Ahluwalia (Punjabi: ਅਹਲੂਵਾਲਿਆ (Gurmukhi), اہلوالیہ (Shahmukhi), अहलुवालिया (Devanagari)) is an adoptive name of the Kalal Caste[1][2][3][4][5][6][7], as Jassa Singh Ahluwalia was originally kalal[8][9][10][11][12][13][14] many from the community began using it as their surname thus starting the Ahluwalia caste. The Ahluwalia last name today has been adopted by Hindu's, but most are Punjabis of the kalal caste[15][16][17][18][19][20][21].
History and traditions
The term Ahluwalia came into use after the rise of a resident of the Ahlu village (located 11 miles S.E. of Lahore), Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, who was born into a kalal Jatt family.[22][23][24][25][26][27][28] A misldar (commander of the Misl) of the Sikh Empire of Punjab he was the first Ahluwalia. Hence his descendants and followers came to be known by Ahluwalia in urban areas. Later, descendants of other non-Sikh residents of the village also started using Ahluwalia, now a sizable community among Punjabis. They belong to Jatt/Kalal community. Originating from royal family of Jaisalmer,Ahluwalia is a sizable Jatt community,Kalal link was basically origanted when Jassa singh's grandfather married into kalal family,to increase empire strength and for unification of clans.Which basically takes this clan to a Rajput,Jatt & kalal combination.Basically ahluwalia are pure Jatt clan/race.[29][30][31][32][33][34][35].
