This page supplements the list of oldest people by nation, which itemizes the oldest people by country. This page lists the oldest people confirmed to be alive in the last year, by country.

Comprehensive birth registration is largely a 20th-century phenomenon, so records establishing human longevity are necessarily fragmentary. The earliest comprehensive recordkeeping systems arose in Europe which makes the continent the only place that the lifespans of people born in the 19th century can be documented and verified to the standards of modern scientific research. For example, the United Kingdom organized a central recordkeeping system for England and Wales in 1837, making it compulsory by 1874.[1]

Mathematically, very few people born in the 20th century have yet had an opportunity to reach or surpass the age of 110. This is the age recognized by longevity researchers as the marker of supercentenarian status. Some of the people listed below may be recognized by their own nation as having attained an age of 110 years or greater, but their lifespan may not yet have been documented and verified sufficiently for them to be denominated a supercentenarian by the standards of modern longevity research.

This list contains the oldest woman and/or man in a country under the following criteria:

  • The oldest supercentenarian verified by an independent organisation specializing in the study of gerontology (e.g. The Gerontology Research Group). Pending and unverified claims greater than the verified oldest are not included.
  • Where there is no verified supercentenarian then the oldest pending case, if any, being investigated by a group such as the GRG.
  • Other cases that have a reliable source that identifies the person as the oldest woman or man in their country.

Those born in one country but who later moved to another are specifically noted.
