Semiprotect for a short time

You indefinitely fully-protected List of countries by credit rating due to a 4chan raid, which almost always ends within an hour. Would you mind changing to semiprotection for a couple hours? Reaper Eternal (talk) 19:07, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, thanks for protecting. It was getting too crazy for me to keep up.
I don't know whether it was 4chan or not, but it seems protecting it while things cool down is a good idea. I would say semi-protect for a couple of days just to make sure we don't get anymore of this?
Cheers & thanks!
Λuα (Operibus anteire) 19:22, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No probs - apologies for being away from the PC for a little while and missing Reaper's message. Ian Cairns (talk) 22:10, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Note that the article was vandalized by IP accounts only, so: would you like to change the full protection into semi-protection? Legitimate users want to update it (see the article talk page), but they can't, due to the full protection. HOOTmag (talk) 12:44, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies - I think it's now correct. Sorry, Ian Cairns (talk) 22:52, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

S&P update

As seen its locked, May I ask if you could update Israel S&P ranking to A+ (A Plus) status in List of countries by credit rating.

Thank you.

License tagging for File:Stkatherineuponthehoe.JPG

Thanks for uploading File:Stkatherineuponthehoe.JPG. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. English!

Hi, can you help? Is there a template message that can be used when reverting text added in a language other than English or where the 'English' text is completely unintelligible? Denisarona (talk) 15:53, 2 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Denisarona. Please see Category:Non-English user warning templates where there is a selection available. Hope that helps. BRgrds, Ian Cairns (talk) 17:17, 2 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks, much appreciated. Denisarona (talk) 17:49, 2 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

IP user

This is just for my information, but I was wondering why you removed my report of vandalism from the IP 123.219.67.1. Your stated reason was that that it is "not active NOW", but given that the user committed two acts of vandalism today (October 16) after spending a month under a block, I was wondering what was going on. This is a user who persistently and consistently commits acts of vandalism, even after being repeatedly blocked. Should I just give the user a final warning and wait until they commit acts of vandalism again (as this user probably will)? Just asking. Michitaro (talk) 17:58, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Michitaro. As you will know there are several places where you can report vandals and vandalism. WP:AIV is for instant reaction to IP vandals who are vandalising in recent time (i.e. active NOW) or for persistent vandalism from named users. Your report of IP vandalism was around 15:40 or 14:40 depending on your time zone and referred to vandalism that last occurred around 04:40 this morning - so 10 hrs after the event. This is a little late for an IP vandal, who could easily have been disconnected or operating under another IP address after that time. As a result, you need to report such IP vandalism promptly, or choose another forum - e.g. WP:ANI - where they can take an opinion whether the IP vandal is on a fixed / static IP address or not. You will see that the Terms of Reference for WP:AIV do not allow us to handle this. Thanks, Ian Cairns (talk) 18:07, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarification. I just wonder about the definition of "now", since I might have been the first to notice the vandalism, and these are relatively obscure pages. The reason I noticed them is because this same IP user has been vandalizing the exact same pages for months using the same IP address (and possibly two others). I used WP:AIV before and that resulted in blocks for this user. He or she will be back for more. The address should definitely be blocked, the sooner the better. I will report it to WP:ANI. Michitaro (talk) 00:04, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Did I assume correctly?

[1] --Floquenbeam (talk) 21:20, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes indeed - looking at this, I cannot imagine what the context was.. I'll apologise on the page. Ian Cairns (talk) 21:25, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Probably no need, this is likely a misclick of the rollback button on your watchlist (happens to me a lot too). Cheers. --Floquenbeam (talk) 21:26, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No it was not vandalism to the article on Harrison. I was simply uncertain whether to leave what was written. It was a true, but defamatory, statement about Harrison. I am perfectly willing to restore what has been written. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ComtedeMonteCristo (talkcontribs) 18:12, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Following my last message, maybe you should inform Harrison himself what the content of this statement is about and let him respond. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ComtedeMonteCristo (talkcontribs) 18:22, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You wrote it. It was defamatory. That was vandalism. You removed it. The audit trail tells all. No admin let alone myself has any obligation to inform anyone about any your defamatory writing. WP:BLP gives anyone the right to remove unsourced comment like this. Please remember to sign all comments on talk pages using ~~~~. Fortunately Sinebot spotted your comment. I seem to have missed the discussion of this move.

I suppose you are going to update all the links to the redirection page? Or is there some bot that will do that? HughesJohn (talk) 14:19, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello HughesJohn - This seemed like a logical move to bring 1900 in line with the other series. Yes there are a few links to the redirect page, just like there are links to the ICL 1900 redirection page also. So work to do, but these will go in time. However, we currently have some consistency between the various series. Thanks, Ian Cairns (talk) 21:44, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Update: The long list of references to ICL 1900 has now been whittled down to none, along with all the other minor redirects - took 10 mins maximum. So, down to the last few redirects... Ian Cairns (talk) 22:30, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, logic is good :-)
(There isn't an automated procedure to fix links to redirect pages? Seems like there should be.) HughesJohn (talk) 08:28, 4 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion declined: PTC News

Hello Icairns, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of PTC News, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Not unambiguously promotional. You may wish to review the Criteria for Speedy Deletion before tagging further pages. Thank you. GFOLEY FOUR!23:15, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Gfoley - this wasn't my speedy, I was simply preventing deletion of the tags by re-adding them until you could review properly. Thanks again, Ian Cairns (talk) 11:38, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. The tool thought it was you. No worries. GFOLEY FOUR!19:24, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Granvilleelliott2.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Granvilleelliott2.jpg, which you've sourced to INSUFFICIENT OTRS OVER 1 MONTH OLD. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:06, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Golf club - wedges

I apologize I messed up the wedges section bu calling a wedge variation of a putter is simply incorrect — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.197.86.129 (talk) 19:36, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No problem - the edit did look like vandalism, hence I reverted. Please use the Edit Summary to inform other editors _why_ you are making your edit. Ian Cairns (talk) 20:29, 26 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I have edited in Wikipedia for a while independently. I am currently working as a contractor for University of Salford and sitting just down the room from User:Aadamsonsalford who works for the Digital Marketing Team of the University. :) I assumed it would be OK and not a COI to state that one is from Salford and add the correct logo - I see now that you've reverted your revert, or at least, helpfully redesigned it. But on a general note, is it not OK for her to edit the page provided that she says who she is and why she is making the edits? Given that others can over-ride them? I assumed that for example adding the correct logo to the infobox was helpful. Thanks for any info. James. Jamesinderbyshire (talk) 16:37, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello James. Thanks for your note. Yes there is no problem with editing provided that you abide by WP:COI. I have not warned Adam on this. However, it appeared that he was getting into difficulty with his editing, losing all the info on Chancellors, etc. As a result, I thought it easier to revert all his edits and re-apply the logo edit, since that seemed to be the major issue for him. Otherwise, I had no problem. Thanks, Ian Cairns (talk) 16:42, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for blocking that IP. I've put in a request to have my user page semi-protected, in case s/he goes round to his mate's house and starts again, or comes back after the block. Any chance you could expedite that? Thanks. PamD 13:36, 3 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Working on it, but the log said:

agree that that is what 'details' says but it doesn't appear in the history, even in deleted contributions, all that is in the history is (←Created page with 'Warren Mortimer'). Sorry, apart from the bot saying that the guy added that edit I can't find any evidence that he actually made it (if that makes sense :-)). TerriersFan (talk) 23:19, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The edit filter can prevent an edit from being saved, which is what happened in this case. Mr.Z-man 00:02, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
