Henry Hugglemonster is an Irish-British animated television series produced by Brown Bag Films. It is based on the best selling book I'm a Happy Hugglewug written and illustrated by Niamh Sharkey.[1] The series premiered on Disney Junior channels in the United Kingdom and Ireland on February 8, 2013 and in the United States on April 15.[2][3]

Premise

The series revolves around the daily life of a monster named Henry Hugglemonster and his slightly chaotic but loving family, living in the suburban town of Roarsville. He also had a monster friend named Denzel and a monsterette[4] friend named Gertie he spends time with. Everyone[citation needed] in Roarsville is a friendly, fun-loving monster. Henry's experiences with his family often lead to problems, so Henry must use his problem-solving skills to try and find a way to solve the problems and conflicts he is presented with in his daily life. Every episode features one or more original songs.

Common Sense Media stated that many of the episodes include "basic preschool skills like counting and sequences".[5]

Characters

The Hugglemonsters and Denzel were able to survive without visible protection on the Monster Moon which had no apparent atmosphere, suggesting that Monsters and Monsterettes can resist the vacuum of outer space and, if they have to breath, can hold their breath for extended periods of time.[6]

Hugglemonster family

  • Henry Hugglemonster (Lara Jill Miller in the US and Teresa Gallagher in the UK) - A 5-year-old[7][8] monster whose horns resemble those of a jester's cap. He never backs down from a problem, because he believes he and his family can "always find a way." His favorite sport is huggleball, a game similar to soccer except that it is legal to carry the ball into the goal and the ball sticks to the monsters' skin. He is energetic, able to do a one-hand hang with his left for 40 seconds.[9] He often says "Roarsome!" and his family motto "Hugglemonsters always find a way!". His middle name is Alfonzo.[citation needed]
  • Summer Hugglemonster (Hynden Walch) - Henry's older sister who is 6 years old.[10] She is pink and she wears red shoes,[11] or occasionally blue ones.[12] Her hobbies are putting on plays, singing, dancing and cheerleading.[13] She is flexible enough to do a left[14] front split. She is also called Summerling[15] but it is unclear if this is her full forename or a nickname. In the book, Henry's sister's name was Lola Hugglewug.[citation needed]
  • Cobby Hugglemonster (Chiara Zanni) - Henry's (and thus Ivor's) older brother.[16] Henry has nicknamed him Cobster.[17] At 7 years old this also makes him Summer's older brother.[10] He is an inventor and his inventions sometimes come in handy in solving problems.
  • Daddo Hugglemonster (Tom Kenny) - Henry's father is a mailman who can be a bit forgetful at times. His talent is a form of juggling called huggle-juggling, which he often does when making the family's famous dinner. He is a scoutmaster assisted by Eduardo.
  • Grando Hugglemonster (Tom Kenny) - Henry's grandfather. He appears to be Daddo's father.[18]
  • Swifty Hugglemonster - Grando's grandfather, Daddo's great-grandfather, the great-great-grandfather of Cobby/Summer/Henry/Ivor, and former mayor of Roarsville, depicted on an old coin.[19]
  • Momma Hugglemonster (Lori Alan) - Henry's mother, and also a talented musician who plays every instrument.
  • Ivor Hugglemonster (Kari Wahlgren) - Henry, Cobby, and Summer's baby brother. He cannot talk yet, nor fly.
  • Nan-Oh Hugglemonster (Grey DeLisle) - the mother of Daddo[20] and paternal grandmother of Cobby/Summer/Henry/Ivor.
  • Beckett Hugglemonster[21](voiced by a dog) - The Hugglemonster family's pet monster dog. He is a boy.[22]
  • Harry Hugglemonster - Henry's cousin who is four armed. It is not clear which of his parents is a sibling of one of Henry's. The character appears on "Huggsgiving Day".
  • Dexter Hugglemonster - Henry's uncle and Harry's father.
  • Dee Hugglemonster - Henry's aunt and Harry's mother.

Dugglemonster family

  • Denzel Dugglemonster (Cree Summer) - Henry's best friend[23] (and Henry is his best friend too[24]) who has a passion for digging underground tunnels. His catchphrase is "Grr-ocious!".
  • Herold[citation needed] Dugglemonster (Rob Paulsen) - Denzel's father who works as a baker.
  • Maude Dugglemonster - Denzel's mother.
  • Grammo Dugglemonster (Cree Summer) - Denzel's grandmonster.
  • Gurgler Dugglemonster - the Dugglemonster's pet monster dog.

Growlerstein family

  • Gertie Growlerstein (Grey DeLisle) - Henry's friend, who is a math genius.[citation needed] She wears a watch on her left wrist and claims to never make mistakes.[25] She is able to do a one-armed straddle planche on her right hand.[26]
  • Milo Growlerstein (Hynden Walch) - Gertie's little brother that likes to play with his toys. He is also Henry's friend.
  • Gregor[27] Growlerstein - Gertie and Milo's father that had a few jobs that he worked in, including comic book vendor.[28]
  • Joyce[citation needed] Growlerstein - Gertie and Milo's mother.[29] Only seen a couple times in the show.
