitally important for IKEA as it should be near major roads, freeways and/or public transport.

The following List of IKEA stores is arranged by date of first store in each country.

Japan	1974	Kobe	5	A joint venture with a Japanese department store. IKEA withdrew from the market in 1986 because of stagnant sales, then returned in 2006 to Funabashi, Chiba under a distribution partnership with the Mitsubishi Corporation.
Australia	1975	Sydney (Artarmon)	7	The Sydney store moved to Rhodes during 2005-2006. There are stores in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide (Perth and Adelaide are a franchise owned by CEBAS Pty LTD). The Perth store has been relocated from Osborne Park to Innaloo as of February 14, 2008. There are currently two more stores under construction in Australia including Tempe, New South Wales and Springvale, Victoria which are both due for completion in late 2011.
Canada	1975	Dartmouth, Nova Scotia	11	IKEA opened its first North American store in 1975 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, although that store—and another in Victoria, British Columbia—were closed in 1988 due to high operational costs and market size. As of 2011, there are eleven stores in four provinces—two in British Columbia (Richmond and Coquitlam), two in Alberta (Calgary and Edmonton), five in Ontario (Burlington, Etobicoke, North York, Ottawa, and Vaughan), and two in Quebec (Boucherville and Montreal). IKEA will enter its fifth province when it opens its twelfth Canadian location in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 2012.
Hong Kong	1975	Kowloon (Tsim Sha Tsui)	3	The original store opened in 1975 in Tsim Sha Tsui was closed. As of 2007, IKEA has 3 stores and 1 warehouse in Hong Kong: Causeway Bay, Kowloon Bay, Shatin, and Sheung Shui. All are franchises owned by Dairy Farm International Holdings. The Shatin Store was expanded in December 2009. In summer 2010, the Kowloon Bay store was relocated from Telford Plaza to Megabox, with area of 150,000 square feet (14,000 m2) it is currently the largest store in Hong Kong.

The Netherlands	1978	Sliedrecht	12	The city of Groningen has the 3nd largest store from Europe with 42,000 square metres (450,000 sq ft). Newest stores are in Haarlem and Amersfoort. The old store in Sliedrecht closed in 2006.
Spain	1980	Gran Canaria (Las Palmas)	15	There are 11 stores on mainland Spain & 4 stores in the Canary Islands & the Balearic Islands.
Iceland	1981	Reykjavík	1	Replaced by a new store which opened in Garðabær in October 2006.
France	1981	Paris (Bobigny)	28	With 7 stores, Paris has more IKEAs than any other city.
Saudi Arabia	1983	Jeddah	3	Stores in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran. The Riyadh and Jeddah stores have been completely rebuilt and relocated in recent years. The store in Dhahran opened in 2008.
Belgium	1984	Brussels (Zaventem and Ternat)	6	A new store, the seventh of Belgium, will have been opened by November 2008 in Ghent.
Kuwait	1984	Kuwait City	1	Opened in the industrial district of Shuwaikh in 1984; transferred to a significantly larger new facility at The Avenues (a shopping mall) in early 2007.
United States	1985	Plymouth Meeting	38	Built in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania; has since moved to Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. The original IKEA building has since been demolished and is now a Whole Foods Market. In 1992, IKEA acquired the California based STØR chain, adding 3 of that chain's 4 locations to their US presence. Most-recent stores opened since 2008 include Tampa, Florida; Charlotte, North Carolina; Brooklyn, New York; and Centennial, Colorado.
United Kingdom	1987	Warrington, Cheshire	18	The largest UK stores are in Croydon in London and at Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex, each with a capacity of 37,000 square metres (400,000 sq ft). The newest stores were completed in December 2007 in Coventry city centre and at the Holywood Exchange in Belfast. In November 2007 a planning application was approved for an 18th store in Southampton, which opened on February 12, 2009. Future UK locations under consideration are Portsmouth and Slough . Plans to build a store in Sheffield have been shelved.

Hungary	1990	Budapest	2	There are two stores in Hungary. One in the capital city Budapest and one in Budaörs. Two other stores are planned.
Poland	1991	Warsaw (Janki)	8	Original location in central Warsaw is now closed. Warsaw has two stores in Janki and Targówek. There are also stores in Gdańsk, Wrocław, Katowice, Kraków, Poznań and Łódź. Three new stores are to be opened in the upcoming years: in Lublin (2012), Częstochowa (2013), and Rzeszów (2014). A location in Bydgoszcz, planned for 2011, has been postponed.
Czech Republic	1991	Prague (Budějovická)	4	There are two IKEA stores in Prague - one at Zličín and one at Černý most. In Czechia there are two more shops - in the second largest city of Czechia, Brno, and in Ostrava. The first original store at Budějovická - Prague 4 was abandoned. Both Zličín and Černý most are located at the periphery of Prague and at the endstations of underground line B. Another will be open at 2011 in Hradec Králové.
United Arab Emirates	1991	Dubai	2	The U.A.E.'s stores are located in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The IKEA Store in Abu Dhabi is currently located at the Marina Mall. The Dubai store recently moved to the Festival Waterfront Centre.
Slovakia	1992	Bratislava	1	Original store was closed upon the opening of a new store in the Avion Shopping Park. There are two more stores planned in Slovakia, in Košice and Žilina.

Finland	1996	Espoo	4	New store in Vantaa in 2005, in Raisio in 2008 and in Tampere in 2010. Tampere store is the biggest IKEA in Finland. At Kuopio, IKEA is building and it's ready at 2011. At Vaasa is building too IKEA. It's ready 2012.
Malaysia	1996	Bandar Utama, Selangor	1	Re-located to Mutiara Damansara, Selangor in 2003. The new IKEA store in Mutiara Damansara was the largest in Asia at that time with a shop floor area of approximately 27,000 square metres (290,000 sq ft). IKEA also set to open stores in Johor Baru, Penang and the Klang Valley.
China	1998	Shanghai	9	Most recent store opening in Dalian in 2009 and Shenyang in 2010 which is also the second largest IKEA store in the world. IKEA is also aiming at expanding a second store in Beijing as well as a new store in Wuxi.
Russia	2000	Moscow (Khimki)	12	There are 3 IKEA stores in Moscow (Khimki, Teply Stan and Belaya Dacha), 2 stores in St. Petersburg (Parnas and Dybenko), stores in Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Novaya Adygea (in Adygea near Krasnodar), Omsk and Ufa. The IKEA Stores in Russia are in connection with MEGA malls developed by IKEA. New IKEA stores and MEGA malls in Samara are under construction.
Israel	April 2001	Netanya	1	The second store opened on March 9, 2010 in Rishon LeZion, a suburb of Tel Aviv. The store has a zone of 38,000 square metres (410,000 sq ft). Also, it was reported that the third store will be built in Kiryat Ata which located east to Haifa. The store in Netanya burned on 5 February 2011.
Greece	2001	Thessaloniki	5	The first store opened in Thessaloniki on October 24, 2001. The second store opened in Athens (Airport Retail Park) on April 23, 2004. The third store, also in Athens (Egaleo), opened on March 26, 2008. The fourth store, in Larissa, opened on October 14, 2009. The fifth store, in Ioannina, opened in December 2010. Three more stores are planned by 2013 in Athens (third store, possibly in Elefsina), Heraklion and in the new shopping center Iasmos Park in Komotini.
Portugal	2004	Lisbon (Alfragide)	3	Second store opened on July 31, 2007 in Matosinhos, with 36,000 square metres (390,000 sq ft), and third store opened on May 25, 2010 in Frielas, Loures, the bigger store of Iberian Peninsula with 39,000 square metres (420,000 sq ft).
Turkey	2005	Istanbul	5	There are two stores are in İstanbul (Bayrampaşa and Ümraniye), one store in İzmir (Bornova) and one store in Bursa (Osmangazi). The fifth store in Ankara is scheduled to open during June 2011.
Romania	2007	Bucharest (Băneasa)	1	26,000 square metres (280,000 sq ft) store opened on March 21, 2007 in Baneasa "Feeria" Shopping Center. The second store will be opened in 2009, in Iaşi, in Era Shopping Park. Other stores are planned to be opened in Bucharest, Braşov, Cluj-Napoca, Constanţa, Galaţi and Timişoara by 2013.
Cyprus	2007	Nicosia (Strovolos)	1	22,000 square metres (240,000 sq ft) store opened in September 2007.
Ireland	July 2009	Dublin (Ballymun)	1	The first IKEA store in Republic of Ireland(and second on the island of Ireland) opened on July 27, 2009. The store was granted planning permission in 2007 with conditions, and although the store was completed in February 2009, planning conditions resulted in the delayed opening.
Dominican Republic	February 2010	Santo Domingo	1	The first Dominican IKEA store opened 17 February 2010 in Santo Domingo. It is the first IKEA store in Latin America. The owner of the IKEA franchisee for Dominican Republic, Anders Alm, is reported as saying that the new store has created 400 jobs.
Lithuania	2013	Vilnius	1	The first IKEA in Lithaunia will open in 2011 near Vilnius International Airport .
Bulgaria	September 20th, 2011	Sofia	1	The Swedish furniture giant IKEA is opening its first store in the Bulgarian capital Sofia on September 20th, 2011. IKEA eyes second Bulgarian store in Varna.
Thailand	2011	Bangkok	0	The first IKEA in Thailand opened its door on November 3, 2011 in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan. The store is adjacent to a major interchange where the Bang Na-Bang Pakong Highway and Kanchanaphisek Outer Ring Road intersects, with convenient access from the more affluent eastern suburbs of Bangkok. It is expected to have 40,000 sq meters of retail space as a part of the Mega Bangna Shopping Center
