Hamdard was established on 9 October 1991 by a provisional act of the Sindh Assembly. The founding chancellor, Hakim Said, had been long advocating for the establishment of private-sector higher education learning institutions. He received the university's charter from President Ghulam Ishaq Khan in a solemn ceremony. The university is named after Said's philanthropy and education lobby organisation, the Hamdard Foundation.

For the university, an area of about 178 acres was earmarked at Madinat al-Hikmah: "a City of Education, Science and Culture", 30 km north of the commercial center of Karachi.[16]

Stretching over an area of 350 acres, Madinat al-Hikmah includes, in addition to the establishments of the university, Hamdard Garden, sports stadium, Hamdard Public School and college, operating as its earliest institutions, imparting education from primary to higher secondary level and Bait al-Hikmah library. Institute of Education & Social Sciences (H.I.E.S.S.) and College of Eastern Medicine (H.A.C.E.M.) were among the earliest institutions, established after its inception. The other institutions that appeared in the later stages of its development include Hamdard College of Medicine & Dentistry (H.C.M. & D.), Hamdard Institute of Management Sciences (H.I.M.S.), Hamdard Institute of Information Technology (H.I.I.T.), Faclty of Engineering Sciences and Technology (F.E.S.T.), Usman Institute of Technology (U.I.T.), Hafiz Mohammad Ilyas Institute of Pharmacology & Herbal Sciences, Hamdard School of Law (H.S.L.), Hamdard Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (H.I.P.S.), Bait al-Hikmah Institute of Research and Regional CISCO Networking Academy.[16]

In addition to this process of institutional multiplication, the growth of the university, in terms of the extension of its services to an increased public, has been regular. In 1996 the first city campus of the university was established at Adamjee Nagar. Later on, another city campus operating both weekend and evening programs was started in P.E.C.H.S., Karachi. The number of campuses increased with the establishment of Islamabad and Faisalabad campuses in 1998 and 2000 respectively. During the period, five Lahore-, Islamabad- and Karachi-based organisations, imparting professional education in different disciplines, also became affiliated with the university.[16]

Campuses

Hamdard University has 6 major campuses in 3 main cities of Pakistan: 3 in Karachi – the financial hub of Pakistan; 2 in Islamabad – the capital city of the country (one of the 2 Islamabad campuses is under construction); and 1 in Faisalabad.

Karachi campuses

Out of the three campuses in Karachi, the one located at Northern Bypass is the oldest and the largest. It is known as the Main Campus. The others are located in downtown Karachi and are known as the City Campuses.

Main campus

The main campus of Hamdard University is located in the vicinity of the Sindh-Balochistan border, 28 km from the commercial center of Karachi, on the main highway leading to Murad Khan Dam (Bund), situated against the backdrop of over 350 acres of Madinat al-Hikmah: the city of Education, Science and Culture.

The Main Campus houses different institutes and faculties which include Hamdard Institute of Information Technology, Hamdard Institute of Management Sciences, Faculty of Eastern Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Faculty of Environmental Sciences and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

City campuses

There are two major City Campuses of the university too, in addition to the Main Campus, in Karachi:

CC-I is basically an extension for the Hamdard Institute of Management Sciences (H.I.M.S.) and CC-II is the campus of Hamdard Institute of Information Technology (H.I.I.T.), and is also utilised for offering different training courses, certifications and diplomas. It also houses the Graduate School of Engineering Sciences and Information Technology and Hamdard School of Law. A summer semester, for the students who want to improve their grades or apply for the courses which they previously failed to complete/pass, is also offered at CC-II during the months of July–September, every year.

Islamabad campuses

The main Islamabad campus for the university was constructed in 2000. It is located at Plot No. 2, Johar Road, F-8 Markaz, Islamabad. The Islamabad Campus houses three institutes which offer different disciplines in Engineering, I.T., Management Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences. These institutes include Hamdard Institute of Information Technology, Hamdard Institute of Management Sciences and Hamdard Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Islamabad Campus offers different facilities for students and faculty-members which include an Auditorium, Wireless Internet Access, Hospital training for Pharm. D students, Student-teacher Centre and different laboratories.[18]

As of 2012, a second campus in the city of Islamabad is planned. Land for new campus building, at a site on Kurri Road near National Institute of Health, has been acquired and construction is planned in the near future.[19]

Faisalabad campus

The Faisalabad Campus of Hamdard University is situated at East Canal Road. Its facilities include a library, audio-visual systems for classrooms, an auditorium and seminar halls. It offers education in the fields of Management Sciences and Information Technology.[20]
