The group has had huge success, releasing twelve singles of which ten have reached the Top 10 on the UK Singles Chart. In addition, the group has had three Top 10 albums on the UK Album Charts, which have all gained a certification from the British Phonographic Industry. Sandford has previously been a member in band S Club 8 and released six singles and five of them charting in the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart. She also appeared in the children's television programme I Dream with them before they disbanded.
Sandford released a solo song with Calvin Goldspink, Dreaming, which was a hit. She later featured on Kids in Glass Houses song Undercover Lover. Sandford later went on The Dirt Tour with them. Glamour Magazine regularly publishes "Get Frankie's Look" showing how to get Sandford's style.
Sandford's personal life has been a staple of the tabloids especially her relationship with McFly's Dougie Poynter.[3] When the pair split up, she received death threats from his fans. She also began dating footballer Wayne Bridge in December 2010.[4] In 2011, Sandford walked away from the Glamour Woman of the Year Awards with three awards from four nominations. She won Inspiration[5] and Best Dressed[6] and she went on to win Band of the Year with The Saturdays. She has been heavily involved with charities including taking part in The Door. Sandford has had a number of sponsorship deals including Veet, Impulse and Nintendo 3DS game, Nintendogs + Cats.
Early life
Sandford was born in Upminster, London to Kevin and Viv Sandford, and has a sister, Victoria.[7] After school hours Sandford attended a private dance school. After leaving school Sandford went to a stage school in nearby Romford and studied musical arts. She also expressed an interest in going to the BRIT School.[8] Sandford previously worked in a bar in her local town during the week and had a Saturday job as a sales assistant clothing shop in AllSaints concession in House of Fraser, London.[9][10]
Career history
2001–2004: S Club 8
S Club Juniors were formed in 2001 through a reality television show, known as S Club Search.[11] The auditions were aired on CBBC. S Club Juniors' appearances was considered a success and consequently 19 Entertainment, the management company that had created S Club 7 and auditioned S Club Juniors, decided they should perform as a support act at all of the venues on the tour.[12] The band released their first single "One Step Closer" where it charted at number two in the UK, selling roughly 52,000 copies in its first week. "Automatic High" was released as the second single from the band's first studio album, where it also debuted at number two. Sandford was the only member of the band to get a solo in every chorus of the song. A third single was released from the album, "New Direction" where, again charted at number two in the UK.[13][13] The Juniors released their debut album Together on 21 October reaching number five in its first week of sale and selling 40,000 copies.[13] Fourth single, "Puppy Love/Sleigh Ride", was released on 9 December 2002.
In early 2003, the Juniors began working on their second studio album, Sundown The second single released, the album title track, also reached number 4 in the UK.[13] A third and final single was released, "Don't Tell Me You're Sorry", which charted at number 9.
The group split in early 2004, but they still went on to I Dream for 19 Entertainment. Unlike the S Club 7 shows which focused upon the band's fictional exploits, I Dream saw S Club 8 as members of a larger ensemble cast. I Dream revolved around the summer school Avalon Heights, run by Professor Toone (played by Christopher Lloyd), where the characters tried to improve on their talents in the performing arts. The show prominently featured songs and dances, with normally two songs per episode.
2007–present: The Saturdays
Since 2007 Sandford has been a member of the girl group The Saturdays. The band has enjoyed eight Top 10 hits, and three Top 10 album hits.[14][14][15] The girl group released their debut single "If This Is Love" in July 2008, and it peaked at number eight in the UK[16] The band released a second single "Up" which charted at number five in the UK[16] and later the song was given a Silver Disc in the United Kingdom.[17] In late October 2008, the group released their first studio album Chasing Lights. It charted at number nine in the UK, and went platinum according to the BPI.[17] The band released a third single from the album, Issues, which also went silver.[17] The Saturdays released a cover of Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode. The song debuted at number two in the UK, behind Flo Rida's "Right Round". The fifth and final single from the album was "Work", which was the first single by the band to fail to reach the top 20. The group later went on a tour titled The Work Tour.
In October 2009, the band released a second studio album, Wordshaker, which charted at number nine and was given a silver certification by the BPI.[17] The first single, "Forever Is Over", charted at number two in the UK. The Saturdays appeared in advertisements for several products including a brand of deodorant, tampons,[18] mobile phones, an operating system, and hair removal products.[19] But in early 2010, the band released a second and final single from their second debut album, "Ego", which charted at number nine.[16] Although the song became the second lowest single to chart by the band, it became one of their highest selling singles[specify], after getting a certification of silver by the BPI.[17]
In summer 2010, the band released their first mini album (their third album overall) Headlines!,[20] which charted at number 3 in the UK and number 10 in Ireland.[16] The band released their eighth single, "Missing You", which charted at number three in the UK and number six in Ireland.[21] Rochelle Wiseman confirmed that the second single from the album would be "Higher"[22][23] After Flo Rida beat the group to number one for the second time, the American rapper offered to do a collaboration with the band.[24] It was later confirmed, by the band's official website that Flo Rida had recorded vocals for "Higher".[25][26] On Your Radar was the band third studio album, with top-ten hits, "All Fired Up" and "Notorious" as well as single, "My Heart Takes Over". In December 2011, Sandford and the other The Saturdays members went on their first headlining arena tour, All Fired Up Tour.
Solo releases and appearances
In November 2008, along with her other bandmates from The Saturdays, Sandford appeared in the Channel 4 Hollyoaks spin-off Hollyoaks Later.[27][28] They performed the song Issues in the 10 minute BBC drama Myths in January 2009, in the episode 'A Syren's Call'.[27] In FHM's Sexiest Women poll Sandford was ranked 17 in 2009, fourth in 2010 and dropped to 22 in 2011.[29][30] Zoo magazine's readers declared Sandford to have the "best bum".[31] Sandford took part in TV series The Door. Sandford is a guest vocalist on Kids in Glass Houses's second album Dirt, appearing on the track "Undercover Lover".[32]
Other endeavours
Television appearances
On September 22, 2004 I Dream which is a children's musical television comedy programme aimed at and mostly about teenagers was broadcast. It was set at a performing arts college near Barcelona, Spain, and focuses on thirteen youths, with one of them being Sandford, who are invited to enroll at the college, Avalon Heights, over the summer. Christopher Lloyd was also in the setting.[33] The show was created by Simon Fuller who is responsible for the Idol series. In late 2008 Sandford appeared in late-night teen soap, Hollyoaks Later where she was credited as herself.[34] Sandford's band, The Saturdays were giving their own reality TV series, The Saturdays: 24/7 where it followed herself and her band to their day-to-day life styles on promoting their new album [at the time] Headlines!.[35] The programme was sponsored by watchmakers Sekonda.[36] The programme also featured exclusive performances of Sandford and her band performing.
Of rumours about tension in The Saturdays, she said, "You always see in the papers, that me and girls are always arguing, we really don't and there is no bitching at all."[37] In the first episode of The Saturdays: 24/7 the band were shown gigging around the UK, without King, after she was taken ill after being bitten by a horse-fly and Sandford had to learn new lines of their song "If This Is Love" after she stated she didn't know all the song's lines.[38]
She also took part in paranormal television programme titled Ghosthunting with..., where she appeared with Vanessa White, Mollie King, Rochelle Wiseman and Una Healy. On the programme the band investigated purported paranormal activity in three different known to be haunted locations in Wales. The show aired on 8 November 2010.[39] They were accompanied by host Yvette Fielding when she took them to visit three locations within the Welsh mountains: the clock tower, the manor and the kitchen block. In each of these areas there have been countless reports of strange phenomena including the sounds of chatter coming from empty rooms, cooking smells coming from an empty kitchen, and reported ghostly sightings.[40] During the time in the first location, Sandford said that she could smell someone cooking, although no one was in the kitchen.[40] She also experienced a ghost throwing marbles at her, when there was no one there. When the she was about to leave the haunted location the spirit of the little girl apparently threw marbles at them.[40]
She appeared in The Door. The point of the show was to pass through a series of doors and take on a number of tough challenges. The last star standing claims a cash prize for their chosen charity. Sandford was the first celebrity to be eliminated from the show after she could not put her hand in with spiders to get the key to the door to pass through to the next level. The show which was hosted by Amanda Holden and Chris Tarrant was eventually won by Keith Duffy. Sandford commented, "It's funny because I know when I watch it that I'll look like I hate every second of it but I absolutely loved it. I wanted it to keep going."[41]
Sandford was in talks to become a judge on The X Factor after Cheryl Cole left the panel but was adjudged not to have a "high enough profile" and declined to appear on rival BBC show The Voice because of her "busy schedule".[42]
Merchandise and sponsorship deals
Sandford contributed to the book The Saturdays: Our Story an autobiography with her The Saturdays bandmates, released on 25 October 2010. The book was written by a ghostwriter and published by the Transworld imprint Bantam Press.[43][44][45] Sandford and her band also began a book signing on at WH Smith in Bluewater.[45] The book gives an insight into the world of Sandford, where she explains her success with her band, The Saturdays and her ex-band S Club 8. She also talks about her love life, her friendships within the band and personal insight into her life before finding fame. She also gives fashion and beauty tips throughout the book and gossip accompanied by photos from her own collection.[46]
As a member of The Saturdays she became of new face of hair removal product, Veet. In the photoshoot to promote Veet's new collection, the band models a range of micro mini-skirts and body con dresses to show off their hair-free legs.[47] She and her band later became the new faces of major campaign of Impulse women's deodorant. The band recorded a television ad dubbed The Impulse Diaries. The TV content, which involves a sponsorship package on Channel 4, will show the girls in various settings including a hotel room, a tour bus and backstage before a gig. This first aired on 23 October.[48] She and her band became the face of Nintendo 3DS game, Nintendogs + Cats, which the band recorded a number of TV adverts to promote.[49]
Musical style
Sandford gained a record deal in 2002 with band S Club 8 and the band released pop song, "One Step Closer" which Sandford sings the solo parts in every chorus and backing vocals in the end of the song. All of the band's songs were pop-based music. After the band split up, Sandford remained signed to Polydor Records and uploaded a R&B song titled "Bored" onto MySpace.[50] She later uploaded another track titled "Swallow" which was a pop rock song.[51] She later became a member of The Saturdays and recorded a song titled "If This Is Love," featuring elements of Synthpop and New Wave.[52][53] Sandford's style has also been described by music critics as "obligatory fluffy summery pop," "pure uplifting pop," "an 80's throwback" and "an electro-soul number."[53] She later went on to release another solo song in 2010 with Kids in Glass Houses, "Undercover Lover" which was a Pop punk song, released from their 2010 album Dirt. The Sun reported that Sandford "flirts her way through the song" with her vocals.[54] She later released a new song with The Saturdays, "Missing You" and then "Higher" where the band have made use of auto-tuning on their vocals.[55] The production of "Higher" was described as "hectic"[56] yet very catchy."[57] Sandford was criticized by press after the release of "Missing You" after she used Auto-Tune on some of her vocals. Many artists have expressed views in collaborating with Sandford including Bruno Mars and Flo Rida who stated he would like to work with Sandford as a solo act.[58]
Personal life
Sandford began dating McFly bassist Dougie Poynter in October 2008.[59][60][61][62][63] However, the pair split for a brief period in March 2010 before reuniting the following month[64] but split up again in November of the same year. Poynter has stated that they will not be getting back together for the third time.[65][66][67][68] After the split, some of Poynter's fans sent Sandford death threats.[69] Sandford has been dating Manchester City footballer, Wayne Bridge since December 2010.[4][70] Sandford has been battling an unknown illness since early October 2011 and doctors ordered her to take time off from the band so that she would be well enough to perform during the All Fired Up Tour.[71] She confirmed in early December 2011 that she was starting to get well again. Sandford has a tattoo of a star on her wrist and another on her back under her neck which says "Sunshine 'n' Showers", inspired by her grandmother, who used to call her "Sunshine and showers".[72] Sandford revealed in late 2011 that she had sought treatment in a clinic for an undisclosed medical condition, but did say it wasn't related to alcohol, drugs or an eating disorder. In March 2012 Sandford revealed in an interview that she has been suffering from depression and panic attacks for several years and that it was the real reason for taking a break in the late 2011.[73]
