The question regards to editing a biography of a deceased individual. Is it reasonable or within editing guidelines to include speculative commentary of the individual having been involved in criminal activity? In this example the individual was cleared of wrongdoing by legal process which is stated within the article. However the editing query continues to appear of source material being used to reference possible wrongdoing based upon conjecture or inference, despite the legal process being closed as previously stated. Is it correct to say the deceased has no protection from libel? But then what is the policy regarding speculative comments especially when the matter was already dealt with by legal process. can't log in

Hi, I used to do a lot of editing about ten years ago. Recently I tried to log in again but i could not remember my password. What do I do? Cheers, L — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:8003:34F0:C300:21C:B3FF:FEC6:12F7 (talk) 02:19, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Did you provide an email address for the account? If you did, you should be able to request at the log in page, that a new password is sent to that email address. If you didn't provide an email address, bad luck; you won't be able to gain access to your account. However, you can create another account, and using that account, edit your old account's userpage to mention that you no longer use it. Before creating the new account, please read up on Wikipedia's username policy, to make sure your account complies. Hope this has helped.Template:Z29 Anon126 (notify me of responses! / talk / contribs) 03:15, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Rarely viewed pages

Is there some way to find articles that have not been viewed since their creation or have been very rarely viewed (either at all or within the recent past)?Kdammers (talk) 03:38, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Overriding template treatment of infobox perameters

Without going into unneccessary detail, is there an easy way to override how a template treats the entry for a given parameter within an infobox? Slightly more specific, a given template does a great job of returning certain information for hundreds (if not thousands) of a particular parameter within an infobox. However, among the huge number of instances of this particular parameter, there are two articles being created that require a different treatment. Since there is no reason to believe that there will ever be more than these two exceptions, it would seem easier to somehow override the standard results for the two articles, rather than alter the applicable template used by the infobox. Even more specific, the template takes the number given for the specific parameter and returns a hyperlink to an external webpage (based on the parameter entry). In these two "exceptional" cases, the hyperlink needs to be slightly different than the "standard". An Errant Knight (talk) 04:35, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    • If you are comfortable with templates, you can simply copy the template source code and create a new template for your needs. The only real difficulty with this occurs when your new template becomes so wildly successful that it is used in a large number of articles and an administrator comes along and protects it. -Arch dude (talk) 04:42, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
      • Thanks for the response, but the hope was to find out if there is anyway to get the desired results without creating a new template or altering the existing template (since it would never need to be used more than twice). An Errant Knight (talk) 04:47, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
        • There is no good way to alter it in the articles without editing a template. Wrapping the whole infobox call in {{Replace}} to replace the url gives an unstable problematic way but I certainly recommend a template edit instead. Which template and links is it about? It would probably only require a line of code with a switch. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:54, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
          • As you indicated, your suggestion didn't work in an acceptable manner. Notwithstanding, thank you for the suggestion and for confirming that a fairly easy fix for the issue was not being overlooked. Since the template in question is protected, a request for an edit has been made. An Errant Knight (talk) 05:44, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Languages section

What happened to the Languages section on the left side of the page? Why is it collapsed? Until yesterday it wasn't. English Wikipedia used to be the only language version of the project that showed all the interwikis in alphabetical order. Often it was the only way for me to find necessary language in the list. What has happened? Where is the explanation? — 94.25.229.204 (talk) 09:15, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Click "more" below the languages to see all languages grouped by region. You can also click "Edit links" to go to Wikidata page where all languages are listed alphabetically by language code but does not show the language name. Registered users can get the old alphabetical list by disabling "Use a compact language list, with languages relevant to you" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:43, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I have already seen "languages grouped by region". Disabling isn't available for all users, is it? Why? Why the interface has became more confusing? When has it happened? And where could I read any notice, any explanation of the "innovation"? — 94.25.229.204 (talk) 11:34, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The change was announced in Technical News 2017-23 last June, so not very recent. The rationale is that topics of widespread interest may have articles on Wikipedias in over 200 languages, making the list too long for convenience. The weekly Technical News is useful to monitor, often giving a warning that WMF are about to improve something: Noyster (talk), 14:25, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Sisskaputriii: You can place {{request edit}} on the article talk page, with details of the changes you wish to see made. Provide sources where appropriate. See Template:Request edit for full instructions. Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Eagleash (talk) 12:07, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
{{Edit semi-protected}} is the template you're looking for. Request edit is for cases where the user has a conflict of interest. See Template:Edit semi-protected for further details. IffyChat -- 13:01, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

what is this error and how can I fix it? Hussainkgl (talk) 14:36, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What article does the error appear in? Jc3s5h (talk) 14:43, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Hussainkgl: Relates to Draft:Nasir Hussain Munshi. I have cleaned up the draft a bit (some layout and style errors) and added the template. However, it gives a URL error message which I was not able to fix. Presumably you know where you found the information and can suppy the correct URL. Deleted article?

An article I monitor has suddenly been disappeared, despite having existed for more than 7 years. Can you look into it? It is a biographical article titled Wayne Caparas, who is an author, journalist, business-innovator, and film professional. KaySorin (talk) 21:17, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) @KaySorin: Wayne Caparas was deleted at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Wayne Caparas. The discussion was open for a week with no opposition. The top of the article had a big box with a link to the discussion. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:27, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I never received notification of this discussion. What must be done to restore it? This is an author page with many verifiable sources available for the book BioLogic Revelation, and his biography is available in several places online including IMDB and the book's website. This deletion must have been requested by someone criticized in the book, yes? Can you or someone else in the network establish a new page if the previous one cannot be restored? KaySorin (talk) 21:37, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, self-published material such as IMDB and the book's website are not considered to be independent WP:Reliable sources. Can you find any independent reviews that have biographical content? Dbfirs 21:49, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed... I just Googled to find these as starters. First, the book's publisher (Westbow Press) website has verified third-party endorsements that should probably be included in the article, and of course there is also an "About the Author" tab to see biographical information on the author, and also a tab for an overview of the book. That site is https://www.westbowpress.com/Bookstore/BookDetail.aspx?BookId=SKU-001127293. Also, I found several articles at highly reputable news sites that cite the author and the book, including Reader's Digest and Livestrong. For those two see: https://www.rd.com/health/diet-weight-loss/walking-workout/ and http://www.biologicrevelation.com/biologic-revelation-blog/livestrong-the-7-most-dreaded-exercises-and-why-you-should-do-them/. Finally, there is a lengthy third-party interview where Caparas discusses the book with fitness journalist Nadia Murdock. You can see this at http://www.nadiamurdockfit.com/blog/fitness-files-wayne-caparas.KaySorin (talk) 22:14, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

With the recent deletion discussion, simply restoring it as an article would not be appropriate, but I can do for you is to move it to restore it as WP:DRAFT where it can be improved to address the issues identified in the deletion discussion before being re-submitted to article space. Beeblebrox (talk) 22:18, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think that would be very appropriate. I don't have time to build out a new page, so I hope someone else with great Wiki experience can rebuild it with great ease, but please let me know what I can do to help get the article reestablished in some form. I also found this very recent article that cites the author's role in creating Oxygen Magazine and Obstacle Course Fitness sports for ESPN, which I found especially relevant to the author's biography. See it here: https://discgolf.ultiworld.com/2018/01/18/schusterick-taps-entrepreneurial-spirit-instructional-platform/. Thank you for your assistance! KaySorin (talk) 22:28, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, KaySorin. I'm sorry, but I think you're still not understanding. Wikipedia is basically not interested in anything said by the subject of an article, or their friends, relatives, business associates, agents, employers, employees, publishers etc. A little uncontroversial factual information can be added from those sources, provided the article can be based on enough material that people who are entirely unconnected with the subject have chosen to write about them, and had published in reliable sources: that is really what the requirement of notability is about. So anything published by Westbow Press does not contribute to notability (whoever wrote it). Nor does an interview with Caparas, whoever published it. Both the Readers Digest and the Livestrong article just quote Caparas. And the Ultiworld article is clearly based on an interview or press release, because it also quotes Caparas. Again, where have people who have no connection with Caparas and his activities chosen to write at length about him? Unless you can find some of them, he does not currently meet the criteria for notability, and no article on him will be acceptable, however it is written. Sorry --ColinFine (talk) 21:33, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Requested Pictures

I've been looking at the list of requested photographs for Scotland, as I do quite a bit of wandering around with a camera, both hill and long distance walking and tracking down things to do with the Age of Sail.

However, I'm finding that quite a lot of the articles listed already have a picture, for example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Creamery_Park https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Charlestown,_Fife

If I find examples like this, can I remove the 'photo required' tag? By which I mean both a) is it safe to assume that a picture is no longer needed (and that there's not a problem with the one there), and b) is it physically possible for me to delete things that come in a fancy official box?

    Ingreatwaters (talk) 22:24, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    • Welcome, and thanks. You have just as much authority to make these decisions and take these actions as any other editor (Well almost. See WP:AUTOCONFIRM.) If you feel sure the existing picture is adequate, you are free to remove the tag. If you wish to add an additional picture and you feel it will add to the article, feel free to do that, too. Note that we operate by consensus, so if you think there may be doubt, you may choose to discuss you proposed action on the article's talk page, but even there you are free to be bold (WP:BOLD), and make your change or addition and wait for any dissenter to revert your change before initiating a discussion. -Arch dude (talk) 01:38, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • If you add pictures, you should be adding them at Commons and not here at the English Wikipedia. That way, all the Wikipedias and use the pictures. adding picture is a bit tedious, because we try hard to ensure that we comply with copyright law. If you have difficulty with the process, please come back and ask for further help.-Arch dude (talk) 01:41, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect info that is now showing up on Google search - please help! :(

    Dear Wikipedia Help Desk,

This page is about me, Grace Randolph:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Randolph

In March 2016 someone maliciously - I believe it to be someone who was harassing me online at the time - posted incorrect information about my birthdate, saying it was "April 1st 1973". The information could not be verified - again, because it's incorrect - and was deleted:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Grace_Randolph&oldid=710418988

However, it has now come to my attention that the old, incorrect information is coming up in "Siri Knowledge" on cell phones when you begin to type in my name, citing Wikipedia as the source.

Is there a way to permanently delete this old page/revision so that Siri does not access it?

I've tried to do it myself but cannot.... If you need further information from me, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks so much, Grace Randolph — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bonnar212 (talkcontribs) 07:45, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

An administrator can remove visibility from some or all revisions of a page however I don't believe that would help you in this case. "Siri Knowledge" will have accessed the then-current version of the page at some point in the past to obtain the text and removing it from the Wikipedia history wont make any difference to what it does subsequently. It will likely update itself from time to time by re-accessing the now corrected page and at that point your problem will go away, or you may be able to request that it does that sooner by requesting it of them. But I don't think there is anything further that can be done at the Wikipedia end. Dorsetonian (talk) 15:02, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Incorrect page layout

Hi, I was looking at the page Rabindranath Tagore and noticed an error in the layout of the page. In the lead section, underneath the infobox is a map rendered using the template {{Location map+}}. The map comes with an option to display the locations using different zoom levels, which is usually underneath the map. However, on this page the options are incorrectly placed on top of the page underneath the hatnote and above the lead paragraph. I've tried a few different things but was unable to fix the error, so I was hoping someone else could. Thank you in advance! Shuipzv3 (talk) 12:54, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The example at Template:Location map#User selection of multiple maps does the same so it's apparently a template/module issue and not something in the article. I will post to Module talk:Location map. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:15, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The article used Template:Location map+ which is meant to be show multiple locations on an individual location map. I've fixed the article. MB 14:34, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Tabs upper left on articles

I changed computers (and operating systems) two weeks ago and noticed a few days ago that tabs that used to appear at the upper left of the screen are missing: Can't remember the labels for all the tabs but one (I think) was Edit, included in which was the option "Find on this page." I can no longer find these tabs which I used a lot, particularly the "Find on this page" feature. Are these restorable by the user? Is this omission a change initiated by Wikipedia or some "feature" of my new computer/software? First thing I would check is make sure you are not somehow on the mobile version. You shouldn’t be but it happens sometimes. If you are, scroll to the bottom of the page and find the link that says “desktop”.
If that isn’t it, you may want to look in your preferences, which alow all sorts of adjustments of the apearence of Wikipedia.
If that stil doesn’t do it I would reccomend asking again at WP:VPT. Beeblebrox (talk) 19:58, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Joan Lewis: It sounds like general browser features and not Wikipedia features. Did they only disppear in Wikipedia? Ctrl+f is Find in most Windows browsers. In some browsers Alt will temporarily display a horizontal menu which is hidden by default. There may also be an icon at the top right to display a vertical menu which includes Find. Draft: Murat Karahan

Good morning Sir or Madame, Is possible to review my draft for the Murat Karahan page as soon as possible?

Respectfully, User: Christmastreelig — Preceding unsigned comment added by Christmastreelig (talkcontribs) 15:48, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As it says in the box at the top of your draft, there are 2570 pending submissions waiting for review. The wait might be up to two months. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:52, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Christmastreelig: I have made some small adjustments to refs and other formatting. Some parts may require a minor rewrite to avoid peacock terms such as 'World renowned' which did not have source to back it up and therefore sounds as if it is 'opinion' or 'point of view'. Wikipedia articles have to appear neutral. There are also insufficient references (there seems to be just one in a lengthy 'early life' section) and more to reliable sources would be beneficial. There is nothing to stop you improving the page whilst awaiting review, but as David says there is quite a backlog. Eagleash (talk) 16:17, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's the edit history of the page. Thanks for doubling back, Roxy. Bonnar212 (talk) 18:35, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I believe what you are asking for is revision deletion, but it's quite clear from that linked page that there is no way it would be done just to remove a disputed date of birth. But I'm sure it doesn't matter - deleting old versions of the page really isn't going help one bit with what third-party sites serve up - when and if those sites come back to Wikipedia to re-get or update their information they will access the current version. However, by asking for this twice here (and twice more at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard) you are drawing attention to something you clearly want to suppress - be aware of the Streisand effect. Lady250, I have changed your draft of Draft:Leisa Goddard back to being in the queue for a review. When a review occurs, you will get a message on your talk page, just as you will get a Welcome from me in a couple of minutes. You can read about the processes involved with draft articles at WP:DRAFTS. Your article is going through the a process which can take several months, but you can short-cut it by requesting your page be moved, as described in this section of the WP:DRAFTS page. This is only appropriate if you are sure that it meets the requirements for being visible and in article space. Cheers, EdChem (talk) 04:41, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Being discussed at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Turn off extended edit summaries. You can read all the details there... in great and extended detail... though you can probably guess quite a bit from the title of the thread. EdChem (talk) 04:23, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

" this link is based on new report and it present the writer view which is very absorb politic view and does not add any value to the page , it is for sure damage the name and character for the MR Bahsar Jaafari — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2000:E145:DC00:D89D:2510:63FA:A7E7 (talk) 15:51, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Uh, why don't you just click the edit button and do it? {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 15:52, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
On the other hand, maybe you shouldn't just edit it, IP user, but should discuss the question on the talk page Talk:Bashar Jaafari. I have two reasons for suggesting this: one is that Jaafari represents a government over which there is currently a great deal of controversy. The other is that you say "We need to" - who is "we"? Who do you represent?
I know nothing about Jaafari, and I can't read Arabic, so I have no idea what that book says. But my suspicion (which may be wrong) is that the book is critical of him, and you do not want it to appear. Editing an article to make it conform to one or other view of a controversial subject is regarded as disruptive: it is a fundamental principle of Wikipedia that articles should neutrally represent all reliably-published views of a subject. If my suspicions are in any way close to the mark, you need to be very cautious, and discuss the matter before editing. In fact, I strongly urge you to look at Talk:Syrian Civil War, and in particular the section in the heading that says "All pages related to the Syrian Civil War and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant are currently subject to active community sanctions. This article falls within the scope of these sanctions." I don't know whether the article on Jaafari should also fall within those sanctions or not, but I think it possible. --ColinFine (talk) 17:01, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Customized Infoboxes

I have a few questions about infoboxes on specific pages, not infobox templates.

    1. How do you rearrange the order of the fields that are displayed on the actual page?

    2. How do you change the name of fields?

    3. How do you add a new field not to the template but only to that page?

    4. How do you add an image to an infobox?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tylermachanic (talkcontribs) 18:58, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

hello, Tylermachanic. Are you saying that there are infoboxes whose code is directly in an article, rather than in a template? Can you give an example? --ColinFine (talk) 19:57, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Tylermachanic: It's unclear what you want but I guess you are not satisfied with an existing infobox template and want an article to change what it does while still using the template. That is not possible. The allowed fields, their names and order are coded into the source of the infobox template. You can make suggestions on the talk page of the infobox. Most infoboxes have documentation for how to add an image. Look at the infobox page, e.g. Template:Infobox sports team. Images must be uploaded before they can be displayed anywhere. It's technically possible to make your own infobox directly in an article, e.g. by using the general Template:Infobox, but this is difficult, not recommended, and makes it hard to edit the infobox. For a new user who has to ask these questions, I strongly advice against it. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:28, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Tylermachanic: As an additional comment, the code in infobox templates is somewhat more complex than writing most parts of articles. I had been on Wikipedia for over two years before I started editing template code.Naraht (talk) 16:09, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Beta to live Wikipedia.org. How do I transfer?

What is the process to accomplish going from Wikipedia Beta transferring the page contents into the Wikipedia.org live page — Preceding unsigned comment added by King of C Town 2016 (talkcontribs) 20:16, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If I understand it correctly Wikipedia Beta is an app for a mobile phone as one method of allowing users to view and edit Wikipedia. It presumably works on the live Wikipedia database, so pages you edit through that app can be seen by any Wikipedia user. If the page you are talking about is your user page, the contents are not acceptable as a user page so you need to read the guidance WP:user pages. If you intended it as an article it is not suitable for that either, as you have no references to published reliable sources independent of the subject to demonstrate notability. Please read the advice at WP:Your first article. --David Biddulph (talk) 21:17, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Infobox for multi-sport athlete

I am currently drafting an article in my sandbox about a rugby union player named Psalm Wooching. He is a multi-sport athlete, having played both college football and professional rugby. Is there a good way to merge the {{Infobox Rugby biography}} and {{Infobox college football player}} into one infobox? Or, would my best strategy be to just use the rugby infobox and incorporate the information that I would have put into the college football infobox into the text of the article? ebbillings (talk) 22:25, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like so far you are using two separate infoboxes. The two separate infoboxes are fine. — MRD2014 Talk 02:22, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ref number 3 on this page is wrong. Please fix up if able - thank you 139.216.210.155 (talk) 22:35, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The error message includes the word "help" in blue, indicating that it is a wikilink, in this case to Help:CS1 errors#bad isbn. If there is something in there that you don't understand, please tell us what your problem is. Also, are you sure that |accessdate=6 March 2016 is correct? --David Biddulph (talk) 22:48, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed The problem was that both isbn Nos (10 digit & 13 digit) had been copied into the ref. As this editor rarely, if ever, follows any advice given here (assuming they even come back here at all) I have fixed it. Eagleash (talk) 04:57, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There is an article's section needs updating

With the recent news about gay rights in Indonesia becoming difficult with the law lately, how are transgendered people still able to change gender? Because in wikiedpia's article LGBT rights in Indonesia says people can change gender with judicial approval. But has this changed since the news is happening? Should wikipedia update that section? 2001:569:7671:F100:48E0:D026:F57C:49B6 (talk) 00:22, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Translating titles?

Vietnamese awards are mostly referred to as their translated names in English-language news websites. However, these translated names are not official. I googled the English names, and there are not much information about the awards.

When should a title of a film/song/award be changed to English? Is there any Wikipedia page that talks about this? Please help! Beyoncetan 2 (talk) 11:43, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Beyoncetan 2. Per guidance at Wikipedia:Article titles#English-language titles, titles on the English Wikipedia should usually be whatever name is used by English language sources, which in your case would be the unofficial translated names. However, if there is also a closely associated name (or names) in a non-English language, such that a native speaker of the other language is likely to search for it, it would be appropriate to create a redirect from the non-English title to the English one. Inquiry

    Hello

I'm just registered, and want to say thank you to Wikipedia for the opportunity to be a user. As for my actual issue, I wanted to create a new page. The page is to do with a method of examination, and is a personal method devised by myself. The point of the page is just the issues to do with the method of examination in question, and I wanted to inquire as to whether I can create such a page

Regards, Thomas — Preceding unsigned comment added by Trokanmariel (talkcontribs) 14:15, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome. Is this a method which has non-trivial coverage in independent (of you) reliable sources? If not then the answer to your question is "no" - see this for an explanation. If it is then there would likely be no problem with there being an article, but you would be strongly discouraged from being the one to create it - see this for an explanation. You would be advised to either write about it in other outlets or, and I'd encourage this, contribute to articles on other subjects. I have left a "welcome" on your talk page giving more info. Biography

This is a general question and not seeking resolution of any particular article editing. 2001:BB6:9D7:4858:D75:910A:986B:AB98 (talk) 16:31, 6 March 2018 (UTC).2001:BB6:9D7:4858:D75:910A:986B:AB98 (talk) 16:31, 6 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
